Between November 5, 2026 and January 3, 2027, eight Viator tours can be booked from Banff, Calgary or Canmore, from €42 to €135 per adult (based on 2 people). Out of season, Moraine Lake is no longer reachable by vehicle: each listing states, or does not state, the replacement stop.

Checked on on the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Planning a stay in Banff in November, one question always comes up: how do you see Lake Louise and Moraine Lake without driving, and will Moraine Lake be on the itinerary? Its turquoise water is one of the images everyone associates with Alberta, but the road is closed to private vehicles, and the Parks Canada shuttle has not run since October 12, 2026. A tour that promises the lake in winter deserves a careful read.

We approached the problem from the other end. Rather than list tours that show the lake without saying when you will see it, we pulled the eight excursions from Banff, Calgary or Canmore that can be booked between November 5, 2026 and January 3, 2027, using the Viator partner API. For each one, you will find the price for two adults, the rating, the number of days the tour departs in that window, the cancellation terms, and what replaces the lake when it is not accessible.

The first option most people consider is the full-day tour from Calgary, like the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake tour from Calgary, Canmore or Banff, which also has the most reviews in the selection. But it is not the only format. There is a half-day tour at €42, small-group tours, a 12-seat minibus that makes eight stops, and a twelve-stop visit for those who want the story as much as the photo.

If you only have half a day, consider card 4 (€42.12, 4 to 5 hours). For a full day from Calgary without driving, card 1 (€64.15, 4,749 reviews, hotel pickup between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m.). For the lowest price on a full day, card 2 (€51.19, manual confirmation). Prices are per person, based on two adults, and ratings are those shown on each listing when we checked.

Why Banff: Moraine Lake is not open all year

Moraine Lake sits behind a rule that most tour pages leave out: its road is closed to private vehicles. Only the Parks Canada shuttle, licensed commercial operators and guests of Moraine Lake Lodge can get in. In 2026, the shuttle ran from June 1 to October 12, weather permitting, according to the official park page. We use this date from Parks Canada, not the October 13 closure date cited by The Banff Blog.

Lake Louise has its own shuttle, running from May 15 to October 12, 2026, with a free Lake Connector for ticket holders that links the two lakes in season. A free Park and Ride is set up at Lake Louise Ski Resort, with a one-hour time slot. Booking is mandatory. Reservations opened on April 15, 2026 at 8 a.m.: 40% of the spots were available that day, and the remaining 60% were released two days before each departure. Fees are CA$3.50 online and CA$5.50 by phone, charged once per booking and non-refundable.

In season, the shuttle runs every 30 minutes, from the first departure at 6:30 a.m. to the last return from Moraine Lake at 7:30 p.m. « Alpine Start » departures at 4 or 5 a.m. from the Lakeshore, by reservation and in limited numbers, ran until October 12, and Lakeshore parking costs CA$42 for drivers, according to The Banff Blog. None of this applies to the dates in this guide: these services do not run in November or December.

The lake’s history is told in several ways. The local account, repeated by Moraine Lake Lodge, credits Walter Wilcox with its discovery in 1899. That is a promotional source, so we cite it as a « local account, » not as established fact. The lake owes its shape to the moraine left by a glacier, a version that the Lodge and Wikipedia both support. What is established is the access rule: the road has been closed to private vehicles since 2023, according to Wikipedia.

What this means for you comes down to one question. A tour that advertises Moraine Lake in November should say what replaces the lake; a tour that does not mention it should be checked before you choose it. That is the reading grid for the comparison that follows: for each listing, the duration, the price per adult for two people, the rating, the cancellation terms, and the number of days the tour departs between November 5, 2026 and January 3, 2027.

Read the table as a choice grid. The « Available days » column flags the two tours that do not leave every day (cards 3 and 8). The « Duration » column separates the half-day, at 4 or 5 hours, from the full days of 8 to 11 hours, transport included. The price is for one adult based on two people; it does not include tips. All eight listings offer free cancellation, with a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure.

The 8 tours to book from November to January, and what replaces Moraine in the off-season

Moraine Lake and its peaks, tour departing from Calgary, Canmore or Banff

1. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake from Calgary, Canmore or Banff (Moraine: stop to be confirmed)

Rating 4.89 (4749 reviews) 8 to 10 h €64.15 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation Open 60 days out of 60

With 4,749 reviews, this is the most-read listing in the selection, and the simplest to organize: you do not have to drive on mountain roads, and pickup is at your hotel in Calgary, Canmore or Banff, between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. depending on the stop. The tour runs on all 60 days of the window, and confirmation is instant. The point to check is elsewhere. The listing mentions special access to Moraine Lake, but the shuttle stopped on October 12, 2026, and the road is no longer open to private vehicles. Between November and January, the listing says Marble Canyon replaces the lake. Ask the operator, before you pay, which stop is on the program for the date you choose. That question makes the difference between a great day and a disappointing one.

2. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, or Marble Canyon in the off-season

Rating 4.9 (1598 reviews) 8 to 10 h €51.19 per adult (based on 2 people) Manual confirmation after booking Open 60 days out of 60

This is the most readable option for anyone arriving from Calgary without a car. Pickup happens at three points: a bus stop in front of the Delta Calgary Downtown at 7:50 a.m., the Canmore Visitor Information Centre at 9:20 a.m., then Banff at 9:45 a.m., at the Elk + Avenue Hotel. A professional driver-guide drives all day, and bottled water is provided. The listing includes access to Moraine Lake until October 11 or 12. Off-season, Marble Canyon takes the place of the lake, a stop the operator presents as an alternative. Three things to check before booking: confirmation is manual after the instant booking, so wait for the reply before you lock in your dates; tipping is expected, between 15% and 20% according to the listing; and the price of €51.19 per person is the lowest of the full-day tours in the list.

  • Three pickup points, including Canmore and Banff
  • Marble Canyon offered when Moraine is closed

3. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in a small group, three departure cities (Moraine: stop to be confirmed)

Rating 4.96 (538 reviews) 8 to 10 h €57.03 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation Open 57 days out of 60

The small group is the main selling point of this listing: air-conditioned vehicle, tea and coffee on board, and park entrance fees included. Departures are from Calgary, Canmore or Banff, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. depending on the pickup point, and the driver-guide calls before departure to confirm the timing. The price is €57.03 per person. One availability note: the tour is open only 57 days out of the 60 in the window, which leaves three dates without a departure. Check yours in the calendar before you pay. A 4.96 rating from 538 reviews is solid for a small-group format. For November and December, the listing plans Johnston Canyon in place of the lake, from October 15 to June 1: ask what is on the program for your date before you book. The day lasts 8 to 10 hours.

Rating 4.82 (324 reviews) 4 to 5 h €42.12 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation Open 60 days out of 60

This is the only half-day tour in the selection, and the least expensive: 4 to 5 hours for €42.12 per person. There is no hotel pickup. You meet at the Banff train station information centre, for one of four departures: 7:15 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. The format suits anyone who wants to see Lake Louise and a mountain lake without giving up the whole day. The listing mentions Moraine Lake and Emerald Lake, and states that from October 13 to May 31, Emerald Lake takes the place of Moraine Lake. The vehicle is air-conditioned, water is provided, and the guide speaks several languages, without a guarantee of French. The CA$15 per-person tip is not included in the price. Confirmation is instant, which helps if you book the day before.

5. Four lakes in one day: Lake Louise, Bow, Emerald and Peyto

Rating 4.92 (229 reviews) 10 h €64.15 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation Open 60 days out of 60

This is the only listing that accounts for the change of season: it advertises Moraine from June to mid-October and Bow Lake in winter. Between November and January, you will therefore see Bow Lake, Emerald Lake, Lake Louise and Peyto Lake, along the Icefields Parkway. It is also the listing that covers the most lakes in the selection, with four stops announced in a single 10-hour day. Three pickup points: Calgary at 7:00 a.m., on 4th Avenue SE in front of the Delta Hotels; Canmore at 8:15 a.m., at Travel Alberta; then Banff. The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide speaks several languages. The listing provides crampons and a hot drink in winter, a real advantage for a trip between November and January. The tip is CA$15 per person.

Rating 5.00 (140 reviews) 10 to 11 h €135.44 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation Open 60 days out of 60

This listing has the highest rating in the list, 5.00 out of 5, but from only 140 reviews: the sample is small, so read it with caution. The format is a small group that covers twelve stops in the Rockies and in Yoho, with a guide trained in photography and storytelling. If you want to understand the landscapes rather than just pass through them, this is the tour in the selection that goes furthest in that direction. Meeting point is the IGA supermarket car park in Banff, and the guide calls you before departure. The day lasts 10 to 11 hours. At €135.44 per person, it is the most expensive tour on the list; water and the national park entrance fee are included. Off-season, the listing names Emerald Lake and the natural bridge in place of Moraine, but the program for your dates is not confirmed: ask for it in writing before you pay.

Rating 4.98 (1030 reviews) 10 to 11 h €103.16 to €128.96 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation Open 60 days out of 60

A 12-seat minibus, eight stops including Johnston Canyon, a route that runs from Lake Louise to Moraine Lake: this is the most varied format in the selection, and the short stops punctuate the drive more often than in the other listings. With 1,030 reviews and a 4.98 rating, the listing is solid. Two points to settle before you pay. First, it advertises access to Moraine Lake from June 1 to October 10. Parks Canada uses October 12 as the end of the season, and no service serves the lake between October 13 and June 1: ask for the replacement stop in writing. Second, no pickup point is detailed in the listing, to be confirmed at booking. The price ranges from €103.16 to €128.96 per person depending on the options. Park entrance, water and an air-conditioned vehicle are included.

8. Day in Banff National Park with a family-run operator

Rating 4.99 (1182 reviews) 10 h €64.15 per adult (based on 2 people) Instant confirmation Open 39 days out of 60

A family-run company, more than 1,180 reviews and a 4.99 rating: the listing has a broad base of reviews, and it does not stop at Moraine Lake. The package includes park entrance fees, crampons for walking on snow and ice, a certified tour guide, and the round-trip transport. Two caveats. First, the tour is open only 39 days out of the 60 in the window: check the dates without a departure one by one in the calendar, and do not count on any particular day. Second, no pickup point is published. Ask the operator where it picks you up before you pay. The listing presents Moraine Lake as a seasonal stop, so the program changes in the off-season. If your dates fall on an open day and the starting point suits you, this is a guided winter day at €64.15 per person.

Practical tips on site

Three realities weigh on a day in Banff in November and December, and they are not the ones of summer. First, cold and snow: the crampons, included in cards 5 and 8, are useful on icy trails, and it is wise to bring shoes with good grip for the other tours. Next, connectivity: there is no mobile coverage at Moraine Lake, according to The Banff Blog, so download your maps and tickets before you set out. Finally, park entry: it costs CA$12.25 per adult per day in 2026, according to Parks Canada’s 2026 fee schedule.

The price shown is not always the final price. The park entrance appears in the inclusions of cards 3, 6, 7 and 8. Card 1 mentions a Moraine Lake entrance fee, to be confirmed. Cards 2, 4 and 5 do not mention it: ask before you book, especially if you are several people. Tipping is also your responsibility. The listing for card 2 indicates 15 to 20% for the driver-guide, and those for cards 4 and 5 ask for CA$15 per person.

Three mistakes come up often, and they are easy to avoid:

  • Looking for the Parks Canada shuttle in your November itinerary. It ran until October 12, 2026; for spring 2027, watch for the reservation opening, which took place on April 15 at 8 a.m. in 2026.
  • Booking a tour that advertises the lake without asking for the replacement stop. Some listings name the stop that replaces the lake in winter, others do not: ask before you pay, card by card.
  • Not checking the pickup point. Card 7 does not detail it, card 8 publishes none; card 4 starts at the Banff train station, not at your hotel.
  • Forgetting about language. The listings describe a « multilingual » or « local » guide; none guarantees French. Ask before you pay, especially for a 10-hour day where the commentary matters as much as the scenery.

For clothing, bring a warm jacket, gloves and a spare layer: the day combines 8 to 11 hours outdoors and in the vehicle. At Moraine Lake, the walk is short: a few hundred metres to the Rockpile, with a gentle gradient; the effort comes mainly from the day in the vehicle and the cold. These tips do not depend on any operator and apply even if you choose another tour from the list.

Frequently asked questions

Which Banff tour has the best rating?

Card 6 has the highest rating, 5.00 out of 5, but from only 140 reviews, at €135.44 per adult for two people. For a rating based on a larger sample, look at card 8 (4.99 from 1,182 reviews) or card 7 (4.98 from 1,030 reviews). Details for card 6.

Can you see Moraine Lake in November or December?

Not by shuttle, which has not run since October 12, 2026, and not in a private vehicle, since the road is closed to private cars. Some listings still advertise the lake. Cards 1 and 2 cite Marble Canyon as the replacement stop, card 3 Johnston Canyon, cards 4 and 6 Emerald Lake, and card 5 Bow Lake. When a listing does not say which one, ask in writing before you pay.

Do I need to book the Parks Canada shuttle if I take a tour?

No. Tours arrange their own transport, and the Parks Canada shuttle does not run on the dates in this guide. It is still useful for anyone visiting the lake alone in season: booking is mandatory, with a CA$3.50 online fee. 2026 reservations opened on April 15 at 8 a.m.; check the official Parks Canada page for 2027.

Can I cancel a tour for free?

All eight listings offer free cancellation, with a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure (terms checked on October 22). Confirm the deadline on the listing before you pay.

How much should I tip?

The listing for card 2 indicates 15 to 20% for the driver-guide. Those for cards 4 and 5 ask for CA$15 per person. These amounts are not included in the prices shown: plan for them on top of the tour budget, in local currency or by card depending on what the operator accepts.

Do the guides speak French?

Not always, and no listing guarantees it. Cards 4 and 5 mention a multilingual guide, card 2 a professional driver-guide. Ask the operator before you book whether the commentary is given in French, especially for a day of 8 to 11 hours, where the quality of the storytelling matters as much as the scenery.
