A private tour of Washington DC costs from $171.43 to $430.00 per person for two adults. The ten listings show combined ratings from 4.79 to 5.00. It is worth it for its length, its guide, or access to one specific site. For the Capitol, the free tour remains the reference.

Verified on on the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

When you look for a private tour of Washington, you quickly face a question of format: why pay a guide just for yourself, when the Capitol can be visited for free and search results also indicate free entry to several Smithsonian museums and the National Archives? The answer depends on what you buy. A private tour buys time, a guide who speaks only to your group, and sometimes access that an ordinary visitor does not get. It does not buy the right to enter everywhere.

The ten listings in this ranking were checked on October 22, 2026 on Viator, private option only: semi-private and group rates are not included in the prices shown. The most highly rated, the guided tour of Arlington National Cemetery, scores 5.00 out of 5 with 157 combined reviews. Prices are per person for two adults.

Read first the section on free entry points: it explains what the paid tour adds and what it does not replace. The table follows, then the listings ranked by rating.

What free visits already offer, and what a private tour adds

Washington has several free entry points. Before paying for a private tour, check what you can already see for free, and what the listing promises on top.

The Capitol offers free guided tours, with online booking recommended. The official site advises arriving before 2:30 p.m. This is the most useful option for the inside of the building: the private Capitol Hill tour explicitly excludes the interior, and the other listings do not mention it.

Arlington National Cemetery is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the official page consulted on October 22, 2026. By car, adults must show a REAL ID-compliant ID at the security checkpoint. That same page gives no schedule for the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Arlington guided tour sells a guide and a time slot, but no ceremony time appears on its listing: ask the operator whether the changing of the guard is part of the itinerary before you book.

The Lincoln Memorial needs a specific reading. The National Park Service page says the memorial chamber and exterior are free and open to the public, with no published hours. The Lincoln Memorial is not the subject of a standalone private tour in this selection; the night tour lists it among its views.

The Smithsonian museums do not charge admission, according to Smithsonian pages found through search (the official page could not be read directly). A private Smithsonian tour therefore buys the guide, not the ticket. The National Archives also appear to be free to enter, according to information found on visit.archives.gov (page found through search, not read directly). The VIP tour buys priority access to the Rotunda, not the right to enter.

What a private tour actually buys, according to the listings: a guide reserved for your group, a chosen duration, an itinerary you can adjust (for several products), and, for vehicle formulas, transport with hotel pickup. Five of the ten listings include hotel pickup, one of them only at certain hotels. What a private tour does not replace: the inside of the Capitol, which the Capitol Hill listing explicitly excludes.

The window checked, from November 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027, covers late autumn and the holiday period, which the tourism office Destination DC promotes on its site. The listings remain open for booking on most days of this period, with differences from one product to another: 51 to 60 days open out of 60, and only 29 for the Capitol Hill tour. These days are counted across all options combined: the availability of the private option alone may be rarer.

1. Exclusive guided tour of Arlington National Cemetery and the changing of the guard

Rating 5.00 (157 reviews) 2.5 hours From $259.70 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

A 2.5-hour walking tour with a guide reserved for your group, in Arlington National Cemetery. It is the best-rated of the ten, and the one that suits a solo traveler or a couple who want to understand the graves and monuments without following a crowd. The meeting point is inside the Visitor Center, after the security check, near the statue of the soldier with the bugle: the listing specifies it, so arrive with some margin. The trap to avoid is the title. It announces the changing of the guard, but neither the frequency nor the time of the ceremony appears on the official page consulted. Ask the operator for the day and time before you build your morning around it. The operator says the tour runs in any weather. The listing does specify, however, that it is not accessible to people with reduced mobility or in wheelchairs. Ideal timing: a morning, since the tour lasts 2.5 hours and stays open 59 days out of 60. The days open are counted across all options combined.

  • 2.5 hours, guide reserved for your group
  • Meeting point at the Visitor Center, after security
  • Not wheelchair accessible, per the listing

2. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: private guided tour of 2 hours

Rating 4.96 (473 reviews) 2 hours From $286.20 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

Two hours with a guide reserved for your group in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Admission to the museum is free, according to Smithsonian pages found through search: what you pay for here is the guide, who chooses the galleries and answers your questions. The meeting point is precise: the steps of the Madison Drive NW entrance, facing the lawn of the National Mall. The listing says the tour is wheelchair accessible, excluding the semi-private option, which matters if one of your travelers uses a wheelchair. It suits a family with children curious about nature, or a couple who want a chosen route rather than wandering. The trap to avoid is counting on food and drinks: they are not included, nor are tips or transport. Plan your lunch before or after, and keep time for the rest of the collections, since two guided hours cover only part of the museum. Ideal timing: a half day, since the tour lasts only 2 hours.

  • 2 hours with a reserved guide
  • Wheelchair accessible, per the listing
  • Food, drinks and tips excluded

3. Private night tour of the Washington monuments, 10 guests maximum

Rating 4.96 (357 reviews) 2 to 3 hours From $337.50 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

A private vehicle for up to 10 guests, two to three hours at night, with photo stops in front of the illuminated monuments. It is the only listing in the selection designed for the night alone, and the one that announces the Lincoln Memorial among its views, along with the White House, the Capitol and the Washington Monument; the limousine (listing 9) also covers the daytime. The $337.50 price shown is per person for two adults, for the private option. If your group is larger, neither the listing nor our survey gives a group rate: ask the operator. For whom: a small group of up to 10 people who want to see the monuments lit up in a single evening. The meeting point is not set by the operator: pickup is at the hotel, and the location is given at booking. The trap is thinking this tour replaces a daytime visit to the Lincoln Memorial: it includes only a photo stop. Umbrellas or ponchos are provided in case of rain, and the route can be personalized. With 51 days open out of 60, all options combined, this is the most constrained listing of the lot after Capitol Hill. Book it for your first evening, so you can see the monuments before visiting them the next day. Ideal timing: an evening of 2 to 3 hours, booked early given the 51 days open out of 60.

  • 10 guests maximum, customizable route
  • Umbrellas or ponchos provided

4. Private 4-hour tour of Washington DC with the changing of the guard announced

Rating 4.94 (198 reviews) 4 hours From $250.00 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

Four hours in private with a guide licensed in DC, hotel pickup, and a return to the same place: the format of a full day without driving. The guide accompanies the group to the sites, except when parking makes a stop impossible, the listing says. The title announces the changing of the guard ceremony. Neither the frequency nor the time of this ceremony appears on the official pages consulted: ask the operator how the ceremony fits into the itinerary before you book. For whom: a family that wants to see everything at once, with water on board and an itinerary adjusted to your requests, or a couple passing through who do not want to carry a bag. The trap is thinking museum entries are included: the listing does not mention them, and tips are not included. An early-morning start leaves time to see the essentials without rushing from one monument to the next. Ideal timing: a full day, since the tour lasts 4 hours.

5. VIP tour of the National Archives: priority access to the Rotunda

Rating 4.92 (422 reviews) 1 to 2.5 hours From $286.20 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

The National Archives hold the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in the Rotunda. This tour buys priority access to the building and the Rotunda, with a reserved guide. That is its main argument: the ordinary visitor waits in line, while this tour’s group goes in first. The duration varies from 60 to 150 minutes depending on the listing, which cannot be fixed in advance: plan for the longest and keep the afternoon free. The meeting point is at the foot of the front staircase of the building, on Constitution Avenue NW. For whom: a traveler who wants to see the founding documents without spending an hour in line, or a group of political history enthusiasts. The trap is to pay for an entry that the information gathered presents as free, without the priority: the VIP tour is only worth it for the queue and the guide. The listing includes neither transport nor tips. Ideal timing: a half day, leaving some margin, since the duration ranges from 1 to 2.5 hours.

  • Priority access to the Rotunda
  • 1 to 2.5 hours depending on the listing
  • Transport and tips excluded

6. Private Washington DC tour in 4 hours, by Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes Sprinter

Rating 4.90 (1716 reviews) 4 hours From $275.00 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

Four hours in a Cadillac Escalade ESV or a Mercedes Sprinter, depending on the option, with a driver-guide licensed for the tour. It is the most-reviewed listing of the selection, with 1,716 combined reviews. For whom: a family that has already walked a lot, a group of friends, or a traveler who wants to cover the major monuments by car. Pickup is at certain hotels only, to indicate at checkout: the listing does not say which ones, so check whether your hotel is one of them. The trap is the language. The listing names English, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, to request at booking, and French is not among them. The price goes from $275.00 to $325.00 per person depending on the option. Water is offered on request, but tips and onboard restrooms are not included. This is the choice for a traveler who prefers the road to walking and speaks one of the offered languages. Ideal timing: a full day, since the tour lasts 4 hours and stays open 60 days out of 60, all options combined.

  • 4 hours, driver-guide licensed
  • Pickup at certain hotels only

7. Smithsonian National Museum of American History: private guided tour of 2.5 hours

Rating 4.87 (272 reviews) 2.5 hours From $286.20 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

Two and a half hours with a guide reserved for your group in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The angle differs from the natural history museum on the list: here, objects linked to the political, cultural and technical life of the United States structure the visit. The meeting point is near the fountain at the Constitution Avenue entrance, easy to find from the National Mall. The listing says the tour is wheelchair accessible, excluding the semi-private option. For whom: a traveler who wants to understand the country rather than its landscapes, or a group mixing adults and teenagers interested in history. The trap is wanting to cover both Smithsonian museums in one day: each is vast, and a 2.5-hour guided tour covers only part of either one. Transport and tips are not included. Choose this museum if you have already seen nature and want to understand American history through specific objects. Ideal timing: a half day, since the tour lasts 2.5 hours.

8. Capitol Hill on foot: Supreme Court, Library of Congress and the Capitol grounds

Rating 4.85 (195 reviews) 2.5 hours From $259.70 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

A private walking tour of 2.5 hours around the Capitol, with the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress and the grounds of the building. This is not a tour of the inside of the Capitol: the listing specifies that the interior visit is not included. At the end of the route, passes for the House or the Senate are provided, without a guide. For whom: a traveler interested in institutions and political architecture who does not mind walking. The meeting point is outside the Capitol South metro station, at 1st and C Streets SE. The trap is availability: this tour is open only 29 days out of the 60 checked, all options combined, the most constrained of the ten. Book early if it matters to you. For the inside of the Capitol, use the building’s free programme, which is booked online. Transport and tips are not included. Choose this tour if your priority is the legislative district, not the inside of the building. Ideal timing: a half day, within a very narrow date window, since the tour lasts 2.5 hours.

9. Stretch limousine by day and night, all fees and taxes included

Rating 4.80 (107 reviews) 3 to 4 hours From $330.00 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

A private day or night tour in a stretch limousine, 3 to 4 hours, with hotel pickup. The listing says all fees and taxes are included, with no exclusions listed, which sets it apart from most others. The price, however, depends on the option: the range runs from $330.00 to $430.00 per person for two adults. Compare the price of the option you choose, not the low end of the range. For whom: a birthday, a marriage proposal, or a trip where the effect matters as much as the visit. With 107 combined reviews, this is the least-reviewed listing of the ten, and its 4.80 rating is the second lowest of the selection, just above the customizable vehicle tour (4.79). It remains solid, but ask the operator for the route details: the listing calls it customizable without giving its content. Bottled water is announced on board. The pickup place is not set by the operator: it is given at booking. Ideal timing: an evening or a day, since the tour lasts 3 to 4 hours.

10. Private, customizable tour of Washington DC in an air-conditioned vehicle

Rating 4.79 (180 reviews) 3 to 4 hours From $171.43 per adult (2 travelers) Instant confirmation

The entry-level tour of the selection: from $171.43 per person for two adults, a private air-conditioned vehicle tour of 3 to 4 hours, with water and private transport. The itinerary is customizable. For whom: a couple or a small group who want to see the major monuments by car without paying the highest format on the list. The trap is the price range, which runs from $171.43 to $321.43 per person depending on the option, nearly double. Before booking, check the option chosen, the vehicle capacity and the number of people announced. Tips are not included. Pickup is at the hotel, and the location is given at booking. With 180 combined reviews and a 4.79 rating, this is less reviewed than the big names on the list: read the recent reviews before paying. It is the right choice if you want a city tour by car on a tight budget. Ideal timing: a half day or a full day, since the tour lasts 3 to 4 hours.

Preparing the trip

Three points to settle before you leave. Practical tips on site

Booking: not all dates are equal. The Capitol Hill tour is open only 29 days out of 60, the night tour 51 out of 60, the VIP Archives tour 58 out of 60. The others show 57 to 60 days. These days are counted across all options combined: the private option alone may be rarer. Check your chosen date at booking: the check is dated October 22, 2026, and availability changes.

Budget: from $171 to $430 per person. The median of the ten listings’ lowest prices, per person for two adults, is about $280.60. The cheapest is the customizable vehicle tour, at $171.43; the most expensive is the day and night limousine, at up to $430.00 depending on the option. For a shorter format, the Capitol Hill tour and a museum tour cost $259.70 and $286.20 per person respectively, for two and a half hours.

Tips: no official amount. Eight of the ten listings state that tips are not included. No official source gives a scale: decide based on the service you received, with no figure imposed.

Meeting point: check before you leave. Five listings include hotel pickup, one of them only at certain hotels, and the location is given at booking. The other five have a named meeting point: the Arlington Visitor Center, the steps of the Natural History Museum, the steps of the Archives, the fountain on Constitution Avenue, and the Capitol South metro station for Capitol Hill. At Arlington, you must pass the security check before the meeting time.

Traveler profiles. For a family, the two Smithsonian tours and the 4-hour vehicle tour offer a simple framework. For a couple, the night tour and the day and night limousine give the most distinctive format. For reduced mobility, the two Smithsonian tours are listed as wheelchair accessible, excluding the semi-private option. The Arlington tour is not, and the data gathered do not give the walking distance of the walking tours: ask before booking.

A typical day. One possible day: the Arlington tour in the morning, then, in the afternoon, the VIP Archives tour, which lasts from 1 to 2.5 hours. Arlington and the Archives are two separate places: the trip between them is not measured by the listings, so allow plenty of time and confirm the departure time with the operator the day before.

Mistakes to avoid. Three recur. Thinking a private tour opens the Capitol: the interior visit is excluded from the Capitol Hill tour. Booking without checking the date window: a tour is open only 29 days out of 60. Forgetting a REAL ID-compliant ID if you drive to Arlington.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private tour worth its price compared with free visits?

Yes, if you are buying what free visits do not give: a guide reserved for your group, a chosen duration and, for some listings, transport with hotel pickup. No, if the goal is only to enter a building. The Capitol can be visited for free; search results also indicate free entry to several Smithsonian museums and the National Archives, which we could not check directly on the official pages. A private tour does not replace that access. It serves what free access does not offer: time and a guide’s voice. Among these listings, only the VIP Archives tour adds priority access, to the Rotunda.

Which private tour should I choose for a first visit to Washington?

The walking tour of Arlington National Cemetery, rated 5.00 out of 5 with 157 reviews, gives a clear starting point, provided you bring a REAL ID-compliant ID if you drive. To cover more ground in one day, the 4-hour vehicle tour with a driver-guide is better suited. If you only want an hour or two on one subject, the 2-hour Natural History Museum tour or the VIP Archives tour (1 to 2.5 hours) are more focused.

Can you go inside the Capitol during a private tour?

Not with the private Capitol Hill tour. The listing specifies that the interior visit is not included, and that passes for the House or the Senate are provided at the end of the tour, without a guide. For the interior, use the Capitol’s free guided tour programme, where online booking is recommended. The official site advises arriving before 2:30 p.m.

Is the Lincoln Memorial included in a private tour?

Not as the object of a standalone private tour in this selection. The night tour lists it among its views. The Lincoln Memorial remains free to access, according to the National Park Service: the memorial chamber and exterior are open to the public, with no published hours. So do not book a private tour for that monument alone.

What language does the guide speak?

For the 4-hour tour in a Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes Sprinter, the listing names English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, to request at booking. French is not among them. For the other tours, the guide’s language does not appear in the data gathered on October 22, 2026. Check it on the listing before paying, and ask the operator if it is not written there.

Should I book far in advance?

Yes for some tours. The Capitol Hill private tour is open only 29 days out of the 60 days of the window checked, from November 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027. The others have between 51 and 60 days open, all options combined; the private option alone may be rarer. All list instant confirmation, but availability changes: the check is dated October 22, 2026, and the date must be confirmed when you pay.
