Lewes Bonfire 2026 takes place on Thursday 5 November, with processions running from about 5pm to 1am. The big procession passes around 9pm and the main bonfire is lit around 10pm. Non-stop trains to Lewes start at 5pm that day, and the last departure from the town is at 5.02pm. The processions can be watched for free from the streets, but access to the bonfire sites is paid and capacity is limited. The authorities ask people who don’t live in Lewes not to come.

Lewes Bonfire is one of the best-known bonfire celebrations in Britain, and the 2026 edition is decided almost entirely by the timetable. The multi-agency statement published on 18 September 2026 by the county authorities, the fire service, the police and Southern Railway expects bigger crowds, because the night falls on a Thursday. For a visitor, the choices are made before the evening starts: where to stay, how to get there and when to head back.

1. Lewes Bonfire 2026: date and how the night unfolds

The 2026 edition falls on Thursday 5 November. Processions start around 5pm and run until about 1am. More than thirty processions are announced, with brass bands, torches, fire crosses, flags and large effigies carried through the streets.

  • Around 5pm: processions start in the town centre.
  • Around 9pm: the big procession.
  • Around 10pm: the main bonfire is lit.
  • Around 1am: the night ends.

The effigies stay secret until they join the procession. The 2026 themes have not been published, so there is no point looking for a target in advance. The full programme, procession order included, is on the official Lewes Bonfire Celebrations website, which is updated every year.

2. Brighton or London: where to stay and how to get there

Brighton, a base for the day of 5 November

€102.08 per person About 6h30 Departs from Brighton Daytime, before the evening

Brighton is the more practical base for a short stay. The city has far more accommodation than the small town of Lewes, and the train link between the two is short. If you want to fill the day of 5 November before the evening, a small-group tour in a luxury minibus leaves Brighton for the South Downs and the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs. It is not a trip to Lewes, and it does not bring you back to Lewes in the evening.

3. Trains: the way there from London, and above all the way back

From London Victoria, trains reach Lewes in about an hour, according to ticket aggregators. The problem is the return. According to the 2026 statement, the last departures from Victoria to these stations are at 3.24pm (towards Eastbourne) and 3.54pm (towards Ore).

  • Non-stop trains to Lewes, Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde and Southease from 5pm.
  • Last departures from Lewes: 4.44pm (Brighton), 4.55pm (London Victoria), 4.59pm (Ore) and 5.02pm (Seaford).
  • Service resumes on the morning of Friday 6 November. The exact time is not given in the sources we checked.

These times are the same as in 2025. Check them on the Southern timetable when you book. No 2026 fare is published in the sources we checked, so ask Southern or National Rail.

No replacement bus or shuttle has been announced so far for the evening of 5 November. The main roads close from 4.45pm, including the A27 at the Ashcombe roundabout, the A275 at Offham and the C7 at Kingston Road. For a visitor, driving is not an option in the evening. If the evening return doesn’t suit you and you are in London, our guide to free fireworks in London for Bonfire Night suggests another evening.

4. Tickets: what is free and what isn’t

Watching the procession is free from the streets of the town. The bonfire sites run by the societies, however, are paid. Tickets are bought in advance, either from the societies themselves or from the Lewes Tourist Information Centre.

  • Limited capacity: places can sell out before the day.
  • 2026 price: not published in the sources we checked. Check the official website before you travel.
  • Buying on the door: some sources say it is possible, but nothing confirms it. Don’t plan on it.

Guides suggest bringing cash, as the societies sell their own merchandise. No source confirms that cards are accepted at the stalls. For food, the pubs are very busy, and some reserve their rooms for private parties.

5. Safety: the authorities’ message for 2026

The statement of 18 September 2026 is unambiguous. The authorities ask people who don’t live in Lewes not to come, and to go to a local bonfire event in their own area, following the « Choose Local » principle.

  • The event is not suitable for children, young families or dogs, because of the crowd density, the layout of the town, the noise and the smoke.

To gauge the crowds, recent editions give a rough idea: around 40,000 people in 2024 according to ITV, and a figure of the same order for 2025 according to Regency Radio. Injury counts vary from one year to the next. In 2024, ITV reported 46 people treated, 3 of them taken to hospital. For 2025, a single regional outlet puts it at around 82 people treated and 7 taken to hospital. That figure is provisional and has not been consolidated by the authorities.

6. Entry formalities: the ETA for EU visitors

EU nationals, including French travellers, need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to travel to the UK by air, Eurostar or ferry. GOV.UK lists a fee of £20. The application is made online, before you travel.

7. History and societies: what the night commemorates

The night brings together two memories. The first is the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The second is the burning of seventeen Protestant martyrs from Lewes between 1555 and 1557, under Mary I. The fire crosses carried through the town recall these martyrs, before a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial.

The celebrations are run by independent bonfire societies. The seven official societies are Cliffe, Commercial Square, Lewes Borough, Southover, South Street, Waterloo and Nevill Juvenile. Nevill Juvenile was founded in 1967 by two residents and now has more than 400 members. Each society keeps its own themes, costumes and traditions, so the visitor sees seven celebrations running side by side.
