The Escalade of Geneva 2026 runs from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December 2026, free of charge, in the Old Town. It marks the night of 11 to 12 December 1602 (Julian calendar, 21 to 22 December Gregorian), when Geneva fended off a Savoyard attack. On Saturday, the City of Geneva lists 9:00 am to 10:00 pm, Geneva Tourism 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Checked on against the official sources cited (City of Geneva, Geneva Tourism, Compagnie de 1602).

Every December, Geneva replays the night of 1602 in its Old Town, when the city repelled a Savoyard attack. In 2026 the festival has one more reason to go: the Compagnie de 1602 turns 100. Between the confirmed dates, the timetables that don’t match from one source to the next, the parade whose time hasn’t been published and the chocolate pot, here’s what you need to know before you go.

Dates, venue and what’s already confirmed

The Old Town and the Parc des Bastions

Free 11 to 13 December 2026 Outdoors, at night, warm clothing Mid-December

The festival takes place in Geneva’s Old Town. The Parc des Bastions (Promenade des Bastions 1, 1204 Geneva) was the starting point of the grand parade in 2025, and the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre hosts the bonfire that closes the procession. The City of Geneva and Geneva Tourism confirm the same dates and state that entry is free. The organiser is the Compagnie de 1602, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year according to the City’s official listing.

The Escalade isn’t a Christmas market, even though the two overlap in December. It’s a historical commemoration, with a parade, a chocolate pot and street entertainment. The parade brings together around 800 costumed characters, according to Presence Switzerland (FDFA), and ends with a bonfire in front of the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre.

  • Three days of festivities: Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2026.
  • Free entry, according to the City of Geneva and Geneva Tourism.
  • Centenary of the Compagnie de 1602, according to the City’s listing.

The Old Town is on slopes and cobbles, and December evenings are cold. Wear flat shoes and warm clothes. If you’re building a Swiss trip around the festival, our guide to day trips from Zurich has more ideas for a long weekend.

Pixidia tip: the Friday, Saturday and Sunday hours differ between the two official sources. Check the City of Geneva listing (updated 18 September 2026), then 1602.ch if the 2026 programme is published there.

Beyond the festival and its official programme, Geneva also offers guided Old Town tours on Viator. This one lasts three hours. The price below was checked on 13 October 2026. It isn’t part of the festival.

2026 programme: what the two official sources say

Three days, two timetables

The dates match, but the hours don’t. The City of Geneva listing, last modified on 18 September 2026, gives Friday from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm. Geneva Tourism lists Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, then Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. We don’t pick between them: the table gives each version with its source and date.

On Wednesday 9 December, the Bibliothèque des Eaux-Vives (rue Sillem 2, 1207 Geneva) hosts « Ah! La belle Escalade! » from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The animation is free and open from age 7, according to the City’s listing. It’s the only dated event before the weekend that we found in the sources we checked.

A ceremony on Thursday 10 December, with choir and chocolate pot, at 2:30 pm, isn’t published on the pages we checked on 13 October 2026.

The parade: 2025 times and what hasn’t been published for 2026

The grand historical parade

The parade is the festival’s high point. Around 800 costumed characters take part, according to Presence Switzerland (FDFA): fifes, drums, arquebusiers, pikemen, horsemen and the cannon « Falco », according to the Compagnie’s site. Dame Royaume leads the way, followed by Dame Piaget, who is said to have thrown her building’s key down to the defenders. That’s the tradition as it is told, not a dated fact. The procession ends in front of the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, where a bonfire is lit.

Highlights

  • Around 800 costumed characters, according to Presence Switzerland (FDFA).
  • Lantern-lit processions in 2025, according to the City of Geneva.
  • Mulled wine and lanterns sold during the grand parade, according to the Compagnie’s site.
Pixidia tip: arrive at least 45 minutes before the procession passes to get a decent spot. In 2025 the grand parade was held on Sunday; the 2026 order hasn’t been published.

These times date from 2025 and aren’t a 2026 announcement. The Compagnie’s detailed programme wasn’t published when we checked. If you’re planning a day around the parade, check the City’s listing the evening before, then 1602.ch if the 2026 programme appears there, and leave yourself a comfortable margin before the procession passes.

The chocolate pot: ritual, origin and making

A chocolate pot, broken by hand

The pot is a chocolate object decorated with the Geneva coat of arms, according to the City of Geneva. It holds marzipan shaped like vegetables, sweets and firecrackers, revealed when it’s opened, according to Lombard Odier. The ritual is precise: the pot is shown to the assembly, then broken with one blow of the fist by the youngest and the oldest of the participants.

The four stages of the ritual

  • The pot is presented to the assembly.
  • The traditional formula: “Et qu’ainsi périssent les ennemis de la République!” (“And thus perish the enemies of the Republic!”)
  • One blow of the fist from the youngest and the oldest in the assembly.
  • The contents are revealed: marzipan, sweets, firecrackers.

The story links the pot to the boiling vegetable soup that Mère Royaume is said to have thrown on the attackers. The City of Geneva presents that scene as a legend, not as an event from 1602 that was recorded at the time. The chocolate tradition, by contrast, is dated: the City traces it back to 1881, while Lombard Odier speaks of the late 19th century. The most precise date, 1881, therefore comes from the City of Geneva.

Pixidia tip: the pot’s time isn’t published on the pages we checked on 13 October 2026. To see it, find the exact moment on the Compagnie de 1602’s programme the day before your visit.

The night of 11 to 12 December 1602

A night attack, a portcullis and bells

The Treaty of Lyon, signed in 1601, went against Duke Charles-Emmanuel I of Savoy, who was then trying to retake Geneva. On the night of 11 to 12 December 1602, a Savoyard force led by Charles de Simiane, lord of Albigny, entered the city on collapsible ladders, according to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland. A sentry spotted the attackers, the bells rang around 4:30 am, and Isaac Mercier brought down the portcullis of the Porte Neuve, which trapped the bulk of the troops, according to the City of Geneva. The Treaty of Saint-Julien, in 1603, ended the hostilities.

These dates follow the Julian calendar, which was in use at the time. In the Gregorian calendar we use today, they fall on 21 and 22 December. Most summaries leave this out, which is why the date looks wrong.

On the Savoyard side, the City of Geneva puts the number of men left behind at 54. According to the HLS, the night left around 100 dead in total: that figure isn’t corroborated by the other sources we checked.

The song « Cé qu’è lainô », in Geneva’s Franco-Provençal dialect, was enshrined in the Geneva Constitution by a popular vote in 2024, according to Lombard Odier. The recognition is recent, but it sits on a tradition of historical processions organised since 1919, according to the HLS.

The Course de l’Escalade: a different race, different dates

Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026

The Course de l’Escalade takes place a week before the festival, in the Old Town, at the Parc des Bastions. It’s a road race, held since 1978 according to the HLS, paid and by registration. The adult route is 7.3 km, based on the 2025 route described by ca-frontaliers.com, and passes the cathedral, the Bourg-de-Four and the ramparts. According to the 2025 edition described by ca-frontaliers.com, the Course de la Marmite is run during the race; its 2026 date still needs confirming. It isn’t part of the festival ritual of 11 to 13 December.

Budget, access and practical tips

What the day costs

The festival is free, and so is the 9 December animation. A paid guided tour or a race entry does cost money. For the chocolate pot, no public 2026 price was published in the sources we checked, so the table doesn’t give one.

Access, transport and traffic

No transport timetable specific to the 2026 festival was noted in the sources we checked, so check the TPG (Geneva’s tram and bus network) timetables before you leave. If you’re coming by train from France or German-speaking Switzerland, our guide to SNCF Christmas 2026 train tickets helps you plan tickets for the holiday period. No traffic or road restriction announcement for 2026 was found at the time of our check.

Pixidia tip: for a festival weekend in the city centre, book accommodation in the centre several weeks ahead (a rule of thumb, not a costed recommendation).

Depending on your profile: family, couple, first timer, budget

Four ways to experience the festival

With family. The « Ah! La belle Escalade! » animation on 9 December is open from age 7. On Saturday the City lists a programme running until 10 pm, so plan a warm break and layers for the little ones.

As a couple. Saturday is the day the City lists the longest time window. Dinner in the Old Town fits well with the festival, as long as you book ahead.

For a first visit. In 2025 the grand historical parade was held on Sunday at 5 pm, and the 2026 order hasn’t been published. Check the Compagnie’s programme for the chocolate pot ritual, whose time isn’t published on the pages we checked.

On a tight budget. The festival, its parades and the 9 December animation are free. The budget therefore goes on transport, food and, if you choose, a guided tour. The race remains paid: CHF 42 for an adult according to the 2026 listings.

With reduced mobility. The Old Town is on slopes and cobbles. We found no official information on accessible routes for the 2026 parade: check with the Compagnie de 1602 before you travel.

What other guides don’t tell you

The points below are checked against an open official source, and are missing or wrong in the summaries and guides we reviewed.

  • The festival lasts three days, 11 to 13 December 2026. It isn’t just one weekend: the City of Geneva listing gives all three days, Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December (checked on 13 October 2026).
  • Saturday doesn’t have a single set of hours. The City lists 9:00 am to 10:00 pm, Geneva Tourism 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. A single time given without a source is incomplete (City of Geneva listing, checked on 13 October 2026).
  • The Compagnie de 1602 turns 100 in 2026. This is absent from the guides we reviewed but appears on the City of Geneva listing (checked on 13 October 2026).
  • « Ah! La belle Escalade! » takes place on Wednesday 9 December 2026, from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The animation is free, at the Bibliothèque des Eaux-Vives, and open from age 7. It comes before the festival and doesn’t appear in the summaries we reviewed (City of Geneva listing, checked on 13 October 2026).
  • The night of the attack is 11 to 12 December 1602, in the Julian calendar. Without that precision the date looks wrong: it corresponds to 21 and 22 December in the Gregorian calendar (Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, « Escalade » article).

Frequently asked questions about the Escalade of Geneva 2026

When is the Escalade of Geneva 2026?

The festival runs from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December 2026, in Geneva’s Old Town. The dates match on the City of Geneva and Geneva Tourism listings. The Course de l’Escalade, a separate event, takes place on 5 and 6 December 2026.

What are the festival hours in 2026?

The two sources don’t agree. The City of Geneva lists Friday from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm and Sunday from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm. Geneva Tourism lists Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, then Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Check the City’s listing the day before you go, then 1602.ch if the 2026 programme appears there.

What time does the parade pass?

The 2026 parade time hasn’t been published as of our check. In 2025 the grand historical parade was fixed for Sunday at 5 pm, starting from the Parc des Bastions, according to the City of Geneva. That reference isn’t a 2026 announcement: check the Compagnie’s programme before you go.

What is the chocolate pot, and how is it broken?

The pot is made of chocolate and filled with marzipan, sweets and firecrackers. The youngest and the oldest in the assembly break it with one blow of the fist, after the formula « Et qu’ainsi périssent les ennemis de la République! ». It recalls the vegetable soup that legend attributes to Mère Royaume. The chocolate tradition dates back to 1881, according to the City of Geneva.

Is the festival free?

Yes. The festival and the « Ah! La belle Escalade! » animation are free, according to the City of Geneva. The Course de l’Escalade, by contrast, is paid: CHF 42 for an adult and CHF 26 for a child according to the 2026 listings, to be confirmed on escalade.ch. The price of the chocolate pot isn’t published in the sources we checked.

What’s the difference between the festival and the race?

The festival, 11 to 13 December 2026, is a commemoration with a historical parade, a chocolate pot and street entertainment. The race, on 5 and 6 December 2026, is a paid road race, by registration, in the same Old Town. The two events don’t fall on the same weekend, so don’t mix them up when you book.

Why is the Escalade celebrated?

The festival commemorates the failure of the Savoyard attack of the night of 11 to 12 December 1602, in the Julian calendar. According to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, the historical procession has been held regularly since 1919. The Compagnie de 1602, which organises the festival, turns 100 in 2026.

Is 12 December a public holiday in Geneva?

No. Saturday 12 December 2026 isn’t a public holiday in the canton of Geneva, according to Radio Lac.
