Christmas in Málaga 2026 centres on calle Larios, where the show ran at 6:30 pm, 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm in the 2025-2026 edition. The lights were switched on on Friday 28 November 2025 and the show ran until 4 January 2026. For 2026, the press announces Friday 27 November, but the city council has not confirmed it: check malaga.eu/navidad before you book.

Checked on against the official sources cited (Ayuntamiento de Málaga announcements, Junta de Andalucía, AEMET).

Málaga changes mood from late November. The city is lit up on the scale of a capital, with more than 2.7 million LED points spread across around 500 streets in the neighbourhoods. Its end-of-year programme mixes shows the city council describes as free, a municipal belén (nativity scene), neighbourhood concerts and folk festivities such as the Verdiales or the Cabalgata de Reyes. This guide separates what is official and dated from what third parties still announce, because the council has not yet published the 2026-2027 calendar.

Calendar: what is official and what still needs confirming

The reference calendar is that of the 2025-2026 edition, published by the Ayuntamiento de Málaga in its announcements of November and December 2025 and January 2026. For 2026-2027, only third-party sources give dates. They appear in the second table, with their status, and are not presented as settled.

The rule is simple: only an Ayuntamiento announcement counts. In 2025, the council presented the scheme on 7 November, then reminded people of the switch-on date on 21 and 27 November. Watch the page malaga.eu/navidad from that period onwards, and remember that the dates and status in the second table may change.

The street of the light show

Free 2026 switch-on announced for 27 Nov. (not confirmed) December: average low 8.9 °C 2025-2026 showtimes: 6:30 pm, 8:30 pm, 10:00 pm

Calle Larios, a pedestrian street in the historic centre, hosts the « Natividad de luz » show on every evening it runs. The 2025-2026 edition had 16 stars, 32 side columns and 32 light trails, synchronised with the music. This set replaces the angels that filled the street for three years, so a returning visitor will not see the same show. The city’s 2025 lighting cost €1,525,885.07 including VAT, for more than 2.7 million LED points. The municipal announcement of 7 November 2025 sets out the scheme.

Highlights

  • A show that the official 2025-2026 announcements present as free.
  • Three showings each evening in 2025-2026, at 6:30 pm, 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm, so you can pick the slot that suits you.
  • Lights that last: general lighting stays on until 2:00 am on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and the eves of holidays.
Pixidia tip: on show nights the street fills between 6:30 pm and 10:00 pm. Choose your viewing spot before the showtime you want, rather than arriving in the middle of the show.

To see the lights from the road rather than on foot, Viator offers the « Christmas Lights and Night Tour of Málaga by Electric Car ». You drive a Citroën Ami yourself for 90 minutes, following a guide in a lead vehicle. The route passes the main monuments and viewpoints, with a stop at the Gibralfaro castle. The driver must be over 25 and hold a valid licence. For the window announced from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, availability is open on all 41 days of the calendar, with a 6:00 pm departure. The price checked is €80 per person, so €160 for two adults, on six dates checked. The council has not confirmed these dates.

The cathedral and its video mapping

« El Pescador de sueños », projected onto the cathedral

Free according to the council From 29 Nov. to 4 Jan. (2025-2026) 8 to 9 minutes per show 7:00 pm, 8:30 pm, 10:00 pm

The cathedral video mapping has an official name, « El Pescador de sueños ». It is produced by Firefly Events in collaboration with the Obispado, and relies on an 80,000-lumen projection and 30,000 W. In 2025-2026, showings were scheduled at 7:00 pm, 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm, from 29 November to 4 January, except on 24 and 31 December. The municipal announcement of 3 December 2025 sets out this programme. The announcements place access on calle Molina Lario and mention no tickets.

Highlights

  • A dated, public programme, which avoids the guesswork of guidebooks.
  • A show that can be combined with the calle Larios one on the same evening, in the heart of the historic centre.
  • A short projection, easy to fit between two visits.
Pixidia tip: do not rely on the 8:00 pm time some guides give. The official announcement schedules the second showing for 8:30 pm.

Belén, concerts and Christmas markets

Municipal belén, animations and markets

Free 6 Dec. to 6 Jan. (2025-2026) 73 nacimientos recorded 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm

The municipal belén (nativity scene) is set up in the courtyard of the Ayuntamiento. The announcement of 3 December 2025 gave an opening on Friday 5 December at 6:00 pm and 73 nacimientos (nativity scenes), listed in a guide available at belenes.malaga.eu. Visits were scheduled from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The Carmen Thyssen museum’s nativity scene was, for its part, due to open on 27 November 2025 at 7:00 pm, according to an announcement of 25 November.

Neighbourhood animations follow a steady rhythm. The programme the council announced on 3 December 2025 included the « Música en Navidad » cycle on the Plaza de la Constitución, from 20 to 29 December, with the Banda Municipal de Música on 20 December at 7:00 pm. Zambombas, traditional Andalusian Christmas singing sessions, were announced for 12, 13, 17, 18 and 19 December 2025 at 7:00 pm at three sites in the centre. The 2026 programme is not yet published: these dates are reference points only.

Christmas markets do not appear in the municipal announcements, and their dates come from third-party listings. For 2026-2027, Festivales de España lists the Paseo del Parque market: 96 stalls, from 27 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, free entry, with approximate hours of 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. The Muelle Uno village, at the port, has end dates that differ between sources (6 or 11 January for the 2025-2026 edition). No official source settles it, so do not rely on an end date.

What you need to know

  • Opening hours of associations’ nativity scenes are not always published by the council: check before you go.
  • An interactive district belén at calle Pacífico 54 has two announcements with different hours: check on site.
  • The giant Kings move through the centre (Melchor on calle Alcazabilla, Gaspar on Plaza Félix Sáenz, Baltasar on calle Compañía, according to the December 2025 announcement).

Cabalgata de Reyes and Verdiales: the two big end-of-year events

Cabalgata de Reyes: departs from the Alcazaba, 5 January

Free entry not specified by the council Monday 5 January 2026 13 floats, about 1,000 performers Departs 6:00 pm, arrives around 7:00 pm

The 2026 Cabalgata de Reyes ran on Monday 5 January, departing the Alcazaba at 6:00 pm, one hour later than planned on the AEMET forecast, and arriving at the Ayuntamiento around 7:00 pm. The procession had 13 floats, including 3 royal and 10 accompanying floats, about 1,000 performers and about 20,000 kg of sweets. The municipal announcement of 6 January 2026 sets out the route and times. It does not say whether the parade is free, so free entry is not stated here.

Traffic builds early that day. Access to the Cortina del Muelle is closed from 12:00 pm, and several central streets (calle Córdoba, Alameda de Colón, Plaza General Torrijos, calle Molina Lario, Puente de la Esperanza) are closed from 3:00 pm. The council recommends public transport. For 2027, a third-party guide gives 5 January, with no time or route published: the council has not published the 2027 route, so do not reuse the 2026 one without confirmation.

Verdiales, the folk festival of 28 December

The Verdiales, the city’s main festival (fiesta mayor), was scheduled for Sunday 28 December 2025, from 12:00 pm, at the Andrés Jiménez Díaz park (Puerto de la Torre). The municipal announcement of 17 December 2025 listed twenty-eight pandas (folk groups), €34,910 in prizes and a municipal subsidy of €125,000. 28 December 2026 falls on a Monday, and no official announcement exists as of 23 October 2026: the 2025 format is a reference, not a guarantee.

Getting to Málaga: airport, train and taxi

From Málaga-Costa del Sol airport, a taxi is the direct option, and the municipal tariffs of March 2026 apply. The table below gives the fares relevant to a Christmas visitor. Night supplements (€2.23 between midnight and 6:00 am for tariffs 2, 3, 5 and 9) and luggage supplements (€0.58 per bag) are added when they apply.

Taxi fares from and to Málaga airport, municipal tariffs of March 2026 (VAT included)
TariffWhen and from whereFlag fallAirport supplement
Tariff 1From the centre, weekdays 6:00 am to 10:00 pm€4.61€6.49 if the journey ends at the airport
Tariff 4From the airport, weekdays 6:00 am to 10:00 pm€18.24Not applied when leaving the airport
Tariff 5From the airport, tariff 2 hours (nights and weekends)€22.48Not applied when leaving the airport

Source: Málaga urban and interurban fares, updated to March 2026 (municipal PDF), checked on 23 October 2026.

A flag fall of €18.24 looks higher than some guides’ figures: Spain.info gives €17.37 and a €6.27 supplement, but those figures predate the March 2026 update. The municipal PDF is the reference. The Cercanías C1 train links the airport to the centre for €1.80 to €2.70 according to Spain.info, and the express bus costs €4. These fares are not dated. For the C1, no frequency has been checked, and night times could not be verified with Renfe or EMT: check them before you travel.

Kiwitaxi offers transfers from Málaga airport (see Kiwitaxi transfers). We have not checked its prices for this article: compare them with the official fare in the table.

The centre is best explored on foot. Calle Larios is pedestrian, and parking is difficult on show nights. Mobility announcements also list the Camas and Tejón y Rodríguez car parks among the access restrictions on 5 January 2026.

Weather and crowds: what to plan for

December is mild in Málaga, with an average of 13.2 °C at the airport, but evenings stay cool and the city is full over the holidays. The averages below come from the airport, which remains the reference station.

Source: Junta de Andalucía, Oficina del Dato (EPO Navidad 2025) for the first two rows, and municipal announcement of 9 February 2026 for the Málaga city row, checked on 23 October 2026.

Read these figures for what they are: the province is full over the holidays. During Christmas week 2025 it topped 80% hotel occupancy five days out of seven, peaking at 87.0% on 31 December. Book early, especially for late December, and choose a neighbourhood served by train or bus if budget matters.

Is Málaga worth the detour at Christmas?

Yes, if you come for the lights and a mild climate; no, if you are after snow or an ice rink. The calle Larios show and the cathedral video mapping are free according to the council’s announcements, December averages 13.2 °C at the airport, and no official ice rink has been found. The downside is the crowds: the province topped 80% hotel occupancy five days out of seven during Christmas week 2025. The 2026-2027 dates are still to be confirmed.

The pros

  • A light show on calle Larios and a video mapping on the cathedral, both presented as free by the council in 2025-2026.
  • A music programme spread over several weeks: zambombas, pastorales (nativity plays) and concerts by the Banda Municipal.
  • Mild weather for the season, with an average of 13.2 °C at the airport in December.
  • Folk festivities, such as the Verdiales (28 December in 2025) and the Cabalgata (5 January 2026).
  • Simple access from the airport, with a taxi at the official tariff.

The cons

  • The 2026-2027 dates are not yet confirmed by the council.
  • Crowds are heavy on show nights and at weekends.
  • The province is very busy during Christmas week, with over 80% hotel occupancy five days out of seven in 2025.
  • Parking is difficult in the centre, and calle Larios is pedestrian.
  • Evenings are cool, and the liveliest activity is concentrated on a few nights.

Depending on your profile

  • Families: the municipal belén, presented as free, the calle Larios show is easy to enjoy as a family, and Alice Christmas costs €11.50 for ages 3 to 12, free under 3.
  • Couples: the cathedral video mapping and the calle Larios show fit into the same evening, in the heart of the historic centre.
  • Tight budget: most of the programme is free according to the council, the garden costs €8.50 for adults on 50% days, and the C1 train links the airport to the centre for €1.80 to €2.70 (undated fare).
  • First-timers: plan one evening for calle Larios, another for the cathedral, and a day for the centre and the markets.
  • Folk culture fans: the Verdiales on 28 December and the Cabalgata on 5 January are the two big folk events of the end of the year, and their 2026 dates remain to be confirmed.
  • Snow or ice-rink fans: Málaga is not the right destination, since no official ice rink was found for 2025-2026.

If you are weighing up several illuminated cities, compare with Christmas in Lisbon 2026, with Christmas in London 2026, or with the Kraków Christmas market 2026. Málaga stands out mainly for its mild December climate and its folk festivities at the end of the year.

What other guides don’t tell you

The French and Spanish guides we read sometimes repeat information that has no year or has since become wrong. Here are six facts checked against official sources, missing or wrong elsewhere.

  • General lighting stays on until 2:00 am on Thursdays. The municipal announcement of 7 November 2025 has midnight on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and 2:00 am on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and the eves of holidays. Electric Car Tour writes « Monday to Thursday until midnight », which is wrong for Thursday (announcement of 7 Nov. 2025, consulted 23 October 2026).
  • The cathedral video mapping has an official name and a dated schedule. « El Pescador de sueños » ran at 7:00 pm, 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm in 2025-2026. Visitanddo gives 7 pm, 8 pm and 10 pm, with no name or year (announcement of 3 Dec. 2025, consulted 23 October 2026).
  • The botanical garden has half-price days. For 2026-2027, the organiser gives €8.50 for adults and €6.50 for children on 30 November, 9, 14, 21 and 28 December and 6 January. The guides we read only give approximate ranges (lucesdelaconcepcion.es, consulted 23 October 2026).
  • The airport taxi flag fall is more recent than in the guides. The municipal PDF of March 2026 sets the flag fall at €18.24, against €17.37 at Spain.info, which is undated. The €6.49 airport supplement does not apply to departures from the airport (municipal fares, March 2026, consulted 23 October 2026).
  • The 2025 Larios show replaces the angels with the Nativity. « Natividad de luz » has 16 stars, 32 side columns and 32 light trails, after three years of angels in the street. The guides we read do not describe this change (announcement of 7 Nov. 2025, consulted 23 October 2026).
  • The 2026 Cabalgata was delayed by an hour. It left the Alcazaba at 6:00 pm instead of 5:00 pm, on AEMET’s forecast. This fact is missing from the guides we read (announcement of 6 Jan. 2026, consulted 23 October 2026).

Frequently asked questions about Christmas in Málaga

When does Málaga switch on its Christmas lights in 2026?

As of 23 October 2026, the council has not yet published any date. The press and listings announce Friday 27 November 2026, without official confirmation. In 2025, the council presented the scheme on 7 November, then reminded people of the switch-on on Friday 28 November on 21 and 27 November. Follow malaga.eu/navidad for the announcement that will count.

What time is the calle Larios show?

In 2025-2026, the « Natividad de luz » show ran at 6:30 pm, 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm, according to the municipal announcement of 21 November 2025. On 24 and 31 December and on 5 January, the show was broadcast without music. Older guides give other times: always check the announcement for the year of your trip.

Until what time do the lights stay on?

In 2025, the general lighting stayed on until midnight on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, until 2:00 am on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and the eves of holidays, and until 6:00 am on 24 and 31 December, according to the municipal announcement of 7 November 2025. One guide we read says « Monday to Thursday until midnight », which is wrong for Thursday.

What is there to see in Málaga at Christmas?

The essential trio is the calle Larios show, the « El Pescador de sueños » video mapping on the cathedral and the municipal belén in the Ayuntamiento courtyard, presented as free and open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm in 2025-2026. Add the La Concepción botanical garden and, if you are there in early January, the Cabalgata de Reyes on 5 January.

What is the weather like in Málaga in December?

According to AEMET’s 1981-2010 averages for Málaga airport, December has an average temperature of 13.2 °C, an average maximum of 17.5 °C and an average minimum of 8.9 °C. It rains on average 100 mm over 6.6 days. Bring a jacket for the evenings, especially for the 10:00 pm showings.

Is there an ice rink in Málaga at Christmas?

No official ice rink was found for 2025-2026, either in the centre or at Muelle Uno. Some older guides mention one, but their edition is several years old. Do not book a trip for ice skating without confirmation from the council or the organiser.

How do I get from the airport to the centre of Málaga?

The Cercanías C1 train links the airport to the centre for €1.80 to €2.70 according to Spain.info, an undated fare whose frequency has not been checked. The express bus costs €4. A taxi starts at a €18.24 flag fall on an ordinary day, according to the March 2026 municipal tariff, with no airport supplement on departures from the airport. For a private transfer booked in advance, Kiwitaxi is another option, though we have not checked its prices.

Can you see the Verdiales at Christmas?

Yes, in 2025: on Sunday 28 December 2025, from 12:00 pm, at the Andrés Jiménez Díaz park (Puerto de la Torre), according to the programme announced by the council on 17 December 2025 (28 pandas, €34,910 in prizes). For 2026, 28 December falls on a Monday, and no official announcement exists as of 23 October 2026.

Is the municipal belén free?

The municipal announcement of 3 December 2025 presents it as free. In 2025-2026 it was set up in the Ayuntamiento courtyard, from 6 December to 6 January, with visits from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and 73 nativity scenes listed in the guide available at belenes.malaga.eu. Check the dates for the current year before you go.
