The Frankfurt Christmas market 2026 runs from Monday 23 November to Tuesday 22 December 2026. Entry is free, and the market is open 10:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday to Saturday, and 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on Sunday. From Paris, the direct train takes about four hours.

Checked on against the official sources cited (Visit Frankfurt, event page).

The Frankfurt Christmas market is free, you walk everywhere, and it easily fits into one day. Between the Römerberg, the Dom and the brass concerts at the Alte Nikolaikirche, there is plenty to fill a winter day without rushing. This guide gathers the 2026 dates and opening hours checked against official sources, the journey from France and a suggested route you can adapt.

To be upfront: the sources we checked do not confirm every detail. When information is missing or contradictory (opening hours of the cathedral tower, museum prices, prices at the stalls), we say so and point you to the source.

1. Dates, opening hours and the 2026 schedule

The official Visit Frankfurt page sets the frame. The market opens on Monday 23 November 2026 at 5:00 pm, with the carillon at 5:05 pm and the speech by the mayor, Mike Josef, at 5:10 pm, on the Römerberg stage. It closes on Tuesday 22 December 2026. These dates matter: the 2025 edition ran from 24 November to 22 December, so guides written for 2025 give a start date that no longer applies.

The market spreads over six sites: the Römerberg, the Paulsplatz, the Mainkai on the riverbank, the Hauptwache, the Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, which hosts the « Rosa Weihnacht » area, and the Roßmarkt. From the Hauptwache, it takes about five minutes on foot to reach the market (Visit Frankfurt). More than 200 stalls are announced for 2026 according to marches-de-noel.fr (secondary source). Entry to the squares is free, with no ticket or booking. You pay for drinks and food at the stalls.

Weather and what to wear

The market is outdoors, in December. The 2025 edition had several rainy days, according to the city (hessenschau, 22 December 2025). Bring warm, waterproof clothing and shoes suited to the cobbles of the old town.

On safety, German police generally advise keeping your wallet, phone and keys in a closed inside pocket, carrying your bag closed in front of you and having little cash on you. This advice comes from sources about other German markets (2014 to 2024): we found no local alert for Frankfurt, in 2025 or 2026. The payment methods accepted at the stalls in 2026 have not been confirmed: check on site.

2. Getting there from France, from the station and the airport

From Paris, the direct train takes about four hours: marches-de-noel.fr gives 3h 50min, and a journey comparison site (EveryRail, undated page) gives 3h 38min to 3h 49min. With a change, the trip rises to 4h 54min (Virail). A day return is possible, but tiring: about 8 hours of train in total. From Strasbourg, a day trip is more practical, with about 1h 50min on a direct train according to Omio, and up to 2h 50min with a change according to SNCF Connect and marches-de-noel.fr. From Lyon, Omio lists a direct TGV of about six hours each day, while SNCF Connect shows several trains with a change: check your timetable the day before.

By car, the A5 and A3 motorways lead to the centre, with underground car parks all around, according to marches-de-noel.fr. The Römerberg is closed to traffic during the market, and there is no event parking. The official page lists accessible parking spaces at the Dom-Römer car park.

To compare with another German market, our guide to the Hamburg Christmas market 2026 is online. For a French alternative, our Strasbourg Christmas market 2026 guide is also published.

3. The historic centre: Römerberg and Dom

Römerberg, Nikolaikirche and half-timbered houses

Free entry Concerts at 6 pm 23 Nov to 22 Dec 2026

The Römerberg is the square where the official opening takes place, and the visual heart of the event. The half-timbered houses around it belong to the old town rebuilt after the Second World War, the « Neue Altstadt ». The market takes up this traditional spot in the old town. The Alte Nikolaikirche, a late Gothic church, overlooks the square and hosts the brass concerts at 6 pm.

The « Frau Holle » tree of the 2025 edition was about 28 metres tall according to the city (hessenschau, 22 December 2025). Other sources give greater heights, so go by the order of magnitude. The 2026 tree is not documented to date.

Making the most of the square

  • Arrive before 5 pm if you want to see the official opening on 23 November.
  • Come back around 6 pm for the brass, on the dates listed in section 4.
  • Note the pedestrian zone: the Römerberg is closed to traffic for the whole market.

Viator offers a tour called « Frankfurt Impressions Express – Highlights and Hidden Gems ». The exact content is on the product page. Available dates are not checked here: look at the product calendar before relying on a date. Booking is confirmed manually, and we did not check how long confirmation takes.

Pixidia tip: we did not find the sunset time in our sources. Look it up for your date, then plan the Römerberg for late afternoon and come back to see it after the brass concert.
Frankfurt Impressions Express – Highlights and Hidden Gems €289 for 2 travellers, checked on 24 October 2026 · ★ 4.9 (49 Viator reviews)

The Dom: cathedral and tower

The Kaiserdom Saint Bartholomew is Frankfurt’s cathedral. A tourist portal (tourispo) lists a 95-metre tower, with an observation platform at 66 metres, reached after 328 steps. We could not confirm these figures, nor the opening hours or climbing fee, on the parish’s official page: do not fix them in your plan without checking.

Paulskirche and Paulsplatz

The Paulskirche is linked to the history of 1848-1849, according to an extract from the city’s page. Its permanent exhibition, the Wandelhalle, is presented by the city as a six-stop route. Opening hours (10:00 am to 5:00 pm, according to an extract) are not confirmed by an official source we read directly: check the city’s website before relying on them.

4. The market: six sites, activities and concerts

The six sites are spread between the squares of the historic centre and the riverbank. The Mainkai hosts a children’s market. Visit Frankfurt says a free wristband, the « Kinder-Finder », is offered there. This children’s market was new in the 2025 edition, and the city judged it a success.

The market has a historic name, the « Christkindchesmarkt », attested from the late 14th century according to sources, although its exact origin is debated. Crafts are more low-key: a 2025 edition of the Künstlerweihnachtsmarkt brought artists together at the Paulskirche and the Römerhallen, but the 2026 edition is not confirmed.

The brass concerts from the gallery of the Alte Nikolaikirche are the most regular event. The official list has nine for 2026.

5. Eating and drinking at the market

At the stalls, mulled wine (Glühwein) and warm Apfelwein, served lukewarm, are the most common hot drinks, according to marches-de-noel.fr. For a rough idea, Hesse’s markets sold Glühwein for €4.50 to €5 in 2025 (hessenschau, 19 November 2025). That survey does not cover Frankfurt, and we found no Frankfurt price for 2026, so we do not publish a more precise figure.

A deposit is charged on mulled wine and Apfelwein cups. Its amount has not been confirmed for Frankfurt: ask at the stall. We found no source giving it for 2025 or 2026.

Bethmännchen and Frankfurter Brenten

For something sweet, look for the Bethmännchen, small almond biscuits marked with four dots, and the Frankfurter Brenten, local Christmas pastries, according to marches-de-noel.fr.

Our suggestion: try the Grüne Soße, a cold herb sauce served with potatoes and boiled eggs. The exact list of herbs varies by recipe, and we have no open source to fix it, so we do not list them. Its presence at the stalls is not confirmed: look for it in nearby restaurants too.

For Apfelwein in a tavern setting, Sachsenhausen, across the Eiserner Steg, is the district of Apfelwein taverns. You drink the local cider from a grey-blue stoneware Bembel jug. The walk from the Römerberg takes a few minutes.

6. Indicative budget for one day

The market itself is free: the budget goes on snacks, transport and museum tickets. The table only contains dated or sourced rough figures, and lines without reliable data are flagged as such.

For a quick lunch on the market (a Bratwurst), a mulled wine and a day transport ticket, budget about €17 to €18, excluding a sit-down meal or museum. That total adds €4.50 to €5 for mulled wine, about €5 for a Bratwurst and €7.75 for the RMV day ticket. The mulled wine and Bratwurst prices come from 2025 Hesse surveys, and the RMV fare is a single source to check. We found no Frankfurt price for 2026. Sit-down restaurants in the centre cost more, with no sourced figure at this stage. Accommodation is the most variable item, and we do not give a price for December 2026 as we have no dated data.

7. A suggested day out

Here is a route we suggest. It is the author’s proposal and is not sourced: the durations are estimates, not data. Only the market and venue opening times come from official sources, so check them before you leave.

  • 9:30 to 10:00 am: arrive at Hauptbahnhof, then S-Bahn to Hauptwache and about five minutes on foot to the market (Visit Frankfurt).
  • 10:00 to 11:30 am: the Dom, with the tower if you have checked its hours and fee.
  • 11:30 am to 12:30 pm: the Römerberg and the Alte Nikolaikirche, first seen from the outside.
  • 12:30 to 1:30 pm: lunch at the market with a Bratwurst. If you want to try the Grüne Soße, look for it in a nearby restaurant: its presence at the stalls is not confirmed.
  • 1:30 to 3:00 pm: Paulskirche and Paulsplatz, checking the Wandelhalle hours.
  • 3:00 to 4:30 pm: walk over the Eiserner Steg, then Sachsenhausen.
  • 4:30 to 6:00 pm: an Apfelwein tavern in Sachsenhausen, or the Städel, open until 6:00 pm (9:00 pm on Thursday) and closed on Monday.
  • 6:00 pm: back to the Römerberg for the brass, on the evenings listed in section 4.
  • 6:30 to 8:30 pm: the illuminated market, a last walk past the stalls, then back to the station.
Warning: if you arrive on Monday 23 November, the official opening is at 5:00 pm, and the route above does not include it.

8. Depending on your profile

With family

The Mainkai children’s market and the free « Kinder-Finder » wristband give the youngest something to focus on. Plan a warm break between stops, and keep the 6 pm brass for the return to the hotel, when the children are tired.

For a first visit

Focus on the Römerberg and the Dom on your first day, then keep the evening for the brass. The market is easy to walk: it spreads over six sites in the city centre, and the Hauptwache is about five minutes on foot from the market (Visit Frankfurt).

For reduced mobility

Visit Frankfurt announces a barrier-free perimeter, a wheelchair-accessible route via the Limpurger Gasse and accessible toilets at five locations: Paulsplatz, Saint-Paul, Alte Mainzer Gasse, Roßmarkt and Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz. The VdK association, cited by hessenschau, lists only three accessible markets in Hesse out of more than 600 (Wolfhagen, Willingen and Kassel), and Frankfurt is not one of them. Check before you go.

On a small budget

Entry is free, so the budget goes on snacks. Share a Bratwurst and only one hot drink, and favour walking: the centre can be covered on foot in a day.

What other guides don’t tell you

Be careful with guides written for 2025: they give 24 November as the first day, whereas the official Visit Frankfurt page, checked on 24 October 2026, shows an opening on 23 November 2026 at 5:00 pm, with the carillon at 5:05 pm and the speech at 5:10 pm.
