The Junkanoo in Nassau is scheduled for Saturday 26 December 2026 (Boxing Day) and Friday 1 January 2027 (New Year’s Day), at night and into the early morning. No official programme had been published when this was written: the start time, route and tickets are confirmed shortly before the festival.
Checked on against the sources cited in this article (UNESCO, gov.uk, Royal Caribbean, Bahamian press).
Junkanoo is not just another carnival. It is the most visible street festival in the Bahamas: costumed groups march through Nassau at night, to the sound of cowbells, drums and brass. This guide gathers what is planned for 2026-2027, the times as the sources describe them, the 2025 prices and the precautions to take, with the date each piece of information was checked.
1. Junkanoo, a street festival born in Nassau

A night parade through the streets of Nassau
Junkanoo grew out of the Afro-Bahamian community. Costumed groups parade one after another in front of judges, to the sound of goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles and brass.
UNESCO added Junkanoo to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023, at the 18th session of its Committee (file 01988). The UNESCO page describes a festival practised since at least the 19th century, born when enslaved Africans used their days off to recreate the festivals of their home countries.
What stands out the first time
- A parade, not a show: groups pass in sequence, each with its own theme and music.
- Rankings: judges score the music, costumes and theme, and the total points decide the winner.
- Workshops: costumes are made in workshops called « shacks ».
If you want to explore downtown before the parade, the walking tour below gives you a first look. The Viator listing gives a duration of 180 minutes and a route through five stops.
Junkanoo is not just a tourist parade. For the participants, it fills the end of the year: groups prepare their costumes for months, and the festival is a moment of handing traditions down between generations.
The origin of the word « Junkanoo » is debated. Several theories circulate, but none is established in the sources consulted.
2. Dates for 2026-2027: what is planned, what is not
The two main dates are Boxing Day, 26 December, and New Year’s Day, 1 January. In 2026, 26 December falls on a Saturday, and 1 January 2027 on a Friday. These dates follow the calendar: no official 2026-2027 programme had been published on 24 October 2026.
| Festival | Edition recorded (2025-2026) | Expected date (2026-2027, not announced) |
|---|---|---|
| Boxing Day | Friday 26 December 2025 | Saturday 26 December 2026 |
| New Year’s Day | Thursday 1 January 2026 | Friday 1 January 2027 |
| Junior Junkanoo | January 2024 and January 2025 (police notices) | not announced |
| Summer Festival | summer Saturdays (police notice from 2023) | not announced |
| Pineyard Rush, Grand Bahama | January 2026, ten groups | not announced |
Source: Royal Caribbean, Junkanoo Festival: What to Know; Tribune242, 29 December 2025; police notices from press extracts, checked on 24 October 2026.
The Routard also mentions a parade on 31 December for the 2025-2026 edition. That date is not confirmed, so we do not retain it for 2026-2027.
So keep two rules in mind. The traditional dates are 26 December and 1 January. The time, the route and the grandstands, however, are confirmed shortly before the parade. Follow the announcements of the National Junkanoo Authority and the notices of the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
3. What time should you leave? What the sources say
There is no single start time, and no official time has been published for 2026-2027. The sources read describe a start at night and an ending that sometimes stretches to 8 am or 10 am. Royal Caribbean speaks of « very early morning hours » and notes that the times change from one year to the next.
| Source | Announced start | Announced end | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le Routard | 2 am | 10 am | Page read |
| Royal Caribbean | « very early morning hours » | not specified | Page read |
| Bahamas Tourism Office | around 3 am | around 8 am | Search result extract, page not read (access refused) |
| Travel article | 2 am | 8 am | Search result extract |
| Cruise blog | not specified | until 10 am | Search result extract |
Sources: Le Routard, Carnaval de Junkanoo à Nassau; Royal Caribbean, Junkanoo Festival: What to Know; Bahamas Tourism Office, Junkanoo page (extract); the travel article and the cruise blog were read through search result extracts. Checked on 24 October 2026.
For your plans, the method is simple. If you want to see the first groups, be on site several hours before the announced start, with something to keep you comfortable while you wait. If you are after the finale, plan a late night, since the pace varies from one group to the next.
The length weighs on the crowd, on local businesses, and on visitors who have to head home the next day. In January 2026, former minister Mario Bowleg said the era of parades lasting « 12 to 13 hours » should come to an end (Tribune242, 2 January 2026).
4. How a parade night unfolds
The parade moves group by group. A group enters the street, passes the judges, then makes way for the next one. Between groups, the brass and drums keep going, and the crowd stays along the route.
Competition groups are ranked in divisions A, B and D, and the ranking is based on total points. Subsidies depend on that ranking (see section 9). The « fun groups », by contrast, parade with no ranking at stake, and several of them come from the islands.
5. Grandstand seats and tickets: 2025 prices, buying and pitfalls
Seated places are sold by seat number. In 2025, 8,056 tickets were put on sale for each parade, and the Tribune announced 3,000 extra tickets to smooth out sales (article of 5 December 2025).
| Item | 2025 value |
|---|---|
| Places on sale per parade | 8,056 |
| Lowest price | $27.50 excl. tax, plus VAT |
| Highest price | $250 excl. tax, plus VAT |
| Sales opening | Monday 8 December 2025, at 10 am |
| Sales channels | ALIV Events app and ALIV shops |
Source: Tribune242, 5 December 2025, checked on 24 October 2026.
Prices for 2026-2027 are not published in the sources consulted, and the opening date of sales was not known when this was written. For the next edition, the reference remains the ALIV Events app and the ALIV shops. Amounts found on package-tour sites are not repeated here, since no dated official source backs them up.
Three pitfalls to avoid: the queue when sales open, the choice of seat location, and buying from an unidentified reseller. Use the official channels and keep your confirmation with the seat number.
6. Where to stand on Bay Street
Royal Caribbean notes that the festival is mostly experienced along Bay Street, in downtown Nassau. A grandstand seat fixes you in one spot: if you want to see several teams, walk along the route between two stands, and keep your belongings close to you. This is a local tip, with no official source.
The exact route and the street closures are only known as the festival approaches. For the Junior Junkanoo, police notices announced closures from the afternoon in 2024 and 2025. For Boxing Day 2026, no notice had been found when this was written.
7. Safety: what the travel advice says
The travel advice from the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada recommends caution in Nassau. The extracts read mostly cite crime, and night-time risk.
| Country | Level or wording | Last updated | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | « No travel can be guaranteed safe » (no numbered level in the extract read) | 28 May 2026 (advice page) | See the official advice |
| United States | Level 2, « exercise increased caution » | 28 July 2026 (extract) | Crime (search result extract) |
| Canada | « Exercise a high degree of caution » | not verified (news from September 2025) | Crime in Nassau and Freeport (extract) |
Sources: gov.uk, Bahamas travel advice (page read); travel.state.gov, Bahamas advisory (search result extract); Canadian advice (search result extract), checked on 24 October 2026.
Parades draw large crowds, which also suits pickpockets. Stay together, keep your belongings on you, and avoid travelling alone late at night. For the way back, book your transfer the day before rather than counting on finding a taxi on the spot. These are field tips, with no official source.
8. Entry, paperwork and health
Passport. The UK « Entry requirements » page requires a passport that expires at least six months after the planned departure date. This is the UK rule: check the requirement that applies to your nationality with your own government.
9. What has changed since Boxing Day 2025
Boxing Day 2025 was marked by major delays. According to the Tribune of 31 December 2025, Grand Marshal Dwight Rolle was removed, and disqualification for lateness has been replaced by point deductions.
The National Junkanoo Authority was created by a law of March 2026 and is chaired by Dr Christopher Curry. According to the Tribune of 8 September 2026, its 2026-2027 strategic plan is being finalised.
For the 2026-2027 season, the same article reports amounts by division: $40,000 for group A and $20,000 for group B. The total envelope is presented differently across sources, and we do not repeat it here.
| Rank | Group | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | One Family | 621 |
| 2 | The Way Forward Valley Boys | 578 |
| 3 | Saxons | 533 |
| 4 | World Famous Valley Boys 1958 | 528 |
| 5 | Roots | 506 |
Source: Tribune242, 29 December 2025, checked on 24 October 2026. In division B, Colours won with 586 points.
10. Budget: the costs to plan for
Your budget comes down to three items: the seat, accommodation and getting around, plus whatever activities you add to the day. The figures below are dated and sourced, or flagged as missing.
- Grandstand seat: in 2025, from $27.50 to $250 excl. tax, plus VAT. Add the VAT to your calculation, and check the final price at the time of purchase.
- Activity for the day: the walking tour with food tasting mentioned above is sold for €89.92 per adult on Viator, based on two adults, checked on 24 October 2026.
- Accommodation: no reliable rate was found for this article. Compare accommodation for your exact travel dates.
- Transport: taxis and buses. Agree on the fare before you get in, or book your transfer the day before.
11. Depending on your travel style
With family. The main parades run very late, and children will struggle through a whole night. The Junior Junkanoo, in January, is a parade designed for the youngest, with street closures from the afternoon. For older children, choose a seated spot, bring hearing protection, and plan a quiet slot for getting back.
As a couple. Aim for one specific group, or one division, rather than the whole parade. To enjoy the festival without the crowd, book a seated spot and note in advance the group you want to follow.
On a tight budget. Grandstand seats are paid. The sources read do not document any paid route outside the grandstands: check on site. A daytime walking tour of downtown remains a more economical way to discover Nassau.
For a first time. Arrive early, bring water and something warm for the quieter hours, and keep a backup plan in case the crowd gets too dense. Don’t try to see everything: the festival is best taken in pieces.
With reduced mobility. The sources consulted give no information on the accessibility of the grandstands or the route. Contact the organisers before booking.
Cruise passenger. A cruise blog says a ship arriving early on 26 December lets you see part of the parade. Port call times for 2026 were not found: check them before planning your day ashore.
12. Elsewhere in the islands: Grand Bahama, Abaco and the Summer Festival
Junkanoo is not limited to Nassau. In Grand Bahama, the Pineyard Rush brought together ten groups in January 2026. According to the Tribune of 13 January 2026, unofficial results give Superstar Rockers the win in division A and Showtime in division B.
On Green Turtle Cay, in the Abaco Islands, a New Year’s festival takes place in New Plymouth (Tourism Today). It is not the Junkanoo of Nassau: it has its own dates and its own organisation.
The Summer Festival offers lighter versions on some summer Saturdays. The 2023 police notice covered Bay Street, between Charlotte Street and East Street, from 2 pm. The 2026 dates have not been confirmed.
If you are comparing with another major costumed parade, our guide to the Venice Carnival 2027 covers the tours to book between parades.
What other guides don’t tell you
Here are four points checked against official sources or the Bahamian press, which we did not find in the travel guides we read.
- The origin dates to the 19th century, not the 16th. The UNESCO file places the origin at the start of the 19th century. Le Routard mentions the 16th century, without citing a source. UNESCO, file 01988 (checked on 24 October 2026).
- Lateness disqualification is no longer the reference penalty. After Boxing Day 2025, the Grand Marshal was removed and point deductions replaced disqualification. Tribune242, 31 December 2025 (checked on 24 October 2026).
- A national authority now runs the festival. The National Junkanoo Authority, created by a law of March 2026, has a 2026-2027 strategic plan being finalised. Tribune242, 8 September 2026 (checked on 24 October 2026).
- The 2026-2027 subsidies are published by division. The Tribune gives $40,000 for group A and $20,000 for group B, without a total retained here. Tribune242, 8 September 2026 (checked on 24 October 2026).
