The 2026 Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) runs from Saturday 28 November to Sunday 6 December 2026 at Expo Guadalajara, Mexico. Full adult entry costs 40 MXN, about €1.90 at the ECB rate of 23 October 2026. Italy is guest of honour at the 40th edition, its second time in that role after 2008.

Checked on against the official sources cited (fil.com.mx, Farnesina, ECB).

Every late autumn, Guadalajara in Mexico hosts the book fair that the FIL describes as the largest in the Spanish language. The 40th edition, organised by the Universidad de Guadalajara, lasts nine days. It has a trade section, reserved for publishers, agents and rights buyers over three days, and a public fair with book signings, free concerts and a space for children. This year, Italy is guest of honour.

This guide gives the dates day by day, the official prices, the presentation calendar for the Italian programme (17 July 2026) and the figures published by the Italian ministry. When a piece of information could not be confirmed by an official source, the article says so.

1. Guadalajara, the city hosting the fair

Guadalajara, capital of Jalisco

Jalisco, Mexico Fair from 28 Nov. to 6 Dec. 2026 Dry season, cool nights

Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco. Its historic centre keeps its colonial architecture, and the murals by José Clemente Orozco at the Hospicio Cabañas are among the sights not to miss. The fair is held away from the centre: Expo Guadalajara, Avenida Mariano Otero 1499, in the Verde Valle district, is about 8.3 km as the crow flies from the centre, according to foiresinfo.fr, a third-party source.

Highlights

  • The historic centre and its murals, best explored on foot.
  • Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, nearby, for crafts: ceramics, glass and textiles.
Pixidia tip: for a free half-day between sessions, the guided walk below lets you see the centre without arranging the trip yourself.

Departures for this walk run eight days out of nine between 28 November and 6 December. The start time and duration are to be checked on the Viator listing.

2. Dates and opening hours: nine days, three of them reserved for trade visitors

The 40th edition runs from Saturday 28 November to Sunday 6 December 2026. The mornings of 30 November, 1 and 2 December are reserved for book trade professionals, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The public is admitted from 3:00 pm on those three days, according to the FIL information page and FAQ. Be aware that the FIL ticketing page and the Expo Guadalajara page give 4:00 pm for those days. We retain 3:00 pm, which appears on two FIL pages, against 4:00 pm on two others, but checking fil.com.mx before you travel is recommended.

On 4 December the fair stays open until 11:00 pm, according to the FAQ. On the other days, hours run from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

We did not verify the accreditation conditions for trade visitors. Check with the organiser before attending on the reserved days.

3. Tickets: 40 MXN at full price, with discounts that need proof

The full adult price is 40 MXN. The reduced rate of 30 MXN applies to children aged 3 to 12, seniors holding an INAPAM card, people with a disability, students, teachers and members of the UdeG Foundation, with proof. Students of the Universidad de Guadalajara pay 25 MXN. Children under 3 enter free.

One search result gives a different full-price figure; the official FIL FAQ gives 40 MXN.

Presales run from 8 October to 20 November 2026. They take place at the FIL offices, Avenida Alemania 1370, Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, or online via BoletoMóvil. On-site sales at Expo Guadalajara start on 28 November.

Your ticket also gives access to FIL Niños, the children’s area: Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, then Monday to Friday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Concerts at the Foro FIL are free, subject to available seats.

4. Italy, guest of honour at the 40th edition

Italy is guest of honour at the 2026 edition, its second time in that role after 2008, according to the press release of the Farnesina, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published in July 2026. The programme was presented at the Farnesina on 17 July 2026.

The ministry’s figures for the Italian participation are: 61 authors, 33 publishers, nine concerts and ten exhibitions. A press article dated 8 October 2026 announces fifteen exhibitions. We retain the ministry’s figure.

The detailed programme, meaning the dates, venues and speakers day by day, could not be verified: the PDF documents published by the Farnesina could not be read. This article therefore gives no date, venue or speaker for the Italian events. Check the official programme on fil.com.mx as the fair approaches.

The Italian slogan is « Il mondo ci parla come un grande libro ». According to the Farnesina, the line is attributed to Umberto Eco, who died ten years ago. We do not offer an English translation presented as official: none was found on the FIL website.

5. Premio FIL 2026: Gioconda Belli

The 2026 Premio FIL for literature in Romance languages has been awarded to Gioconda Belli, the Nicaraguan poet and novelist. According to Crónica, the jury decided unanimously, and the award was announced on 31 August 2026. The prize should be presented at the opening on 28 November, according to the press.

We found no official amount for this prize. Figures circulating in the press are not confirmed by the FIL, so we do not repeat them.

6. France at the FIL: group stand and professional meetings

France has a group stand every year, with the support of France Livre. For the 2026 edition, a delegation of twelve professionals, publishers or agents, is invited by the IFAL.

Professional meetings between French and Latin American publishers will take place on the stand on 30 November and 1 December, according to the France Livre listing. The detailed programme of these meetings was not checked for this article. For a visitor coming as a simple attendee, these two mornings are reserved for professionals: the public is admitted only from 3:00 pm.

7. A fair that presents itself as the largest in Spanish

The attendance figures available are 857,315 visitors in 2023 (English Wikipedia) and 953,112 in 2025, according to Líder Empresarial (8 December 2025). That last figure is preliminary, published before the fair ended. The 2025 edition also had 2,790 publishers from 64 countries, more than 3,000 activities and about 450,000 titles.

The comparison has its limits. Frankfurt is mainly a trade fair, the FIL mixes the general public and trade visitors, and visitor counts include repeat visits. The table below puts three benchmarks side by side.

8. Getting to Guadalajara and Expo Guadalajara

There is no direct flight between France and Guadalajara as of the date we checked. Specialist press reports an Aeroméxico route between Paris and Guadalajara from 2027. We found no airline announcement confirming the dates and times: check the airline’s website before you book.

An Aeroméxico flight from Madrid to Guadalajara (AM39) operated on 6 October 2026; the frequency is not confirmed.

From the airport to the city centre, sources give a journey of 20 to 40 minutes. We found no official taxi or ride-hailing fare, and estimates vary widely. Do not rely on any figure without checking it when you take the ride.

According to our research, line 3 of the Tren Ligero links the northern area of Zapopan with central Tlaquepaque, not central Guadalajara. According to the press, its nearest station to Expo Guadalajara is Periférico Belenes; the walk from that station has not been verified. A free shuttle was offered in 2025, according to the press: whether it runs in 2026 is not confirmed.

9. Safety: what official sources say

The points below were checked on 24 October 2026. They do not replace checking your foreign ministry’s page on the day you leave.

  • France. The Mexico page on diplomatie.gouv.fr, last updated on 15 October 2026, reports a cyclone alert on the Pacific coast, including Jalisco, advising people to stay away from the sea. The alert concerns the coast, not the city. We could not read the alert level specific to the state of Jalisco.
  • United Kingdom. The gov.uk site advises travellers to go to some areas of Mexico only if the trip is essential. During the violence of February 2026, the Foreign Office advised against travel to Jalisco except for essential journeys. Press reports say flights to Guadalajara have since resumed.
  • United States. The State Department website could not be consulted. The US level is therefore not included in this article.
  • Context. According to the press, the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as « El Mencho », on 22 February 2026 triggered road blockades and vehicle fires in the Guadalajara metropolitan area. Classes were suspended on 23 February, and the federal government announced a return to normal the following day.

State authorities say there is no longer any recent security problem. This claim has not been independently verified. For a nine-day stay, the sourced advice is to follow official advisories on the day you leave.

10. Budget: what is verified and what is not

The entry ticket is the only cost for which we have the official amount: 40 MXN, about €1.90. For the rest, travel sites give very different ranges, rarely dated: we do not repeat them.

  • Entry. 40 MXN at full price, with the reductions detailed in section 3.
  • Accommodation and transport. These are the two costs that weigh most. We could not verify any accommodation or transport fare from an official source or a provider for the dates of the fair.
  • Meals. Testimonies from book trade professionals, dated 2014 to 2019, describe the food on site as expensive: bringing snacks is a simple saving.

Compare several neighbourhoods before you book. Euro conversions use the ECB reference rate of 23 October 2026 (21.0226 MXN for €1): recalculate them on the day you leave.

11. Itinerary: three sample days

A visitor’s day, Saturday 28 November

The fair opens to the public at 9:00 am, with no morning restriction that day. Buy your ticket on site, at 40 MXN at full price. Plan a break in the middle of the day: testimonies from trade professionals, dated 2014 to 2019, describe the food on site as expensive, so bring water and snacks. The day-by-day programme is available on fil.com.mx.

A trade professional’s day, Monday 30 November

The mornings from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm are reserved for trade professionals. This is the day the France stand meetings are scheduled, according to France Livre. The public can enter from 3:00 pm.

A free day for the city, Sunday 29 November

Keep a morning for the city, then head to Expo Guadalajara early in the afternoon. The length of the visit is to be checked on the Viator listing.

12. Depending on your profile

Families

Children under 3 enter free. Children aged 3 to 12 pay the reduced rate of 30 MXN, with proof. FIL Niños, the children’s area, is included with the ticket. On Saturday and Sunday it opens from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and from Monday to Friday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Student or teacher

A student of the Universidad de Guadalajara pays 25 MXN. Students and teachers from other institutions fall into the reduced category at 30 MXN, with proof. Come outside the trade-only mornings if you are not registered as a professional.

Senior or person with a disability

The INAPAM card for seniors and disability status give access to the reduced rate, with proof. We did not verify the physical accessibility of the site or the services available: contact the organiser before your visit.

First time in Mexico

Keep at least one day for the city, pack warm clothes for the evenings, and sort out the entry formalities before you leave. The city’s altitude and the cool December nights are tips from book trade professionals in testimonies published between 2014 and 2019. They remain useful, provided you keep their date in mind.

Trade professional

The three reserved mornings are the core of the activity for publishers, agents and rights buyers. The French delegation and the meetings of 30 November and 1 December are directly relevant to this audience.

13. Three mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting the proof for the reduced rate. Without it, you pay full price.
  • Arriving as a visitor on the morning of 30 November. The mornings on those three days are reserved for trade professionals.
  • Relying on a taxi fare. No official fare was found, and estimates vary by up to double.

What other guides don’t tell you

Three points checked against official or direct sources, detailed above.

  • A disagreement on the entry time. The official FIL pages give 3:00 pm or 4:00 pm for public entry on 30 November, 1 and 2 December (fil.com.mx, checked on 24 October 2026).
  • A prize with no confirmed amount. The 2026 Premio FIL was awarded to Gioconda Belli, announced on 31 August 2026; no amount has been confirmed by the FIL (Crónica, checked on 24 October 2026).
  • French professional meetings. Meetings between French and Latin American publishers are planned on 30 November and 1 December on the France group stand (France Livre, checked on 24 October 2026).
