The Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral runs from 16 November to 23 December 2026 on the Roncalliplatz, and entry is free. Only the cathedral interior is paid, since 1 July 2026: €12 full price, €6 reduced. The Heumarkt market, Heinzels Wintermärchen, is a separate event that runs until 10 January 2027.

Checked on against the official sources cited (Kölner Dom, City of Cologne, Heinzels Wintermärchen, koeln.de).

The Cologne Christmas markets 2026 are not one single market, and that’s the first thing to know before you go. The cathedral market opens on 16 November at the foot of the Dom. Heinzels Wintermärchen, for its part, sets up on the Heumarkt from 23 November, about two hundred metres away. Around twenty markets open in the city, about ten of them large, and their dates don’t all overlap.

This article sorts them out. You’ll find the dates and opening hours checked on 11 October 2026 against official sources, the cathedral entry ticket in force since 1 July 2026, the closures on Sunday 22 November, trains from France and Belgium, and a realistic budget. When we couldn’t verify a detail, we say so.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom

Free entry 16 November to 23 December 2026 About 150 chalets More than 100 free stage performances

The cathedral market sets up on the Roncalliplatz, in front of the cathedral’s west portal. It has about 150 chalets around a 25-metre Christmas tree, decorated with roughly 50,000 LED lights. The organiser announces more than 100 free stage performances. Köln Hbf station is only about two minutes’ walk away, which makes it the easiest arrival point for anyone coming by train (koeln.de, the Dom market page, checked on 11 October 2026).

The official name is Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom. The organisation is run by KW Kölner Weihnachtsgesellschaft mbH, which won the concession for 2026 to 2030 after the first tender was cancelled in August 2025 (City of Cologne press release no. 28236).

The dates are still provisional on the cathedral’s website, but koeln.de and NRW Tourism give them without reservation. Confirm them a few days before you leave, especially if you’re aiming for the start or the end of the period.

Highlights

  • Opening hours: Sunday to Wednesday 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, Thursday and Friday 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, Saturday 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
  • Closed on Sunday 22 November 2026 (see section 7).
Pixidia tip: weekends are very busy around the Dom. On weekdays it’s quieter (not measured). If you only want the market, avoid weekends and visit the cathedral at another time.

2. The other markets, one by one

Around twenty markets open in Cologne over the same period, about ten of them large (a 2025 guide lists 21). Several guides mix up the cathedral market and the Heumarkt one. The table below gives the dates and opening hours checked on 11 October 2026. The 2026 dates and hours of the Nikolausdorf are not confirmed, so we show the 2025 hours instead. Heavenue, a market that welcomes the LGBTQ+ community (16 November to 23 December 2026, one source only, no verified hours), is not in the table.

Markt der Engel, on the Neumarkt. White angels hang above the chalets, and people dressed as angels hand out little gifts. The children’s activities (face painting, magic, music, meeting characters) make it the market most geared to families. Its official name is Markt der Engel, so look for that name when you search on a map. The market’s website mentions a 2G rule. We found no recent confirmation of it, so ask the organiser before you go.

Hafen Christmas market, by the Rhine. Some sixty to seventy stalls sit under white tents shaped like sails, on the Museumsplatz of the Schokoladenmuseum. The market runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, longer than the cathedral one. You can visit it with the river as a backdrop, and koeln.de says a 50-metre Ferris wheel will open from 26 December. The end dates come from a page dated November 2025, so check them again before you go.

Stadtgarten, in the Belgisches Viertel. This is a neighbourhood market, with craftspeople and producers. It opens on Friday 13 November at 6:00 pm with a concert. Several guides still give the 2025 dates (14 November to 23 December 2025). The 2026 dates come from the organiser’s website, checked on 11 October 2026.

Nikolausdorf, on the Rudolfplatz. Half-timbered houses surround the Hahnentorburg, a medieval city gate. The Nikolaus walks through every day from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, except 22 November, which makes it a good stop with children. This time comes from 2025 sources and still needs confirming for 2026, as do the market dates. The stage starts at 6:00 pm.

Veedelsadvent, on the Chlodwigplatz. In the Südstadt district, around twenty stalls (a 2025 figure) sell Glühwein, Kölsch and Reibekuchen, with a carousel for children. Sources describe it as the calmest of the big markets. There’s no car park nearby, so take the Stadtbahn 15, 16 or 17.

Santas Weihnachtsmarkt in the MediaPark. This is a first edition, with about 80 stalls, curling on ice and a snow globe you can walk into. A sleigh is set up about fifty metres above the park, but access is by contest only.

Köln-West, quarter B. This market sits on the former site of the 4711 factory, with a partly heated Winterwelt of around 4,000 m². Its dates (19 November to 23 December 2026) come only from koeln.de, so confirm them with the organiser before you add it to your plans.

3. Heinzels Wintermärchen, on the Heumarkt and the Alter Markt

Heinzels Wintermärchen

23 Nov 2026 to 10 Jan 2027 Ice rink of about 1,800 m² Stadtbahn 5

Heinzels Wintermärchen is not the cathedral market. It’s a winter festival in the Altstadt, taking over the Alter Markt and the Heumarkt. On the Heumarkt, the rink and the chalets stay open until 10 January 2027, while the Alter Markt market stops on 23 December. The official site also mentions curling on ice (Heinzels Wintermärchen, general information, checked on 11 October 2026).

Opening hours are 11:00 am to 10:00 pm every day until 30 December, then 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on 31 December and 1 January. The market is closed on 24 and 25 December. One secondary source gives an end date of 4 January 2027: we use the date from the official site.

Rink prices

The official English site, checked on 11 October 2026, lists the following prices without saying which season they apply to: €9.50 for an adult Monday to Friday, €11.50 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, €6 for children aged 5 to 12, €6 for the « Good Night » session from 8:45 pm, and free entry for under-5s. Skate hire costs €6.50 for an adult and €5.50 for a child. Some booking portals show €9 and €11 for the 2025-2026 season, so check the difference before you buy.

  • Mulled wine cost €5 there in 2024, after a rise of 50 cents. The 2026 price has not been published.
  • Getting there: Stadtbahn 5 to the Heumarkt or Rathaus stop, buses 136 and 146.
Warning: the Heumarkt is about 200 metres from the cathedral, but it is not part of the Dom market. A ticket or map that lumps the two together will cost you time.

4. The cathedral ticket, a 2026 change

Since 1 July 2026, visiting the inside of the cathedral has been paid. The market itself stays free, but anyone combining the two should budget for the ticket. Full price is €12, reduced €6, and children up to 13 go in free. The reduced rate applies to pupils aged 14 and over, apprentices, students, adults accompanying school groups and Sozialpass NRW holders. Worshippers who come to pray or attend a service enter without a ticket through the north transept. Interior opening hours during Advent are not confirmed: check the cathedral’s website before you plan a visit.

The chapter justifies the charge with an annual cost of around €16 million and a deficit of around €4 million, according to Dompropst Guido Assmann (evangelisch.de, 3 June 2026).

The south tower and the treasury are separate visits. We could not check their prices on the official site, so don’t include them in your budget until you’ve confirmed them. On accessibility, the ISL e.V. listing says the interior and the treasury are wheelchair accessible (ISL e.V., Kulturführer Köln, read from a search extract). The south tower has no lift.

5. Budget: what to plan for

The market itself costs nothing to enter. The budget goes on the cathedral, a hot drink, the skating rink and the train. The table below groups the amounts we checked, each with its date, so you can see what’s recent and what isn’t.

To keep it reasonable, two levers are enough. The first is to pick a neighbourhood market, such as Chlodwigplatz or Stadtgarten, if you have little time and want a calmer atmosphere: entry is free there, and drink prices have not been checked for 2026. The second is to keep the cathedral ticket for a single visit, deciding in advance whether the interior is worth the price to you. 2026 mulled wine prices are not published, so allow a few euros extra per drink.

6. Getting there: train, coach and car

By train from Paris. Eurostar runs a direct service to Cologne, from €35 one way on the standard fare. Journey records do show variable routes: some go through Brussels, Liège and Aachen, others need at least one change. So we don’t give a journey time. Check the exact timetable for your date, and book early if you travel in December.

From Brussels and Amsterdam. Between Cologne and Amsterdam, the direct ICE takes 2 h 37 to 2 h 40 according to a ticket comparison site, which is not an official timetable. For Brussels, Eurostar gives 1 h 50 (search extract), but an SNCF Connect record from 7 July 2026 shows 3 h 26 via Aachen and Liège: the gap is not resolved. Check the time for your date on the operator’s website or app.

From Aachen. The ICE links the two cities in 31 to 33 minutes, according to the spring 2026 reference timetable (bahn.de, Aachen – Köln, checked on 11 October 2026).

By coach. The main coach car park is the Koelnmesse-Parkplatz P22, in Köln-Deutz, open from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm from 26 November to 23 December 2026. A free shuttle, line 199, runs from P22 to the Heumarkt stop (platform D) from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm (Stadt Köln, article 08056, checked on 11 October 2026).

By car. The car parks closest to the Dom are the Parkhaus Hauptbahnhof (395 spaces), the Parkhaus Dom (420), the Philharmonie (375) and Groß St. Martin (163), according to the cathedral website. On Advent weekends the car parks in the centre are often full by 11:00 am, based on what was seen in 2025. The city recommends the outer car parks (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring, MediaPark, Lanxess-Arena) and park-and-ride (Stadt Köln, parken rund um die Uhr).

7. Sunday 22 November: most markets are closed

On Sunday 22 November 2026, Totensonntag (Sunday of the dead), the cathedral market stays closed, as do those on the Neumarkt, the Rudolfplatz and the Chlodwigplatz. Stadtgarten opens from 6:00 pm, and so does Hafen, while the MediaPark welcomes visitors from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The city reminded everyone in 2025 that markets must stay closed from 5:00 am to 6:00 pm that day, under North Rhine-Westphalia’s public holiday law. That notice covered 2025, so the rule needs confirming for 2026 (Stadt Köln, press release 27988).

On 24 December, the cathedral market is closed, along with those on the Neumarkt, the Rudolfplatz and the Chlodwigplatz, and Heinzels on the Heumarkt, which also stays closed on 25 December. For Hafen, we found no closure that day. The official end for most markets is 23 December. If your stay falls on an Advent weekend, Saturday 28 November is a good day for a full visit.

8. Field tips and mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t confuse the Dom and the Heumarkt. They are two markets, with two sets of dates and hours. A generic map app often groups them together.
  • Watch out for 2025 dates. Several guides still give the dates of Stadtgarten and the neighbourhood markets. Check the organiser’s website.
  • Bring cash. Several sources say some stalls only take cash.
  • Check the luggage rule. In December 2024, the city said it could not ban suitcases across the whole city: the organisers decide on their own sites, and the police do carry out bag checks (leinetal24, December 2024).
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles. The cobbles in the old town are uneven, and weekends are very busy around the Dom (IHK Köln, city guide).
  • Don’t rely on a single journey time. Records vary by date and route, so check for your travel date.

9. By traveller type

  • Families. Markt der Engel and the Nikolausdorf suit children best. The Nikolaus walks through the Rudolfplatz every day from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, except 22 November (2025 time, to be confirmed for 2026). The Hänneschen-Theater programmes a Christmas show in November and December 2026: its times still need confirming on its website.
  • Couples. Stadtgarten has a neighbourhood feel, with craftspeople and a homemade mulled wine that blogs mention, and Veedelsadvent is calmer than the Dom.
  • On a small budget. The markets are free to enter. Only buy the cathedral ticket if the interior really interests you. Mulled wine cost €5 at the Dom in 2025. The 2026 price has not been published, so allow a few euros extra.
  • First visit. Start at the Dom, carry on through the Altstadt and Heinzels in the evening, then Hafen by the Rhine if you still have time.
  • Limited mobility. The cathedral interior is accessible. The cobbles are uneven and weekends are very busy, so choose markets you can reach by Stadtbahn and avoid weekends if you can.

10. A typical weekend

Arrive at Köln Hbf on Friday and leave your bags at the hotel. On Saturday morning, visit the cathedral if you’ve chosen the ticket, then wander the Roncalliplatz. In the afternoon, head down to the Heumarkt for Heinzels Wintermärchen, then take the Stadtbahn 5 and walk ten minutes to Hafen if you want the view over the Rhine. On Sunday 22 November, most markets stay closed (Dom, Neumarkt, Rudolfplatz, Chlodwigplatz). Hafen and Stadtgarten open at 6:00 pm, and the MediaPark runs from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm (see section 7).

For a longer trip, two of our articles give similar pointers. The Prague, Vienna and Budapest weekend in early November falls just before the markets. The Salzburg Christmas market 2026 compares another big Advent city.

What other guides don’t tell you

The guides we read, and the Google answers that cite them, often leave out the points below. Each one links to an official source checked on 11 October 2026.

  • The cathedral ticket has been paid since 1 July 2026. Full price is €12, reduced €6, and children up to 13 go in free. Kölner Dom, official information (accessed 11 October 2026).
  • On Sunday 22 November, markets are closed until 6:00 pm. This city rule was renewed each year according to the 2025 notice (to be confirmed for 2026), and guides leave it out. Stadt Köln, press release 27988 (read from a search extract, accessed 11 October 2026).
  • The Heumarkt is not the cathedral market. Heinzels Wintermärchen runs from 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, while the Dom market ends on 23 December. Heinzels Wintermärchen, general information (accessed 11 October 2026).
  • Stadtgarten opens on 13 November 2026, not the 14th. Guides still quote the 2025 dates. Stadtgarten organiser’s website (accessed 11 October 2026).
  • Coaches have their own car park and shuttle from 26 November to 23 December. P22 in Deutz opens from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm, and line 199 runs to the Heumarkt stop. Stadt Köln, article 08056 (accessed 11 October 2026).

Where should I stay for the Cologne Christmas market?

We don’t have a verified rate for December 2026: booking comparison sites are not open sources, so we quote no price. The most practical choice is a hotel near Köln Hbf, two minutes from the Dom. One blog also recommends the Altstadt-Nord, within walking distance of the markets. Check rates for your exact dates.

Cologne or Aachen for the Christmas market?

The two cities are 31 to 33 minutes apart by ICE, according to the spring 2026 reference timetable. We haven’t checked the dates or hours of the Aachen market, so we don’t compare it here. Cologne has around twenty markets, about ten of them large, and several run until 23 December. Source: bahn.de, accessed 11 October 2026.

Should I take the train from Paris for the Christmas market?

It’s possible. Eurostar runs a direct service from €35 one way, on the standard fare and subject to availability. Journey records also show routes with a change, which take longer. Check the exact timetable for your date and book early. Source: Eurostar, accessed 11 October 2026.
