Six Viator tours reach the Great Wall at Mutianyu from Beijing, from €18.13 per adult for two travelers, with ratings from 4.93 to 5 out of 5. The bus trip is the cheapest, the private day tour is the most flexible, and the 4 to 5 hour layover is the shortest.
Checked on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).
Mutianyu is the section of the Great Wall that most travelers choose from Beijing. It has been restored, sits about 66 km (41 miles) from Beijing’s airport (1 hour 30 minutes by car in traffic), and is generally less crowded than Badaling, the most famous section. Once the destination is chosen, the real question becomes the format: shared bus, small group, private driver or a few hours’ layover. That is what I settle here, by comparing six experiences that do not look alike at all.
The listed price does not tell the whole story. Between the bus trip at €18.13 per adult for two travelers and the premium visit at €170.38, the gap comes mostly from what is included: hotel pickup, lunch, entrance fees, cableway, toboggan, guide. A low price may leave out the ride up or the meal, and a high price does not guarantee a richer day. So I read each listing through what it covers, not only through its price.
The six listings selected each have a rating of at least 4.93 out of 5, more than 100 reviews, and free cancellation. To start, the bus trip from Dongzhimen station is the cheapest, and the details of each option follow in the list.
Prices and availability were checked on October 22, 2026, for a window running from November 5, 2026 to January 4, 2027. They are for two adults and may change before you book, as may the cableway hours, which switch to winter timetable from November 16.
Why Mutianyu rather than Badaling

The stretch you will walk is a Ming-era reconstruction, but its first traces are much older: a wall already stood on this spot in the middle of the 6th century, under the Northern Qi, as the English Wikipedia article on Mutianyu recalls. The Ming reinforced the structure in 1569, under generals Tan Lun and Qi Jiguang.
The part visible today was restored much later. Restoration was authorized in 1983, and a section of about 2.5 km was put back in order in 1986, according to History Hit. That is the section, with its watchtowers, that almost every tour aims for. Sources mention about twenty watchtowers along this stretch.
The Great Wall has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, but that listing covers the structure as a whole. Mutianyu has no separate UNESCO status. It is a useful point if you read guides that present things differently, and it avoids selling a label the site does not carry.
Badaling remains the section closest to Beijing and the most visited. Guides advise against it unless time is short, because crowds are heavy on weekends and public holidays. Mutianyu is the compromise: a restored wall, lighter crowds, and a trip of about 66 km from the airport, or 1 hour 30 minutes by car in traffic. Jinshanling and Simatai are another experience: unrestored or partly restored sections, long and wild walks that belong to a different day. They are not part of this selection.
The Summer Palace is another monument, and another story. It is an imperial garden built from 1750 under Emperor Qianlong, largely destroyed in 1860, then rebuilt on its foundations in 1886. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Its core covers about 297 hectares, around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, the two areas most visits target. Several options combine both sites, and that is where the choice gets tricky, as we will see below.
The season also shapes the day. November sits around 0 to 11 °C (32 to 52 °F) in Beijing, with possible overnight frost, and January is colder and drier. The wall is exposed to wind, and daylight is short in winter: a day of 8 to 9 hours leaves little margin. On the other hand, crowds are generally lighter than at Badaling, a real argument for Mutianyu.

Read the table column by column. For budget, the bus trip is clearly the cheapest. For a day without logistics, the private options with pickup cost more. The highest price, €170.38, is the premium visit with toboggan and lunch. The highest rating, 5.00 out of 5, also comes with the fewest reviews: 108. A perfect score on a small sample should be read with caution.
The 6 best experiences for the Great Wall at Mutianyu from Beijing

1. Mubus Bus Tour from Dongzhimen
I put this one first because it shows the lowest base price in the check: from €18.13 per adult for two travelers, for the bus option leaving from Dongzhimen station. The Summer Palace option is added to the trip; its content is still to be confirmed, so check the price and what it includes on the listing before you book. Entrance fees and a buffet lunch fall under option TG7, which you should also check. With 1591 reviews and a 4.96 rating, it is the most-reviewed product in the set. It suits a traveler who accepts a group and a fixed schedule and wants to keep the budget low. The catch is the meeting point: exit C of Dongzhimen station, on lines 2 and 13, is where you meet. Arrive before the departure time shown on the listing, because a misread subway map can make you miss the bus.
- Round-trip bus from Dongzhimen
- English-speaking guide, tea and snacks at the welcome center
- Summer Palace option can be added to the trip
- Free cancellation

2. Private Day to Mutianyu and Summer Palace, Cableway Included
This private day is the simplest way to see Mutianyu and the Summer Palace without organizing anything. Pickup is at the main entrance of the Kempinski Yansha hotel, and a professional guide accompanies your group for the whole day. The title promises a cableway ride included, which saves negotiating the ticket on site. Lunch is only included in the all-inclusive option: check it before you pay, because that choice changes the budget for the day. At 4.98 out of 5 across 248 reviews, the listing is solidly rated. The announced duration is 8 to 10 hours. The price is €88.82 per adult for two across the whole window. Best time: the morning, since daylight is short in January. I recommend it to a couple or a family who want two sites in one day without timing every step.
- Pickup at the Kempinski Yansha hotel
- Professional guide and bottled water
- Cableway included, according to the listing title
- Lunch in the all-inclusive option

3. Mutianyu and Summer Palace, Group or Private Option
This listing offers the same program in two formats, group or private, with Mutianyu and the Summer Palace in one day. The price starts at €125.07 per adult for two travelers, and the range goes up to €168.57. The listing does not say which option matches which price, so compare the two formats on the listing before you choose. The round-trip cableway or the chairlift with a toboggan ticket appears in the inclusions, along with lunch, hotel pickup and a professional guide. With 851 reviews and a 4.93 rating, the listing is well established. It serves the traveler who hesitates between group and private, since they can compare on an identical program. The pitfall specific to this listing: check which lift is included in your option, round-trip cableway or chairlift with toboggan. Best time: the morning, since daylight is short in January.
- Round-trip cableway or chairlift with toboggan ticket, depending on the option
- Lunch and hotel pickup
- Professional guide
- Free cancellation

4. Private Trip to Mutianyu With Driver
This private trip is the easiest to read: an air-conditioned vehicle, a driver, and the Great Wall at Mutianyu, with no other stop. Pickup is in the hotel lobby. Entrance fees and the shuttle up to the wall are included, so you do not pay them separately on site. The driver speaks basic English: enough for the journey and the instructions, but if you expect a guide who tells the story of the sites, this is not the right format. The listing covers only the Great Wall, not the Summer Palace. With 4.98 out of 5 across 1086 reviews, it is one of the most solid listings in the selection. The price starts at €83.38 per adult for two, for an 8-hour day. I recommend it to a family who wants to go at its own pace, without a group, and without needing detailed commentary along the way. Best time: the morning, to keep a margin on an 8-hour day.
- Air-conditioned private vehicle
- Entrance fees and shuttle to the Great Wall included
- Pickup in the hotel lobby
- Bottled water

5. 4 to 5 Hour Layover Visit to Mutianyu
This is the layover formula. With 4 to 5 hours on site, it suits a traveler with a connection in Beijing who wants to see the wall without giving it the whole day. Pickup is at the hotel or the airport, by private car, with mineral water. Entrance and an English-speaking guide are an option: decide before you pay, because without a guide you read the signs on your own. The price starts at €71.60 per adult for two, the lowest after the bus trip. The real pitfall is time. One operator recommends at least nine hours of layover for a visit to the wall, formalities included. With 4 to 5 hours, you need to leave quickly and plan nothing else. The 66 km trip from the airport takes 1 hour 30 minutes by car in traffic, each way. This formula is for a short layover, not a full day: the best option is a daytime layover.
- Pickup at the hotel or the airport
- Private car and mineral water
- Entrance and English-speaking guide as options
- Free cancellation

6. Premium Private Tour, Toboggan and Summer Palace
This visit is the most premium of the selection, and its listing shows it: an air-conditioned vehicle, hotel pickup in the 4th Ring Road area, lunch, entrance fees, and a cableway or chairlift with a toboggan ride. With 5.00 out of 5, it is the top-rated listing, but it also has the fewest reviews in the set, 108. The price starts at €170.38 per adult for two, the highest in the selection. It is open 57 of the 61 days in the window: the best date falls between November 5 and December 31, since the first four days of January are closed. It suits the traveler who wants the toboggan, lunch and entrance fees included in the price. Before comparing, check which lift is on your ticket, cableway or chairlift, because the listing mentions both.
- Air-conditioned private vehicle
- Lunch and entrance fees included
- Cableway or chairlift and toboggan ride
- Pickup in the 4th Ring Road area

Cableway and chairlift: winter hours
According to the sources consulted, the Mutianyu chairlift runs its high season from March 16 to November 15, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., then its low season from November 16 to March 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The switch happens on November 16, eleven days after the start of the window: most dates therefore fall on winter hours. Cableway hours differ from one source to another, and also vary by season. Do not rely on a single website, and check on the day, since these hours set the order of your day. Climb the wall in the morning, as daylight is short in January, and keep the Summer Palace for the afternoon.
The Summer Palace: hours, no prices
The official Beijing municipal website, consulted for a 2024 check, lists park entry from 6:30 a.m. in low season and closing at 7 p.m. in winter. Ticketed areas open around 8:30 a.m. and close between 5 and 6 p.m. Older pages give different hours: check them before you go. I do not publish an entrance fee, because no verified amount was available when this was written. Listing 6 includes entrance fees, which settles the question for that formula.
From Beijing: between the airport and the wall
From Beijing Capital Airport to Mutianyu, allow about 66 km, or 1 hour 30 minutes by car or taxi in traffic. Estimates range from 1 to 2 hours. By public transport, take the subway to Dongzhimen, then a shuttle or sightseeing bus, and allow 3 to 4 hours in total. One operator puts the public-transport cost at about 100 CNY per person; that is a commercial source, so check before you go. This difference in time is the first criterion for choosing between a tour with pickup and an independent trip.
Pickup: the radius matters
Pickup rules are not the same everywhere. Some listings cover hotels inside the 2nd Ring Road, others hotels inside the 4th Ring Road, and others the hotel or the airport. For a private day, check your hotel before you pay: an address outside the zone may require an extra trip, or even a different option. Give the driver the exact hotel address, with its Chinese name if you have it, to avoid routing mistakes.
Dress and conditions
November sits around 0 to 11 °C (32 to 52 °F), with possible overnight frost, and January is colder and drier. The wall is exposed to wind. Bring layers, shoes with good grip, gloves and a windbreaker.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing on the displayed price without reading which option is included. For the bus trip as for the group or private listing, the price depends on what is included.
- Counting on the cableway without checking it is on your ticket. Three listings mention it, in the inclusions or the title: listing 2 (title only), listing 3 and listing 6.
- Booking a 4 to 5 hour layover for a short connection, with no margin for the trip from the airport.
- Forgetting the meeting point. For the bus, it is a subway station exit. For private tours, it is a specific hotel, and its pickup radius matters.
- Ignoring the end date of the visa waiver, set at December 31, 2026: an arrival in January falls under another rule, to be checked before departure.
Depending on your profile
- Family: a private day, like listing 2 or 6, avoids waiting and the group’s pace. On a tight budget, the bus trip remains the simplest option.
- Couple: listing 2 combines both sites with a guide; listing 4 gives more freedom with a private trip.
- Small budget: the bus trip (listing 1) has the lowest base price in the check, and the Summer Palace option can be added on the listing. For listing 3, the group option price is shown on the listing: the data does not separate it.
- First visit: listing 3 or listing 2, which cover Mutianyu and the Summer Palace in one day, with lunch depending on the option.
- Reduced mobility: ask the operator which access is possible before you book, since nothing in the listings reviewed says so.
Frequently asked questions

The bus trip from Dongzhimen station, from €18.13 per adult for two travelers, has the lowest price in the October 22, 2026 check. How much does a private day trip to Mutianyu from Beijing cost?
The private options in the check range from €71.60 per adult for two, for a 4 to 5 hour layover, to €170.38 for the premium visit with toboggan and lunch. Is the cableway included in the tours?
It depends on the listing. Three listings mention it, in the inclusions or the title: listing 2 (title only), listing 3 and listing 6. The other three do not mention it. Cableway and toboggan prices are not published here, because the sources disagree. Check the inclusions line of each listing before you book.
Can you see the Great Wall and the Summer Palace on the same day?
Yes, with listings 2, 3 and 6, which both announce the two sites. Listing 4 covers only the Great Wall. On a day of 8 to 9 hours, start with the wall in the morning and keep the park for the afternoon. The Summer Palace opening hours are detailed in the tips section: see the hours.
Do I need a visa to visit China?
For French nationals, entry without a visa for a tourist stay of up to 30 days is in force until December 31, 2026, according to service-public.gouv.fr, and specialist press confirms this extension. No extension beyond that date had been found at the time of writing. Entry from January 1, 2027 therefore falls under another rule, to be checked with the Chinese embassy before departure: this is the case for the January dates in this window. If you hold another passport, check the rules for your nationality with the Chinese embassy or consulate before you travel. Your passport must also be valid for the whole length of your stay.
Should I book ahead in winter?
All six listings show availability across the whole window from November 5, 2026 to January 4, 2027. Five are open all 61 days, and the sixth 57 of 61 days, the first four days of January being closed. All six are listed with instant confirmation and free cancellation, according to the Viator data.
