The men’s downhill on the Stelvio piste at Bormio is on Monday, December 28, 2026, with the super-G on Tuesday, December 29. The FIS 2026-27 calendar reserves the week of December 26 to 29; the start time is not yet published. The last official grandstand price, from 2024, was €39 per race in the Grandstand.

Checked on against the official sources cited (FIS 2026-27 calendar, the organizer’s technical sheet and ticketing).

Bormio is back on the Alpine Skiing World Cup calendar after a year away. The Stelvio piste, one of the steepest downhill courses on the men’s circuit, hosted no men’s race in 2025 because it was reserved for the Milano Cortina Olympics. The 2026-27 calendar puts it back on the schedule the week after Christmas. This guide separates what is confirmed (the date and the race week format), what is not yet (start times and 2026 tickets), and what to plan for the trip: driving or train access, lodging and winter conditions in the valley.

Stelvio, the Bormio downhill course

3,442 m long, according to the organizer 1,023 m vertical drop, according to the organizer 63% gradient, according to the resort December 28, 2026

The start is at 2,268 m above sea level and the finish at 1,245 m, at the edge of the village, according to the organizer’s technical sheet. The resort gives a start at 2,255 m and a length of about 3,250 m. The course landmarks, according to the resort, are the Rocca jump, the Sertorelli little canal, the Carcentina banked turn, then the wall and the San Pietro jump, where the slope reaches 50%.

Key points

  • Men’s Olympic downhill won on February 7, 2026 by Franjo von Allmen (Switzerland), in 1:51.61.
  • An upper section often in shade, considered cold and slippery: reports from the 2022 edition describe icy conditions in the shade.
  • A speed often cited above 140 km/h, with no official measurement published for 2026.
Pixidia tip: use only one set of figures, and cite its source. The organizer and the resort do not give the same dimensions, and the press often repeats one or the other without comparing.

The lesson takes place in Livigno, reached via the Foscagno pass or the Munt La Schera tunnel (detailed access below). Viator describes a one-hour private lesson, usually starting at ski lift no. 17 in the San Rocco ski area. On October 23, 2026, the listing showed only one open slot out of eight for December 28 (4 p.m.); availability can change before race week. The drive time between Bormio and Livigno was not checked.

The piste was designed in the early 1980s by Oreste Peccedi, a former coach of the Italian men’s national team. Bormio hosted the World Championships in 1985, then again in 2005, co-organized with Santa Caterina di Valfurva. According to the resort, the men’s World Cup downhill has been held there since 1993.

The last men’s World Cup downhill before 2026 took place on December 28, 2024. Alexis Monney won it, 0.24 seconds ahead of Franjo von Allmen, for his first World Cup victory, according to the Swiss press. There was no men’s downhill or super-G at Bormio in 2025: the Italian press noted in May 2025 that the piste was reserved for the Games.

The press often speaks of speeds above 140 km/h. No official measurement from 2026 has been published, so this figure is not repeated here as a measurement. The 63% gradient is the one the resort gives for the initial section; another English-language source expresses the slope in degrees (36.1°).

The calendar: race week from December 26 to 29

The FIS calendar for the 2026-27 season lists Bormio in the men’s World Cup, within the December 26 to 29 window. The provisional calendar, published in May 2026, already showed it. The Italian press of October 14, 2026 gives the exact day: downhill on Monday, December 28, and super-G on Tuesday, December 29. Two sources agree on the date, and neither publishes a start time.

The downhill start time was not published on the date of checking. Look for it on the organizer’s website as race week approaches, since it sets when you need to leave if you are coming for the race.

Bormio is not the only stop in December. Beaver Creek hosts the World Cup from December 3 to 6, Val-d’Isère on December 12 and 13 (giant slalom and slalom), then Val Gardena on December 18 and 19, according to the Italian press of October 14, 2026. For the French leg, read our guide to the World Cup in Val-d’Isère and Courchevel. If you follow several stops, plan travel times between them.

Past editions had side events: a parade of ski clubs through town, the bib draw in Piazza Cavour around 6 p.m., and the Vitalini Speed Contest, open to young skiers on the piste after the downhill. The 2026 program for these events is not published. Do not wait for it before fixing your stay.

Getting to Bormio in winter

SS38 from Milan Tirano, 2 hr 30 min from Milan Snow chains required at Foscagno

Bormio can be reached in three ways, according to the World Cup access page. The most direct route from Lombardy is the SS38, which follows the Adda valley. From Bergamo, you take the Aprica pass. By train, travel from Milan Centrale to Tirano, then take a bus to Bormio. In the valley, chains are mandatory or recommended in winter depending on the sources consulted: check the requirement on the day you travel.

Key points

  • From Milan, Lecco or Como: the SS38, through Sondrio.
  • From Bergamo: the Aprica pass, then the valley.
  • By train: Milan Centrale to Tirano, about 2 hr 30 min, then the bus.
Pixidia tip: the Stelvio pass is not an option in December. On the Bormio side, it is a summer road, closed in winter. For Livigno, use the Foscagno or the Munt La Schera tunnel.

Bus times between Tirano and Bormio during race week were not checked. For flights, the airports to consider are Bergamo Orio al Serio, the closest to Bormio, then Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate. An undated press item mentions winter shuttles from Bergamo Orio al Serio and Milan Malpensa to Livigno, Bormio, Santa Caterina and Aprica. Their 2026-27 timetables are not confirmed, and no journey time was recorded. FlixBus also runs a line between Bormio and Orio al Serio airport, with no timetable recorded: do not book a connection on this information alone.

The town of Bormio usually issues a traffic order for major events. In 2025, for the Giro d’Italia (a cycling stage, not the ski race), an order banned traffic and parking in the centre from 4 a.m. until the end of the event. We did not find the 2026 order. Check it before you drive. No 2026 parking plan has been published: parking and race-day shuttles are not known at the time of writing, and pedestrian access to the start area still needs confirmation.

Tickets and grandstands: the published prices date from 2024

The official grandstands are paid. The organizer’s ticketing for the 2024 edition listed €39 per race in the Bormio Grandstand and €80 in the Stelvio Terrace, fees extra. Children aged 0 to 2 entered free. These figures are references from another edition, not a 2026 price.

Not published as of that date: the 2026 price, the date sales open, any combined downhill and super-G offer, and tickets for the bib draw. Without a ticket, the race can be followed on television. No official source describes a free viewing area: do not build your day around a free viewpoint until you have checked.

In 2024, tickets were sold by the organizer, the Fondazione Bormio, and through TicketOne. For 2026, check the sales channel on the organizer’s website.

Where to stay and which ski area to choose

Booking aggregators list about 136 places to stay in Bormio, a figure that varies from one platform to another. No official 2026 accommodation list was found. Hotels in the centre cut down on driving. Hotel sites also highlight Bormio 2000, linked to the village by gondola: lodging close to the gondola avoids the car in winter, according to a local booking source.

On a tighter budget, compare with Santa Caterina di Valfurva, a neighboring resort in the same valley, or with Livigno, reached via the Foscagno pass or the Munt La Schera tunnel. For Livigno, the Foscagno is open 24 hours a day, with snow tires or chains required from October 15 to April 30; the tunnel is a toll road, limited to 3.60 m in height, with alternating traffic. We did not find rates for race week in Livigno or Santa Caterina, and no capacity data was found for Santa Caterina.

Tourist tax: the 2026 rate is not published. Confirm it with the Bormio municipality before budgeting.

The ski area is due to open in early December: the resort announces December 4, a specialist site December 5, and closing is planned for April 11, 2027. The sources do not count the same things: 30 runs according to skiinfo, about 50 km of runs according to SnowTrex. They agree on the altitudes, from 1,200 m to 3,017 m at the top. If you are choosing between several ski areas this winter, our article on the Dolomites ski opening 2026-2027 is a useful comparison.
