Eight tours link Ephesus to Selçuk from €44.41 per adult (base 2), lasting between 3 and 11 hours. Five are private, three are group tours, and the entry ticket is included only in some listings: each card says so. On a tight budget, choose the private visit; for a group, expect €99 to €155.

Checked on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Ephesus is a full-day trip from Selçuk, about three kilometres away. The question that comes up is therefore not whether to go, but which formula to choose. The Viator listings available in this area cover very different formats: a private three-hour visit focused on history, a full day with lunch, an excursion to Pamukkale. We kept eight products that combine a solid rating, enough reviews and real places on the period checked.

The best-rated product is the biblical tour of the House of the Virgin Mary and the ancient city: 4.98 out of 5 from 91 reviews, with entrance fees and skip-the-line included. It does not look like the others, because it reads the site through a religious lens rather than offering a general visit. For a first visit, the list below starts with it, then ranks the others by rating.

Each card repeats what is included and what is not, using the wording of the listing. You will see that five of the eight formulas are private: this is not a lack of choice, it is how this area works. Entry tickets to the site are included only in some listings. We show no opening hours as fact and no site entry ticket price: the sources available contradict each other, and the official source should be checked directly.

Why visit Ephesus from Selçuk

The site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Wikipedia, Ephesus), is within walking distance of Selçuk: the walk takes 20 to 25 minutes along the access road (Ephesian Tourism, route from Selçuk to Ephesus). Timing matters as much as distance. Cruise groups mostly arrive at Kuşadası between 9:30 and 11:30, which packs the entrance and the viewpoints; the flow is calmer before 9:30 and after 4 p.m. (Ephesian Tourism, crowding).

Selçuk, the small town next door, is the most convenient base. It is about 3 km from the site, with accommodation, a bus station and most of the offices that organise excursions. Almost all the formulas in this selection leave from Selçuk or Kuşadası; only one starts at the site’s south gate. Izmir, the nearest large city, has the airport. The transfer to Selçuk is by bus or taxi, and the sources do not give a reliable duration, so we do not give one (Wikipedia, Selçuk).

Three neighbouring places come up in the listings. The House of the Virgin Mary sits on Mount Koressos, about 7 km from Ephesus. This small stone house is revered by Christians and Muslims alike, and the Catholic Church recognised it in 1951, under Pius XII (Wikipedia, House of the Virgin Mary). The Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, now has only one column standing, in Selçuk. The Basilica of St John, on Ayasuluk hill, is associated with Saint John the Evangelist; it is often where operators meet their guests.

Pamukkale and Hierapolis, UNESCO sites since 1988, make up the only excursion in this selection that leaves Ephesus entirely behind. Finally, Şirince, a mountain village about 8 km from Selçuk known for its fruit wines, does not appear in any listing. It can fill out a day for anyone who has already seen the site.

The 8 Ephesus tours to book from Selçuk

Biblical tour of ancient Ephesus with a guide
Source: Viator

1. Biblical tour: House of the Virgin Mary and ancient city

Rating 4.98 (91 reviews) 5 to 6 hours €125.98 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Private tour

The best-rated listing in the selection, with 4.98 out of 5 from 91 reviews. It does not follow the order of a general visit: it links the House of the Virgin Mary on Mount Koressos with the ancient city. The private guide, with a biblical focus, connects the sites to the texts, which changes the day for anyone who knows those stories. Entrance fees and skip-the-line are included in the price, which is not guaranteed elsewhere in this selection. Lunch, however, is not included: it is paid separately, according to the listing, to check before booking. I recommend it to anyone who wants an in-depth day around one thread, rather than a succession of sites. Pickup, from the hotel or the port, is to be confirmed when booking.

  • Entrance fees and skip-the-line included
  • Private guide with a biblical focus, air-conditioned vehicle
  • Lunch not included

2. Private tour with skip-the-line: Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary

Rating 4.94 (589 reviews) 4 to 6 hours €44.41 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Private tour

The lowest price among the private formulas: €44.41 per adult on a two-person basis, with 589 reviews for a 4.94 rating. The format is simple: a private luxury vehicle, an English-speaking guide, pickup at the hotel or the port, and skip-the-line. What changes the reading of the price is what is not included: entrance tickets to the site and to the House of the Virgin Mary are not included. Add them to your budget before comparing. Parking and taxes are included. The announced duration, 4 to 6 hours, depends on the group’s pace. I recommend it for a first visit on a tight budget, provided you plan for the tickets separately. The exact meeting point is confirmed when booking.

3. Private tour with lunch and pickup

Rating 4.94 (181 reviews) 7 hours 15 min €295 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Private tour

The most complete private formula in the selection, at €295 per adult on a two-person basis. It lasts 7 hours 15 minutes and combines the city of Ephesus with the House of the Virgin Mary. Entrances to the site, the house and the experience museum are included, along with parking, an air-conditioned vehicle, lunch and a licensed local guide. Departure is from Selçuk, near the Basilica of St John, where the office comes to meet you, or from the Kuşadası seafront. I choose it when continuity matters more than price: a day with no ticket to buy.

4. Shared group tour with lunch

Rating 4.92 (380 reviews) 7 hours €108 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

A group format: €108 per adult on a two-person basis, for seven hours on site. The vehicle is air-conditioned. Entrances to the site and to the House of the Virgin Mary are included, as is lunch. For someone discovering the site, it is an overview with nothing to organise, with a 4.92 rating out of 5 from 380 reviews. On the other side, the order of visits and the pace are set by the operator, and the listing does not mention a guide among its inclusions. The meeting point is not specified and is confirmed when booking. Choose it if you accept the group’s pace in exchange for a lower price than the private formulas with lunch.

5. Tailor-made private tour with skip-the-line

Rating 4.89 (175 reviews) 6 to 8 hours €67.97 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation Private tour

A tailor-made private formula at €67.97 per adult on a two-person basis. The listing includes a local lunch, and skip-the-line is guaranteed for a visit of 6 to 8 hours by private van with driver. Two points need your attention. First, entrance tickets to Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary are not included: they are paid on top. Second, the listing targets cruise passengers: the pickup is worded for guests of the ship, from Kuşadası. If you are not on a cruise, ask before booking whether a pickup from your accommodation is possible. I keep it for a private formula at a measured price, not because it is reserved for cruise passengers. Confirm the meeting point when booking.

6. Private tour, history only, no shopping stops

Rating 4.88 (64 reviews) 3 hours €97.50 per adult (base 2 people) Private tour

A three-hour visit focused on history, with no stops at shops. For anyone who wants to see the ancient city without giving it a full day, it is a direct option. The licensed English-speaking guide gives the historical thread, and the meeting point is at the south entrance of the site, at the upper gate, near the orange sign, beside the ticket office or the car park. Two precautions. Confirmation is manual and not instant: allow a margin before you leave. Next, entrance tickets must be confirmed with the operator: the listing puts the ancient city of Ephesus among the inclusions and also among the exclusions, with different wording. Before paying, ask the operator to confirm in writing whether the ticket is included; if not, add it to your budget.

7. Pamukkale and Hierapolis from Selçuk

Rating 4.86 (248 reviews) 11 hours €99 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

This excursion leaves Ephesus, and that is its point. If you are staying in Selçuk and want a second day, the travertine terraces of Pamukkale and the ancient city of Hierapolis, UNESCO sites since 1988, can be visited in a single day. At €99 per adult on a two-person basis, the formula includes the air-conditioned vehicle, lunch and entrances to both sites. The Cleopatra pool and the Roman bath are charged separately, 33 TL according to the listing. The day lasts 11 hours, which is long: the listing is not private, and the pace follows the group. The meeting point is an office near the Basilica of St John, in Selçuk, or pickup at the hotel. Choose it to complete Ephesus, not to replace it.

  • Travertine terraces of Pamukkale and the ancient city of Hierapolis
  • Lunch and entrances to both sites included
  • Cleopatra pool and Roman bath: tickets separate

8. Small-group day tour from Selçuk

Rating 4.74 (46 reviews) 8 hours €155 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

The most structured small-group format: an air-conditioned minibus and a professional guide, leaving from Selçuk. At €155 per adult on a two-person basis, the eight-hour day includes lunch, plus taxes and handling fees. The rating, 4.74 out of 5 from 46 reviews, is the lowest in the selection. The number of reviews is small, and should be read as such. The listing does not name entrance tickets among the inclusions, which is a reason to ask the operator before booking. Pickup is from a hotel in Selçuk, to be confirmed. I keep it for anyone who wants a structured format with lunch included, accepting a higher price than the cheapest private formulas.

Practical tips on site

Getting from Selçuk to the site

The simplest option is walking: about 3 km, or 20 to 25 minutes along the access road, according to the consistent sources. Dolmuş, local minibuses, also serve the site. They are handy for the return after a long day, but their timetables change: ask at your accommodation on the day. In summer, leave early or in the late afternoon, when the heat drops and the crowds thin out.

Opening hours and tickets: what this article does not publish

We do not show opening hours as fact, nor any entrance ticket price for the site. The third-party sites we consulted give summer and winter hours and fees that do not agree with one another, and the official site could not be checked for this article. Before you go, check the official source, the Turkish museums and sites portal (muze.gov.tr), and ask your operator which entrance ticket it plans. For your choice, what matters is what your formula includes, because tickets are not always included.

Private or group: how to choose

Five of the eight products are private. At Ephesus, private means you set the pace, the order of the sites and the timing, whereas a group sets all of that for you. The format alone does not decide the price: the cheapest private visit is €44.41 per person, the cheapest group tour is €99, and the most complete private formula is €295 per adult. Your choice therefore depends on your budget and on how much you enjoy a shared pace. A group of 15 or 20 people imposes the same tempo on everyone. For two people, compare totals on a two-adult basis, the only basis we show.

Avoiding the cruise crowds

Kuşadası receives large ships, and groups mostly arrive between 9:30 and 11:30, which packs the entrance and the viewpoints. The sources observe a calmer flow before 9:30 and after 4 p.m. A private tour lets you choose that window; a group excursion decides it for you. Formula 5 is designed for cruise passengers: the pickup time then depends on the ship, and it must be confirmed before you leave.

Seasons

April to May and late September to October are the recommended windows: the heat is more bearable and crowds are lower. July and August are very hot in the middle of the day. The availability checked here covers winter, from November 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027: it shows that places exist, not the level of crowding in summer.

Read the inclusions before paying

Cards 2 and 5 do not include entrance tickets. For card 6, tickets must be confirmed with the operator: the listing puts the ancient city of Ephesus among the inclusions and also among the exclusions. Card 1 excludes lunch, according to the listing. For drinks and tips, card 8 states « drinks and tips not included », and card 4 excludes drinks at lunch. For the other formulas, ask in writing. Also ask in writing what is included before you confirm payment.

Budget for two people

On a two-adult basis, the range runs from €89 to €590 for two adults (€44.41 per person for the cheapest private visit, €295 per person for the most complete private formula). On top of that, depending on the formula, come entrance tickets, lunch when it is not included (paid separately for the biblical tour, according to the listing), tips and, for Pamukkale, the Cleopatra pool and the Roman bath, charged separately (33 TL according to the listing). These are separate items: do not add them to the Viator prices without checking them first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking the cruise formula without confirming the pickup (card 5).
  • Counting the ticket in the price when it is not included (cards 2 and 5), or without having it confirmed for card 6.
  • Choosing the Pamukkale excursion without planning a full day on the road and on site (card 7).
  • Not leaving a margin for manual confirmation (card 6).
  • Choosing the cheapest formula without checking the duration: the history-only visit lasts three hours, the full days last seven to eleven hours (cards 3, 4, 7 and 8).

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to visit Ephesus from Selçuk?

The tours in this selection range from three hours (private visit focused on history) to eleven hours (Pamukkale excursion). Full days run from 7 hours (card 4) to 11 hours (card 7, Pamukkale), and the private formula with lunch lasts 7 hours 15 minutes (card 3). For a first visit, a tour of 4 to 6 hours (cards 1 and 2) gives an idea of the site; a full day also leaves time for the House of the Virgin Mary and lunch. Check the duration in the listing before booking, as it depends on the pace of the group or the guide.

Can you walk to Ephesus from Selçuk?

Yes. The site is about 3 km from Selçuk, and the consistent sources give 20 to 25 minutes on foot along the access road. Dolmuş also connect the town to the site. Their timetables change and are not listed here: check them on site on the day. In July and August, the midday heat makes walking hard; leave early in the morning.

Is a guided tour necessary at Ephesus?

It is not compulsory, but the site is easier to understand with a guide, who links the ruins to their history. All the private tours in the selection include an English-speaking or licensed guide, and so does the small-group excursion. The shared group tour with lunch and the Pamukkale excursion do not mention a guide among their inclusions: ask before booking.

How much does a visit to Ephesus from Selçuk cost?

Prices checked on the Viator API range from €44.41 to €295 per adult on a two-person basis, for the period from November 5, 2026 to January 3, 2027. They do not always include the site entrance ticket, which this article does not price: third-party sources contradict each other, and the official fee should be checked on the official Turkish museums and sites portal. Each card states what is included.

What is the best season to visit Ephesus?

The guides consulted recommend April to May and late September to October: the heat is more bearable and crowds are lighter. July and August are very hot in the middle of the day. Cruise groups mostly arrive at Kuşadası between 9:30 and 11:30 and pack the entrance and the viewpoints. An early start or an afternoon visit helps you avoid that wave.

Can you visit the House of the Virgin Mary from Selçuk, and are the terrace houses included?

Yes. The house is on Mount Koressos, about 7 km from Ephesus. It is included in the biblical tour (entrance fees included, card 1), in the shared group tour with lunch (card 4) and in the private formula with lunch (card 3). The private tour at €44.41 (card 2) and the tailor-made tour (card 5) exclude it: their entrance tickets are not included. As for the terrace houses, it depends on the listing: cards 4 and 6 exclude them from the price, and card 3 covers them in its entrance fees. The other listings do not mention them; ask the operator whether this ticket is included, and add it to your budget if it is not.
