For Lucca Comics & Games 2026 (28 October to 1 November), sleep in Pisa rather than Lucca. The regional train takes 30 to 38 minutes, while two nights in Lucca cost an average of €800 in 2024 against €175 outside the festival. You need a ticket (€26.50 to €34.50 for a day pass) and a wristband, which you should order to your home address by 16 October to skip the welcome desk. Head back before 5pm or after 8.30pm.
The 60th Lucca Comics & Games is won or lost on logistics as much as in the halls. The festival takes over Lucca’s walled historic centre, with more than 40,000 m² of pavilions and an announced cap of 80,000 entries a day. Accommodation, the single train station and zone-by-zone entry checks cause most of the headaches. Here’s how to get around them, with what is confirmed for 2026 and what still isn’t as of 8 October.
Where to stay: Pisa rather than Lucca

Pisa, the easiest home base when flying in from the UK
Inside Lucca itself, there’s very little to book and prices soar. According to Altroconsumo‘s survey, a two-night weekend cost an average of €800 in 2024 against €175 outside the festival, with €794 for a B&B in Lucca and €443 for a hotel (€212 outside the festival). An Airbnb came to €393 in Lucca against €167 in Pisa. No reliable 2026 prices have been published: treat these figures as a dated ballpark, compare them with today’s rates on the booking platforms, and favour free cancellation.
Pisa has another advantage: the airport is linked to the station by the PisaMover (around €6.50, 5 to 8 minutes), and the regional train then drops you in Lucca in 30 to 38 minutes for about €3.90, according to Trainline. From London, Ryanair and easyJet fly direct to Pisa from Stansted, Gatwick and Luton, in roughly two hours. Fares in late October swing a lot depending on the date, so check your exact days.
The alternatives, and their limits
- Viareggio and Versilia: you get the seaside as a bonus, but Viareggio was over 90% occupied in 2023 according to La Nazione. In Lido di Camaiore, the Pineta Mare hotel lists a Lucca Comics 2026 offer at €120 to €221 a night depending on the room, with one bus an hour to Lucca.
- Florence: 1 h 04 at best, more often 1 h 30 to 1 h 40, which makes evening returns fragile.
- Montecatini Terme: on the Florence-Lucca-Viareggio line, with plenty of hotels. I don’t have a firm price for this festival.
- Motorhomes: wild camping and roadside camping are banned by the city decision of 1 September 2026.
Getting around: take the train, not the car

Lucca station, buses, the ZTL: what’s confirmed and what isn’t
Lucca station sits on Piazzale Ricasoli, outside the ramparts, and only receives regional trains: no Frecciarossa, no Italo. During the festival, Trenitalia boosts the service. In 2025 it added 140 regional trains, or more than 400,000 seats, announced on 24 October. The 2026 press release isn’t out yet: keep an eye on trenitalia.com in the last days of October, and don’t count on the 2025 figure.
Italo, the official mobility partner, offers a single ticket by train to Florence Santa Maria Novella and then Itabus to Lucca, with two dedicated shuttles, according to the Italo blog. Regional tickets have no reserved seat: buy them in advance on the app rather than at the counter, and validate a paper ticket before boarding.
Driving, only if you have no choice
- 2025 precedent, not a 2026 rule: under ordinance no. 2702 of 20 October 2025, the centre’s ZTL (limited traffic zone) was closed to all vehicles from 9am to 7pm, including two-wheelers, taxis and NCC hire cars. The 2026 ordinance is expected around 20 October: check comune.lucca.it.
- Car parks: around 5,300 official spaces in 2025, to book at eventi.parcheggilucca.it. 2026 event rates aren’t published, and the zones nearest the entrances fill up first.
- Taxis: Consorzio Tassisti Lucchesi on +39 0583 333434, but nothing guarantees they can reach the centre during the closure.
Ticket, wristband and queues: what really saves time

The catch: a ticket alone won’t get you in
You need a ticket and a wristband (the braccialetto). According to the official site, a day pass runs from €26.50 on Wednesday to €34.50 on Saturday (€29.50 on Thursday, €33.50 on Friday and Sunday). Multi-day passes go up to €58.50 for two days (Saturday-Sunday), €83.50 for four days and €95 for five. Sales go through TicketOne, and Friday and Saturday were almost sold out by mid-September: check availability for your day on the ticket site, as this goes out of date fast.
You collect the wristband at one of the five welcome desks, open from 6.30am to 6.30pm from 28 October to 1 November, or have it sent to your home with the « Salta il Welcome Desk » option. It costs €9.99 for a one- or two-day ticket and is free with passes of three days or more, to be ordered by the morning of 16 October (the cut-off time varies by source, so don’t push it). Reports from 2025 range from 5 minutes to more than 3 hours of waiting at the desks.
The levers, from most to least effective
- Order the wristband to your home: you skip the heaviest queue. Otherwise, go to the Baluardo San Regolo desk on Tuesday 27 October from 4pm to 7pm, or at 6.30am.
- Buy a dated ticket in advance: the cap of 80,000 entries a day applies.
- Aim for Wednesday or Thursday: cheaper and less crowded than the weekend.
- Arrive before 9am: each zone has its own entry check, and queues build there by mid-morning.
- Shift your meals: eat at 11.30am or after 3pm, and book dinner early (budget €28 to €44 per person).
- Avoid the station rush from 6.30pm to 7.30pm: leave before 5pm or after 8.30pm.
- Pack light: there are security checks, and left luggage costs about €5 per bag at the station, about €2.50 on Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.
A festival spread across town: where the queues are

Pavilions across the city, ramparts as a ring road
Lucca Comics & Games isn’t a closed fairground: the pavilions are spread across the historic centre, with an entry check for each zone. The comics pavilion sits on Piazza Napoleone, the games pavilion on Piazza Carducci, and Piazza San Michele is the cosplay hub. Japan Town is at the Polo Fiere in Sorbano, with more than 120 exhibitors and a free shuttle from the centre. The 2026 edition leans into video games: the big publishers’ stands are likely to be the busiest, but no queue has been measured so far.
- Start far from the centre: Japan Town or the Palasport, while the central pavilions are already full of queues.
- Use the ramparts: the loop is about 4.2 km, or 45 to 60 minutes on foot, and the bastions host events and a welcome desk.
- Have a no-badge plan B: the streets, squares and ramparts stay open to everyone, and the main exhibitions are free, including « Lucca Legacy » at Palazzo Guinigi, open since 3 October.
- Download the LuccaCG Assistant app and use the official interactive map: precise opening hours for the sales pavilions aren’t confirmed here.
Budget: an estimate for two days from the UK
This is a Pixidia estimate, built on reference fares and 2024 surveys, to be cross-checked against today’s prices. Excluding flights, a two-day stay based in Pisa comes to around €300 to €450, against €600 to €1,000 if you sleep inside the walls.
- Return flight London-Pisa: varies widely by date, so check the fare for your days (not included in the totals above).
- PisaMover and Pisa-Lucca return trains: about €21.
- 2-day ticket: €40.50 to €58.50, plus €9.99 for home delivery of the wristband.
- Two nights in Pisa: about €170 to €300.
- Meals and left luggage: €28 to €44 for dinner, €2.50 to €5 per bag per day.
