Vigo’s city council has not yet set the 2026 switch-on date: it has only announced lights going on « in November ». The 2025 edition switched on on Saturday 15 November at 8:00 pm in Porta do Sol, and the lights stayed on until Sunday 11 January 2026. The exact date will only be known once the Concello de Vigo announces it.

Checked on against the official sources cited in this article.

Vigo lights up its city centre from November to January. This guide separates what the council has announced from what is still pending, gives the benchmarks from the 2025-2026 season, and helps you plan a weekend on the spot without relying on a date the Concello has not yet published. The figures the council has announced for 2026-2027 are in section 4; the switch-on date itself has not been announced.

1. When do the lights switch on in 2026?

The council started installing the lighting on 29 July 2026, in Porta do Sol. The mayor announced a switch-on « in November », without a set day, and spoke of the « best-kept secret » of this edition (El Español Treintayseis, 29 July 2026). An agenda updated on 20 October 2026 still says the Concello has not announced the date (OcioVigo). An outdated agenda listing, which repeats the previous edition, gives no confirmed date for 2026 (Paxinas Galegas).

Keep two things in mind. First, the switch-on is expected in November, but no day had been officially set when this guide was written. Second, the previous edition is the benchmark: it switched on on Saturday 15 November 2025 at 8:00 pm in Porta do Sol, and the season ended on Sunday 11 January 2026.

Porta do Sol: the starting point

Free November to January City centre Switch-on in the evening

Porta do Sol hosts the switch-on ceremony and the season’s large tree. In 2025, the switch-on took place on Saturday 15 November at 8:00 pm on this square (VigoPeques, 2025 edition). Guides and agendas repeat this date, but it only applies to 2025 until the council publishes the 2026 one.

Highlights

  • The site of the switch-on ceremony and the large tree
  • A starting point for the whole walk around the centre
  • Free: the tree and the street lights
Pixidia tip: if you arrive during the day, book your accommodation without relying on a switch-on date. The council has not yet confirmed the 2026 day, and a night booked for one specific evening can end up on the wrong one.

This tour has nothing to do with the lights: it is a historical and cultural walk around the centre. It can suit you if you arrive during the day. If you want it before dusk, check the departure time on the product page. Its price and available dates are also on that page: this guide does not repeat them, and you do not need the switch-on date to book.

The table below lists the known editions. The 2026 column is deliberately vague: until the council announces the date, no precise value should appear in it.

2. Hours: what to know before you head out

Most guides you will read give hours from the 2025-2026 season. During that season, the lights came on every day at 6:00 pm and went off at 1:00 am from Sunday to Wednesday, at 4:00 am from Thursday to Saturday, and on the eve of public holidays (DoYouSpain, VigoPeques). The nights of 23, 24, 25, 30 and 31 December, and of 1, 5 and 6 January, were lit all night. Another source gives 6:30 pm to 12:30 am for Porta do Sol in 2025: the sources we checked do not settle which is right.

These are not the 2026 hours. In an update of 20 October 2026, OcioVigo announces different times for the coming season: lights off at midnight on weekdays and at 2:00 am at weekends. The council has not confirmed this, and it contradicts the hours published for 2025-2026. If a late night out matters to you, check the switch-off time on the day, through the Concello de Vigo’s channels or with the tourist office.

Weekends in December are the busiest, according to visitors’ accounts and local press, with packed streets in the evening. If you have the choice, a weekday early in the afternoon is the option DoYouSpain suggests.

3. The evening of the switch-on, step by step

The ceremony takes place in Porta do Sol, but the whole evening revolves around that point. The benchmarks below come from the 2025 edition (VigoPeques). They stay valid until the council publishes the 2026 programme.

  • Arrive before 6:30 pm. The 2025 advice is to be on site before the ceremony starts, since space around Porta do Sol is limited.
  • Watch from another spot if the square is full. In 2025, screens showed the switch-on at Vialia, at Policarpo Sanz and near the Marco.
  • Plan for traffic. In 2025, the streets of the central area were closed to traffic and parking on the evening of the switch-on. Park before the centre rather than circling the square.
  • Note where help is. First-aid posts and ambulances were scheduled for the busiest evenings under the 2025 arrangements.

An undated visitor’s account describes a city full of queues, traffic jams and crowded streets, including on the day of the switch-on. The same account advises coming very early in the morning, when it says the city is calmer, and returning in the evening for the lights.

4. Where to see the lights in Vigo

Vigo is not seen from a single point. The lights are spread across the city centre, and guides tie them to a few key places. Two areas stand out: the heart around Porta do Sol and Gran Vía, and the Vialia station district, where the ice rink opened in 2025 and where several moves are announced for 2026.

For 2026-2027, the council announces a large installation: more than 12 million LEDs, about 500 streets, about 7,000 decorative motifs, 2,700 illuminated trees and 1,500 light arches (El Español Treintayseis, 29 July 2026, citing the council). These figures have not been independently verified, and the number of streets has varied between editions and sources.

Gran Vía and Príncipe street: a walk on foot

Free Walk on foot November to January Evening

Guides cite Gran Vía for its illuminated trees, and Príncipe street for its garlands strung one after another (DoYouSpain). Both can be walked in the city centre. An 18-metre giant gift box is announced for Gran Vía in 2026: it comes from the OcioVigo agenda, is not confirmed by the council, and should be checked on the spot.

Highlights

  • Porta do Sol: starting point and switch-on ceremony
  • Gran Vía: illuminated trees, cited by guides for the 2025 edition
  • Príncipe street: shops and garlands strung in a row
Pixidia tip: do this walk at nightfall, then come back along Príncipe street if you want the shop windows lit up. For photos without crowds, one travel blog suggests arriving early, while the streets are still quiet.

Vialia: ice rink, market and announced ferris wheel

Paid activities Half a day Outdoor car park Afternoon and evening

The Vialia station has hosted the Vialia on Ice rink since 2025, its first edition. In 2025, the ferris wheel stood between calle Colón and calle Concepción Arenal (Festivales de España). A licence application published on 12 October 2026, and an announcement relayed on 20 October, point to its installation in the Vialia car park. No official source consulted confirms this so far.

Highlights

  • Vialia on Ice: the rink in the Vialia shopping centre (2025 price not verified)
  • Vialia outdoor car park: around €1.60 an hour in the 2025 edition
  • Samil ice rink: on the beach, about 6 km from the centre
Pixidia tip: if the ferris wheel is part of your plans, keep a backup. Its location is not confirmed, and the licence application is reported with no known decision as of writing.

Markets and attractions change location and format from one edition to the next. The table below covers the 2025 edition and shows what is announced for 2026. Hours and prices from 2025 do not apply to the next season.

5. Transport, prices and budget

Two points matter for the weekend. The train from Santiago de Compostela takes roughly 1 h 07 to 1 h 30, according to an unsourced estimate from travel aggregators (not named). Renfe was not consulted for this guide, so check December timetables before you book. Between Vigo and Pontevedra, the journey time has not been verified either: some excursions combine the two cities, but their listings give no switch-on date for Pontevedra in 2026.

Your budget mostly depends on your pace. The lights, the streets of the centre, the Porta do Sol tree and the nativity scene at Casa das Artes, which was free in 2025, cost nothing. The paid options are the tourist train, the Nadalbus bus, skating, the ferris wheel and guided tours. The Nadalbus is booked online with PassVigo, on the Woutick platform; the tourist train is bought at the ticket office in the station. For the 2026 ferris wheel and ice rink, no price has been verified. The table below lists the prices quoted by sources, with the date of each source.

Source: DoYouSpain, Vigoe.es (search excerpt, page not opened when writing), VigoPeques; DoYouSpain and VigoPeques checked on 23 October 2026. The train and Nadalbus prices are undated: check them before you leave.

These amounts are not a firm budget, since the prices are undated. For two adults, the tourist train (2 × €6) and the Nadalbus (2 × €5 with PassVigo, 2 × €7 otherwise) add up to between €22 and €26. If you come by car, add about €1.60 an hour for parking at the Vialia car park (2025 figure). For a guided activity in the centre, the walking tour in section 1 has no verified price in this guide: its price is on the product page.

6. A typical weekend, by traveller type

No 2026 programme had been published when we checked. The plan below uses the places and hours from 2025: adjust it as soon as the council publishes its dates. The AEMET forecasts (Spain’s national weather agency) were not checked when this was written: look at them before choosing between the city and the beach.

Friday. Arrive late morning, drop your bags, then head to the Bouzas market if it is open (15 chalets in 2025, mostly food). Have dinner in the centre and take a first stroll to Porta do Sol late in the evening.

Saturday. In the morning, an undated account describes a quieter city: a window worth testing for the walking tour. In the afternoon, Samil beach or a trip to the Cíes Islands, depending on the weather that day. In the evening, return to the centre for the street lights and, if the date is confirmed, for the switch-on ceremony.

Sunday. The Cíes Market in the morning or at midday, if the site is open: in 2025 it welcomed visitors until 11:30 pm on Sundays. Take the tourist train in the afternoon if you want an overview of the city, then leave in late afternoon, leaving a margin for the return journey.

By profile

  • Families. Keep the tourist train and the ice rink for the afternoon, and budget for them. Save Porta do Sol for the end of the day, when the lights come on (6:00 pm in 2025-2026).
  • Couples. The Gran Vía walk at dusk, then dinner in the centre. For a different mood, book a guided tour in the morning.
  • Tight budget. The lights are free. Limit paid activities to one, and stay outside the centre if you drive: DoYouSpain notes that hotels outside the centre are often cheaper, with a car recommended.
  • First visit. Start with the centre on foot during the day, then return to Porta do Sol at nightfall.

To compare with another lit-up city, read our guide to the Lisbon Christmas lights and markets. If you are looking for another market programme, our Colmar Christmas market guide covers the dates and how to get there from France.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a night on a set date before the official announcement. If the switch-on falls on another day, you miss the evening everyone is waiting for.
  • Taking a night-time hour from a guide as the season’s hour. Always check which edition the source describes.
  • Parking in the centre on switch-on evening. In 2025, the central streets were closed to parking.
  • Counting on a specific spot for the ferris wheel or the Cíes Market. Both are announced elsewhere for 2026, without confirmation.

What other guides don’t tell you

Several guides give dates and hours as if they were settled. The official Concello website (vigo.org) could not be reached when we checked, so the points below rely on dated reports, press and agendas, not on the council’s own source.

  • The 2026 switch-on date is not published. Guides talk about « mid-November » without an official source. The council has only announced a switch-on « in November », on 29 July 2026 (El Español Treintayseis, checked on 23 October 2026).
  • Hours change from one edition to the next. Guides repeat the switch-off times of the 2025-2026 season. An agenda updated on 20 October 2026 announces different times for the next season (OcioVigo, checked on 23 October 2026), not confirmed by the council.
  • The ferris wheel may move. Its move to the Vialia car park is announced but not confirmed. A licence application dated 12 October 2026 points the same way (Marches-de-Noël.fr, checked on 23 October 2026).
  • The Cíes Market would leave the Alameda. Guides still place it on the Alameda or Praza de Compostela, based on the 2025 edition. The move to Vialia is announced without confirmation (OcioVigo, checked on 23 October 2026).
  • The Nadalbus is rarely mentioned, and its price is undated. The only figures we found, €5 with PassVigo and €7 otherwise, come from an undated Vigoe.es article whose page was not opened when writing. Check them before using them in a budget.

Frequently asked questions

When do the Luces de Navidad in Vigo switch on in 2026?

The council has not yet announced the 2026 switch-on day. It talks about a switch-on « in November », announced on 29 July 2026. In 2025, the switch-on took place on Saturday 15 November at 8:00 pm in Porta do Sol. Check the Concello de Vigo’s announcements before you book.

Until when do the lights stay on?

The 2025-2026 season ended on Sunday 11 January 2026. The end of the 2026-2027 season has not been published. For a late-December trip, leave a margin of a few days.

What time do the lights switch off?

In the 2025-2026 season, the lights switched off at 1:00 am from Sunday to Wednesday and at 4:00 am from Thursday to Saturday. The nights of 23, 24, 25, 30 and 31 December, and of 1, 5 and 6 January, were lit all night (DoYouSpain, VigoPeques). An agenda from 20 October 2026 announces midnight on weekdays and 2:00 am at weekends, without confirmation from the council. Check the time on the day before a late outing.

Are the Vigo Christmas lights free?

Yes for the streets, the Porta do Sol tree and the nativity scene at Casa das Artes, which was free in 2025. The tourist train, the Nadalbus bus, skating and the ferris wheel are paid. The train and Nadalbus prices are undated, and no 2026 ferris wheel price has been verified.

Where can I park in Vigo during the Christmas period?

Several car parks in the centre, including Vialia, offered one hour free with a purchase according to 2025 reports. The outdoor Vialia car park cost about €1.60 an hour. On the evening of the 2025 switch-on, the central streets were closed to parking: park before the centre (VigoPeques, 2025 edition).

Can you combine Vigo and Pontevedra in one day?

Some excursions combine the two cities, but the journey time has not been verified for this guide. Pontevedra switches on later: the Deputación on 29 November 2025, then the city council on 5 December 2025 (Planomato, 2025 edition, page not opened when writing). The 2026 dates had not been published at the time of checking.

Is there an ice rink in Vigo?

Yes. Vialia on Ice, at Vialia station, opened in 2025 for its first edition. The Samil ice rink, on the beach about 6 km from the centre, was open from late November to early February during the 2025-2026 season. The 2026 locations are not confirmed.

Are the lights accessible by wheelchair?

No reliable information has been found on the accessibility of the streets, paving, slopes or quays. Two commercial listings, not opened when writing, cover the topic: one says a guided walking tour is wheelchair accessible, to be flagged at booking; the other advises wheelchair users against a bus-and-boat tour departing from Santiago de Compostela. Before you go, contact the Concello de Vigo or the tourist office to check the route.

Is it better to visit on a weekday or at the weekend?

Weekends are busier, and visitors describe very crowded streets in December. DoYouSpain suggests weekday afternoons. If you can only come at the weekend, visit the city in the morning, when the streets are quieter (undated account), then return in the evening for the lights.
