The Metz Christmas market 2026 runs from Friday 20 November to Wednesday 30 December 2026, with 130 chalets according to the Tourist Office, across five squares. Entry is free and the market is closed on 25 December. The free Sentier des Lanternes opens on 22 November according to the official page (20 November according to Moselle Attractivité). Hours are provisional.
Checked on against the official sources cited (noelametz.fr, Metz Tourist Office, Moselle Attractivité).
Metz doesn’t gather its Christmas market in one place: you walk it, square by square. For the 2026 edition, the market runs from Friday 20 November to Wednesday 30 December, with 130 chalets according to the Metz Tourist Office. The Sentier des Lanternes, a free light trail, has its own calendar and its own organiser. This guide brings together the confirmed dates, the provisional hours and the points where our sources disagree, so you can plan your visit without nasty surprises.
1. A market spread across five city-centre squares

Five squares, five roles
The Metz Christmas market takes over five squares in the historic centre: République, Saint-Louis, Saint-Jacques, de la Comédie and d’Armes (Jacques-François Blondel). According to the Metz Tourist Office listing, entry is free. The squares are close to one another, but you can’t see them all from each other: plan your route in the order that suits you, rather than judging the whole market from a single square.
Highlights
- République Square: a large illuminated Christmas tree, a village of chalets and the City Skyliner, the 81 m panoramic tower the press announced in 2024.
- Saint-Louis Square: arcades, craft work, mulled wine and a medieval atmosphere.
- Place d’Armes: a big wheel set up at the foot of Saint-Étienne Cathedral.
We could not verify a guided tour of Metz during the market.
Saint-Jacques, for children
According to the call for stallholders reported by Gazette Moselle on 1 June 2026, Place Saint-Jacques is reserved in 2026 for rides and chalets aimed at young children. Older guides still describe it as a simple space of food chalets: that’s one difference to know before you come with kids.
La Comédie, for the table
Place de la Comédie hosts the food area. According to the official practical page, it opens Monday to Friday from 5 pm to 11 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 11 pm. It is the square where you can stay latest, and the one where the hours differ most from the others.
2. Dates and hours for 2026: what is confirmed, what is provisional
The market opens on Friday 20 November 2026 and closes on Wednesday 30 December. It is closed on 25 December. The hours published on the official practical page are provisional: they may still change before opening, so it is wise to check them again the week you travel.
| Square | Usual hours | Christmas Eve (24 December) | 30 December |
|---|---|---|---|
| République, Saint-Louis, Saint-Jacques, d’Armes | Sunday to Thursday 11 am to 9 pm; Friday and Saturday 11 am to 10 pm | Closes at 4 pm | Closes at 8 pm |
| Comédie (food area) | Monday to Friday 5 pm to 11 pm; Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 11 pm | Not specified | Not specified |

Early closures
On Christmas Eve, the République, Saint-Louis, Saint-Jacques and d’Armes squares close at 4 pm. On 30 December, closing is brought forward to 8 pm. For Place de la Comédie, the hours for these two days are not specified. Guides often repeat the usual hours, which run until 9 pm or 10 pm: that’s the mistake to avoid if you plan to spend the last evening of the market on the squares.
3. The Sentier des Lanternes: a separate trail, run by the Département

The Sentier des Lanternes, Square Boufflers
The Sentier des Lanternes is a light trail set up in Square Boufflers, behind the law courts and close to République Square. It is organised by the Moselle Department, not by the City. Moselle Attractivité announces its 15th edition for 2026. The press reports more than 2,000 lanterns for the 2025 edition, which welcomed 246,491 visitors according to the Department, up 24%.
Highlights
- Free entry, with no booking announced in the official sources we read.
- A winter fairy-tale theme, in which Saint Nicholas features in the presentations of the edition.
- Evening hours: 5 pm to 8 pm Sunday to Thursday, 5 pm to 9 pm on Friday and Saturday (provisional).

Why two opening dates?
Two sources disagree. The noelametz.fr practical page gives 22 November, as do Info-Lux in its article updated on 19 October 2026 and Explore Grand Est. The Moselle Attractivité listing gives 20 November. We go with 22 November, which comes from the official practical page, and we flag the gap: confirm the date before you go.
4. Chalets, pyramid and charity chalets: numbers to read with caution
According to the Metz Tourist Office, the market has 130 chalets for 2026. Other sources put it at « more than 120 », in a call for community applications from July 2026, or at « more than 150 », in a private events listing. We go with 130, the figure from the Tourist Office listing, without having counted the chalets ourselves.
The Christmas pyramid on République Square
A Christmas pyramid is planned on République Square. On 22 September 2026, the City published a tender notice for its operation from 20 November to 30 December 2026; offers were due by noon on 2 October 2026. The notice states that sales there are limited to Christmas items. We have not found who won the contract, so we do not name any operator.

Three charity chalets, renewed until 2028
On 10 July 2026, Metz city council agreed to make three chalets available free of charge, as part of a scheme run by the CCAS (the city’s social action centre) for associations. One of these three chalets is accessible to people with reduced mobility. The resolution provides for renewal in 2026, 2027 and 2028, and the 2026 rules were published on 24 July. The exact location of the accessible chalet was not confirmed in the sources we read.

5. Budget: free entry, with attraction prices not yet published
Entry to the squares is free, as is the Sentier des Lanternes. Your budget therefore goes on rides, food and transport. The 2026 prices for the big wheel, the City Skyliner, the carousels and the Father Christmas floating sleigh are not published at the time of writing. We therefore give no figure for these attractions.
| Item | 2026 price | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Market entry | Free | Confirmed by the Tourist Office |
| Sentier des Lanternes | Free | Confirmed by Moselle Attractivité |
| Big wheel, Place d’Armes | Not published | Not published |
| City Skyliner, République Square | Not published | Not published |
| Carousels and rides | Not published | Not published |
| Father Christmas floating sleigh | Not published (days and times « to come ») | Not published |

Where to spend, where to save
Chalet food prices are not published in our sources, so your food budget will have to be judged on site. Some older reviews mention mulled wine and hot chocolate, and the stall listings show Lorraine specialities. With entry and the Sentier both free, most of your spending goes on food and attractions: you can also spread your visit over several evenings.
For accommodation, we found no hotel rates for December 2026 in the sources we read.
6. Getting to Metz and parking
By train
For Paris, we did not check any journey time in the sources we read: look up Paris–Metz times for your dates on SNCF Connect. From Luxembourg, allow about 50 to 65 minutes by TER via Thionville, according to the general Metz–Luxembourg timetables on SNCF Connect. No seasonal service is identified for the market: check the exact times for your dates before you book.
By car and bus
Park-and-ride car parks (P+R) and the Le Met’ bus network are free on Saturdays and Sundays until 27 December 2026, according to the official practical page. On weekdays, free travel depends on showing a transport ticket validated that day when you leave the car park. City-centre car park rates during the market are not published, and the 2026 Le Met’ fare was not found in a readable official source.

7. Depending on your trip: family, tight budget, first visit
- With family: the Sentier des Lanternes is free, and Place Saint-Jacques is reserved for young children in 2026. One blog recommends doing the Sentier early, before 8 pm, because the queues grow late in the evening: that is a single opinion, not attendance data.
- On a tight budget: entry and the Sentier are free. Most of the budget goes on food and attractions, whose prices are not published.
- First time: follow the route suggested in section 1 (Place d’Armes, Saint-Louis, then Place de la Comédie to finish, open until 11 pm, provisional hours).
- Food lovers: quiche lorraine, flammekueche, Metz boudin and pâté lorrain appear in the squares’ listings, with no official source for each stall.
- Reduced mobility: one of the three charity chalets is accessible. The condition of the paving and paths is not documented: ask the Tourist Office before you come.
Three mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up the market’s opening date with the Sentier’s (section 3).
- Relying on the usual hours on 24 and 30 December (section 2).
- Buying an attraction based on an old price, as 2026 prices are not published.
8. Saint Nicholas and Céleste: two separate events
Saint Nicholas is celebrated during the market, with a parade announced for the feast-day Sunday. The dates are not settled. The City’s agenda, picked up by listing sites, gives 5 and 6 December « subject to change », while the official noelametz.fr page gives 6 and 7 December. The detailed programme has not been published. Check the date before you plan your visit.
Céleste is not the market. It is a video-mapping show projected onto the façade of the Temple Neuf, from 18 November 2026 to 7 February 2027. Tickets range from €10 to €33 depending on category and day, according to the press and the ticket office. We have not checked these prices on the organiser’s website.
What other guides don’t tell you
Two gaps with the agendas and guides we read on 23 October 2026:
- Start date of the Sentier des Lanternes. The official page gives 22 November (section 3), while several guides start it with the market, on 20 November. noelametz.fr, practical information (accessed 23 October 2026).
- Early closures. Guides repeat the usual hours, while the squares close earlier on 24 and 30 December (section 2). noelametz.fr, practical information (accessed 23 October 2026).
