The best day trip from Las Vegas for most visitors is Grand Canyon West: 10 to 11 hours door to door, from $119 per adult for 2 travelers, rated 4.91 on 25,771 reviews. Short on time? The Hoover Dam mini tour takes 3 hours from $68. Want the Skywalk? Book the option that includes it.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

In Las Vegas, the real question is not where to go. It is how many hours you are willing to give the desert. A Grand Canyon South Rim tour picks you up at 4:40 a.m. and brings you back after dark. Valley of Fire lets you sleep until 7:30 a.m. and still be back for a 7 p.m. show. Most « best day trips » lists skip that part, along with the costs that show up only once you are on the bus: the Skywalk ticket, the driver’s tip, the national park surcharge some of your companions may owe.

So I approached this list the way you would plan it from your hotel room. I went through 649 Viator listings that leave from Las Vegas, kept only tours rated 4.7 or higher with at least 100 reviews, then picked one tour per destination. The 10 picks average 4.91 stars. For each one I checked the real price per adult for 2 travelers on every date from October 23 to December 21, 2026, the pickup time, what is included and what is not, the cancellation rule and how many days it actually runs.

If you only book one, make it the Grand Canyon West day trip with a Hoover Dam stop, the most-reviewed day trip from the city. If the Grand Canyon is already decided and you are torn between the two rims, my South Rim vs. West Rim comparison goes deeper. This page is about the bigger choice: which slice of the Southwest fits the time you have.

How to Choose a Day Trip from Las Vegas: Start with Your Clock

Road winding through red sandstone formations in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Las Vegas sits in the middle of an unusual cluster of landscapes. Red Rock Canyon is about 20 minutes from the Strip and Hoover Dam about 30 miles southeast, according to Visit Las Vegas. Valley of Fire and the Willow Beach kayak launch are about an hour away. Grand Canyon West is about 130 miles, or 2.5 hours each way. Death Valley, Zion, the Grand Canyon South Rim and Antelope Canyon sit 2 to 5 hours out. Distance sets the length of your day, and the length of your day decides what else fits in your trip.

Here is how the 10 picks sort by time budget:

The second thing to know is who runs each place, because it decides which fees apply. The South Rim, Zion and Death Valley are national parks. Grand Canyon West belongs to the Hualapai Tribe and Antelope Canyon to the Navajo Nation, each with its own rules and tickets. Valley of Fire is a Nevada state park, Red Rock Canyon is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the kayak route runs through Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and Hoover Dam is operated by the Bureau of Reclamation. That patchwork explains why a $100 surcharge applies at two stops on this list and nowhere else (more on that in the tips section).

Finally, the season. Las Vegas normal highs drop from 81°F in October to 67°F in November and 57°F in December (National Weather Service). That is the best window of the year for the low desert: Valley of Fire, Death Valley and Red Rock are comfortable instead of dangerous. The high country works the other way. The South Rim sits around 7,000 feet, and snow and icy roads are common from November (Grand Canyon Trust).

My pick by profile. First trip to Las Vegas and one free day: Grand Canyon West, with the Skywalk option if the glass bridge matters to you. A couple who wants a splurge without losing a day: the helicopter. Best value: Valley of Fire, 4.96 stars from $99 with lunch and park entry. Families with teens: the kayak trip (ages 12 and up) or the e-bike ride (ages 14 and up). Photographers: Antelope Canyon or Death Valley, if you can face the alarm clock. Limited mobility: the helicopter is not wheelchair accessible and Lower Antelope involves ladders, so a coach day to Grand Canyon West with short walks at the viewpoints is the gentler option; check with the operator before booking.

1. Grand Canyon West with a Hoover Dam Stop

Rating 4.91 (25771 reviews) 10 to 11 hours, about 3.5 hours on site $119 to $129 per adult for the Tour Only option (2 travelers) Pickup 6:20 to 6:40 a.m. Instant confirmation

This is the easiest way to stand at the Grand Canyon and still be back for dinner. Grand Canyon West is Hualapai tribal land, not part of the national park, so the $100 nonresident fee does not apply: the best Grand Canyon pick for a group that mixes Americans and visitors from abroad. Watch the option you book. The price above is « Tour Only »; on November 10, 2026, the « Hot Lunch, Skywalk » option cost $178 per adult, and the most common complaint in the reviews comes from travelers who found out on the bus that the Skywalk was extra. It runs on a large coach of up to 57 travelers, gratuities not included.

  • Eagle Point and Guano Point, with Wi-Fi on the coach
  • Photo stop near Hoover Dam on the way

2. Grand Canyon South Rim in One Long Day

Rating 4.79 (2158 reviews) 13 hours, about 3 hours at the rim $124 per adult on every date checked (2 travelers) Pickup from 4:40 a.m. Instant confirmation

This is the classic national park view, Mather Point and the Bright Angel Lodge area, for people who accept a very long day. The coach climbs about 5,000 feet out of the Mojave, and the rim is far colder than the Strip: November highs sit in the 50s and December in the 40s, so pack a warm jacket. U.S. residents’ park entry is included; non-U.S. residents aged 16 and older pay the $100 nonresident fee on site. During race week, November 18 to 22, 2026, pickup is limited to Excalibur, Park MGM or Treasure Island. The operator itself advises against booking a show that evening. Torn between the rims? Read my rim comparison.

  • Park entrance for U.S. residents included

3. Grand Canyon Helicopter with a Canyon Landing

Rating 4.85 (2755 reviews) About 2.5 hours $598.99 to $645.86 per adult (2 travelers) Self check-in at the Strip terminal Confirmation by the operator

The splurge: the Grand Canyon in a morning, back on the Strip for lunch. You fly about 45 minutes each way over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, land on a private bluff about 3,500 feet below the rim and 300 feet above the Colorado River, then share a Champagne toast. Read the rules before you pay. Refunds apply only if you cancel at least 3 full days before departure, there is no hotel pickup, an original REAL ID or passport is required, and seating follows weight and balance (travelers over 300 lb buy an extra seat). Weather cancellations happen, so avoid booking it on your last day.

  • Maximum 7 passengers per helicopter
  • Return flight along the Strip, taxes and fees included

4. Lower Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend

Rating 4.89 (8455 reviews) 14 to 15 hours $239 per adult (2 travelers) Pickup 4:50 to 5:10 a.m. Confirmation by the operator

The longest day on this list, and I would not hide it: about 4.5 hours of driving each way for two sights that photograph like nothing else in the Southwest. You cannot visit Antelope Canyon on your own. Entry requires an authorized Navajo guide, and the Navajo Nation charges $15 per person, per location, per day (Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation). This tour bundles that permit, the guided canyon walk and the Horseshoe Bend entry, which removes most of the logistics. Lower Antelope means climbing moderately steep ladders. The operator suggests a 15 to 20% gratuity for the driver-guide, and the Navajo canyon guide is tipped separately: budget for both.

  • Horseshoe Bend entry and deli lunch

5. Zion National Park in a Small Group

Rating 4.95 (521 reviews) 12 to 14 hours $148 per adult (2 travelers) 13 travelers maximum Confirmation by the operator

The best-rated of the big-park trips, and the one I would choose for a first look at Zion without a strenuous hike. The van goes through the 1.1-mile Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel and the day includes two gentle walks: a canyon overlook and the Riverside Walk toward the Narrows. Late in the year a small van has an edge: the Zion Canyon shuttle runs until November 28, 2026, then again from December 26 to January 2, and outside those dates private vehicles can use the Scenic Drive (NPS). One honest caveat from the reviews: the operator also runs Chinese-language departures, and a few English speakers felt the commentary was thin.

  • Park entrance for U.S. residents included
  • Easy to moderate walking, deli lunch

6. Hoover Dam Mini Tour in 3 Hours

Rating 4.87 (5519 reviews) 3 hours $68 to $76 per adult (2 travelers) 14-passenger van Instant confirmation

The answer to « what can I do in Vegas if I only have a morning? » In 3 hours you drive through Boulder City, stop at a Lake Mead lookout and the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge viewpoint, then walk on top of the dam, and you are back by the pool in the early afternoon. Know what you are not getting: the tours inside the dam are not included. The Bureau of Reclamation sells the Guided Dam Tour for $40, on site only and first come, first served, and the Guided Power Plant Tour for $25 per adult; the visitor center closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day (usbr.gov). Pickup is at a Strip hotel near yours, confirmed by text the evening before.

7. Valley of Fire in a Small Group

Rating 4.96 (4021 reviews) 6 hours $99 to $109 per adult (2 travelers) Pickup 7:50 to 8:10 a.m. Confirmation by the operator

My value pick: the best rating-to-price ratio on this list, a civilized pickup time, and you are back by mid-afternoon. Valley of Fire is Nevada’s 40,000-acre park of red Aztec sandstone, about an hour from the Strip, and its season is exactly the one you are probably booking for. Many of its trails, including White Domes and the Fire Wave area, close every year from May 15 to September 30 after heat-related rescues and deaths (Nevada State Parks). The stops cover Beehive Rock, the Atlatl Rock petroglyphs, Seven Sisters and Rainbow Vista. A few reviewers mention weak air conditioning or audio in some vans; that is the only recurring complaint.

8. Death Valley in a Small Group

Rating 4.96 (739 reviews) 11 to 12 hours $175 to $198 per adult (2 travelers) Runs 39 of the 60 days checked Instant confirmation

Death Valley is a November-to-March trip. In summer, highs routinely reach 115 to 120°F and rangers advise staying within a 10-minute walk of an air-conditioned car (NPS); in late fall it is a comfortable desert day. This owner-operated tour of 12 travelers or fewer drives about 2 to 2.5 hours each way via Pahrump and covers a lot of ground: Rhyolite ghost town, the Mesquite dunes, Badwater Basin at 282 feet below sea level, Artist’s Palette, Zabriskie Point and Dante’s View. Death Valley is not one of the parks with the $100 nonresident fee, and the entrance is included. It does not run daily, so pick your date first and plan the rest of the week around it.

  • Park entrance fee and all taxes included
  • Breakfast or lunch, depending on the season

9. Emerald Cave Kayak Trip in Black Canyon

Rating 4.92 (5399 reviews) 5 to 6 hours with transfers $88 per adult for the self-drive option (2 travelers) Ages 12 and up Instant confirmation

A good reset after a long canyon day: you paddle the Colorado River below Hoover Dam, between the walls of Black Canyon, from Willow Beach Marina in Arizona, about an hour from the Strip. Set expectations right: Emerald Cave is a small grotto where the water glows green, not a cave you paddle through. The price depends on the option. Self-drive was $88 per adult; the hotel-pickup option cost $139 on November 10, 2026, and adds the Lake Mead entrance fee, which is otherwise $25 per vehicle at cashless fee stations (NPS). The times shown on the listing are launch times; hotel pickup starts 60 to 90 minutes earlier.

10. Red Rock Canyon by E-Bike

Rating 4.99 (1950 reviews) About 4 hours 15 minutes $142 per adult (2 travelers) Runs 48 of the 60 days checked Confirmation by the operator

The highest rating on this list, and the closest landscape to the Strip. You ride about 17 miles on the one-way Scenic Drive with a guide, and the motor takes care of the climbs. There is a practical argument too: from October 1 to May 31, driving the Scenic Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. requires a timed-entry reservation (BLM), and the tour takes that chore off your list. Departures are at 10 a.m. through November 30 and 11 a.m. from December 1, from the visitor center or with optional pickup at select Strip hotels 30 to 60 minutes earlier.

  • E-bike, helmet, snack and water

Practical Tips: Fees, Tipping, Weather and Race Week

The $100 nonresident fee: who pays and who does not

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident, this does not cost you anything extra. Since January 1, 2026, the National Park Service charges each non-U.S. resident aged 16 and older a $100 nonresident fee on top of regular entry at 11 parks, including Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon (NPS). On this list, that means the South Rim and Zion tours, where the operator collects it on site, not at booking. Bring a U.S. passport, a state-issued driver’s license or ID, or a Permanent Resident card to show you are exempt. If you are traveling with friends from abroad, Grand Canyon West, the helicopter landing, Valley of Fire, Red Rock, Death Valley, Lake Mead and Hoover Dam are all outside the surcharge. Driving yourself? A valid America the Beautiful pass covers entrance and nonresident fees for everyone in your private vehicle. The U.S. resident annual pass costs $80; the nonresident one costs $250. Fee-free days now apply to U.S. residents only.

Tipping and what the price leaves out

Gratuities are excluded on all 10 picks. Several operators suggest 15 to 20% of the tour price for the driver-guide, and 10 to 20% is the usual range for guided tours (Visit Southern Utah). On a $129 Grand Canyon West seat, that is roughly $19 to $26 per person. On Antelope Canyon days, the Navajo canyon guide is tipped separately. The other extras to plan for: the Skywalk and lunch on pick #1 unless you chose that option, the inside dam tours at Hoover Dam, and the Lake Mead entrance if you drive to the kayak launch.

Clocks and time zones

Nevada runs on Pacific Time. Arizona, home to Grand Canyon West, the South Rim and Page, stays on Mountain Standard Time all year. After daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Arizona is one hour ahead of Las Vegas; before that, they share the same clock. The Navajo Nation, where Antelope Canyon sits, does observe daylight saving time, and Utah is always one hour ahead of Vegas. Your guide manages slot times, but it explains why the clock on your phone jumps during the day (Grand Canyon West FAQ).

F1 race week: November 17 to 25, 2026

The Las Vegas Grand Prix runs Thursday, November 19 to Saturday, November 21, 2026, and Strip roads close in the evenings on race days (News 3 Las Vegas). Several operators suspend pickups at The Venetian, Bellagio and Horseshoe from November 17 to 25, and the South Rim tour limits pickup to three hotels. If your trip overlaps, check the pickup point in your confirmation and plan a short taxi ride to it. In town for the race? My guide to off-track activities during the Grand Prix covers what else fits around the sessions.

What to pack

More water than the single bottle most tours hand out, a sun hat, a warm layer for the South Rim or Zion, and closed-toe shoes. Add an original REAL ID or passport if you booked the helicopter, and a credit card if you drive to the kayak launch: Lake Mead fee stations are cashless. Leave the evening free after any tour of 12 hours or more, since return times slip with traffic and weather.

Should you drive yourself instead?

For the short trips, it can make sense. Hoover Dam parking is $10 per vehicle in the Nevada garage, Valley of Fire costs $15 per non-Nevada vehicle, and Red Rock needs a timed-entry slot on Recreation.gov. For the South Rim, Zion and Antelope Canyon, a tour saves you 8 to 9 hours behind the wheel, and Antelope Canyon requires a Navajo guide anyway. Still deciding how many days to give the city itself? My Las Vegas 2026 guide covers the Sphere, new hotels and shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do a day trip to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas?

Yes, in three ways. Grand Canyon West is about 130 miles away, a 10 to 11 hour day from $119 per adult for 2 travelers. The South Rim takes 13 hours with about 3 hours at the rim, $124 per adult, plus $100 for non-U.S. residents aged 16 and older. A helicopter with a canyon landing takes about 2.5 hours, from $598.99 per adult. See the Grand Canyon West tour.

What is the best day trip within 2 hours of Las Vegas?

Four picks sit within about an hour of the Strip: Red Rock Canyon (about 20 minutes), Hoover Dam (about 30 miles), Valley of Fire and the Emerald Cave kayak launch (about an hour each). For value, Valley of Fire wins: 4.96 stars on 4,021 reviews from $99 per adult, lunch and park entry included. See the Valley of Fire tour.

Do U.S. citizens pay the $100 national park fee?

No. The $100 nonresident fee, in place since January 1, 2026, applies only to non-U.S. residents aged 16 and older at 11 parks, including Grand Canyon and Zion. U.S. citizens and residents pay the regular entrance, which the South Rim and Zion tours include. Carry a U.S. passport, a state driver’s license or ID, or a Permanent Resident card as proof. Read the fee details.

Grand Canyon West or South Rim: which one from Las Vegas?

Grand Canyon West is closer (about 2.5 hours each way), has the Skywalk, and is free of the national park surcharge because it is Hualapai land. The South Rim is the classic national park panorama, but means a 4:40 a.m. pickup, a 13-hour day and cold weather in winter. My full rim comparison goes through every option.

How much should I tip on a day trip from Las Vegas?

Plan on 15 to 20% of the tour price for the driver-guide, the range several operators on this list suggest; gratuities are not included in any of the 10 prices. On an Antelope Canyon day, also tip the Navajo canyon guide separately. On a helicopter flight, ask at check-in how the operator handles it. See the full tipping notes.

Do I need a reservation for Red Rock Canyon?

Yes, if you drive the Scenic Drive between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from October 1 to May 31: you need a timed-entry reservation on Recreation.gov. A guided tour handles access for you. The e-bike tour on this list rides about 17 miles of the drive and holds a 4.99 rating on 1,950 reviews. See the Red Rock e-bike tour.

Is Death Valley too hot to visit from Las Vegas?

In summer, yes for most people: highs routinely hit 115 to 120°F, and the park service advises staying close to an air-conditioned car. From November to March it is a comfortable day trip. The small-group tour on this list ran on 39 of the 60 days checked between October 23 and December 21, 2026, so book your date early. See the Death Valley tour.
