For a first trip to London, eight experiences rated from 4.79 to 4.98 out of 5 cover the essentials: a walk past the major sites, the Tower, Westminster and the British Museum.

For two travellers, the five-hour walk costs €58.23 per person.

Start with that walk to get your mental map of the city.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

London cannot be discovered in a week or in a day. Distances are measured in Tube stations, each neighbourhood deserves half a day, and the best-known monuments compete for the same time slots. For a first trip of three to five days, the real question is not « what should I see? » but « what should I book, and in which order? ». On the Viator partner API, we looked at the city’s experiences rated at least 4.7 out of 5 with at least 100 reviews, then kept eight products that cover the great landmarks, the museums, the Thames, the table and a little comfort.

Start with the historic pubs tour of the City, the best-rated tour of the selection, if you want an afternoon with a guide in a lively neighbourhood. If you would rather have the map of the city from day one, the five-hour walk past some thirty major sites does that job better than any map. Each listing shows what is included, the duration, the meeting point and the detail that changes the decision: an entry already covered, a manual confirmation, a price per vehicle rather than per person. Prices are quoted for two travellers, checked over a window from 5 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, and they may change.

Why London is best discovered through its landmarks: the Pixidia angle

London has two faces for a first trip. The first is that of the monuments everyone knows: Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the Tower of London, the British Museum. The second is that of the neighbourhoods you discover on foot, from the City to the banks of the Thames, which give the city its rhythm. A well-built first visit alternates between the two without pretending to cover everything. Three days are enough for the great landmarks if each day has a thread running through it; five days let you add an excursion and some time for the neighbourhoods.

The format and the price vary from one listing to another. The walk past thirty major sites lasts 5 hours and costs €58.23 per person, with no paid admission included. The pub tour lasts 3 h 30 and costs €42.46 per person, with drinks and meals extra. The private black cab lasts 4 hours and costs €376.05 per vehicle for two travellers, with no pickup at Heathrow. The Borough Market food tour lasts 3 hours and costs €111.36 per person, with a manual confirmation. These differences matter as much as the place: the table below compares the durations, prices and availability of the eight listings so you can choose according to your pace.

The calendar matters too. From 5 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, the days are short in December, which favours morning visits and products that finish before evening. The Regent Street Christmas lights are announced for 5 November 2026 according to Londonist, the first day of our price window. They do not change what the products include, but they may add to the crowds on the central streets.

Among the experiences that meet our rating and review criteria, we set aside duplicates: a second Westminster tour, a second general walking tour and a second cruise, as they overlapped with the products we kept. A day trip was also left off this list. Stonehenge and Bath lasts 10 hours 30, costs €83.70 per person for two travellers, and the API flags it as « probably sold out »: only 44 days out of 61 are available in our check. It has its place in our article on day trips from London.

The 8 best experiences in London for a first trip

Group on a guided tour along a street in the City of London
Source: Viator

1. A tour of the historic pubs of the City, with a guide

Rating 4.98 (11890 reviews) 3 h 30 €42.46 per person (base 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

This is the tour I would put first in the hands of someone discovering London. Not because it is the most spectacular, but because it sets the tone. The route stops in at least four historic pubs in the City, and the group is capped at fourteen people, which leaves the guide time to answer real questions. For a first trip, it is the afternoon that wipes out the fatigue of the morning museums. The catch is simple: the price covers the tour, but drinks and meals are paid on the spot. Put them in your budget when you book, or the bill at the end of the route will surprise you.

  • Visit to the historic pubs of the City
  • Group of 14 people maximum
  • Drinks and meals paid on the spot
  • Meeting point: exit 2 of Saint Paul station, in front of Caffe Nero, Panyer Alley

2. The British Museum with a guide, in a small group

Rating 4.97 (1161 reviews) 2 h 30 €105.00 per person (base 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

The British Museum is one of London’s most visited museums, and the difficulty on a first visit is knowing where to start. This format, limited to eight people, answers that question. A professional guide chooses the objects, tells their stories and links the galleries together, instead of leaving you to wander between the cases. For a first trip, it is an efficient way to understand what the collection holds before you come back on your own. The point many people miss: the permanent collection is free to enter according to the sources consulted, so the price pays for the guide, not for access. Temporary exhibitions are paid and not included. Check the current exhibition before you book, and choose a morning slot if you want a quieter visit.

  • Professional guide, eight people maximum
  • Permanent collection free to enter according to the sources consulted
  • Temporary exhibitions paid, not included

Fast boat on the Thames in London

3. A fast crossing of the Thames from the London Eye

Rating 4.96 (4352 reviews) 50 minutes €78.79 per person (base 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

The Thames links all of London’s landmarks, and seeing them from the water changes how you read the city. This fast boat, a RIB, leaves from the pontoon under the London Eye and lasts fifty minutes, with a skipper, a guide and a life jacket provided. It is the only waterborne experience in the selection, and its short format fits easily into an afternoon between two land visits. A skipper and a guide are on board; the heart of the experience remains speed and the views over the river. For a first trip, it is a breather in a busy programme. The ideal moment is a dry day, since the ride is in the open air, and the trap is booking it late in the day in December, when it is cold on the water.

  • Professional skipper and expert guide
  • Life jacket provided
  • Departure from the London Eye pontoon

4. A private black cab tour, so you don’t have to walk

Rating 4.95 (3083 reviews) 4 h €376.05 per vehicle for two travellers (€188.03 per person) Private tour

Not every first trip suits walking, and some travellers prefer to save their energy for the evening. This private formula puts the day in the hands of a driver-guide in a London black cab, with photo stops and short walks. The price applies to one vehicle for two travellers, not to one person: that detail changes the comparison, because the figure of €188.03 per person is only a calculation. The journey starts in central London, and pickup at Heathrow is not included: if you arrive through the airport, arrange your transfer separately. The trap, on a tight budget, is comparing it with group tours. It makes most sense for a small group, which shares the cost of the vehicle and enjoys an itinerary tailored to it.

  • Private vehicle (TX, TX4 or Mercedes Vito)
  • Professional driver-guide
  • Pickup in central London, not Heathrow

5. A food tour of London Bridge and Borough Market

Rating 4.89 (2227 reviews) 3 h €111.36 per person (base 2 travellers) Manual confirmation

Borough Market is one of the places where you understand British food beyond the pubs. This three-hour tour strings together seven tastings of local specialities, with drinks (ale, beer, cider, mead) and non-alcoholic options. The group is capped at twelve people, so the guide can stop in front of each stall. It is the densest product in the selection when it comes to food: it can stand in for lunch, provided you arrive with a reasonable appetite and do not add another tasting the same afternoon. The catch is the confirmation, which is not instant. Book several days ahead so the slot is confirmed before you build the rest of your day around it.

  • Seven tastings of British specialities
  • Non-alcoholic options available
  • Twelve people maximum
  • Meeting point: opposite the Evans Cycle Shop, Dukes Street Hill, near London Bridge station

6. Westminster, Big Ben and Buckingham in half a day

Rating 4.88 (1199 reviews) 3 h 30 €95.83 per person (base 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

The grand royal tour of London fits into half a day, with a Blue Badge guide and a fast-track ticket for Westminster Abbey included. You visit the Abbey from the inside, then see Big Ben and Buckingham Palace from the outside. For a first trip, this is often the tour that gives you the geography of the centre: you understand where the river, Parliament and the parks are, and the following days become simpler. The point to note is the entry: it is included in the price, so do not add it to the official ticket. The State Rooms of Buckingham Palace only open in summer, from 9 July to 27 September 2026 according to an extract from VisitLondon: in winter, the palace is seen from the outside, and you should tell children before you set off. Availability is the lowest of the selection, 35 days out of 61: book as soon as your dates are fixed.

  • Fast-track ticket for Westminster Abbey included
  • Blue Badge guide
  • Big Ben and Buckingham seen from the outside
  • Meeting point: Westminster station, exit 4 (Jubilee, Circle and District lines), according to the supplier’s description

7. About thirty major sites on foot, with a local guide

Rating 4.85 (2676 reviews) 5 h €58.23 per person (base 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

If you only had one day to get to know the city, this would be it. Five hours on foot, in a small group, with a local guide who links about thirty major sites together. The tour gives you the mental map of London, the one that stops you getting lost in the following days and lets you choose later which paid visits to make, with full knowledge of the options. It includes no admission: the monuments are seen from the outside, and the budget for museums and towers is planned separately. It is also one of the two least expensive of the eight listings, alongside the pub tour. The ideal moment is the first day, to order the visits that follow. The trap is physical: five hours of walking call for good shoes, a planned break and water, especially in winter. According to the listing, the group size is between ten and twenty people.

  • Local guide, walking route
  • No paid admission included
  • Starts in front of the Ritz hotel, Piccadilly

8. The Tower of London with a Beefeater and the Crown Jewels

Rating 4.79 (491 reviews) 2 h €90.13 to €113.24 per person (base 2 travellers) Instant confirmation

The Tower of London is almost always on the list for a first trip, and this format covers the essentials: a timed entry, access to the Jewel House where the Crown Jewels are displayed, and a guided tour in English. Entry is included in the price, so do not buy it a second time. Sampled across six dates in the window, the range runs from €90.13 to €113.24 per person: the price varies with the time slot, so compare the total before you book. The Express option does not necessarily include meeting a Yeoman Warder, the Tower’s Beefeater: if that moment matters to you, choose an option other than Express. The ideal time is a morning slot, which leaves the rest of the day free. The rating is the lowest in the selection (4.79), but it rests on 491 reviews.

  • Timed entry to the Tower included
  • Access to the Jewel House (Crown Jewels)
  • Guided tour in English
  • Meeting point: in front of the Tower shop, opposite the entrance, arrive 10 minutes early

Preparing your trip

Practical tips on the ground

Getting around

Contactless payment, with a bank card or a phone, caps your daily spending on transport in zones 1 and 2. The exact amount changes: check the official Transport for London website before you travel, rather than relying on a figure taken from a third-party source. Almost all the meeting points in the selection are close to a station, but check access on the listing, especially for Borough Market and the London Eye departure.

Entry formalities and taxes

Travellers from France need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, the ETA, before departure. At the time of writing, the official GOV.UK page gives £20. That page did not show a readable update date: check the amount when you apply. As of the check date, no tourist tax is in force in London, according to a secondary source. A measure has been mentioned without a rate or an effective date: do not treat it as settled until it is official.

Tickets and entry fees

Two of the eight experiences already include a paid entry. The Westminster tour includes the fast-track ticket for the Abbey, and the Tower tour includes the timed entry. Do not buy these tickets on the spot. For the Abbey, the official visit page recommends booking; its opening hours, checked on 22 October 2026, are 9:30 to 16:30. For the Tower, the adult price varies depending on the sources consulted: check the official ticket office rather than a figure taken from a blog. At the British Museum, the permanent collection is free to enter according to a visitor guide, while temporary exhibitions are paid.

Calendar: Buckingham, illuminations and November

The State Rooms of Buckingham Palace only open in summer. According to an extract from VisitLondon, the period checked runs from 9 July to 27 September 2026, so it falls outside your window if you travel this winter. The Regent Street Christmas lights are announced for 5 November 2026, the first day of our price window. In our check, the Westminster tour is not open on 5 November: its first slot is on the 6th. For the other listings, check the date on the page before you book. If you want to see the lights switched on, book a walk or a tour for the following day.

A sample three-day programme

Day 1: the walk past thirty major sites (5 hours), then rest. Day 2: the British Museum in the morning (2 hours 30), the Tower of London in the afternoon (2 hours), and the City pub tour (3 hours 30) if you have the energy. Day 3: Westminster Abbey and Big Ben (3 hours 30), then the Thames crossing by boat (50 minutes) to end the day on the water. This programme is only a base: the durations come from the listings, but travel time between the sites still needs to be added.

Depending on your profile

On a small budget, the Harry Potter bonus tour (€23.05) and the pub tour (€42.46) are the cheapest; the five-hour walk (€58.23) follows. For a couple, the private taxi and the Borough Market food tour are the two formats to compare, and the semi-private British Museum tour gives a more personal exchange. For a first visit, start with the walk and with Westminster: these two tours give you the geographical reference point that makes everything else simpler. For reduced mobility, check the access conditions with the supplier before you book; the private taxi limits walking, since it is a vehicle for two travellers, with no group walking. For a family programme, check the age restrictions on the listing before you book if you are travelling with children.

Mistakes to avoid

First mistake: adding the official ticket to a tour that already includes it. Second mistake: comparing a price per person with a price per vehicle, as with the taxi. Third mistake: booking the food tour on the day, when its confirmation is not instant. Fourth mistake: choosing the Harry Potter tour as your first experience of the city, when it is aimed first at fans of the series. Finally, re-read each listing on the day you book: availability and options change, and the prices checked on 22 October 2026 are not guaranteed for the whole window.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does a first trip to London need?

Three days are enough for the great landmarks if each day has a thread: the walk past the major sites, the British Museum, Westminster and the Tower of London. Five days let you add an excursion out of the capital and some free time for the neighbourhoods. Beyond that, you mainly gain time for the neighbourhoods and museums you have not yet chosen.

Which experience is the best rated in the selection?

The historic pubs tour of the City has the best rating, 4.98 out of 5, from 11,890 reviews. It lasts 3 hours 30 and costs €42.46 per person for two travellers, with a group of 14 people maximum. Drinks and meals are paid on the spot. See the listing.

Are entry tickets included in the tours?

Yes, for two products: the Westminster tour includes the fast-track ticket for the Abbey, and the Tower tour includes the timed entry. No for the walk past the major sites, which is done from the outside, and no for the British Museum, where the guide is paid but temporary exhibitions remain paid. Check each listing before you book.

Do I need to book in advance?

Seven of the eight experiences have instant confirmation, but availability varies. The Westminster tour is available on only 35 days out of 61 in the window checked, and the Borough Market food tour needs a manual confirmation. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, starting with these two products.

Is the British Museum free?

The permanent collection is free to enter according to the sources consulted. The guided small-group tour is paid: it pays for the guide and the explanation of the objects, not for access to the museum. Temporary exhibitions are paid and are not included in this tour.

And for a day trip out of London?

This list stays focused on the capital. For a day trip, see our article on day trips from London. Stonehenge and Bath lasts 10 hours 30: a trip of that length should be planned as a full day, not as an afternoon outing.
