The historic Rathausmarkt market opens on Monday 23 November 2026 at 11 am and closes on Wednesday 23 December 2026. Opening hours are 11 am to 9 pm, every day. The flying Father Christmas passes over the square at 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm. The Stadthöfe markets open from 12 November.
Checked on against the official sources cited (hamburg.de, hamburg-tourism.de).
Hamburg doesn’t have one Christmas market, but a constellation of markets spread across the centre, the Alster shores, the Speicherstadt and HafenCity. The best known is the Rathausmarkt, on the square in front of the town hall, which hosts the flying Father Christmas and the parade. This guide starts with the three questions we get most often: which dates, which times and how to get there. Of the ten markets listed, two are confirmed by the city (Rathausmarkt, Stadthöfe), one by its festival (Gänsemarkt), and the other seven are estimates or figures taken from travel aggregators. It ends with a one-day itinerary.
1. The Rathausmarkt, the reference market

Historic Christmas market on the Rathausmarkt
The market fills the square in front of the town hall (Rathausmarkt, 20095 Hamburg). Its look follows the old-style Christmas markets: craft stalls (blown glass, ceramics, wooden toys), a vintage carousel and a “toy alley”. Listings link it to the Roncalli circus. According to hamburg.de, opening hours are 11 am to 9 pm, every day of the season. For more on the square itself, our dedicated page on the Rathausmarkt market goes deeper.
Highlights
- Opens Monday 23 November 2026 at 11 am, closes Wednesday 23 December (hamburg.de and hamburg-tourism.de).
- Father Christmas flies over the square at 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm, every day.
- Christmas parade on the four Saturdays of Advent, at 2 pm and 5 pm, along Mönckebergstraße. The exact dates are not published.
For a break from the stalls, this walking food tour lasts 3 hours 30 and includes seven local dishes. The Viator listing checked on 23 October 2026 shows departures on all 31 days of the market window, for example at 11 am and 1 pm on Tuesday 24 November. The API shows no sold-out indicator, so check the time slot before you go.
2. The other markets: Stadthöfe, Gänsemarkt, Jungfernstieg and HafenCity
Hamburg has around fifteen markets according to listings, but how far each one is confirmed varies a lot. Only the Rathausmarkt and the Stadthöfe are confirmed by the city. The Gänsemarkt has dates and hours in a festival listing, and the rest are estimates or aggregator listings. The table below separates what is confirmed for 2026 from what is still an estimate or an aggregator figure. To compare with other German and European cities, the guide to Christmas markets in Europe 2026 gives the wider picture.

Stadthöfe: the calmest market, near the station
The Stadthöfe market sits in the courtyard of the Bleichenhof. Along with the Rathausmarkt, it is the only one whose 2026 dates and hours come directly from the city’s tourist office. It opens on 12 November and closes on 23 December, Tuesday to Sunday from 12 pm to 10 pm, and Monday from 3 pm. Entry is free. Smaller than the Rathausmarkt, it suits a late-afternoon visit without the crowds.
Gänsemarkt and Winterwald: two options close to the centre
The Gänsemarkt runs from 18 November to 23 December 2026, 11 am to 9 pm, with food served until 11 pm. Entry is free, but food and purchases are paid. The Winterwald, on Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz in the pedestrian centre, takes the idea of a winter forest with real fir trees. Its dates, 18 November to 23 December, come from hamburg-travel.com, and it closes on Christmas Day.

Weißer Zauber, on Jungfernstieg
The Jungfernstieg market is the most photogenic in the city: white tents lit in gold and a floating fir tree on the Binnenalster, a few steps from the town hall. Start dates vary between sources, somewhere between 16 and 19 November, so don’t fix a single day until you have checked the organiser’s site. The historic big wheel that goes with it is worth a look, but its construction date varies between sources.
Highlights
- A view over the Alster, best seen at dusk.
- A few minutes’ walk from the Rathausmarkt, along the same axis.
- Direct access from Jungfernstieg station (U1, U2, S1, S2 and S3).
St. Petri, Spitalerstraße and HafenCity: markets still to confirm
The St. Petri market promotes more than two hundred real fir trees. Its 2026 dates are still an estimate, because the city website did not yet publish them on the day we checked. Spitalerstraße, between the central station and the town hall, runs until 27 December according to listings, which helps if you stay between Christmas and New Year. The HafenCity harbour market is listed until 30 December based on an aggregator forecast, with a heated lounge for rainy days.
Santa Pauli: the market for adults
On Spielbudenplatz, in the heart of the Reeperbahn, the Santa Pauli market is listed from 9 November by hamburg-travel.com (an aggregator, not confirmed by the city), with hours that run late into the night. Guides describe it as a market for adults, with concerts and burlesque shows. That label comes from the organisers and guides, not from an official rule.
3. Father Christmas flying and the parade
The flight of Father Christmas is the most talked-about moment of the market. Every day at 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm, he flies over the square in his sleigh, according to hamburg.de (checked 23 October 2026). The times are fixed, so the flight is predictable. One travel blog suggests standing near the central aisle at about 3:50 pm, a tip no official source confirms. Our own suggestion to arrive around 3:30 pm is not verified either.
The Christmas parade (Weihnachtsparade) goes along Mönckebergstraße on the four Saturdays of Advent, at 2 pm and 5 pm. hamburg.de gives these times but does not publish the dates, so check the city’s site before you fix a day. Don’t look for the parade on a Sunday: it takes place on Saturdays.
4. Getting there, transport and budget
From the central station (Hauptbahnhof), the Rathausmarkt is about a ten-minute walk (undated source, check on a map). The U3 line also serves Rathaus station, at the foot of the square, according to the official map on hamburg.de. From Jungfernstieg, the U1 and U2, as well as the S1, S2 and S3, serve the station of the same name, a few minutes’ walk from the Rathausmarkt and the Alster shore.
We have not verified a direct train from Paris or London for this article. Check the journey on the Deutsche Bahn website before you book.
A dpa news report dated 20 October 2026 announces that regional trains between Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and Harburg will be suspended for about four weeks while switches are replaced. The report does not cover December or the Rathaus: it does not say whether the line will be back before the market. If your journey goes through Harburg, check the route on the Deutsche Bahn website before you travel.

There is no 72-hour ticket: the 3-day card is the nearest option. Group prices quoted in one search summary contradict each other, so check them on the booking page before you buy.
Budget for a visit
No entry fee is listed for the markets above, so your budget goes on food and shopping. We could not check the price of mulled wine (Glühwein) for Hamburg in 2026. A national survey from 2025, quoted by the press, points to average prices of around €4.50 to €5, so treat that as a rough guide. Feuerzangenbowle, a hot drink made with flaming sugar that is not a classic mulled wine, costs €8 to €12 a cup according to an undated blog. On a tight budget, a meal on site and a walk around the centre with no shopping are the easiest costs to control.
5. When to go: weather and the best time
December in Hamburg is cold and damp. Averages from wetter.de give a low of 0.8 °C and a high of 4.5 °C, with 72 mm of rain on average. These figures do not come from the German weather service (DWD) normals, so treat them as a rough guide. The site beste-reisezeit.org, which cites DWD data for 1991-2020, puts sunshine at about one and a half hours a day in December.
Night falls around 4 pm in December, and the lights become the main backdrop from late afternoon. One guide notes that it rains far more often than it snows, so pack a waterproof coat and shoes that cope with damp.
For the best moment, guides recommend weekdays, late afternoon, between 4 pm and 6 pm. The Saturdays of Advent, with the parade, are the busiest days.
6. A one-day itinerary
Here is a plan for a Tuesday from 24 November 2026, the day after the Rathausmarkt opens on 23 November. The Stadthöfe open at 12 pm that day. Adjust it if you arrive on another day, especially a Monday, when the Stadthöfe only open from 3 pm.
- 11 am: arrive at the central station, then walk about ten minutes to the Rathausmarkt.
- 11:30 am to 2 pm: Rathausmarkt. Work your way round the stalls before the afternoon crowds, then have lunch on site.
- 2 pm to 3:30 pm: Jungfernstieg and Binnenalster. The Weißer Zauber market and the floating fir tree are a few minutes’ walk away.
- 3:30 pm: head back to the Rathausmarkt. Find a spot near the central aisle for the 4 pm flight of Father Christmas.
- 4 pm: Father Christmas flies over, then a break somewhere warm.
- 5:30 pm to 7 pm: Stadthöfe. The market is open until 10 pm on Tuesday, which leaves time to wander as the light fades.
- 7:30 pm onwards: dinner in the centre, then back to your hotel.
The whole route is a half-day on foot, not counting breaks. To plan your stay around the German Christmas school holidays, the guide to Christmas holidays 2026-2027 by German state gives the context.
7. Which option suits you
- Families. The Rathausmarkt is the obvious choice: carousel, Father Christmas and activities. Avoid Saturday afternoons if you want to move around with a pushchair, as the parade and weekends are the busiest times. No source we checked documents pushchair access on the square.
- Couples. The Jungfernstieg in the evening, then the Stadthöfe on a weekday, make for a calmer night than the centre on a Saturday.
- On a budget. No entry fee is listed for the markets above, and the spending goes on food. A visit to the Rathausmarkt is often enough for the main experience.
- First-timers. The Rathausmarkt, Father Christmas at 4 pm and the parade (on Saturdays) make the classic trio. Start at the Rathausmarkt before exploring the other markets.
- An adult crowd. Santa Pauli is listed from 9 November (aggregator, not confirmed by the city), with late programming. It is a night market for visitors who want that atmosphere.
- Reduced mobility. No source we checked describes access at the Rathausmarkt. Articles about other German markets mention cobbles, steps and counters set too high, but nothing confirms this for Hamburg, so contact the organiser before you visit.
8. Mistakes to avoid
- Working from an old date. Several guides give 25 November as the opening of the Rathausmarkt. The official date is Monday 23 November 2026.
- Assuming every market opens on 24 December. No source we checked gives 24 December as an opening day, and the Rathausmarkt closes on 23 December. For HafenCity, the 2025/26 season was closed on 23 November, 24 and 25 December (hamburg.de search snippet, to be reconfirmed for 2026). Check each market before you plan a last-day visit.
- Looking for the parade on a Sunday. It takes place on the Saturdays of Advent, and its exact dates are not published.
- Choosing the wrong Hamburg Card. The one-day card at €11.90 covers a single day. Compare it with the two- or three-day card, depending on how many journeys and museums you plan.
- Forgetting Totensonntag. This German day of remembrance for the dead (not Remembrance Sunday) falls on 22 November 2026, and some markets may not open that day. The Rathausmarkt opens the following Monday.
- Counting on an umbrella. In December it rains more often than it snows. A waterproof coat is more useful.
9. What other guides don’t tell you
Many guides reuse old calendars or leave out practical details. Here are the points we checked against official sources and organisers, with the date we looked at them.
- The Rathausmarkt opens on 23 November 2026, not the 25th. The city’s pages give Monday 23 November at 11 am for the opening and Wednesday 23 December for the closing (hamburg.de, checked 23 October 2026).
- The parade has times, but no dates yet. hamburg.de gives 2 pm and 5 pm on the four Saturdays of Advent, without publishing the dates. Most guides leave out these times (hamburg.de, checked 23 October 2026).
- The Stadthöfe have detailed hours for 2026. Tuesday to Sunday from 12 pm to 10 pm, and from 3 pm on Monday, from 12 November to 23 December. Guides don’t give these hours (hamburg-tourism.de, seen in a search snippet on 23 October 2026).
- The Hamburg Card costs €11.90 for one day. Older guides quote €10.50, an outdated price (hamburg-travel.com, undated page, checked 23 October 2026).
- One festival listing gets the Totensonntag date wrong. It shows the Fleetinsel closing on 23 November 2026. But Totensonntag falls on 22 November, since the first Sunday of Advent is 29 November (calendar calculation). Don’t use that closing date (festivalsindeutschland.de, checked 23 October 2026).

Yes. In December, Hamburg gets about 72 mm of rain on average according to wetter.de, with an average low of 0.8 °C and a high of 4.5 °C. These figures are not the German weather service normals. It rains more often than it snows, so a waterproof coat is more useful than an umbrella.
