8 day trips from Lisbon to Azeitão and the Arrábida coast, from €50 to €273 per person (based on 2 adults). Four wine experiences sit alongside four water activities, rated 4.84 to 4.97 out of 5. For a first pick: the private wine day at €125, or the dolphin and whale watching trip at €54.90.

Checked on on the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Lisbon makes you want to get out of the city fast. Across the Tagus, the Setúbal peninsula offers what many visitors don’t think to look for: wineries where you can taste the wines of Azeitão, a village that gave its name to a well-known cheese, and the coast of the Arrábida natural park, where the coves are best discovered from the sea. The practical problem is getting there. The train serves Setúbal; the rest of the journey is by car or on an excursion, and its travel time has not been checked against a 2026 timetable.

We looked at the excursions that leave from Lisbon or Sesimbra and kept eight: four built around wine and four on the water. If you only want one wine option, the private wine tasting from Lisbon visits three wineries in a single day. On the sea side, the dolphin and whale watching trip from Sesimbra lasts three hours and costs €54.90 per person.

The figures come from the listings checked on October 18, 2026 and apply to the window from November 1 to December 30, 2026. They can change: the listing remains the reference when you book.

Why Azeitão and the Arrábida make a day trip from Lisbon

Azeitão is not a town. It is a civil parish of the municipality of Setúbal, on the far side of the Tagus from Lisbon. The name is known to wine and cheese lovers. The village’s large estates, including the Palácio da Bacalhôa and José Maria da Fonseca, produce wines. Azeitão cheese, a local speciality, adds a food stop before the coast.

Further south, the Arrábida natural park runs along the sea. Open data sources classify it as a protected area close to Lisbon. Its coves, caves and seabed draw divers and coasteering enthusiasts, and that is where the boat trips on this list take place. Sesimbra is the departure point for the sea trips of products 5, 6 and 8.

Between the two, the Sado estuary is home to a resident group of bottlenose dolphins. One press article puts the group at around twenty individuals, without cross-checking against ICNF, Portugal’s nature conservation institute: treat that figure as indicative. The same article reports ICNF concerns about keeping a safe distance and about the number of boats present at the same time. The ban on watching at the estuary mouth, tested in 2023 from July 15 to August 30, was reported renewed in 2025: it applies to summer. It does not affect the autumn trips off Sesimbra.

For the trip, the train remains the simplest way to Setúbal. Fertagus announced a train every twenty minutes from December 15, 2024 (Observador, November 13, 2024); the current frequency has not been checked. The exact journey time and the onward trip to Azeitão or Sesimbra have not been checked against a 2026 timetable. That is one more reason to choose an excursion that handles the route in one block.

For another day out from the capital, the Sintra excursion is an alternative.

The 8 excursions compared: price, rating and availability

The table repeats the figures from the detailed listings below. Prices are per person for two travellers. Ratings are combined Viator and TripAdvisor ratings, and the number in brackets is the total of combined reviews. For a quick choice: the four wine formulas last six to nine hours, the sea trips three to four hours.

An open day only means that the product was offered that day at the time of checking. It does not guarantee a slot: the listing may be full when you book.

Three readings depending on your profile. For a wine programme with no time constraints, products 1 and 4 are private and last six and seven hours. For a tight budget with the sea, products 6 and 5 cost less than €60 per person. For a specific date in November, check product 8: it only runs from November 9 to 22. Product 2 has the widest price range, and its detail is in the listing.

1. Private wine tasting: three wineries in one day

Rating 4.92 (637 combined reviews) 6 hours €125 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation Private tour

Want to taste the wines of the Setúbal region without hunting for wineries or juggling buses? This private tour does exactly that. The guide takes your group to three wineries on the peninsula in a single day, with air-conditioned private transport from Lisbon. Pickup is at your hotel in Lisbon; the guide confirms the exact meeting point after booking. It is just you and the guide: no other travellers are added to the programme, which leaves time to compare two wines or ask about the work in the vineyard. The catch is lunch. It depends on the option you choose and is not offered on Mondays. If you want to eat on site, check before you pay. The October 18 check shows 40 open days out of the 60 in the window, at €125 per person for two travellers. This format suits couples as well as friends who want a full day of wine without driving.

  • Private group: no other travellers

2. Arrábida and Sesimbra, small group

Rating 4.84 (589 combined reviews) 9 hours €72 to €273 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation

This is the most variable format on price, from €72 to €273 per person. It is a nine-hour day in a small group, with an air-conditioned minibus and a local guide, linking the Arrábida and Sesimbra on the same day. Two wineries and six wine tastings punctuate the route. Departure is from the Hard Rock Café in Lisbon, where the guide waits. The price range runs from €72 to €273 per person for two travellers. The gap depends on the option chosen and on the date, and the check does not say which one will apply to your booking. Read the details of the option before you pay, and compare with the private version (product 3) if the budget allows. This is a shared format with other travellers, unlike the private tours. The combined rating of 4.84 from 589 reviews is solid.

3. Three wineries with lunch, private

Rating 4.85 (483 combined reviews) 7 to 9 hours €225 to €229 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation Private tour

This is the option for those who want to eat and drink without thinking about the road. Lunch is included, with alcoholic drinks and snacks, and the visit covers three wineries between the Arrábida coast and the Setúbal region. The certified guide adapts the route to the pace of the group, which avoids the fixed rhythm of large tours. An optional stop at the Christ the King statue or at the Sesimbra castle can be added, depending on your wish and the time. Pickup is at your hotel or at the port of Lisbon, and the provider confirms the exact point after booking. The rate checked is €225 to €229 per person for two travellers. It is a full day, seven to nine hours depending on the programme. The trap is in comparing prices: compare the included lunch, not only the duration. This format suits couples who want a day free of logistics, and food lovers.

4. Private Arrábida visit and market

Rating 4.95 (131 combined reviews) 7 hours €144.15 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation Private tour

This tour is built around you in the Arrábida park, with a local guide who organises the route. It includes the Christ the King statue and a visit to the Livramento market in Setúbal. That market is closed on Mondays: in that case, the guide offers another stop, so check if your start day falls on a Monday. Tastings take place with producers in the region, without a specific estate guaranteed. At €144.15 per person for two travellers, this is a promotional rate shown at the time of checking, and it may rise. The listing is open 48 days out of the 60 in the window: fewer than the private tour of product 3 (60 days), more than product 1 (40 days). It is a good choice for a day at your own pace, but the listing does not include lunch among its inclusions. It suits those who want a tailor-made programme.

5. Dolphins and whales from Sesimbra

Rating 4.92 (277 combined reviews) 3 hours €54.90 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation

This is the shortest outing in the selection and one of the most memorable. A marine biologist and a local guide sail with you off the Arrábida coast, looking for dolphins and whales. The meeting point is the Bolhas Tours marine centre in the port of Sesimbra, 100 metres before the marina. The €54.90 per person price covers the natural park fees and the environmental levy, so there are no surprises at the time of payment. No sighting is guaranteed: marine wildlife follows its own rules, and the trip knows it. Be careful not to confuse it with the Sado. The ban tested in 2023 targeted the estuary mouth, from July 15 to August 30, and press coverage from July 2025 reports it renewed. This trip leaves from Sesimbra and sails offshore, outside the estuary mouth. It suits those who only have a half day (3 hours).

6. Secret beaches and caves by boat

Rating 4.87 (115 combined reviews) 3 hours €50 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation

This boat runs along the wild beaches of the Arrábida and the caves of the natural park, with a stop for snorkelling. It is an afternoon on the water: you don’t come for a cultural programme, you come for the coast. The meeting point is the Espadarte landing stage in Sesimbra at 2:15 pm for a 2:30 pm departure, with free parking nearby. All fees and taxes are included, along with alcoholic drinks. However, according to the listing, snacks, water and non-alcoholic drinks are not included: bring your own. At €50 per person for two travellers, this is the lowest rate in the selection, and the product stays open on all 60 days of the window. This outing suits families, groups of friends, and those who don’t have a full day.

7. Coasteering in the Arrábida park

Rating 4.95 (144 combined reviews) 4 hours €65 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation

Coasteering means moving along the coast by swimming, climbing and jumping between the rocks. It lasts four hours in the Arrábida natural park, with the equipment provided: life jacket, wetsuit, harness, and a support boat that stays close by. Insurance is included. Hotel transfer is not included. If you ask, the meeting point is 150 metres from the Heritage Hotel, in front of the Hard Rock Café; otherwise, the provider gives the location after booking. At €65 per person for two travellers, this is a physically demanding activity at a reasonable price, and the window is wide: 58 days open out of 60. The required fitness level is not detailed in the data checked. If you are unsure, ask the provider before booking. This format suits sea lovers who want to move, and groups of friends who like a challenge.

8. Scuba diving introduction in the marine reserve

Rating 4.97 (121 combined reviews) 3 hours €105 per adult (2 travellers) Instant confirmation

The commercial title mentions Lisbon, but the dive centre is near the Clube Naval de Sesimbra, in the Arrábida marine reserve. It is a three-hour introduction with certified, experienced instructors, to discover underwater diving. The package includes tea and coffee, photos of the experience, a Basic Diver certificate and access to the baths, with a hot bath possible. Prerequisites were not captured: check them on the listing before you book. The combined rating is the highest in the selection, 4.97 out of 5, but the product is open only 14 days out of the 60 in the window, from November 9 to 22. Do not plan it for late December. To find the centre, go past the roundabout and then the water treatment plant: the building is on the right, with a dirt car park. At €105 per person for two travellers, it is a good first experience underwater, provided you lock in the dates early.

  • Certified, experienced instructors

Practical tips on site

The checked window runs from November 1 to December 30, 2026. Sea trips and coasteering depend on autumn weather. All products in the selection show free cancellation in search, but weather conditions were not checked one by one. Read the policy displayed on each listing when you pay.

For the train, Fertagus announced a train every twenty minutes from December 2024; the current frequency has not been checked. At peak times the trains are very crowded, especially at Pragal. Products 5, 6 and 8 meet in Sesimbra. These transfers are not included: ask the operator of the chosen outing for the time and the means of transport. Driving is also possible. Tolls and journey time are not given here, as they have not been checked against a recent open source. Excursions include transport from Lisbon for products 1, 2, 3 and 4, which avoids the problem on the wine days.

For the wineries, the Bacalhôa palace, in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, offers a visit request form with indicative slots (10:00, 11:30, 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm). The page gives neither opening hours nor tasting prices, and does not specify languages. For José Maria da Fonseca, no opening hours or prices could be verified. Confirm before you travel.

If you are aiming for the Sado dolphins, remember that the summer restriction, tested in 2023 and reported renewed in 2025, targets the estuary mouth; in 2023 it ran from July 15 to August 30. Autumn trips from Sesimbra go offshore. No sighting is guaranteed. Bring sun protection and a windproof layer, even in November, because the sea and the wind change quickly on this coast.

For food, product 1 includes a tasting of cheeses and traditional breads, depending on the option chosen. If you want to bring back a bottle, check before leaving whether the guide allows purchases and whether transport allows it: nothing in the listings says so. For tastings, drink little and keep water within reach.

Three mistakes come up often. The first is confusing the wine tour with a meal: lunch depends on the option, and for product 1 it is not offered on Mondays. The second is assuming every product is open the whole window: product 8 runs only 14 days, product 4 only 48. The third is turning up at the meeting point without having read the address. Product 7 picks up at the hotel only on request, and product 6 requires being at the port at 2:15 pm.

If the coast tempts you beyond Lisbon, our article on day trips to Sintra from Lisbon offers another way out of the capital.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best-rated excursion from Lisbon to the Arrábida?

The scuba diving introduction in the marine reserve has the highest combined rating in the selection, 4.97 out of 5, from 121 combined reviews. It is only open from November 9 to 22, that is 14 days out of 60. For a wider choice of dates, the private Arrábida visit (48 open days) and the coasteering (58 open days) are the strongest options. See the diving listing.

Can you reach Azeitão and the Arrábida by train without an excursion?

The train takes you to Setúbal: Fertagus announced a train every twenty minutes from December 15, 2024, and the current frequency has not been checked. The onward trip to Azeitão or the coast has not been checked against a 2026 timetable. You would therefore need a rental car or another means of transport to reach the wineries and the coves; the journey time has not been checked. An excursion covers this step, even if it costs more than the train.

Why does the small-group outing range from €72 to €273?

The range shown on Viator for two travellers depends on the option chosen and the date. The October 18 check does not tell which one will apply to your booking. The format stays the same: small group, air-conditioned minibus, local guide, two wineries and six tastings, nine hours of programme. Before you pay, compare the options on the listing and check what they include, especially if your budget is tight.

Can you see the Sado dolphins in November?

The restriction tested in 2023 and reported renewed in 2025 concerns the mouth of the Sado estuary; in 2023 it ran from July 15 to August 30. It does not apply in November. The Bolhas Tours trip departs from Sesimbra and watches offshore, with no guarantee of a sighting. The resident Sado group, estimated at around twenty individuals in one press article, has not been cross-checked against an official source. Treat the sighting as a bonus, not a certainty.

What happens if the sea is rough on the day planned?

All eight products show free cancellation in Viator search. Weather conditions were not checked one by one: the rule displayed on each listing applies. In autumn, sea trips and coasteering can be cancelled at the last minute, so plan a spare day in your stay before booking a sea trip.

Should you book early for the end of the year?

All eight products offer instant confirmation. Four are open 60 days out of 60 (products 2, 3, 5 and 6), product 7 is open 58 days, product 4 48 days, product 1 40 days, and product 8 only 14 (November 9 to 22). Product 7 has only two closed days in the window. Book early for products 1, 4 and 8.
