Venice’s access fee will run on 72 days in 2027, according to the press, from Friday 26 March to Sunday 15 August. 15 August: announced by the press, not confirmed by the official source. The announced cap is €10 per person, against 60 paid days in 2026 (3 April to 26 July).
Checked on against the visit.venice.it page (updated 6 September 2026) and the Italian press from 15 to 23 October 2026. The official 2027 text could not be read.
Do you have to pay to enter Venice in 2027? Yes, if you spend the day in the historic centre on one of the designated days. The access fee (contributo di accesso) will run on 72 paid days in 2027, up from 60 in 2026, according to the press. It isn’t an official text you can read yet: the 2027 price grid and exemptions still need to be confirmed.
Three levels of certainty, to read separately. Established: how the scheme works, the 2026 rules and the QR code. Announced: the 72 dates and the €10 cap. Unknown: the 2027 price, the amount of fines, future exemptions and the transit rule.
Who pays the access fee, and who doesn’t
The access fee is a daily charge for entering the historic centre. You pay per person and per day of visit, on the dates set by the Comune, for anyone who enters the historic city during checking hours. A traveller who sleeps in the municipality falls under a different rule, covered further down.
For day trips out of Venice, our guide to day trips from Venice lists the options by destination.

Murano, Burano and the Lido: out of scope, unless you pass through the centre
According to the visit.venice.it page updated on 6 September 2026, Murano, Burano, Torcello and the Lido aren’t affected. The catch is the route: passing through the historic centre during checking hours brings the trip into scope. So the return to Venice is the thing to check before you leave.
Key points
- Out of scope: Murano, Burano, Torcello and the Lido.
- In scope: any passage through the centre during checks.
- Hours: 8:30 am to 4:00 pm in 2026. For 2027, the hours haven’t been set yet.
2027 calendar: 72 days announced by the press
The calendar was relayed on 15 October 2026 by La Voce di Venezia and Radio Clodia, picked up on 16 October by Keystone-SDA, then detailed by Nordest24 on 23 October. La Voce di Venezia, Radio Clodia, Nordest24 and visit-venice-italy.com all give the same list of 72 dates; Keystone-SDA confirms the number of days and the cap. The official text couldn’t be read: the portal and the Comune’s website blocked automated access on the day we checked. So read these dates as announcements.
The days don’t run in a row: 72 days spread over 143 calendar days, with runs of consecutive days from 23 to 30 April, 28 to 31 May and 1 to 6 June. The first day, Friday 26 March, is Good Friday, and Easter Monday (29 March) is on the list. The last day, Sunday 15 August, is « announced by the press, not confirmed by the official source ».
For reference, 2025 had 54 paid days. For 2025, the press cites about 723,497 payers and close to €5.4 million in revenue, provisional figures (Italpress).

The table below puts 2026 and 2027 side by side. The 2026 rules come from the official page, the 2027 announcements from the press.
| Criterion | 2026 | 2027 (announced) |
|---|---|---|
| Paid days | 60 | 72, according to the press |

| Cap | See the Prices section | €10 per person announced; grid not published |
| Payment portal opening | 3 March 2026 (press) | No opening announced as of the check |
| Exemptions | Detailed categories on the visit.venice.it page updated 6 September 2026 | Not published |
Source: visit.venice.it, page updated 6 September 2026, for 2026 (portal opening: press, L’Adige and Ulysse); Keystone-SDA (16 October 2026) and Nordest24 (23 October 2026) for 2027, checked 24 October 2026.
Prices: a €10 cap announced, no 2027 grid published yet
In 2026, the access fee cost €5 per person if you paid at the latest four days before your visit, and €10 beyond that. The sources don’t agree on that cut-off: visit.venice.it says the fourth day before the visit, while veneto.info and The Local mention three days. Go with the City’s threshold and check it on the portal before you pay.
The ticket is named to you and valid until 24:00 on the day shown. Refunds: possible if you ask before the valid day; after that, you need to prove you didn’t enter the city or that an exemption applied. These are the rules from visit.venice.it (page updated 6 September 2026); whether they carry over to 2027 isn’t confirmed.
For 2027, the €10 per person cap was reported on 16 October 2026 by Keystone-SDA and several Italian outlets. Nordest24, on 23 October, says no amount per visitor has been set yet. So treat €10 as the announced maximum, with no certainty the 2026 grid will be kept.
A bigger increase was floated: in June 2026, the new mayor Simone Venturini proposed a ticket of up to €50, with dynamic pricing (Euronews and Il Post, 19 June 2026). Clever Tourists, on 18 October 2026, says that increase is ruled out for now. No resolution we read adopts it.
Exemptions and QR code: the 2026 categories, nothing published for 2027

Who doesn’t pay, but still has to register
Exempt people still have to register. On the official portal, they pick the « exemption » option and get a named QR code by email, to show at a check. According to visit.venice.it, that registration is required even without paying, including for a guest in accommodation registered in the municipality.
The visit.venice.it page updated on 6 September 2026 lists the exempt categories for 2026:
- residents of the municipality of Venice, workers and commuters, students, and their household;
- people who pay the IMU property tax on a property in the municipality;
- guests of accommodation registered in the municipality, with free registration required;
- temporary residents, people born in Venice, residents of the metropolitan city and of the Veneto region;
- children under 14;
- certified disabled people and one companion;
- patients and their companions for a medical visit;
- athletes in officially recognised competition;
- tenants on non-tourist residential leases;
- secondary school groups on an educational trip;
- spouses, civil partners and relatives up to the third degree of a resident.
Nothing is published for 2027. According to La Voce di Venezia and Nordest24, exemptions will be set by a later resolution, whose text we haven’t read. Don’t assume a category will carry over unchanged. Cruise passengers on shore excursions weren’t exempt in 2026, according to Clever Tourists (18 October 2026). A 2025 resolution mentions a charge for cruise passengers arriving at Porto Marghera, with no confirmation for 2026 or 2027.
Budget: what a day in the historic centre costs
The maths works per person, per day. The table applies the announced €10 cap for 2027. Children under 14 don’t pay, under the 2026 categories.
| Profile | Paying people | Cost at the announced cap (€10 per person) |
|---|---|---|
| Solo visitor | 1 | €10 |
| Couple | 2 | €20 |
| Two adults and a 16-year-old | 3 | €30 |
| Two adults and two children under 14 | 2 | €20 |
| Traveller sleeping in the municipality | 0 | €0 (free registration) |
Source: calculation from the announced 2027 cap (Keystone-SDA, 16 October 2026), checked 24 October 2026.
Three levers exist, all tied to the 2027 grid. Pay within the set deadline (see the Prices section). Pick a day outside the calendar, which means no charge. Or sleep in the municipality, which exempts you from the access fee but triggers the tourist tax, whose amount hasn’t been officially confirmed.
A paid day, step by step
The steps follow the 2026 rules, while we wait for the 2027 portal.
- Check the date. The dates are announced by the press. The Comune’s resolution will set them, and the 2027 text couldn’t be read. Check before you book.
- Pay within the deadline. The reduced-rate threshold is set out in the Prices section. Plan to pay early, and check the threshold on the portal.
- Register every traveller aged 14 and over. Registration is per person, with the visit date, then payment by card.
- Keep the QR code handy. It arrives by email. Clever Tourists says a screenshot is accepted; a printout is safer if the signal drops.
Coming on a day that isn’t designated avoids the charge. Check the final 2027 calendar before you go.
Sleeping in Venice: no access fee, but you still register

Registered accommodation: the exemption goes through registration
A night in accommodation registered in the municipality exempts you from the access fee. You still have to register on the official portal to get the free QR code. The municipality covers historic Venice, Mestre and the Lido: accommodation registered in any of these areas qualifies for the exemption, according to Clever Tourists (18 October 2026) and veneto.info.
The official tourist tax rate wasn’t in the sources we read. Secondary sources (veneto.info, Ulysse and other guides) cite €1 to €5 per person per night, depending on the accommodation category and season. Treat these as rough figures and confirm with your accommodation.
Options by traveller type
- Family with children. Children under 14 are exempt. Each traveller aged 14 and over pays, or registers if they’re exempt: the budget covers teenagers and adults.
- Couple or solo traveller on a tight budget. The clearest lever is the calendar: a day that isn’t designated means no charge. The reduced-rate threshold is in the Prices section.
- Someone with a disability. The certified person and one companion are exempt under the 2026 categories. Prepare your documents and check the registration steps on the portal.
- Cruise passenger. Shore-excursion passengers weren’t exempt in 2026, according to Clever Tourists. The 2027 rule isn’t published: check with your cruise line.
Checks and fines: a range that varies by source
There are no turnstiles: checks are spot checks, at the main access points and within the centre. The provisional 2026 tally counts 2,642 fine notices issued by the local police, still under review at the time of the tally (visit.venice.it, July 2026).
The City’s page gives an administrative fine of €25 to €150, on top of the €10 owed. Clever Tourists and veneto.info cite €50 to €300. We didn’t check the regulation that sets the exact amount: go with the City’s dated range, bearing in mind that other sources quote a higher figure.
| Source | Source date | Range cited |
|---|---|---|
| visit.venice.it (official City site) | 6 September 2026 | €25 to €150, plus the €10 owed |
| The Local | 9 December 2025 | €25 to €150 (2025 range) |
| veneto.info | 2025 page | €50 to €300, plus the €10 unpaid |
| Clever Tourists | 18 October 2026 | €50 to €300 |
| Ulysse | 2026 | €50 to €300, plus the amount owed |
Source: pages cited, checked 24 October 2026. The municipal regulation, which we didn’t read, sets the exact amount.
Station, Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto: the transit rule is still unclear
If you arrive by train, bus or car, you pass points where checks are reported: Santa Lucia station, Piazzale Roma, the Tronchetto and the water bus stops, according to Clever Tourists (18 October 2026) and Wanderlust Designers (24 August 2026). The open question is whether simply crossing through, without entering the centre, triggers a charge. The sources don’t settle it: some say direct transit isn’t charged, others cite checks at the same points.
Given where the sources stand, assume a stop at these points can be checked. Mestre is part of the municipality, but the exemption depends on your accommodation, not on where you arrive: that reading still needs checking against the official text. Cruise passengers should also read their line’s rules, since the sources give no figure for the Stazione Marittima.
What other guides don’t tell you
Three points missing from the guides we read, or given inaccurately, with their sources. Checked 24 October 2026.
- The City hadn’t published the 2027 calendar when it last updated its page in September 2026. Guides that list 72 days without caveats don’t say so. Source: visit.venice.it, page updated 6 September 2026.
- The provisional 2026 tally is 679,553 tickets paid, for €5,215,035, with 53.5% bought at €10. Guides only give the 2025 figures. Source: visit.venice.it, July 2026 tally (figures picked up by VenetoNews).
- The City’s €25 to €150 fine range is contradicted by other guides that cite €50 to €300. The Local notes that €25 to €150 referred to 2025. Sources: visit.venice.it (6 September 2026); The Local (9 December 2025).
