The Icehotel opens on Friday 11 December 2026, but no night rate for the 2026-2027 season has been published. The official site announces an opening offer from 10 to 12 December at SEK 25,995 per person, shown as fully booked when we checked. A day visit costs SEK 325 for an adult, at rates valid until December 2026.

Checked on against the official sources cited (icehotel.com, Kiruna Lapland, Swedish Lapland).

Every winter, the Icehotel is rebuilt at Jukkasjärvi with ice cut from the Torne river. Three questions come up before booking a 2026-2027 season: when the hotel opens, how much a night costs, and how to get to Jukkasjärvi from Kiruna. This article separates what the official sources confirm from what still needs checking. Every figure links to its source and its access date.

An official calendar, but a partial one

Opens 11 December 2026 Ice rooms from December to April ICEHOTEL 365 open all year

The 37th edition opens on Friday 11 December 2026, according to the opening offer page on the official site. That page’s address contains « 36 », but its content does concern the 37th edition: that is the date to keep. The opening offer runs from 10 to 12 December 2026, at SEK 25,995 per person for 14 places, and it was shown as fully booked at the time of checking.

Ice rooms and art suites are open from December to April. The Old Homestead restaurant opens on 11 December 2026 and closes on 28 March 2027; the Veranda restaurant is closed from 29 March to 10 December 2026. ICEHOTEL 365, the permanent part, stays open all year.

What the site does not say is when the ice hotel closes. According to some blogs, the season ends in mid-April, and one of them writes late March or early April: no date is official. The ice block is harvested from the Torne river between mid-March and mid-April, according to the regional tourist office, which gives an order of magnitude for the end of the season.

If your calendar gives you some choice, keep two gaps in mind. The main restaurant stays open until 28 March, but the ice hotel has no published closing date. And the day-visit tickets shown are only valid until December 2026: a visit in the following season has no price yet.

Without booking a night, the official day ticket (SEK 325 for an adult, valid until December 2026) lets you see the ice rooms and the ice bar. It is also a way to test the place before deciding on a longer stay.

Pixidia tip: don’t base a 2026-2027 season budget on today’s visit prices. They are only valid until December 2026.

2. Rates: what is published and what is not

Visits: published rates. Nights: no official rate

No night of the 2026-2027 season has an official rate as of the verification date. The hotel’s pages give the prices of visits and of the opening offer, and nothing else. The table below separates the two cases. The pages we read do not say how a night is booked: ask the hotel for the rate before making any reservation.

A travel blog dated 9 August 2026 gives a night in an ice room « from SEK 6,000 » for two people, with rises at Christmas, and an art suite « from SEK 8,000 ». These are indications not verified with the hotel. They give an order of magnitude, not a rate for the season. The same article cites SEK 3,000 to 4,000 per night for a heated room outside the ice, with no official reference.

The fare for bus 501 from Kiruna to Jukkasjärvi illustrates the same problem: an undated blog gives it as SEK 52, but the reference page on transport points to the regional operator’s site without publishing an amount. We therefore do not keep that figure.

3. Sleeping in ice: rooms, temperature and gear

A sculpted room, a fixed temperature

About -5°C inside Sleeping bag rated to -25°C Rooms sculpted by artists

An ice room does not look like a standard hotel room. Each space is sculpted by an artist, and the indoor temperature is, according to the official site, about -5°C, constant in the ICEHOTEL 365 hall. Visit Sweden France and some blogs cite -5 to -8°C: we keep the official value and flag the gap.

The number of rooms varies by source. The official site gives 15 to 20 ice rooms and 12 art suites for the winter; other sources, including Visit Sweden France, announce about 55 ice rooms. We do not keep a single figure. The hotel’s story says that around 15 artists are selected from about 150 proposals.

What is provided for you

  • A sleeping bag rated to -25°C, although outside Jukkasjärvi it can drop well below -30°C (Swedish Lapland).
  • A suit and boots, according to the official page dedicated to the stay.

The Winter Deluxe package, available from 1 December, combines an ICEHOTEL 365 suite, a Kaamos deluxe room, an ice menu, an ice sculpture, a snowmobile trip to look for the northern lights, a night dog-sled ride and breakfast. The official site does not publish its price.

Pixidia tip: many guides recommend a single night on the ice, combined with a heated room for the rest of the stay. This advice comes from those guides, not from a rule published by the hotel.

4. Getting to the hotel from Stockholm and Kiruna

Plane or train, then about 30 minutes by bus

Jukkasjärvi village is 17 km from Kiruna according to the official site; other sources give between 9.5 and 17 km. The first leg is the plane or train to Kiruna, then a transfer. The table sums up the durations and frequencies announced.

The train: an offer that changes in December

The Stockholm-Narvik night contract, which runs through Kiruna, was awarded to SJ on 25 June 2026 for the period December 2026 to December 2028. The December 2026 timetables are not published as of the verification date, so we give no train timetable for the season. Check the dates on the operator’s site before booking a ticket.

Bus 501: the friction point

Bus 501 leaves from Kiruna bus station and takes about 30 minutes. The last weekend departure from Jukkasjärvi can be as early as 2:30 pm, according to Routes North. This is the friction point travellers report: a late return on a Saturday can leave you without a bus. A taxi costs SEK 450 one way (Routes North, undated).

A transfer booked with the hotel is another option. It must be reserved before 3 pm the day before, in winter only. For that reason, book it as soon as your flight is confirmed.

5. Northern lights: old figures, a long season

A season from August to March, with no official probability

The official site says the aurora season runs from August to March, with a peak between 9 pm and 11 pm, but it publishes no probability. The only figures available come from the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF): they date from the 2005 campaign, run in Kiruna from 1 January to 20 April.

Source: IRF, Kiruna, aurora statistics 2005, accessed 16 October 2026. Old data, a single season, and December is not covered.

Over two consecutive nights, the campaign shows a visible arc in 78% of cases. Be careful, though: the source does not use consistent denominators. Kiruna Lapland, for its part, says that April offers « no good chances », whereas the 2005 data show a visible arc one time in two. The two sources contradict each other, and neither is enough to promise an aurora.

The climate that shapes an outing

January and February are the coldest months (averages of -11.6°C and -11.5°C), December is at -9.7°C, and according to Kiruna Lapland the sun does not rise above the horizon in December. The following table gives the 1991-2020 averages for Kiruna.

6. What other guides don’t tell you

The guides we read often repeat the same generalities. Here are the facts checked on official pages, and those that come only from secondary sources, flagged as such.

  • The opening date is Friday 11 December 2026. A blog dated 9 August 2026 and AI summaries announce « mid-December » or « December ». The opening offer page of the official site gives the day and the 37th edition (icehotel.com, accessed 16 October 2026).
  • The Old Homestead restaurant opens on 11 December 2026 and closes on 28 March 2027; the Veranda is closed from 29 March to 10 December 2026. No guide we read gives these dates. The official name of the restaurant is « Veranda » (icehotel.com, accessed 16 October 2026).
  • The hotel transfer is booked the day before, before 3 pm, in winter only. The guides do not mention this rule. It is on the « how to get here » page (icehotel.com, accessed 16 October 2026).
  • Bus 501 runs about 6 times a day on weekdays and 2 times at weekends, and its last weekend departure can be at 2:30 pm. The guides speak of a « regular » or « infrequent » bus, with no figures. Secondary source, undated (Routes North, accessed 16 October 2026).
  • The first figure on the northern lights gives a visible arc on 56% of nights. The guides settle for « good chances ». This figure comes from a single season (2005), and the source uses inconsistent denominators (IRF, accessed 16 October 2026).
  • The official site gives -5°C inside; other sources cite -5 to -8°C. Visit Sweden France and some blogs use the wider range. The same site plans a sleeping bag rated to -25°C (icehotel.com and Swedish Lapland, accessed 16 October 2026).

7. Budget: what can be worked out today

There is no complete budget for the 2026-2027 season yet, because no night rate has been published. We can, however, price the following items, each with its source.

  • Day visit: SEK 325 per adult, SEK 225 for a senior, SEK 39 for a child aged 4 to 12 (icehotel.com, valid until December 2026). For a family, the day visit is the clearest item.
  • Guided tour on Viator: from €182.60 per adult for two adults, checked on 16 October 2026. This price covers a guided tour, not a night.
  • Transport from Kiruna: taxi at SEK 450 one way (Routes North, undated). Bus 501 has no published official fare; the only amount (SEK 52) comes from an undated and unverified blog.
  • Night on ice: rate not published for 2026-2027. The blog indications (from SEK 6,000 for an ice room, from SEK 8,000 for an art suite) are not verified and must be confirmed with the hotel before any booking.

8. A possible itinerary, depending on your profile

A typical day starts in Kiruna, by train or plane. From the station, the shuttle connecting with the trains is free. Then bus 501 or a taxi takes you to Jukkasjärvi, after checking the return timetable before you leave. The visit ticket gives access to the ice rooms and the ice bar, without a night. For a night on site, book the transfer the day before, before 3 pm, in winter only.

  • First time: start with the day visit to see the halls, then decide whether a night appeals to you. The official visit ticket lets you see the rooms without committing to a night.
  • As a couple: the common advice is to combine one night on ice with a heated room for the rest of the stay, which limits the time spent in the cold of the ice room.
  • With family: the child ticket (SEK 39 between 4 and 12) makes the visit accessible. Check the validity period, which ends in December 2026 for the published rates.
  • Small budget: the day visit and bus 501 are the most controllable items. Avoid booking a night without an official rate in hand.

9. Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on a blog rate. The 2026 figures come from unverified indications, and a past season is no guide to the next one.
  • Relying on a closing date. For the ice hotel, no closing date is official. The restaurants, however, have published dates: Old Homestead until 28 March 2027.
  • Waiting for the bus on a weekend late afternoon. The last departure from Jukkasjärvi can be at 2:30 pm.
  • Counting on an aurora for a given night. The only available statistic dates from 2005 and does not cover December.
