Stuttgart’s 2026 Christmas market runs from 25 November to 23 December, 29 days in all. It opens at 11 am every day and closes at 9 pm, or 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. On the opening day, the stalls open at 5 pm and the opening ceremony is at 6 pm. Entry is free.

Checked on against the official sources cited (stuttgarter-weihnachtsmarkt.de, stuttgart-tourist.de).

Stuttgart’s Christmas market claims more than three centuries of history, and it takes over the city centre for almost a month. For 2026, the dates, opening hours and free entry are confirmed by the organiser and by the tourist office. This guide gives the exact hours, although several websites list wrong ones. It also covers what still costs money, how to get there without a car, and what has not yet been confirmed for this edition.

Dates and opening hours for 2026

The market runs from Wednesday 25 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026. The hours below come from the organiser’s official page, checked on 23 October 2026. The market opens at 11 am every day, not at 10 am as several travel guides claim. We come back to this gap in the section on what other guides leave out.

The market closes on 23 December. No opening on 24 or 25 December has been announced. The first day needs a choice: the stalls open at 5 pm, but the opening ceremony is at 6 pm in the courtyard of the Old Castle (Vieux Château), in the presence of the mayor, Frank Nopper. Arriving around 5 pm gives you time to walk the first stalls before the speech.

According to reviews and blogs, the market is more pleasant on weekdays and in the morning, and much busier at weekends and in the evening. If you can choose your days, pick a weekday.

How long should you allow? Our advice, with no figure from a source: one weekday is enough for the essentials. At weekends, reviews describe a very busy market, so leave time to move between the squares.

The market at a glance: history, size and spaces

The first documented mention of the market dates from 1692. The organiser also points to a privilege granted by Duke Ulrich in 1507, on which the tradition, claimed to be more than 300 years old, is based. These dates come from the history page of the official website.

In size, the 2025 edition drew around 3.5 million visitors over 28 opening days, according to the organiser’s figures as reported by the local press. The number of stalls is not fixed from one source to another: the organiser speaks of about 250, and the French-language page of the tourist office of about 300. We therefore write « between 250 and 300 stalls », as no official count has been published for 2026.

The market is not on a single square. It spreads over the Marktplatz, the Schlossplatz, the Schillerplatz, the Karlsplatz and the courtyard of the Old Castle. A children’s area, the Kinder-Märchenland, is listed on the official website. Stages host evening concerts, and fairground rides complete the offer. Think of it as a set of squares linked together in the city centre.

The market is best discovered on foot. Its spaces are linked together in the city centre, and a short walk takes you from one to the next. An organised walking tour is offered on Viator: the product page gives the time slots and the price for the date you choose.

Budget: what is free and what is not

The market is laid out in wooden chalets across several squares. One area that two sources call « Scandinavian » is mentioned, with no stall details for 2026. A children’s area, the Kinder-Märchenland, is on the official website. The mulled wine variants listed by tourist sources are below.

The specialities listed by tourist sources

  • Schupfnudeln with cabbage
  • Maultaschen
  • Hutzelbrot and Springerle
  • Gebrannte Mandeln

Getting there and getting around without a car

The organiser and the tourist office recommend public transport. The market is served by tram and underground (U-Bahn). The two most useful access points are the Hauptbahnhof (central station) and the Stadtmitte stop, about five minutes’ walk from the market.

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month since 1 January 2026. It is valid for one calendar month on regional trains and local transport, but not on long-distance trains such as the ICE or the TGV. For a single day, compare with a regional day ticket, whose price was not checked for this article.

By car, the city announced for 2025 that Marktstraße and Eberhardstraße would be closed from 11 am to midnight during the market. These arrangements are expected to be repeated, but they are not confirmed for 2026. Parking prices were not checked: do not count on a city-centre car park without checking the price first.

The 1:15 pm organ concert

The organ concert takes place every day from 30 November to 22 December 2026, at 1:15 pm according to the city’s listing, and lasts about 30 minutes. It is held Monday to Saturday in the Stiftskirche, and on Sunday in the Schlosskirche, on the Königin-Katharina organ. It is organised by Stiftsmusik Stuttgart, not by the city: the official city listing makes this clear. Entry costs €4 to €5, with reduced rates.

It is a useful midday break before heading back to the market late in the afternoon. The programme is published as it goes, shortly before each concert: check the city’s listing on the day.

What’s new in 2026: what is not confirmed

We found no official news for the 2026 edition on the pages checked on 23 October 2026. Several official PDFs from 2025 and the concerts page were unreadable. Several items circulate on aggregator sites or in the press. We do not present them as settled.

  • The ferris wheel (Riesenrad). It turned in 2025, from 20 November 2025 to 6 January 2026, for €8 for an adult. Its return in 2026 and its prices are not confirmed (to be confirmed).
  • The Wintertraum ice rink. Installed on the Schlossplatz in 2025, with an adult rate of €15 including skates. No announcement for 2026 has been found (to be confirmed).
  • The light sculptures on the Schlossplatz. According to the local press of 17 October 2025, they will not be installed for Christmas 2025, and savings of €200,000 a year are planned for 2026 and 2027. The matter remains to be confirmed for 2026.
  • Higher stall fees. The Stuttgarter Zeitung, in an article from December 2025 that does not say which year it applies to, reports higher fees for stallholders, notably for mulled wine and waffles. This weighs on selling prices, with no 2026 figure published (to be confirmed).
  • The price of mulled wine and of the deposit in 2026. No figure is published as of the date of checking.
  • The Stuttgart 21 construction works. According to dpa on 19 November 2025, the partial opening announced for late 2026 was in question, with no final decision. If you arrive by train, check the state of the works before you leave (to be confirmed).
  • Safety in 2026. The city says its arrangements remain in place, with barriers and a stronger police presence. The articles we read, however, date from 2024 and 2025 (to be confirmed).

The rest should be checked on the organiser’s official pages before you leave.

Visiting by profile

With family. The Kinder-Märchenland, a children’s area, is listed on the official website. The fairground rides and evening concerts are paid, according to the tourist office; the ice rink was paid in 2025, according to the press. Budget for them separately. A wish tree for children ran in 2025, with letters that could be posted online from 19 November. Its return in 2026 is not confirmed.

As a couple. Blogs recommend the end of the day, after 5 pm, for the atmosphere. On weekdays the market is still pleasant at that time, while at weekends it fills up fast. The organ concert and a stroll through the old town can fill the afternoon before dinner.

On a budget. Entry is free, and you can visit without spending anything. A mulled wine, at €3.80 to €5 in 2025 depending on the stall, and the organ concert, at €4 or €5, keep the spend low. Rides and evening concerts are what pushes the bill up.

First visit. If you arrive on the first day, the 6 pm ceremony is the high point, with the mayor. Otherwise, an ideal day starts with the 1:15 pm concert, then the market in the late afternoon, when the light fades. If you book a walking tour, check its time slots on the Viator listing, then plan the market around it.

With a dog. No official rule on dogs has been found: confirm with the organiser before you go.

Reduced mobility. The paths are almost entirely paved, according to a local guide, which can make wheelchairs or pushchairs harder to manage. Disabled parking spaces are near the Schlossplatz and some nearby streets, and an adapted taxi stand (Rolli-Taxi) is listed on Dorotheenstraße in the 2025 press. No official 2026 information on accessibility is available: contact the tourist office before your visit.

A typical day at the market

This plan is based on the official opening hours. Adjust it to your arrival day and to the weather.

  1. 11 am: opening. Arrive at the central station, then walk about five minutes to the market.
  2. 1:15 pm: the organ concert. Around thirty minutes, at the Stiftskirche Monday to Saturday, and at the Schlosskirche on Sunday. A good moment to sit down before the afternoon.
  3. Afternoon: a Swabian lunch and the stalls. Share a portion of Schupfnudeln or Maultaschen, then wander the market squares at your own pace.
  4. 5 pm: end of the day. This is the time blogs recommend for the atmosphere, provided you come on a weekday if you want to avoid the crowds.
  5. Before 9 pm, or 10 pm on Friday and Saturday. One last walk past the stalls, then back to the station. Public transport is still the easiest way home.

What other guides don’t tell you

Four points, checked on official pages, are missing or wrong in the travel guides we consulted.

  • The first day has precise times. The stalls open at 5 pm on Wednesday 25 November 2026, and the opening ceremony is at 6 pm in the courtyard of the Old Castle, with mayor Frank Nopper. Guides name the place but not the time. Stuttgart tourist office (checked on 23 October 2026).
  • Free entry does not mean everything is free. Entry to the market is free, but rides and concerts are paid, according to the tourist office. Many guides stop at « free entry ». Stuttgart tourist office (checked on 23 October 2026).
  • An organ concert every day at 1:15 pm. From 30 November to 22 December 2026, in the Stiftskirche, or in the Schlosskirche on Sunday, for €4 to €5. This event does not appear in the guides we read. City of Stuttgart (checked on 23 October 2026).
