The eight tours selected, six strictly private and two semi-private, cost €138.51 to €725.02 per adult, for two travellers. All are rated at least 4.90 out of 5, with more than 100 reviews; seven of the eight show free cancellation. For a small budget, take the semi-private surf lesson in Lahaina; for Hana, plan a full day.
Checked on against the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).
In Maui, a private tour does not cost the same depending on the format: for two adults, the total runs from €277 for a surf lesson to €1,450 for a luxury Road to Hana trip. This guide answers a simple question: which private tours should you book in Maui, and how much do they cost per person? The first card is the VIP private Road to Hana tour, the listing with the most reviews (1,231), rated 4.97 out of 5.
The word « private » is applied strictly, with two exceptions that we flag. Of the 94 products in the top tier, 19 carry a private mention: eight were selected, six of them strictly private. The other two are semi-private surf lessons, which we keep for their strong ratings (4.92 and 5.00 out of 5) and label as such. The lesson in card 8 takes up to six people. The lesson in card 6 is classed as semi-private because its listing address includes the words « Semi-Private »; confirm the number of participants before you book. So you will not always be alone with your instructor.
Three of these products cover the Road to Hana, at three price levels and with three different paces. The rest of this article helps you choose based on your profile, your budget and the days you have.
Prices come from the Viator check of 22 October 2026, for the period 23 October 2026 to 21 January 2027. All amounts are for two adults: for a different group size, the price per person may change. The check gives one observed value per product, to be reconfirmed when you book. Of the 295 Maui products checked, 94 reach the top tier (rating of 4.7 or more, 100 reviews or more), 19 of those 94 carry a private mention, and 8 were selected. Each card gives the duration, the rating, the days open in the window, the cancellation indicators and the meeting point, then a field tip that the listing does not give.
Why Maui suits private tours

Maui is the second-largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, and together with its neighbouring islands it forms Maui County, in the US state of Hawaii. Its coasts are not alike. The west holds Lahaina and the surf breaks of the leeward coast. The south, with Makena and Turtle Town, is the domain of stand up paddle and sea turtles. The centre-east is taken up by Haleakalā National Park, which is not part of this selection. And the Road to Hana, which runs along the east coast, links the two.
The road is measured in bends, single-lane bridges and stops at waterfalls. Public sources describe it as a slow drive that the driver handles while passengers take in the scenery. This is where a private tour makes the biggest difference: you choose the stops, you do not follow a group programme, and the guide does the driving. The downside is price and time. A full day on this road takes eight to twelve hours, according to the listing.
These restrictions have also changed the picture. Since 8 February 2026, the authorities have limited the Road to Hana to local traffic after fallen trees and landslides. In March 2026, a Kona storm disrupted traffic again. On 22 March, traffic heading east on the island was still reserved for emergency vehicles, essential workers and local traffic, with checks from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. This information dates from 2026 and does not necessarily reflect the situation on the day. Check the county advisories before you book, and ask your operator in writing how it handles this access: Viator availability says nothing about the road.
Why three Road to Hana tours in a list of eight? Because three products in the check cover this route, and because the three tours do not follow the same logic. The VIP tour focuses on pick-up and comfort. The luxury version, the longest and most expensive, adds parking, fuel and a nine-to-twelve-hour duration. The jeep, more modest, adds the hike to the waterfall and the bamboo forest. We keep all three for that reason.
Finally, the season. Tourism sources, which are not official, place humpback whale season between mid-December and April, with a peak from January to March. The window of this selection, 23 October 2026 to 21 January 2027, therefore covers the start of the season. None of the eight tours focuses on whales: if that is your priority, look for other products.

The 8 best private and semi-private tours in Maui

1. VIP private Road to Hana tour, with pick-up
This is the listing with the most reviews in the group: 1,231 travellers rated it 4.97 out of 5. Pick-up is included, so you do not drive the Road to Hana yourself. The vehicle is air-conditioned, the transport is private, and the guide takes the wheel while you watch the bends go by. Departure is from the Island Fresh Café in Paia, with snacks and bottled water on board. What sets it apart is the pace: you choose your stops during the day, instead of following a group programme. It suits anyone who wants a day without the wheel, a couple seeing the island for the first time, or anyone who prefers to leave the road to a driver. The catch: the listing only details snacks and water. Budget for the rest of your meals and for tips, or the bill climbs fast by the end of the day.
- Pick-up included, no driving on the Road to Hana
- Air-conditioned vehicle, snacks and water on board
- Meals and tips not included: budget for them
- Best time: open 91 days out of 91, no date to avoid

2. Luxury Road to Hana, private format
This is the longest and most expensive format on the list, and the one that promises the most comfort. For €725.02 per adult, the listing describes a private Road to Hana with water and soda on board, and parking and fuel included. The stated duration is 9 to 12 hours: a full day, with time to really stop. Pick-up is at your hotel, with no structured meeting point in the listing. Tips are excluded from the listing, and their amount comes on top of the total. The « Hana Lava Tubes » option is listed separately and is not part of this price. This tour suits travellers who want a day with nothing to organise and who accept paying for that comfort. It stays open 79 days out of 91 in the window: 12 days are closed, so check your dates before choosing your week.
- Parking and fuel included, per the listing
- Water and soda on board, pick-up at your hotel
- A full day of 9 to 12 hours
- Best time: avoid 25 to 30 December and 1 January, closed days

3. Waterfall hike in a private jeep, Road to Hana
This tour takes the Road to Hana from a different angle. The private jeep stops for the hike: a waterfall and a bamboo forest on the itinerary, rather than just a view from the car. At €316.30 per adult, it is the least expensive of the three Road to Hana tours, for eight hours spent on the road and on the trails. It suits anyone who wants to walk, touch the vegetation and stop wherever the terrain allows, without paying for the luxury version. Two points to keep in mind. First, the listing does not show free cancellation: read the policy before you pay. Second, the tour is open only 63 days out of 91, which means 28 closed days in the window. Bring closed shoes and water for the walk.
- Private jeep and guide included
- Hiking stops: waterfall and bamboo forest
- Free cancellation not shown on the listing
- Best time: avoid 23 to 26 October, 28 days closed

4. Private flight over Maui, for 2 to 5 people
This is the only excursion on the list that takes place in the air. The private flight, for two to five people, passes over the island’s waterfalls and lava flows in 80 minutes. The meeting point is the Maui Plane Rides office at Kahului Airport, and the listing mentions skip-the-line access. With 245 reviews and a rating of 5.00, the listing is one of the strongest in the selection. This format suits anyone who wants to see Maui from above without spending their days on the road. Read the price per person: as a couple, each of you pays €409.65 for 80 minutes. Before booking, check with the operator the boarding conditions that apply to your group. Cancellation is free according to the listing, and the flight is available 76 days out of 91.
- Private flight for 2 to 5 people
- Skip-the-line access indicated on the listing
- Free cancellation according to the listing
- Best time: avoid 5 to 11 November and 22 to 29 December

5. Private stand up paddle in Turtle Town
Stand up paddle is the most accessible outing on the list for anyone who can swim. At Turtle Town, on the south coast, a guide goes with you for two hours, with board and equipment provided. This is where the turtle rule matters: NOAA and the DLNR, relayed by the Maui Ocean Center, recommend staying at least three metres from the animal, in the water as well as on the beach. The listing asks you to park inside the yellow gates of Makena Landing Park, the meeting point. It is the right format for a calm activity, in a small group, at a reasonable price: €153.17 per adult for two. The product is open on all 91 days of the check, like the VIP Hana tour. On sun protection, the advice further down suggests a mineral sunscreen for water activities.
- Guide, board and equipment
- Turtles: 3 metres minimum recommended
- Makena Landing Park, park inside the yellow gates
- Best time: open 91 days out of 91, no date to avoid

6. Two-hour semi-private surf lesson in Lahaina
This is the least expensive surf option on the list. Two hours with an instructor, equipment provided, on the west coast at The Guardrails, on Honoapiʻilani Highway, at milepost 19. We class it as semi-private, because its listing address includes the words « Semi-Private », while its title suggests a private lesson: confirm the number of participants before booking. This format suits a couple or two friends who want to learn together. If you are unsure of your comfort in the water, ask the operator what level is required before you book. At €138.51 per adult, it is also the cheapest of the eight tours on the list. It is open 90 days out of 91 in the window, which leaves room to pick the date that fits your itinerary.
- Instructor and surf equipment provided
- Semi-private format: number of participants to confirm
- Meeting point at The Guardrails, milepost 19
- Best time: closed only on 1 January

7. Private mermaid swimming lesson
This is the most playful outing on the list: 90 minutes of one-to-one lessons with a professional, at Makena Landing Park. The format suits a family with children, provided they are comfortable in the water. Ask the operator for the minimum age before booking. Watch the calendar, as it is this product’s weak point: it is open only 51 days out of 91, meaning 40 closed days in the window. If your dates are fixed, book early. At €153.17 per adult, it costs the same as the stand up paddle, for a shorter and more family-friendly format.
- One-to-one lesson led by a professional
- Meeting point at Makena Landing Park
- Open 51 days out of 91: 40 closed, including the first 21 days of January

8. Semi-private surf lesson in Lahaina, 2 to 6 people
This excursion is one of the two semi-private formats in the selection, alongside the Lahaina lesson (6), and we keep it for its rating. The lesson takes two to six people, with experienced instructors and equipment provided. You will not be surfing alone with your instructor, and the 5.00 out of 5 rating from 102 reviews backs it up. At €149.54 per adult, it costs only €11 more than the Lahaina lesson (6): if you want experienced instructors and a group of up to six, this is the one; if you want the smallest possible group, compare the two listings before booking. The meeting point is Ukumehame Park, on the Lahaina side: look for the white surf truck on Highway 30. It is open 63 days out of 91 in the window, and free cancellation is shown on the listing.
- Experienced instructors, equipment provided
- Group of 2 to 6 people, semi-private format
- Ukumehame Park: look for the white surf truck
- Best time: 28 days closed, including 25 and 27 October

Book the bonus experiencePractical tips on the ground
Budget per person, not per tour listed. For two adults, the semi-private Lahaina surf lesson and the stand up paddle together come to €291.68 per person (€138.51 plus €153.17): a combination for under €300 for two water activities. The Road to Hana, by contrast, runs to hundreds of euros per person. Think about tips too. The travel guides we consulted suggest 15 to 20% for a private service, and the listing for the luxury Road to Hana (2) explicitly excludes tips. Calculated on the checked price of €725.02 per adult, that rate is an estimate of about €109 to €145 per person extra. Not every listing spells this out: where a listing excludes tips, budget for them.
Which tour for which traveller
For a first day in Maui, without wanting to drive, the VIP Hana tour (1) is the simplest day to organise. For an active couple who want to learn, the semi-private Lahaina surf lesson (6) is the cheapest format, with the semi-private Ukumehame lesson (8) as a slightly more group-oriented alternative. For a family with children who are comfortable in the water, the mermaid lesson (7) lasts 90 minutes, and the stand up paddle (5) remains a two-hour option; plan your dates, as the lesson is open only 51 days out of 91. For anyone who wants to walk and see waterfalls, the jeep (3) is the best fit. And for an overview of the island, the private flight (4) remains the fastest.
Sea turtles, a rule to know
The Maui Ocean Center reports that NOAA and the DLNR recommend staying at least 10 feet, or 3 metres, away from any turtle, at all times. The advice applies in the water as well as on the beach, for stand up paddle as well as surfing. The sources we consulted advise against touching or harassing a turtle; we have not checked the legal framework.
The black sand of Waiʻānapanapa
If your itinerary takes you to the black sand beach of Waiʻānapanapa, some sources describe a time-slot booking for access. When we reviewed them, we could not confirm the time-slot rules, the parking rules or the amounts on the official Hawaii state parks website. Check the fees and time slots directly on gostateparks.hawaii.gov.
Sunscreen and water
An ABC7 report says Hawaii bans the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. We could not confirm the date it took effect or its current status on an official site. A mineral sunscreen, based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, remains an option for water activities.
Mistakes to avoid
First mistake: booking without checking the open days. The jeep is open only 63 days out of 91, and the mermaid lesson 51 out of 91. Second mistake: confusing semi-private with private. The surf lessons in cards 6 and 8 are classed as semi-private, and the one in card 8 takes up to six people. Third mistake: forgetting tips and meals on long days. Fourth mistake: setting off on the Road to Hana without checking the county advisories on the day. Fifth mistake: paying for a jeep without free cancellation without reading the cancellation policy.
Last point, closed days. In the window from 23 October 2026 to 21 January 2027, the luxury Road to Hana is closed 12 days, the jeep 28 days and the mermaid lesson 40 days. The VIP tour, for its part, is open every day of the check. If your stay falls over Christmas or New Year, that is the criterion that should guide your choice, ahead of rating or price.
