Margaret River is best seen on a guided day out: eight experiences on Viator, from €38.01 for the 2-hour surf lesson to €157.13 per adult for the 5.5-hour Discovery day. For a first visit, the Discovery day combines wine, canoe and 4×4 in 5.5 hours.

Checked on against the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Margaret River comes down to one picture: a wine region, a wild coast and a small town of 7,430 people, about 277 km south of Perth. Once you’re there, the hard part isn’t finding something to do but choosing. There are around a hundred cellar doors open for tasting, roughly 75 surf breaks, six limestone caves open to the public, and tours that range from a 2-hour surf lesson to a 9-hour full-day outing.

We went through the destination’s Viator catalogue, checked on November 5, 2026, and kept eight experiences that stand up. The top-listed tour, the Discovery Tour, is the one with the most reviews (2,155, for a 4.99 rating). The ranking follows the traveler’s profile, not the rating alone: a full day for someone with only a few days, a half-day on the river for anyone who wants to leave the vines, a surf lesson for anyone who wants to get in the water, a wine day for anyone who came mainly for the cellar doors.

You’re not looking for the longest list. You want to know what a booking commits you to: how long the outing lasts, what it costs per person, whether cancellation is free, where to meet the operator in the morning. Each listing below gives those details as they appear on Viator on the date we checked. When a point isn’t published, we say so. Three experiences don’t publish a precise meeting point, to be confirmed with the operator, and two don’t offer free cancellation.

Why Margaret River: the Pixidia angle

The town of Margaret River sits about 277 km from Perth, in the southwest of Western Australia, on the coast of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste limestone ridge. The Wikipedia page for the town gives about 7,430 residents and roughly 75 surf breaks spread along nearly 130 km of coast. The same park holds six caves open to the public (Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park).

Wine is the reason most people come. The official regional site lists about 100 cellar doors open for tasting across a stretch of roughly 110 km, more than 40 of them rated five stars in the Halliday Wine Companion (Margaret River Wine Region). Third-party guides give figures from 95 to more than 200 cellar doors. So we write « around a hundred » and give no exact count, because no single figure is settled.

The drive from Perth takes 3 to 3.5 hours by car, up to 4 hours in traffic, via the Kwinana Freeway, the Forrest Highway, then the Bussell Highway (Intrepid Travel). The flight to Busselton airport takes about 40 minutes, but it saves little time once you add the transfer and the wait. Our view: for most readers, a guided day with pickup is worth more than renting a car.

Selection rule: of the 35 Viator products in the destination, 11 score above a 4.7 rating and 100 reviews. Eight are kept, ranked by traveler profile.

Prices in this selection are checked for the window from November 19, 2026 to January 17, 2027, which is the Australian summer: the driest season, the warmest waters, and heavy crowds at Christmas and New Year. Prices outside this window are not checked here. The Australian winter (June to August), wetter and quieter, is advertised with lower prices (Intrepid Travel, seasons): anyone aiming for that period should re-check every price. Wildflowers are advertised from August to November, with a peak in early October. The official page on the subject could not be read directly during our check, so we don’t use it as an argument for a December booking.

For a wider view of Australia, our 2026 guide to hotels and experiences maps the country’s main regions. For Perth, the departure city, our guide to what to do in Perth around the 2027 Rugby World Cup lists the activities on the spot.

The 8 best experiences in Margaret River

1. Discovery Tour: wine, canoe, 4×4 and coast, in a small group

Rating 4.99 (2155 reviews) 5.5 hours €157.13 per adult (base 2 people)

The title says it: this outing is for travelers who don’t want conventional tours. The group is capped at six guests. You meet at the rear car park of the Margaret River visitor centre, where you leave your car, then the day alternates between canoe-kayak and 4×4 along the coast. In between, a gourmet lunch with premium regional wines, and a local honey tasting. It suits anyone who has only one day to give the region and doesn’t want to drive. The point to check before booking is confirmation: it isn’t instant, so wait for the operator’s reply before fixing the rest of your stay. The listing shows 23 open days out of the 60 checked, the lowest in the selection, so book early. Free cancellation applies, which limits the risk of committing too early. At €157.13 per adult for two travelers, it is the most expensive in the selection, and it lasts 5.5 hours, while the 9-hour food and wine day is the longest on the list.

2. Behind the scenes with family producers, with an Italian lunch

Rating 4.99 (988 reviews) 7 hours €129.88 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

This day goes beyond the classic cellar doors. For seven hours, it takes you behind the scenes with family producers: a guided tasting of chocolate, olive oils and local products, an Italian lunch, and a taste of emu cooking, which is part of the title and of the experience. The vehicle is air-conditioned, tea and coffee are included, and the meeting point is the car park behind the Margaret River visitor centre, on Tunbridge Street. It’s the tour to pick if you want to understand the region through the people who make it, rather than through the labels. The right moment: a day with no other heavy outing planned, since the stops follow one another and lunch runs long. Don’t confuse it with the next tour on our list, the one with the cellars and Boranup Forest: the two listings have different durations, programs and prices, so compare them before you choose. Confirmation is instant and cancellation is free, which makes the booking an easier decision.

3. Wineries, Boranup Forest and lunch at Berry Farm

Rating 4.98 (292 reviews) 5.5 hours €107.71 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

If you want the same region for less money and a more varied pace, this is the tour. It has three parts: a coffee roastery visit and tasting, a walk through Boranup Forest, then lunch at Berry Farm. Between the stops, guided wine tastings at cellar doors punctuate the day, with alcoholic drinks included. It suits couples who want a five-and-a-half-hour outing without the intensity of a nine-hour day, and who enjoy nature as much as wine. Confirmation is instant, cancellation is free, and the listing shows 48 open days out of the 60 checked. The trap is confusing it with the behind-the-scenes tour in card 2: same Tunbridge Street meeting point, but a different program and price. Choose this one if the forest and coffee appeal to you, the other if producer visits and the Italian lunch do. At €107.71 per adult for two travelers, it is the lowest price among the wine-and-lunch days in the selection.

4. Full-day wine and food tour, 9 hours, small group

Rating 4.94 (412 reviews) 9 hours €117.21 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

This is the longest outing in the selection, and the one closest to a wine-tasting day in the strict sense. Nine hours in a small group, a lunch, wines and chocolate made on site, a vineyard and barrel experience, a coffee tasting and an olive-oil treatment. The program is dense, but it leaves time to stop. It suits anyone who has already seen the best-known cellar doors and wants a full day without chaining transfers. Two points matter before you book. First, cancellation isn’t free, as for the canoe in card 8: these are the only two outings on the list with that restriction. Second, the meeting point isn’t published: pickup is from your accommodation, but the exact location is to be confirmed with the operator. So be ready to give your exact address when you book. Confirmation is instant, and the listing shows 37 open days out of the 60 checked. At €117.21 per adult for two travelers, the price is attractive for a day this long.

5. Tannin Road: three wineries with a guide and pickup

Rating 4.87 (363 reviews) 6 to 7 hours €123.55 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

For anyone staying outside the centre, or who wants a day with no driving and no hunting for an address, Tannin Road is the simplest tour to organize. Pickup is from your accommodation from 10 a.m., in an air-conditioned vehicle, with a guide who knows the region’s wines. Three wineries are visited with guided tastings, whether independent estates or older establishments. Lunch is at a brewery or a bistro. Groups stay small, which leaves room for questions. The listing is filed under Busselton, but the visit covers the Margaret River region: don’t be surprised by that address. The duration varies between six and seven hours depending on how the day runs. Confirmation is instant and cancellation is free. The meeting point isn’t published: pickup is from your accommodation, with the location to be confirmed by the operator, so give your exact address when you book. The listing shows 45 open days out of the 60 checked. At €123.55 per adult, it is a mid-range price in the selection.

6. The Full Bottle: wine, cheese, chocolate and mini-golf

Rating 4.79 (266 reviews) 7 hours €123.55 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

This tour has a lower rating than the other full days on the list, 4.79 from 266 reviews, and it’s worth knowing that before you read the rest. It suits groups whose tastes differ: there’s wine, of course, but also cheese and crackers in the tasting, a chocolate factory visit, mini-golf at lunchtime and entry to the venues visited. Lunch comes with a craft beer, a glass of wine or a soft drink, your choice. Water is provided on board. Pickup is from accommodation in the region, but the exact location is to be confirmed with the operator, as with the other days that don’t publish a meeting point. The day lasts seven hours and confirmation is instant. Cancellation is free, so you can keep it as an option while you check the rest of your stay. It’s a good choice for a group looking for a lively day rather than a pure tasting. For a wine-focused day, prefer the three outings before it. The price is €123.55 per adult for two travelers, with 57 open days out of the 60 checked.

7. Group surf lesson, two hours at Redgate Beach

Rating 4.91 (117 reviews) 2 hours €38.01 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

If you want to get in the water, this is the simplest option in the selection. A two-hour group lesson, with board, wetsuit and rash vest provided, plus sunscreen. The lesson usually takes place at Redgate Beach, but the instructor can move it if sea conditions aren’t right: that’s the one thing to keep in mind, and the listing says so clearly. The instructor stays with you on the beach, in the water and on the wave, so you aren’t left alone with your first attempts. It’s a good way to try surfing without giving up a whole day, and to combine it with a tasting the same day if your schedule allows. Confirmation is instant and cancellation is free. The lesson is shared: you share the instructor with the group, not a private lesson.

8. River canoe and Australian lunch with bush food

Rating 4.86 (228 reviews) 4 hours €101.37 per adult (base 2 people) Instant confirmation

A half-day on the Margaret River, by canoe or kayak, followed by an Australian lunch built around bush food. The meeting time is 9:45 a.m. at the car park at the mouth of the Margaret River, in Prevelly. Guests must contact the office the day before. A local guide accompanies you, and all the equipment is provided. It suits anyone who wants an outing in contact with the water and the forest, without aiming for effort or speed, and who prefers a meal included to one bought on the spot. It is also a good answer to « what to do without wine »: the listing doesn’t mention any tasting. The point to keep in mind is cancellation, which isn’t free for this listing. So book once your dates are fixed. Confirmation is instant, the day lasts four hours, and the listing shows 56 open days out of the 60 checked. At €101.37 per adult for two travelers, this outing sits in the middle of the price range.

Getting ready for the trip

Getting there and around

From Perth, the drive takes 3 to 3.5 hours by car, up to 4 hours in traffic, via the Kwinana Freeway, the Forrest Highway, then the Bussell Highway. The flight to Busselton airport takes about 40 minutes, then 40 to 45 minutes by car or taxi. Flight schedules change: check them before you build a plan.

When to book

Our checks cover the window from November 19, 2026 to January 17, 2027. Christmas and New Year are peak dates: book early, and check availability for your exact date, since the check covers sixty days rather than a single day.

Budget

Prices are per person, based on two adults. For a couple, double the amount shown. Prices differ from one listing to the next, and each one can change after our check.

Practical tips on the ground

Car or guided day? For most travelers, a guided day is the right answer. The tastings and lunch included in most outings don’t mix with driving, and the hotel pickup offered by several listings saves you hunting for parking in a small town. If you want to visit several cellar doors at your own pace, rent a car for one day only, and leave the big outings to the operators.

The meeting point. Three listings don’t publish a precise location: pickup is from your accommodation, with the location to be confirmed by the operator. Give your exact address when you book, and keep the operator’s number on your phone on the day. For the others, the meeting point is the Margaret River visitor centre (rear car park, Tunbridge Street), the river mouth at Prevelly for the canoe, or Redgate Beach for the surf lesson.

Cancellation. Six of the eight listings offer free cancellation. Two don’t: the 9-hour food and wine day and the canoe with lunch. For those, book once your dates are firm. For the others, the flexibility lets you keep an outing on hold while you build the rest of your stay.

Don’t stack two long days. A 9-hour day followed by a 7-hour day is tiring, and the distances between cellar doors add up. Alternate a long outing with the 2-hour surf lesson. That also leaves time for the afternoon sun, which is intense in summer.

Plan for summer heat. December to February is the driest season, with warmer water and strong light. Sunscreen, a water bottle and a hat are not optional. The surf lesson provides sunscreen, but the rest of the day is up to you.

The driver. If you’re driving, the days that include tastings or wine aren’t for you. Pickup from your accommodation is then the deciding factor, which is why you should check it on each listing. The canoe and the surf lesson suit a self-drive better, since there’s no tasting on the program.

Read the listing to the end. Each Viator listing shows its duration and inclusions, and most also give a meeting point. Check these before you pay, especially the « confirmation not instant » note on the Discovery day, which means waiting for the operator’s reply.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to rent a car in Margaret River?

No, if you book a guided day with pickup from your accommodation or a meeting point in town, as most listings here do. Yes, if you want to visit several cellar doors at your own pace and without a set schedule. The drive from Perth takes 3 to 3.5 hours by car, up to 4 hours in traffic: a guided day mainly spares you from getting behind the wheel after a tasting. See the first outing.

How many days should you plan?

One day is enough to get a taste of the region with a single experience. To combine a wine-and-lunch day with a coastal outing, allow two days. Durations range from 2 hours (the surf lesson) to 9 hours (the food and wine day), and two long outings on the same day are hard to fit in, since several listings run between 5.5 and 7 hours.

Can you cancel an experience in Margaret River?

Most experiences in this selection can be cancelled for free. Two can’t: the 9-hour food and wine day and the canoe with lunch. Read the cancellation policy on the listing before you pay, and book those two only once your dates are fixed.

What is there to do in Margaret River without wine?

The group surf lesson, two hours with board and wetsuit provided, from €38.01 per adult, and the canoe with lunch, at €101.37, are the options without tastings in this selection. The wine days stay focused on wine, so they are a poor fit if it isn’t your thing.

Which season should you visit in?

December to February is the Australian summer: the driest season, warmer water, and heavy crowds at Christmas and New Year. The prices in this selection are checked for that window, from November 19, 2026 to January 17, 2027. The Australian winter, June to August, is advertised with lower prices, but it is wetter and quieter, and those prices were not checked here. Wildflowers are advertised from August to November, but the official page could not be read directly: don’t plan them for December.

Which experience should a first-time visitor choose?

For a first visit, the Discovery Tour combines canoe, 4×4, lunch and premium wines in 5.5 hours, in a small group, with a 4.99 rating from 2,155 reviews. If budget matters more, the 5.5-hour outing with coffee and Boranup Forest costs €107.71 per adult. Both offer free cancellation.
