The best day trips from Mexico City start at $49.00 per adult for two travelers. Five of the eight tours go to Teotihuacan, and the two Tolantongo hot-spring days run 13 to 16 hours. Prices are 2026 snapshots, not 2027 prices.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices and availability). Ratings combine Viator and TripAdvisor averages.

Mexico City is a week’s worth of museums, markets and neighborhoods, and a day outside it often changes the trip. Teotihuacan is the obvious answer, and it is well represented here. So are a volcano trek, a balloon flight and two very long days at the Tolantongo hot springs. We went through the Viator catalogue for tours that leave the city, kept only products rated 4.7 or higher with at least 100 reviews, and ended with eight. The highest-rated tour on the list is the three-pyramid day with hotel pickup and lunch at La Gruta, with 4.96 from 785 reviews. You can read about it as tour 3 below.

Read the list with one warning in mind: it is narrower than the title suggests. Five of the eight products are built on Teotihuacan, two are Tolantongo hot-spring tours, and one is a volcano trek. We did not lower the quality bar to make the list look wider, so Puebla, Taxco and Cuernavaca, the nearby destinations a traveler might expect, have no product here. That is a choice about the ratings we accept, not a claim that those places lack good day trips.

The prices come from a check on October 11, 2026, for two adult travelers and for departures from October 25 to December 23, 2026. The title looks ahead to 2027, but every figure in this article is a 2026 snapshot, not a 2027 price. Before you book, check the price and availability for your own dates on the tour page. All eight products use instant confirmation on Viator, so a booking is confirmed without waiting for the operator, and all eight offer free cancellation: a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure.

Read the list by time first. The shortest fixed-length day is the shared Teotihuacan shuttle, at 5 hours 30 minutes, while the private Teotihuacan tour can run as short as 1 hour. The longest is the full-day Tolantongo tour, at 14 to 16 hours. Their prices sit close together, at $139.99 and $134.00 per adult, so the difference in length is far larger than the difference in price.

Why Mexico City Makes a Good Base for Day Trips

Mexico City sits at about 2,240 meters, or 7,350 feet. The city’s official altitude guidance says symptoms usually start within 6 to 24 hours of arrival, and it advises drinking water and limiting alcohol. That is why we would plan the most demanding day on this list, such as the 4:20 a.m. start to the Tolantongo hot springs or the dawn balloon flight, for the second or third day of a stay rather than the first.

Five of the eight products are built on Teotihuacan. They differ mainly in pace and in what is added to the visit: a shared shuttle, a private car, a three-pyramid day with lunch, a day that adds the Guadalupe Shrine and Tlatelolco, and a balloon flight with breakfast. Read the comparison as a choice between styles of the same site rather than as eight different destinations.

Price explains less than time does here: the balloon flight costs the most per adult at $151.38, and the volcano trek costs $134.61, yet the balloon flight runs up to 8 hours and the trek 9. The cheapest option, the shared shuttle at $49.00, runs 5 hours 30 minutes.

The 8 Best Day Trips From Mexico City, Ranked by Time Commitment

Source: Viator

1. Teotihuacan Private Tour

Rating 4.95 (2125 reviews) 1 to 5 hours (variable) From $139.99 per adult (2 travelers) Private

Choose this one when the day should follow your pace rather than a shuttle timetable. A private car collects you at your hotel, and the length varies from 1 to 5 hours, so the visit can stay short if the altitude takes its toll. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the listing includes a tasting of pulque, tequila and mezcal, which makes the drive part of the trip. At $139.99 per adult it costs close to three times the shared shuttle, so the price has to buy something: flexibility and no other passengers. Lunch is not included, so eat before you leave or pack something. Before you book, read the Viator page for the fees and taxes the supplier lists separately.

  • Hotel pickup in a private car
  • Tasting of pulque, tequila and mezcal
  • Full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure

2. Teotihuacan Pyramids, Shared Shuttle

Rating 4.86 (9967 reviews) 5 hours 30 minutes From $49.00 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the lowest price on the list at $49.00 per adult for two travelers, and one of the most-reviewed products here, with 9,967 reviews at 4.86. The shuttle is shared, and it leaves from several central pickup points rather than from your hotel, so check which point is closest to you. Morning departures run from about 7:45 to 8:15 a.m., and afternoon departures from about 12:45 to 1:00 p.m. Choose the morning if you want the most time at the site, and the afternoon if a later start suits you. The fixed length of 5 hours 30 minutes covers the round trip, an in-person guide in the archaeological zone, entrance, water, coffee and a cereal bar. The trade-off is simple: you give up the flexibility of a private car for the lowest price on the list.

  • Shared shuttle from central pickup points
  • Guide, entrance, water, coffee and a cereal bar included
  • Full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure

3. Three Pyramids, Hotel Pickup and Lunch

Rating 4.96 (785 reviews) 7 hours 30 minutes From $71.38 per adult (2 travelers) Hotel pickup

This tour has the highest rating on the list, 4.96 from 785 reviews, and its title promises three pyramids, hotel pickup and lunch. The hotel pickup is the main reason to choose it over the shared shuttle, because you do not walk to a meeting point. The day lasts a fixed 7 hours 30 minutes and includes the entrance ticket, a licensed in-person guide, bottled water, umbrellas or hats, and an air-conditioned vehicle. The title promises lunch at La Gruta, but the listing excludes food and drinks at the restaurant, so budget for them on top of the price and check the Viator page for what the lunch covers. The range from $71.38 to $76.56 per adult reflects the option or the date, so check the total on the Viator page before you book. For a couple who want a guide and hotel pickup without the cost of a private car, it sits between the shuttle and the private tour.

  • Hotel pickup in Mexico City
  • Entrance ticket and licensed in-person guide included
  • Food and drinks at the restaurant excluded

4. Balloon Flight and Pyramids

Rating 4.94 (8039 reviews) 2 to 8 hours (variable) From $151.38 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the most expensive product on the list at $151.38 per adult, and the only balloon flight on it. The balloon is shared, and the length ranges from 2 to 8 hours depending on the option. The meeting point is about five minutes from the Pemex Pirámides gas station, and the exact spot arrives by message the day before. If you choose an option with hotel transport, the pickup falls between about 4:30 and 5:00 a.m., so the morning starts early. The package includes coffee or tea with cookies and a toast with sparkling wine at the end of the flight. The full option adds a Mexican breakfast in a natural cave and a visit to the pyramids, which overlaps with the Teotihuacan tours above. The supplier charges extra for passengers over 220 pounds (100 kilograms), so check that rule before you book. One date in the window is unavailable (59 of 60 days), so pick your date early.

5. Teotihuacan, Guadalupe Shrine and Tlatelolco

Rating 4.80 (12410 reviews) 9 hours From $55.25 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the most-reviewed tour on the list, with 12,410 reviews and a 4.80 rating, and it covers three sites in one day: Teotihuacan, the Guadalupe Shrine and Tlatelolco. The price starts at $55.25 per adult and reaches $65.00 on some options, so check the one you select. The meeting point depends on the departure: MIGA Cafe at 8:20 a.m., or the Amigo Tours Downtown point at 7:30 a.m. Entrance to Teotihuacan is included. A buffet lunch and a tequila tasting come with the selected shared departures, while the private option does not include lunch. It is the only product on the list that visits a shrine, so it suits travelers who want the city’s religious history alongside the pyramids. Check the calendar too. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe falls on Saturday, December 12, 2026, and crowds at the basilica build from the Friday night before, so a departure near that date may land on the busiest days.

  • Entrance to Teotihuacan included
  • Buffet lunch and tequila tasting on selected shared departures
  • Meeting point at MIGA Cafe or Amigo Tours Downtown

6. Volcano Trek

Rating 4.76 (124 reviews) 9 hours From $134.61 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

Check this one before anything else. At 4.76 from 124 reviews, the trek has the lowest rating and the smallest review count on the list, so read the most recent reviews before you commit. It also depends on volcanic conditions we could not confirm for 2026. The national alert page returned a 404 error on the day of our check, and the latest alert level we found is Amarillo Fase 2, from a January 2025 report. Do not book on the assumption that the trek runs as usual. Ask the operator to confirm it runs on your date and what happens if the park closes. When it does run, the product includes private transport from the meeting point in front of the Michoacán market, trekking poles, a backpack with lunch, and guides who carry the safety equipment, according to the supplier. Gratuities are excluded. If the status checks out, it is the only product here that is a hike rather than a ruin or a soak.

  • Private transport from the Michoacán market
  • Trekking poles, backpack and lunch included
  • Confirm the trek is running before you book

7. Early Tolantongo Hot Springs

Rating 4.92 (679 reviews) 13 hours From $134.61 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the shorter of the two Tolantongo tours, at 13 hours, and the one for people who want the water more than the sightseeing. Pickup falls between 4:20 and 5:00 a.m. in the supplier’s zone, usually near Roma or the Angel of Independence, and the exact point is confirmed the day before. Park tickets and an air-conditioned vehicle are included, so you do not need a car or to buy park tickets yourself. Lunch is not included. The self-travel route is long: independent guides put the bus at about four hours, with a change in Ixmiquilpan, and the car at about three hours, and they recommend travelling by daylight. We leave out the park’s entrance fee and opening hours here, because the most recent guide we could find was last updated in March 2023, and we could not confirm either figure for 2026.

  • Park tickets and air-conditioned vehicle included
  • Pickup between 4:20 and 5:00 a.m.
  • Lunch not included

8. Full-Day Tour of the Waters of Tolantongo

Rating 4.83 (1569 reviews) 14 to 16 hours (variable) From $134.00 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the longest day on the list, 14 to 16 hours depending on the option. It starts at the Angel of Independence roundabout, on the side nearest the Sheraton María Isabel hotel. The package covers the logistics: private transport, a Mexican breakfast buffet with vegetarian options, and a small backpack with a towel, headlamp, wet wipes and a water bottle. Sunscreen is included, and snacks come at the end of the day. Lunch is paid separately from the on-site menu, so budget for it in cash: a guide last updated in March 2023 says the park takes no card payments and has no ATM. Bring water shoes, since the wet stone is slippery, and expect weak mobile signal. Confirm these points with the operator, because the guide predates 2026. The price is almost the same as the early tour, $134.00 against $134.61 per adult, but the day runs one to three hours longer. Choose it if you want the hot springs to fill the whole day rather than the early start.

  • Private transport and Mexican breakfast buffet
  • Small backpack with towel, headlamp and wet wipes
  • Lunch from the on-site menu paid separately

Practical Tips on the Ground

Teotihuacan admission and hours. A guide updated July 17, 2026, which says it was checked with INAH, gives admission for foreign visitors at about 210 Mexican pesos. Mexican nationals pay 105 pesos. The same guide gives opening hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, with the last entry at 4:30 p.m. Free entry on Sundays applies to Mexican nationals and foreign residents of Mexico with proof, not to tourists. Build your day around the last entry, not the closing time.

Climbing the pyramids. Sources disagree. Some report restrictions on the upper stairs of the Sun and Moon pyramids, while other guides still describe a climb. Do not plan your day around climbing. Ask on arrival whether the upper stairs are open, and treat access to the Pyramid of the Moon as unconfirmed for 2026.

Tipping. Pay in pesos, in small bills. A tipping guide updated July 8, 2026 suggests 100 pesos per person for a group tour guide, about $5.75, and 300 to 600 pesos per person for a private full-day tour, about $17 to $35. A Mexican retailer’s blog gives a range of $5 to $10 per person for a full-day tour. We found no source for balloon flights or hot springs, so ask the operator.

Tolantongo logistics. If you travel on your own, a guide last updated in March 2023 puts the bus at about four hours, with a change in Ixmiquilpan, and the car at about three. Plan to travel by daylight. The two Tolantongo tours above include transport, which removes that step. If you want the early start, the early Tolantongo departure on Viator collects you between 4:20 and 5:00 a.m.

Festival dates in the window. The cempasúchil flower festival on Paseo de la Reforma runs from October 18 to November 1, 2026. The Mega Procesión de las Catrinas takes place on Sunday, October 25, the first day of the price window, and the grand Día de Muertos parade on Saturday, October 31, at 2:00 p.m. The city’s official guide gives these dates. Cemetery vigils take place on the nights of November 1 and 2, according to a Mexican news guide to the holidays.

December and the basilica. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe falls on Saturday, December 12, 2026, and crowds build from the Friday night. In December 2025 the basilica drew about 12.8 million visitors over December 11 and 12, according to a report on the record crowd, which also notes that basilica admission is free. Metro Line 6 stops at La Villa-Basílica.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which day trip from Mexico City gives the best value?

The shared Teotihuacan shuttle is the lowest price on this list, at $49.00 per adult for two travelers. It runs 5 hours 30 minutes, is rated 4.86 from 9,967 reviews, and includes a guide and entrance. If you want more flexibility, the private tour starts at $139.99 per adult, and the three-pyramid day with hotel pickup starts at $71.38. See the shared shuttle.

Are these prices for 2027?

No. Every price was checked on October 11, 2026, for two adult travelers and for departures from October 25 to December 23, 2026. The title looks ahead to 2027, but the figures are a 2026 snapshot. Check the price for your own dates on the Viator page before you book, because prices and availability change.

Can you climb the pyramids at Teotihuacan?

Sources disagree. Some describe restrictions on the upper stairs of the Sun and Moon pyramids, and others still describe a climb, so we do not promise one. Ask at the site on arrival whether the upper stairs are open, and do not plan a trip around climbing. The access status of the Pyramid of the Moon is also one we could not confirm for 2026.

Is the volcano trek running?

We could not confirm it. The national volcano alert page returned a 404 error on the day we checked, and the latest alert level we found is Amarillo Fase 2, from a January 2025 report. Before you book, ask the operator whether the trek is running on your date and what happens if the park closes. See the trek.

Why are five of the eight tours to Teotihuacan?

At our quality bar of a 4.7 rating and at least 100 reviews, our check of the Viator catalogue found no product that departs from Mexico City for Puebla, Taxco or Cuernavaca. We did not lower the threshold to add variety, so the list concentrates on Teotihuacan and Tolantongo. The comparison table shows what each tour covers, so you can judge whether the list fits the kind of day you want.

How much should I tip on these tours?

For a group tour, a tipping guide suggests 100 pesos per person, about $5.75. For a private full-day tour, the range is 300 to 600 pesos per person, about $17 to $35. Pay in pesos, in small bills. For balloon flights and hot-spring tours we found no source, so ask the operator what is customary.
