The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens to the public on Friday 11 December 2026, a date announced by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism on 28 July 2026. Full price is 70 dirhams, about €17, and online tickets have been on sale since 18 September 2026. Opening hours and the inaugural exhibition have not been announced yet.
Checked on against the sources cited in the article.
Announced more than fifteen years ago, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is finally opening its doors. Frank Gehry’s building on Saadiyat Island opens to the public on 11 December 2026. The date is official and ticket prices are published, but much of the practical information, starting with opening hours, is not yet. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and what to check before you book a flight or a hotel.
1. A date confirmed by the authority that oversees it

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Friday 11 December 2026
The Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi (DCT) announced the date in an official press release on 28 July 2026. The DCT presents the museum as the largest site in the Guggenheim network, with 80,000 m² of built space. The project ran far behind schedule. According to ArchDaily (checked on 16 October 2026), it was announced in 2006, construction started in 2011, stopped for several years, then resumed in 2019. The completion date, set for 2025 in 2021, was pushed back to December 2026 (The National, 28 July 2026).
Highlights
- Ten sculptural cones, the tallest reaching 88 metres
- A collection built since 2009, with works from the 1960s to today
- A cultural district already well stocked, since the Louvre Abu Dhabi sits on the same island
If you arrive in Abu Dhabi on 11 December, the card below offers an entry ticket to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, on the same island as the Guggenheim. This is not a Guggenheim ticket: it gives access to the Louvre. It is offered here for the cultural district, not for entry to the Guggenheim, whose tickets are sold on the museum’s website.
2. Tickets and prices: what the sources say
Online sales opened on 18 September 2026, as The National reported. Gulf News, updated on 20 September, gives the same full price and points to booking on guggenheimabudhabi.ae. The full price is 70 dirhams. At the indicative rate of 1 October 2026 (1 dirham = €0.24220, taken from exchange-rates.org in a search result), that comes to about €17. The table below lists every amount and free-entry category we could cross-check.
| Category | Condition | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Full price | Adult | 70 dirhams (about €17) |
| Discount | Educators employed in the UAE, military personnel, members of Homat Al Watan, with proof | 35 dirhams (about €8.50) |
| Discount | Holders of Fazaa or Esaad cards, with proof | 50 dirhams (about €12) |
| Free | Under 18 | 0 |
| Free | Students of UAE universities, with ID | 0 |
| Free | UAE citizens and residents aged 60 and over | 0 |
| Free | Person with specific needs; the companion pays for their ticket at the desk | 0 for the person, ticket for the companion |
| Groups | Reduced rates exist, no amount published | Not published |
Source: Gulf News (updated 20 September 2026) and The National (18 September 2026), checked on 16 October 2026. The 35 and 50 dirham discount amounts come from this press source alone.
Two practical rules matter. Free student tickets are not downloaded in advance: they are collected at the desk on the day, with ID. Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times. No source we read says whether discounts can be combined.
Should you book in advance?
Online ticket sales have been open since 18 September 2026. We could not check whether a timed slot is compulsory, or how many visitors the museum can take per hour. So we cannot say that booking is required, or that it is unnecessary. What we can say for sure: online sales already exist, and free student tickets are collected on site. Museum tickets are bought on its website. The Louvre ticket mentioned above is a separate product, sold by Viator.
3. Getting there from Abu Dhabi, Dubai or abroad

Saadiyat is reached by car or taxi
Saadiyat is an island connected to Abu Dhabi city. According to Gulf News (1 October 2026, quoting Etihad Rail, an operator we did not read directly), no station on the rail network serves the cultural district. The nearest station to the city is Abu Dhabi MBZ City, open on that date. In Dubai, Al Yalayis station (Jumeirah Golf Estates) is open, but it does not serve Saadiyat. We found no direct rail link to the museum in the sources we read. The cost of a taxi or car trip from Dubai or Abu Dhabi has not been checked against an open source: confirm it on an up-to-date route before you travel.
| Route | Mode | Information found | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abu Dhabi to Saadiyat | Taxi | Cost not verified from an open source | Not verified |
| Abu Dhabi | Etihad Rail, Abu Dhabi MBZ City station | Station open | Read on Gulf News, 1 October 2026 |
| Saadiyat | Etihad Rail | No station | Read on Gulf News, 1 October 2026 |
| Dubai | Etihad Rail, Al Yalayis station | Station open, does not serve Saadiyat | Read on Gulf News, 1 October 2026 |
Source: Gulf News, checked on 16 October 2026, for the stations. The taxi cost has not been verified from an open source.
If you are transiting through Doha or Abu Dhabi from abroad, our article on the safety of stopovers in Doha and Abu Dhabi covers the points to watch. For Canadians, a visa is issued on arrival, free of charge, for 90 days in any 180-day period (voyage.gc.ca, 14 October 2026). For French nationals, the entry rule was not checked at the time of writing. The details are in the « Entry and stay » section of the French foreign ministry’s site (diplomatie.gouv.fr).
4. Travel advice: the levels do not agree
Official advice does not speak with one voice. We quote it here with its date and leave the judgement to you. The decision to travel is yours and your government’s, and this advice can change before 11 December: eight weeks separate the date of this article from the opening.
| Country | Level or wording | Page date | Recommendation cited |
|---|---|---|---|
| France | Heightened vigilance | 10 September 2026 | Shelter when the alert signal sounds; do not approach interception debris; register with the Fil d’Ariane, France’s travel registration service |
| Canada | Great caution across the whole country; avoid non-essential travel only around Al Minhad | 14 October 2026 | Visa on arrival for Canadians |
| United Kingdom | Caution | 24 July 2026, still in force on 16 October | Insurance covering the itinerary and activities; avoid military and security sites |
| United States | Level 3, « Reconsider travel » | 29 August 2026, from a search result | Official page not read, access refused during the check |
Source: diplomatie.gouv.fr, voyage.gc.ca and GOV.UK (pages read), checked on 16 October 2026. The US level is known only from a search result.
The UK advice is the only one that spells out insurance: it should cover the itinerary, the planned activities and emergency expenses. Canada asks for great caution across the country, and reserves its advice to avoid non-essential travel for the Al Minhad area. For each country, the dated official page is the reference: France on 10 September 2026, Canada on 14 October 2026, the UK on 24 July 2026. We do not judge whether the trip is safe: that assessment is yours, based on your government’s advice.
5. Opening hours, visit rules, inaugural exhibition: not yet published
As of 16 October 2026, the DCT press release of 28 July gives neither opening hours, nor a timed-slot system, nor an exhibition title. The official website guggenheimabudhabi.ae could not be reached during our check (access refused), so none of these points is confirmed by a museum source. Still unpublished at this date:
- opening hours and any closing days;
- the timed-slot system and visitor capacity;
- rules on bags, lockers, photographs and video;
- detailed access conditions (ramps, wheelchairs, toilets);
- group prices and guided tours.
Why not assume the Louvre Abu Dhabi rules apply?
The Louvre Abu Dhabi, its neighbour on the same island, publishes a detailed set of rules. According to a search result (Louvre Abu Dhabi rules, document not opened for this check), it bans flash, tripods and filming equipment in its galleries. No photography rule is published for the Guggenheim as of 16 October 2026, and the neighbour’s rule does not apply to it automatically. Do not plan equipment or shots on the basis of the neighbour’s rules.
The inaugural exhibition: an announcement to come
The DCT says the opening exhibitions will be announced « in the coming months ». None is named in the sources we read, and Gulf News notes that no full list of the works shown at opening has been published. Watch the museum’s website and the DCT press releases: that is where the announcement will appear.
6. A collection of art from the 1960s to today
The collection has been built since 2009 and covers art from the 1960s to today. It is organised around five themes: abstraction, popular culture, territory, language and narrative (DCT, 28 July 2026). According to ArchDaily (checked on 16 October 2026), the works acquired belong to the government of Abu Dhabi, a feature that sets it apart from other Guggenheim sites.
The National, in its article of 29 September 2026, names ten Arab artists whose works are in the collection, including Samia Halaby, Huguette Caland, Ghada Amer, Youssef Nabil and Ibrahim El-Salahi. Gulf News also cites international names, from Jackson Pollock to Yayoi Kusama. These names belong to the collection: they do not guarantee that a particular work will be on display on 11 December. No official count of the works has been published to date: the DCT gives no figure.
The building in numbers
| Item | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Built area | 80,000 m² | DCT, 28 July 2026 |
| Indoor exhibition space | 11,600 m² | DCT; ArchDaily |
| Outdoor exhibition space | 23,000 m² | DCT; ArchDaily |
| Galleries | 30, around a central atrium | DCT, 28 July 2026 |
| Sculptural cones | 10, nine in stainless steel and one in onyx and glass, up to 88 m | ArchDaily; Hypebeast FR |
| Architect | Frank Gehry, described as « the late » | DCT; ArchDaily |
Source: DCT Abu Dhabi, press release of 28 July 2026; ArchDaily, checked on 16 October 2026. One Hypebeast summary mentions nearly 25,000 m² of outdoor space, but the body of its text gives 23,000 m²: we keep the latter figure. Gulf News writes 28 galleries instead of 30: we keep the DCT figure.
Why the cones?
According to ArchDaily, the cones provide natural ventilation and shade for the outdoor spaces. A comparison with the traditional wind towers, the barjeels, appears in search results, but no open source confirms it, so we do not present it as fact. According to the same ArchDaily article, the building also houses a centre for art and technology, children’s spaces, archives and a library.

8. Which visit for your profile?
- Families. Under-18s enter free. Children aged 12 and under must stay with an adult at all times. The architecture includes children’s spaces, according to ArchDaily, but their conditions of use have not been published.
- Students. Entry is free for students of UAE universities, with ID, and the ticket is collected at the desk on the day. The fee schedule we read does not offer free entry to other students.
- Tight budget. The 35 and 50 dirham discounts require proof, and their amounts come from one press source only. For everything else, the full price of 70 dirhams applies.
- Seniors. Entry is free from age 60 for UAE citizens and residents. For a visitor aged 60 or over coming from abroad, free entry is not published: the full price applies.
- Reduced mobility. A person with specific needs enters free, and their companion pays for their ticket at the desk, according to Gulf News. Detailed access conditions have not been published: write to the museum before you go to confirm the route.
- First visit. The collection is read through five themes (abstraction, popular culture, territory, language, narrative), according to the DCT. With no inaugural exhibition announced, the visit will focus on the collection, whose list of works on display has not been published.
9. Four mistakes to avoid
- Confusing the Viator card with a Guggenheim ticket. The product offered gives access to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, on the same island. Entry to the Guggenheim is booked on the museum’s website.
- Counting on a downloadable student ticket. The free ticket is collected at the desk on the day, with ID (Gulf News, 20 September 2026).
- Planning to take the train to the museum. No Etihad Rail station serves Saadiyat, according to Gulf News (1 October 2026). Taxi or car are the only options we read, and the taxi cost has not been checked.
- Ignoring your country’s advice. The advice differs between countries. Read your government’s before you travel, and check that your insurance covers the whole itinerary.
What other guides don’t tell you
The opening pages we read (press, agencies, travel sites) give the date and the prices. Here are three points they leave out, with the source where one exists.
- The free student ticket is collected at the desk on the day. It is not downloaded in advance, and you must show ID. Gulf News, updated 20 September 2026 (checked on 16 October 2026).
- Two discounts have a set amount. The 35 and 50 dirham discounts apply to listed groups, with proof, while Gulf News and Khaleej Times mention reduced rates for groups only, with no amount. The National, 18 September 2026 (checked on 16 October 2026). These amounts come from a single press source: confirm them at the desk.
- No official count of the works. The DCT press release gives no number of pieces in the collection, and the press articles we read do not confirm one. DCT Abu Dhabi, press release of 28 July 2026 (checked on 16 October 2026).
Practical info before you go
An eSIM saves you from hunting for a local SIM card on arrival, for maps, taxis and bookings. The prices we found in search results contradict each other, so no amount is shown here.
Prices not shown: sources disagreeThe UK government says insurance should cover the itinerary, the activities and emergency expenses. Read the exclusions linked to areas under travel advice before you buy.
