Eight Meteora excursions, seven of them leaving from Kalambaka or Kastraki, are bookable from €35 per adult (based on 2 people). All can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before departure. The monasteries switch to winter hours on 1 November. For a first visit, choose the half-day tour (option 3).

Checked on on the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

Kalambaka is the most convenient base for Meteora. You sleep there, come back in the evening, and most excursions pick you up at your hotel, in Kalambaka or in Kastraki, the neighboring village at the foot of the rocks.

We checked the excursions leaving from Kalambaka and Kastraki on the Viator partner API, for two adults and for the window from 5 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Of the 11 Meteora products that clear the quality bar (a rating of at least 4.7 out of 5 and at least 100 reviews), eight were selected, including one excursion leaving from Athens, for variety of formats and suppliers. The top-rated is the electric bike tour, at 4.99 out of 5. The most reviewed is the Badovas sunset tour, with 732 reviews. The small-group hike from Visit Meteora (4.92 out of 5, 503 reviews) combines walking and hotel transfer best.

Why Kalambaka is the right base for Meteora

The site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under number 455, since 1988, as a mixed site, meaning it is recognized for both its natural and its cultural values (UNESCO listing for site 455). Visit Greece gives 1998, a date that does not match the official listing. Orthodox monasteries sit on top of rock pillars. The same site says six of the twenty-four historic monasteries are still inhabited, which sets this place apart from a simple landscape: you visit places of worship that are still in use.

Kalambaka is a small town at the foot of the rocks, and Kastraki is the neighboring village. Viator does not list Kalambaka as a separate destination: products leaving from either one are grouped under « Meteora ». It is the same area, so the list covers both departure points.

1. Small-group hike and Ypapanti monastery

Rating 4.92 (503 reviews) 4 hours €35 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation

This is the card to read first if you want to walk rather than watch the scenery from a minibus. Transport leaves from your hotel, in Kalambaka or Kastraki, in an air-conditioned minibus, and an English-speaking mountain guide leads the group to the hidden Ypapanti monastery. The product is open on all 60 days of the window checked. Monastery entry is not included, and you should bring walking shoes. The guide speaks English: check this before booking if you do not speak it.

  • Hotel pickup in Kalambaka or Kastraki, air-conditioned minibus
  • Water included, English-speaking mountain guide
  • Monastery entry not included

2. Sunset, Saint Stephen Monastery and Badovas caves

Rating 4.88 (732 reviews) 4 hours €35 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation

This is the only option in the selection built around the sunset. The round-trip transfer leaves from your hotel, and the route goes inside Saint Stephen Monastery, through the Byzantine church of the Virgin Mary and into the hermit caves of Badovas. An audio guide in several languages, including French, accompanies the visit. With 732 reviews, it is the most reviewed option in the selection. The format has one drawback, the weather: the operator can cancel in bad weather, and free cancellation runs until 24 hours before departure. Meals, drinks and tips are not included, and you should bring something warm for the sunset.

  • Round-trip transfer from Kalambaka or Kastraki
  • Visit inside Saint Stephen Monastery and the Badovas caves
  • Multilingual audio guide, cancellation possible for bad weather

3. Half-day monasteries tour with hotel transfer

Rating 4.83 (354 reviews) 4 hours €35 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation

This is the most classic format in the selection: a half day, a hotel transfer and a visit to the monasteries. The round-trip transfer is included, with onboard Wi-Fi and water. What sets it apart is the language: the guided visit is in English only, and a free audio guide covers French, Spanish, German, Italian and other languages. The guide does not go inside the monasteries; the audio guides explain the sites from within. Entry fees for the three monasteries are not included. The supplier is Visit Meteora, as for the hike and the sunset tour, but the route and the guide differ.

  • Round-trip hotel transfer, onboard Wi-Fi and water
  • English-speaking guide, free audio guide in several languages
  • Entry fees for the three monasteries not included

4. Morning panoramic tour, three monasteries visited

Rating 4.80 (332 reviews) 4 hours €35 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation

This tour focuses on viewpoints. The luxury minibus, air-conditioned and equipped with free Wi-Fi, stops several times for views and photos, and a local guide, the tour leader, comments on the route. Of the six monasteries on the circuit, three are visited inside: if one matters to you, ask the operator before booking. Departure and return are at your hotel, in Kalambaka or Kastraki. The pace is the main selling point: you see a lot from the road, and visits inside are limited to three sites. Meals, non-alcoholic drinks and monastery entry fees are not included.

  • Panoramic stops for views and photos
  • Three monasteries visited inside, out of six on the route
  • Local tour-leader guide, cancellation possible for bad weather

5. Electric bike ride to the monastery

Rating 4.99 (148 reviews) 4 hours €44 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation Open 25 days out of 60

If you would rather ride than sit in a minibus, this is the only bike option in the selection, and the best rated: 4.99 out of 5 for 148 reviews. Departure is next to the Meteora e-Bike shop, near the roundabout of the Kalambaka tourist office. The key point is the date: in the window checked, the product is open on 25 of the 60 days, between 5 and 30 November. Outside that period it is closed. The tour allows cancellation in case of bad weather. Visit Greece recommends autumn. If your stay falls in December, this option is not for you.

  • Electric bike, helmet, reflective vest, poncho if needed
  • Water and local snacks included
  • Monastery entry not included

6. Private day: all the monasteries, English-speaking driver

Rating 4.96 (128 reviews) 6 hours €110 per adult (base 2) Private tour

This is the full-day format in Kalambaka, made to measure. A local English-speaking driver and a recent vehicle pick you up at your hotel, and the route is tailored to cover all the monasteries in a six-hour day. It is also the most expensive option in the selection outside Athens. The price reflects the customization, not the content. Meals and drinks are not included, and a licensed guide can be added as an option. Confirmation is immediate but can become manual, within a window of up to 2,880 minutes, or 48 hours: do not lock in an important day on this product without a margin.

This is the only option in the selection for people staying in Athens who want to see the monasteries in one day. A private vehicle and a driver pick you up at your hotel, at the Piraeus port or at Athens airport. Lunch is included, with a traditional cuisine option. The duration varies from 12 to 14 hours depending on the road, which makes it the longest in the selection. It is also the most expensive of the eight: €303 per person for two adults, so €606 in total. Monastery entry fees are excluded, and the licensed tour guide is not included. The product is not open on seven of the sixty days checked: confirm your date before locking in your trip.

Practical tips on site

Monastery opening hours in November

Visit Meteora sets the switch to winter hours on 1 November and the return to summer hours on 1 April. The booking window starts on 5 November, so it falls almost entirely within winter hours. The table reproduces the hours published on the site, with closing days. The source only specifies the season for Roussanou; for the other monasteries, reconfirm on site, as sites can change their schedules without notice.

Opening hours and closing days of the Meteora monasteries, according to Visit Meteora (checked 22 October 2026, to be reconfirmed on site)
MonasteryHours listedClosing day
Great Meteoron9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.Tuesday
Varlaam9 a.m. to 4 p.m.Friday
Roussanou9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in winter; 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in summerWednesday
Holy Trinity10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Thursday
Saint Stephen9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., then 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.Monday
Saint Nicholas Anapausas9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Friday

The six monasteries cited by the reference source. A Czech travel guide published in 2026 gives the same closing day for the Great Meteoron. These data do not replace the notice displayed on site on the day of your visit.

Entry and dress code

The reference entry fee is €5 per person per monastery, according to Visit Meteora; this amount also appears in the exclusions of several Viator options. One listing consulted gives €3: check the price displayed at the entrance. The dress code is strict: shoulders covered, skirt below the knee or long trousers, and no tank tops.

Getting there from Athens

There is no direct train between Athens and Kalambaka. The line that ran through Palaiofarsalos has been cut since the Daniel and Elias storms of September 2023, according to Visit Meteora, which mentions a reopening in mid-2027 at the earliest, with no firm date. Older pages on the same site, dated January 2024, announced a restart for late 2026 or early 2025: that second date has passed and those pages are no longer current. The status should be reconfirmed with the Greek rail operator before departure.

The intercity bus from Larissis station in Athens remains the realistic option. Visit Meteora describes a departure around 8 a.m. and an arrival around 12:30 p.m., and cites a one-day bus excursion at €68, down from €99 previously. That price dates from 2025: treat it as a rough guide only, and confirm schedules at the ticket window or on the operator’s site. Between Palaiofarsalos and Kalambaka, a bus covers the leg in about two hours. If you do not want to depend on a bus timetable, option 7 leaves from the capital, at the cost of 12 to 14 hours on the road.

Walking from Kastraki

A classic loop starting from Kastraki covers about 7 km, for nearly 3 hours of walking and about 330 m of elevation gain, according to a hiking site. These orders of magnitude help you choose without replacing an up-to-date map: bring water, closed shoes and a map.

Profiles and precautions

For a first visit, the small-group half-day (option 3) or the hike (option 1) gives an overview without a full day. For a couple wanting a special moment, the sunset tour (option 2) is the only option in the selection built around the light. For a family, the VIP minibus (option 8) or the panoramic tour (option 4) combine a vehicle with stops. For reduced mobility, ask the operator about the accessibility of each monastery before booking.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using summer hours: from 1 November, winter hours apply (Visit Meteora); for Roussanou, closing moves from 4:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Arriving without covered shoulders or in a tank top: the monasteries’ dress code does not allow it.
  • Counting the excursion price without entry: most options exclude monastery tickets.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to visit Meteora from Kalambaka?

The excursions in this selection range from 4 to 14 hours. A four-hour half day is enough for two or three monasteries and a first look at the site. A full six-hour day, like option 6, lets you see all the monasteries, with a driver who adapts to the group’s pace. For an excursion from Athens, allow 12 to 14 hours on the road. Check the duration stated on each listing before booking, as it depends on the route.

Is there a direct train between Athens and Kalambaka?

No. According to Visit Meteora, the rail link was cut by the storms of September 2023, and its reopening has no firm date, at the earliest around mid-2027. The intercity bus from Larissis station in Athens is the most realistic option. Check the status of the link with the Greek rail operator before you leave, as the situation may still change.

How much does monastery entry cost?

The reference fee is €5 per person per monastery, according to Visit Meteora; one listing consulted gives €3. This ticket is not included in most options in this article: the hike, the half-day tour, the panoramic tour, the e-bike ride, the private day and the VIP minibus all exclude it. For three monasteries, allow €15 per person, and check the price displayed at the entrance on the day of your visit.

Which monasteries are open in November?

The six monasteries cited by Visit Meteora publish winter hours from 1 November, each with a closing day: the Great Meteoron on Tuesday, Varlaam and Saint Nicholas Anapausas on Friday, Roussanou on Wednesday, the Holy Trinity on Thursday and Saint Stephen on Monday. The table in the practical tips section gives the published hours, with the season specified only for Roussanou. If you plan a visit on a closing day, choose another monastery, and reconfirm the hours on site.

Do you need a guide to visit the monasteries?

The monasteries are better understood with commentary. Several options include an English-speaking guide: the hike, the VIP minibus, and an English-speaking driver for the private day. In the small-group half-day, the guided visit is in English only, and the free audio guide covers other languages, including French. If language is a barrier, read the guide note in each option before booking.

Which excursion should you choose for a first visit?

For a first visit, the small-group half-day with hotel transfer (option 3) covers the essentials for €35 per person. If you want to walk, take the hike to Ypapanti monastery (option 1). If you are staying in Athens and a day on the road does not bother you, option 7 is the only option leaving from the capital.
