The Montier Photo Festival 2026 runs from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 November 2026 in Montier-en-Der, across 16 sites according to an official page dated 2020. A day pass costs €18, the three-day pass €40, and under-14s get in free. The cranes’ own celebration is in October.
Checked on : prices, venues and opening hours come from official pages dated 2020, to be reconfirmed at the box office.
The Montier Photo Festival drew 43,458 visitors in 2025 according to Festival en France, and around 44,000 according to HelloAsso. The 29th edition opens on 19 November 2026. Here are the dates, ticket prices, exhibition sites, and what the festival does, or doesn’t, owe to the cranes that visit the lake.
1. Getting to Montier-en-Der: car, train and shuttles
Driving is the simplest option. According to the festival’s « how to get there » page, Troyes is a 1-hour drive away, Nancy 1 hour 30 and Reims 1 hour 45. No train station serves Montier-en-Der directly. From Paris, Vitry-le-François can be reached in about two hours by TER regional train, according to an unofficial timetable aggregator. You then need a shuttle or an on-demand minibus to reach the sites.
On site: shuttles and parking
- Free shuttles between the sites, by reservation, Thursday to Sunday.
- Ticéa on-demand transport Thursday to Saturday, 7am to 6pm, by reservation on +33 3 25 56 17 73.
- Hippodrome car park open during the festival, until noon (times to be confirmed). Free parking is signposted near the main sites, according to the pages we checked.
2. Dates, times and programme 2026
The Montier Photo Festival 2026 is its 29th edition. It runs from Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 November 2026, in Montier-en-Der and across the Lac du Der sites. The AFPAN « L’Or Vert » association organises it. Listings sometimes give its full name, Festival international de la photo animalière et de nature, but on site and on the official website it is called the Montier Photo Festival.
Opening hours on the official page are 9am to 7pm from Thursday to Saturday, and 9am to 6pm on Sunday, « subject to change ». That page is dated 2020. The Festival en France listing gives the same hours for 2026, but the detailed programme had not been published when we checked on 12 October 2026. Check it as soon as it is out, before you plan your day.
What is announced for 2026: about 80 hours of talks, around a hundred forums and round tables, screenings, a 1,000 m² optics village, a youth and schools area, and an environmental protection area for the Grand Est region. The French Biodiversity Office (OFB) runs sessions under the biodiversity marquee: school sessions on Friday 20 November at 2pm and Saturday 21 November at 10am, then two talks on Sunday 22 November at 11am and 1pm.
Three themes come up in the announcements. The desert, with a project in Morocco by photographer Laurent Fiol alongside Moroccan artists, and an exhibition on the fennec fox. Extinct and endangered species, with stuffed animals shown alongside the Pavillon de la biodiversité in Metz, and an exhibition made with the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle. The « underground world », for which no details have been published. The 2026 poster shows a western capercaillie in origami, created by Jonathan Rebouillat (info.fr, 26 June 2026).
The photo competition has 10 categories, including a video category, and a « Young » category for under-16s with parental permission. Entries for 2026 closed on 30 April 2026, and competition photos are on display during the festival. The awards are announced for all four days according to the information available, without confirmation of the programme.
3. Tickets and prices 2026
The table below comes from the official « tickets and prices » page. Festival en France and the Office de tourisme Grands Lacs de Champagne repeat the same prices, but the official page carries an old date: confirm prices at the box office.
| Ticket | Price | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| 1-day pass | €18 | Adult |
| 1-day reduced rate | €15 | Ages 14 to 18, school pupils, students, people with disabilities on presentation of their card, groups of 15 or more |
| Discovery ticket | €10 | Sunday only, from noon |
| 2-day pass | €30 | Two consecutive days |
| 3-day pass | €40 | Three days |
| 4-day pass | €50 | Four days |
| Under 14s | Free | No conditions |
Source: photo-montier.org, tickets and booking, checked 12 October 2026 (page dated 2020, to be confirmed at the box office).
The €40 figure you’ll see in listings is the three-day pass, not a single-day ticket: for one day, budget €18. The €10 discovery ticket is the cheapest at the festival, but it only covers Sunday from noon.
Online ticket sales are open, according to an official update dated 28 September 2026. Tickets can still be collected in Montier-en-Der and Giffaumont-Champaubert, but the collection addresses and times quoted date from 2024, so confirm them. The 2026 ticketing page links to a HelloAsso event run by AFPAN, which we could not open when we searched.
4. Exhibitions, sites and photographers
The festival presents more than 100 exhibitions, according to Festival en France, info.fr and the Office de tourisme Grands Lacs de Champagne. Sources mention about 2,000 photos on display: both figures are consistent, since many exhibitions group several prints. The 1,000 m² optics village completes the route for anyone who wants to see camera bodies and lenses in use.
The exhibitions are spread across sixteen sites. Montier-en-Der has seven, including the COSEC, presented as the main site. Giffaumont-Champaubert has four, around the watersports station. The other five communes have one each. Festival en France, updated for 2026, lists only fifteen, because it leaves out Louze. The total of sixteen comes from the official sites page, dated 2020: the split still needs reconfirming. The festival map is a PDF we could not read: check it before you go.
| Commune | Number of sites | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Montier-en-Der | 7 | Main site cited: COSEC |
| Giffaumont-Champaubert | 4 | Watersports station, lake sites, ticket collection point |
| Ceffonds | 1 | Only site in the commune |
| Droyes | 1 | Only site in the commune |
| Louze | 1 | Missing from the Festival en France listing |
| Saint-Dizier | 1 | Access by Ticéa shuttle (2024 data, to be confirmed) |
| Vitry-le-François | 1 | Access by on-demand shuttle |
| Total | 16 | Official page dated 2020 |

5. Cranes: one season, two events
The festival is not a crane event. No crane-watching outing appears in the announcements published so far, and the organiser does not present the festival as a crane celebration. The detailed programme was not online on 12 October. The actual crane celebration is the Fête de la Grue et de la Migration, held in October by LPO Champagne-Ardenne with the OFB and other partners. It runs from 17 to 25 October 2026 according to the Festival en France listing, confirmed on 20 August 2026. A Haute-Marne events page gives « 17 to 26 October »: the dates conflict, and we have gone with the most recent listing.
Based on the programme of previous editions, to be confirmed for 2026, the Train aux Oiseaux (bird train) leaves the Giffaumont-Champaubert watersports station at 2pm and 3:30pm, for about two hours. Booking went through the tourist office (+33 3 26 72 62 80). The 2026 fare has not been published.
The festival still falls within crane season. Cranes reach the lake around 15 October and stay until March, with weekly dawn counts by the LPO. The autumn peak most often falls between 21 October and 20 November, with no guarantee: over the last nine documented seasons, it has never fallen before 11 October or after 20 November.
Key dates for autumn 2026:
| Event | Dates | Organiser |
|---|---|---|
| Fête de la Grue et de la Migration | 17 to 25 October 2026 | LPO Champagne-Ardenne |
| First LPO count of the season | Sunday 18 October 2026 | LPO Champagne-Ardenne |
| Montier Photo Festival | 19 to 22 November 2026 | AFPAN « L’Or Vert » |
Source: photo-montier.org, 29th edition news; Festival en France, Fête de la Grue listing; LPO Champagne-Ardenne, migration tracker, checked 12 October 2026.
Crane numbers vary a lot from one season to the next. The lake record is 268,120 cranes counted on 3 November 2019, according to the LPO’s 2019 tally as reported in the press. The table below gives a few reference points.
| Date | Count | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 11 November 2014 | 206,582 | LPO, press release of 13 November 2014 |
| 3 November 2019 | 268,120 (lake record) | LPO 2019 tally, reported in the press |
| 19 November 2023 | 93,600 (minimum) | LPO, tracking extract |
| 11 November 2025 | 44,200 | LPO, bulletin no. 191 |
| 7 October 2026 | About a hundred on the lake | LPO, migration tracker (extract dated 8 October 2026) |
Sources: LPO Champagne-Ardenne, checked 12 October 2026. The LPO 2019 tally was not read directly: the record figure should be cited with this caveat.

6. Budget: what the visit really costs
Tickets are not the only cost. A multi-day pass is the clearest saving, as the table below shows.
| Option | Price | Equivalent at single-day rate | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-day pass | €30 | €36 (2 × €18) | €6 |
| 3-day pass | €40 | €54 (3 × €18) | €14 |
| 4-day pass | €50 | €72 (4 × €18) | €22 |
Calculation based on the official price list, photo-montier.org, checked 12 October 2026 (page dated 2020).
- Tickets. The three-day pass at €40 works out to about €13.33 a day. If you are only coming on Sunday, the €10 discovery ticket from noon is the lightest option.
- Transport. Driving is the simplest. Free shuttles cut costs on site, but they must be booked. No 2026 shuttle fare has been published so far.
- Accommodation. No source has confirmed a price for November 2026. A listing for the Maison des Officiers (Montier-en-Der, 8 rooms) advertises a whole holiday cottage from €700 a night, with no date.
- Food. The Vert Casserole restaurant in Montier-en-Der lists dishes at €17 to €21 and an adult menu at €29.90 (Grands Lacs de Champagne listing, date not given).
On top of tickets, add fuel, meals and accommodation: no price is published for those over the period.
7. Outside the festival: a free day in Champagne
A Champagne day trip from Reims
Reims is 1 hour 45 by car according to the festival’s official page. A Champagne excursion from Reims has no link with wildlife photography or the lake: it is an option for the rest of your stay, if you have a free day and don’t mind about 3 hours 30 of driving round trip. That time is our calculation from 1 hour 45, not a published duration.
8. A day at the festival, step by step
The day-by-day programme has not been published, so here is a suggested route based on the sites and opening hours we know. It is an editorial suggestion, not official information.
- Opening, 9am. Start in Montier-en-Der, where seven sites are grouped, including the COSEC, the main site.
- Midday. Take the booked shuttle to Giffaumont-Champaubert, which has four sites including the watersports station and the ticket collection point. In Montier, a free little train runs from 9:30am to 12:30pm and from 1:30pm to 6pm (page dated 2022, to be confirmed).
- Afternoon. Fit in the talks and screenings of your choice, depending on the final programme. The optics village is worth a visit between sessions.
- End of the day. Head out to the lake dykes. Observers watch for cranes coming back at the end of the day: the LPO describes this practice for the Fête, but it is not a guarantee for November.
Sunday changes things: the €10 discovery ticket goes on sale from noon, and the festival closes at 6pm according to the official page, dated 2020.
9. Depending on your profile
Families
Under-14s get in free, and there is a youth and schools area. The exhibitions are varied, with stuffed animals and themes on endangered species. Booked shuttles limit tiring walks, but the distances between sites still need planning.
Tight budget
The €10 discovery ticket, Sunday from noon, is the lowest adult price. The €15 reduced rate applies to students and 14 to 18 year olds with proof of status.
First visit
Come by car and book your shuttles as soon as you know your schedule. Check the final programme before you leave, as it had not been published when we checked.
Amateur photographer
The competition is closed for 2026: entries closed on 30 April. The rules exclude generative AI, and the competition has categories for birds, mammals and other wild animals. Coming to see the prints is the most direct way to prepare for the next edition.
Reduced mobility
The reduced rate applies to people with disabilities on presentation of their card. As far as we know, no information on accessibility at the sites, the COSEC, the car park or the shuttles has been published. Ask the organiser before you come, particularly about paths and toilets at each site.
10. Mistakes to avoid
- Confusing the festival with the Fête de la Grue. These are two separate events, a month apart, with two organisers.
- Buying the three-day pass thinking it is a single-day ticket. The « €40 » in listings is the three-day pass.
- Trusting the 2020 hours and sites without checking. The official pages are dated: reconfirm them at the box office.
- Counting on a shuttle without booking. Shuttles and on-demand transport are booked by phone or email.
- Forgetting avian influenza (bird flu) if the risk rises again. The national level has been « negligible » since 3 June 2026, according to an order of 22 May 2026 reported by the farming press; we have not read the official text. The October 2026 level has not been checked: consult agriculture.gouv.fr before you go.
What other guides don’t tell you
Listings and guides often repeat the same information. Here are three sourced points that most of them leave out or round off.
- A €10 discovery ticket exists, but only on Sundays from noon. It is missing from listings that only quote « €18 »; the « €10 to €50 » range includes it without saying it is Sunday only. photo-montier.org, tickets and booking (checked 12 October 2026, page dated 2020).
- The lake is not a national nature reserve. It is a National Hunting and Wildlife Reserve (réserve nationale de chasse et de faune sauvage), created by ministerial order in 1995 and managed by the OFB. OFB, lac du Der national reserve (checked 12 October 2026).
- The first count of the season is on Sunday 18 October 2026. Counts then take place at dawn every Sunday until mid-March. Guides mention « mid-October » without a precise date. LPO Champagne-Ardenne, migration tracker (checked 12 October 2026).
