On the streets and squares of the centre, no booking needed: the only dated show for 31 December 2026 we found is Maurizio Battista at the Teatro Olimpico, at 9:45 pm, on a paid ticket. The free Circo Massimo concert of 2025-2026 has not been announced for this edition as of 24 October 2026.

Checked on against the official sources cited (Roma Capitale, Turismo Roma, werunrome.com, colosseo.it).

New Year’s Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday. But the questions people ask before they leave (where to go, do you need to book, is the concert still free?) don’t all have an official answer yet. This article separates what a source dated 24 October 2026 confirms from what is only tradition or expectation. The 2025-2026 edition is the reference, and it is labelled as such. As of 24 October 2026, the free Circo Massimo concert is not announced for 31 December; the only dated show we found is Maurizio Battista’s, at 9:45 pm, on a paid ticket.

1. 31 December 2026: what is dated and what is not

New Year’s Eve is the night of Thursday 31 December 2026 into Friday 1 January 2027. That date is not in doubt. The programme for the night, however, is only being published in pieces. As of 24 October 2026, several events are listed by an official source or an organiser. The most important one, the free Circo Massimo concert held in 2025-2026, is not among them.

The table below sums up what is known. Rows marked « not confirmed » or « to be confirmed » are not commitments: they only show what is still missing.

Turismo Roma’s listing says the programme is still « being defined ». Ticket aggregators show prices for that show, but none come from the organiser, so we don’t repeat them. For the race, one aggregator gives 30 December as the date: that is an error, the official date is the 31st.

2. Spending the evening outdoors: squares, viewpoints and a night walk

A night tour by golf cart

From €74.99 per adult 31 December and 1 January Departures at 8 pm and 9:30 pm Places checked on 24 October

New Year’s Eve in Rome is mostly lived in the historic centre. For an organised outing in the evening, Viator offers a golf cart tour. Availability was checked on 24 October 2026: for the TG1 option, there are departures at 8 pm and 9:30 pm on both nights. Places can change before you book.

What happens around midnight is not described in the sources we checked. If the countdown matters to you, read the tour listing before you book the 9:30 pm departure.

Highlights

  • Places still open for the 8 pm departure on 31 December: 67 seen on 24 October 2026
  • Two price options listed: €74.99 to €89.99 per adult for TG1, €104.99 to €119.99 for TG2
  • One departure available on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
Pixidia tip: If you haven’t booked a table, eat before the tour rather than counting on a service after it.

Piazza del Popolo and the big squares

Free access Historic centre Evening of the 31st No official programme yet

Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona and Piazza Venezia are central squares. The obelisk in Piazza del Popolo makes a fine backdrop for the countdown. No official programme is attached to them for 2026-2027. Crowds can be dense: stay together and keep your belongings close.

If you’re also spending a few days in Rome before the end of the year, the Piazza Navona market and the nativity scenes have their own guide: Christmas in Rome 2026: Piazza Navona market, nativity scenes and Christmas trees.

Squares are free to access, but they are not organised show spaces. If you’re after a specific event, a square isn’t the right choice until the city publishes its programme.

Highlights

  • No booking, no ticket, no time slot to keep
  • A lit-up urban setting you can walk to from the centre
  • An easy starting point for walking back to central hotels

For midnight, viewpoints such as the Gianicolo or the Pincio give a clear view over the city. However, no public source confirms that fireworks are set off from them for a given edition. Pick them for the view, not for a specific firework display (see section 4).

3. Circo Massimo: a free concert last year, nothing announced this year

The 2025-2026 edition is the strongest reference we can cite. Roma Capitale announced a free concert at Circo Massimo in December 2025, starting at 9 pm on 31 December, with Alessandra Amoroso, Fabri Fibra and Tananai. That announcement is the reference for that edition, not the sites that repeat it.

Security took centre stage. According to the news agency ANSA, on 30 December 2025 the authorities expected more than 40,000 people at the site and were installing metal detectors at the entrances. That figure was a security forecast, not a count. For the 2024-2025 edition (31 December 2024), Turismo Roma reported « more than 70,000 people », without giving a source for the figure on the page.

The site itself is crossed on foot, through several entrances. In 2024-2025, five pedestrian entrances gave access to Circo Massimo, and a reserved area required registration by email. That area has not been renewed to date, so presenting it as a rule for 2026 would be a mistake. This year’s access arrangements have not been announced.

For 2026-2027, no official announcement had been found as of 24 October 2026. A private website already shows a concert in the conditional tense. That is not a confirmation, and we don’t repeat the time, the line-up or the access details it gives. The programme, the times, the security perimeter and the free entry all remain to be confirmed. Roma Capitale’s press releases and the Turismo Roma listings are the only sources to follow.

If the concert returns, allow time for security checks at the entrances (metal detectors were in place in 2025-2026) and stay near an identified entry point. That is practical advice, not an official instruction.

4. Fireworks and firecrackers: what the rule says

No official firework location has been published for 31 December 2026. Guides mention the Gianicolo, the Pincio or the area around the Colosseum. No public source confirms a display from these spots for a given edition. So don’t build your evening around one specific display: pick a place for the atmosphere, and let the fireworks happen wherever they happen.

For firecrackers, the rule is clearer, but we have not checked its wording. According to a decision by the Campidoglio (Rome’s city hall), reported by the specialist site Greenme, their use is banned in Rome from 1 December to 31 January, under the city’s police regulations. The regulation should be read on the Roma Capitale official notice board (albo pretorio). The specific order for the end of 2025 set a fine of €25 to €500 (Sky TG24, 31 December 2025). The 2026-2027 order had not been published as of the date consulted.

The first tally of the 2025-2026 night, relayed by the news agency AGI on 1 January 2026 from Questura (police headquarters) data, reported 28 injured, around 500 calls and 250 call-outs. It also mentioned a 63-year-old man who died in Acilia after a firecracker exploded. Other accounts gave different figures early in the night: these tallies change. Quote them with their date and source.

Pixidia tip: Setting off a firecracker in the city risks, under the 2025-2026 order, a fine of €25 to €500. In the streets, keep away from groups letting them off, especially around midnight, and don’t pick up pieces that have fallen to the ground.

5. The Colosseum: short winter hours, and closed on 1 January on the official list, to be reconfirmed

Winter hours: last entry at 3:30 pm

Paid ticket, on sale 30 days ahead Park closes at 4:30 pm Winter: 25 October to 28 February 1 January 2027: closed, to be reconfirmed

The official site’s page lists winter hours from 25 October to 28 February, with a last entry at 3:30 pm and the park closing at 4:30 pm (colosseo.it, opening times and tickets, checked on 24 October 2026). On 31 December, the monument is therefore not a night-time spot. Visit in the afternoon, and spend the evening outside.

The same official list includes a closure on 1 January 2027. Check the page again before you count on the monument that day. The opening time for the winter period does not appear in the extract we checked, so it still needs confirming on the page.

Tickets are sold online 30 days before the visit. For 31 December, sales would open around 1 December. The slot was not yet on sale on 24 October 2026.

Highlights

  • An afternoon visit on 31 December is possible, before the last entry
  • A ticket to buy online, in advance, 30 days before the visit
  • A monument you can see from the street in the evening, for free
Pixidia tip: If the visit matters to you, book the afternoon slot as soon as it opens and don’t count on a last-minute entry. For the evening, the Colosseum is best seen from the street.

6. Getting around on New Year’s Eve

In 2025-2026, the city extended metro service to about 2:30 am on the night of 31 December to 1 January. The plan cited by the site Sicurauto also foresaw buses, trams and trains running until 9 pm on the 31st. For 2026-2027, no plan has been published. Guides give different closing times (2:30, 3 or 3:30 am) with no dated source: don’t copy them as they are. Watch for ATAC announcements in the week of 28 December.

For airport arrivals and departures, the Leonardo Express has been running at night since September 2024, according to the Lazio Region: a departure at 11:35 pm from Termini and one at 12:23 am from Fiumicino. This regular service still needs confirming for the holidays, as its New Year’s Eve timetable has not been published.

Fixed taxi fares between Rome and the airports were last revised in July 2024. No extra charge specific to 31 December has been found. Finally, no transport strike had been announced for 31 December 2026 as of 24 October 2026. Check again the week before.

If you stay in Rome after New Year’s Eve, the day trip to Tivoli from Rome is an option for the rest of your stay.

7. New Year’s Eve without booking: what works, what needs a spot

A whole evening is possible without a reservation, as long as you accept not having a table booked in advance for dinner. The guides we read recommend booking a restaurant, since New Year’s Eve tables go weeks ahead. No official source makes it compulsory. The table below sorts the options by what they require.

Sources: see table 1 and the Sources section. Restaurant prices from the Christmas 2025 guides, checked on 24 October 2026; 2026 prices are not published.

The streets, squares and viewpoints of the centre can be enjoyed without booking. For 1 January, most Capodarte 2026 events were free, across more than 100 events in the neighbourhoods, according to the city’s press kit. The 2027 programme is not published yet, so we can’t promise it will be the same.

  • The historic centre, on foot, on the evening of 31 December
  • Most Capodarte events on 1 January 2026 were free (last year’s edition; the 2027 programme is not published)

Three things need a spot or a ticket: the Maurizio Battista show, the We Run Rome race (without registration, no bib), and the golf cart tour. The Colosseum also needs booking, must be bought in advance, and its last winter entry is at 3:30 pm. The New Year’s Eve dinner is where a reservation changes the evening the most, according to the guides we consulted.

St Peter’s. The vespers and Te Deum on 31 December 2025 were scheduled for 5:00 pm (Holy See Press Office bulletin, 31 December 2025). For 2026-2027, no programme has been published, and access has not been verified to date.

8. Depending on your situation

With family. The Maurizio Battista show is not recommended for children under 3, according to the Turismo Roma listing, and everyone needs a ticket, whatever their age. For the golf cart tour, check the minimum age on the Viator listing before you book. In our view, a calm walk through the centre avoids the countdown crowds better than a golf cart tour.

As a couple. Dinner is the thing to book. For the rest, an evening walk and a stop in a central square are enough for a New Year’s Eve without a packed programme. If you’re aiming for the Circo Massimo concert, don’t leave the decision to the last minute: the official announcement has not been made yet.

On a tight budget. The streets and central squares cost nothing, and most Capodarte events were free in 2026. The 5 km race costs €18 until 18 December, and the 10 km competitive €22 until 18 November. Dinner is the only item that can climb: the 2025 benchmarks run from €35 to about €150 without drinks.

On a first visit. Termini is the city’s main interchange, and it is also one of the places where pickpockets are most active, according to a security alert relayed by the press (Fanpage, secondary source). Keep your belongings on you on public transport and around the station, and keep track of your way back before midnight. For a neighbourhood programme, our guide to Trastevere covers experiences in the area.

With reduced mobility. The sources we checked give no accessibility information for the New Year’s Eve night, whether for the squares or for transport. Contact the sites and operators directly before you go, rather than relying on a guide that doesn’t mention it.

What other guides don’t tell you

The five points below rest on official pages or organisers’ sites. Those that rely on the press (the firecracker rules, the Questura tally) are flagged as such.

  • As of 24 October 2026, the Maurizio Battista show is the only dated show for 31 December 2026 that we found in the City of Rome’s listings. Turismo Roma gives 9:45 pm at the Teatro Olimpico, with a provisional programme and a ticket required, to be bought at the theatre (Turismo Roma, checked on 24 October 2026).
  • We Run Rome has a precise start time and prices for 2026. The start is 2:00 pm on 31 December, with €22 for the 10 km competitive until 18 November and €18 for the 5 km until 18 December. One aggregator gives 30 December as the date: that is an error (werunrome.com, checked on 24 October 2026).
  • According to the police regulations reported by the press, firecrackers are banned from 1 December to 31 January. The text of the regulation has not been checked. The 2025-2026 order carried a fine of €25 to €500 (Greenme, checked on 24 October 2026; Sky TG24, 31 December 2025).
  • The 2025-2026 night’s tally and the planned security measures are documented by the press. The first tally relayed by the news agency AGI on 1 January 2026 counts 28 injured and one death in Acilia. Beforehand, the authorities expected more than 40,000 people at Circo Massimo and installed metal detectors at the entrances (AGI, checked on 24 October 2026; ANSA, 30 December 2025).
  • The Colosseum is not a night-time spot, and it is closed on 1 January 2027 according to the official list, to be reconfirmed. The last winter entry is at 3:30 pm, and the park closes at 4:30 pm (colosseo.it, checked on 24 October 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Where can you celebrate New Year’s Eve in Rome?

On the streets and in the squares of the centre, with no booking needed. The only dated show we found is Maurizio Battista’s, at the Teatro Olimpico on 31 December 2026 at 9:45 pm: a ticket is required, to be bought at the theatre, and its price is not published (Turismo Roma, checked on 24 October 2026). The free Circo Massimo concert of 2025-2026 has not been announced for this edition.

Is there a free concert at Circo Massimo on 31 December 2026?

Not as of 24 October 2026: no official announcement from Roma Capitale or Turismo Roma has been published. The 2025-2026 edition was free from 9 pm, with Alessandra Amoroso, Fabri Fibra and Tananai, according to the city’s press release from December 2025. A private website shows a concert in the conditional tense: that is not a confirmation. Watch Roma Capitale’s press releases from December.

Where can you watch the fireworks in Rome on 31 December?

No location has been published for 2026-2027. Guides mention the Gianicolo, the Pincio and the area around the Colosseum, but no public source confirms a display from these spots for a given edition. The best bet is to pick a viewpoint for the view over the city, rather than count on a specific firework at a specific time.

Do you need to book a restaurant for New Year’s Eve in Rome?

The guides we read recommend it, since New Year’s Eve tables go weeks ahead. No official source makes it compulsory. For reference, the New Year’s Eve dinners listed in the Christmas 2025 guides ran from about €35 to about €150 without drinks, depending on the venue (Romeing). Those prices are from 2025, not 2026.

Is the Colosseum open on 31 December and 1 January?

On 31 December, yes, on winter hours: last entry at 3:30 pm, park closing at 4:30 pm. On 1 January 2027, the official list shows a closure, to be reconfirmed on the page. Tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit, so the 31 December slot was not yet on sale on 24 October 2026 (colosseo.it).

Does the metro run on New Year’s Eve night?

In 2025-2026, yes, until about 2:30 am on 1 January, according to the city plan cited by Sicurauto. The 2026-2027 plan is not published. For airports, the Leonardo Express leaves Termini at 11:35 pm and Fiumicino at 12:23 am, according to the Lazio Region: a regular service that still needs confirming for the holidays. Check ATAC’s announcements the week before.

Can you set off firecrackers in Rome?

No. According to the police regulations reported by Greenme, their use is banned from 1 December to 31 January; the text of the regulation has not been checked. The 2025-2026 order carried a fine of €25 to €500 (Sky TG24). The first tally for the 2025-2026 night, published on 1 January 2026, reported 28 injured, and that figure has changed since.

Is there a race in Rome on 31 December?

Yes: We Run Rome, on 31 December 2026 at 2:00 pm, starting from viale delle Terme di Caracalla. The 10 km competitive costs €22 until 18 November, within a limit of 3,500 bibs, and the 5 km non-competitive €18 until 18 December (werunrome.com, checked on 24 October 2026).

Is New Year’s Eve in Rome worth it?

The figures available describe a very large crowd: Turismo Roma reports more than 70,000 people at Circo Massimo on 31 December 2024 (the figure is not attributed on the page), and the authorities expected more than 40,000 people for 2025-2026 (ANSA, a forecast).
