The Saint Nicolas parade in Nancy takes place on Saturday 5 December 2026, with free entry, as part of a festival that runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. It ends at place Stanislas. The 2026 start time has not been published yet: the 2025 parade started at 5:30 pm.
Checked on against the official sources cited (saint-nicolas.nancy.fr, destination-nancy.com).
For the Saint Nicolas parade in Nancy in 2026, the date is set: Saturday 5 December. But the festival is not a one-day event. It starts on 20 November, with its markets and villages, and runs until 3 January 2027. The same Saturday evening, the procession of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port takes place at its basilica, in a different town. This article separates what the City of Nancy and the tourist office have confirmed from what is not confirmed yet: the detailed 2026 programme had not been published as of 13 October 2026.
2026 dates: a festival from 20 November to 3 January, and a parade on 5 December

The 2026 Saint Nicolas festival
The City of Nancy runs the festival, which has been on France’s national inventory of intangible cultural heritage since 23 November 2018. Its website announces the 2026 edition from 20 November to 3 January, with a big weekend on 5 and 6 December (saint-nicolas.nancy.fr). So 5 December is the high point of the festival, not its start.
What is dated
- Period: 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, according to the City.
- Parade: Saturday 5 December 2026, according to the City and festivalenfrance.com.
- Markets: open from 20 November to 3 January, closed on 25 December, according to festivalenfrance.com (aggregator).
- Free entry to the public spaces and street shows.
2026 theme: « Légendes et chimères » (“Legends and Chimeras”), announced by the tourist office (destination-nancy.com). The festivalenfrance listing of 8 October 2026 gives it as “to be confirmed”. Past editions had the themes “Verre et lumières” (“Glass and Light”, 2022, cited by guides we read) and “Arts et folie” (“Art and Folly”, 2025, according to ICI Grand Est).
No Viator product we found is about Saint Nicolas 2026. The guided walk below has no link with the festival: it is a tour of the historic centre. It can be booked on 23 of the 45 days of the festival, from 1 December, and is closed on 5 and 6 December, the parade days (dates checked on 13 October 2026).
2026 programme: what is dated, what is still to be confirmed
The detailed programme has not been published. The table keeps only the official dates and the times whose source we could identify. Tour slots with conflicting or unreadable times are not included: check them on the tourist office website before booking.

Two slots still conflict. On 2 December, the tourist office page gives 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm for the French-language tour, while an extract from Nancy Tourisme gives 2:30 pm to 4 pm for the sign-language version (€10 per adult, free under 6). The morning time on 6 December is unreadable on the page. We do not use any of these times.
The parade on Saturday 5 December

Floats, brass bands and companies
The parade, as described in recent editions, includes illuminated floats, brass bands, artistic companies and street shows. It sets off from the historic centre and ends at place Stanislas. In 2025, ICI Grand Est broadcast it live at 6:30 pm. The tourist office puts attendance for the 2025 edition at 130,000 spectators, a figure given without a breakdown or a published counting method.
Key points
- Date: Saturday 5 December 2026, in the big weekend of 5 and 6 December.
- Start time: not published. The 2025 reference is a 5:30 pm start from place Carnot.
- Route: only the finish at place Stanislas is confirmed.
- Length: not published. It depends on this year’s start time.
Live broadcast: we found no announcement of a 2026 broadcast as of 13 October 2026. The only documented broadcast is the 2025 one (ICI Grand Est, 6:30 pm). Check the City’s website or regional media before 5 December.
Markets, villages and big wheel

Markets open for the whole festival
The markets and villages open from 20 November to 3 January and are closed on 25 December, according to the festivalenfrance.com listing updated on 5 June 2026 (Marchés de Noël de Nancy). The number of chalets is not stable: two figures are in circulation, “about sixty” and “more than 65”. We do not use either.
The Marmaille village, for children and fairground rides, and a food village were part of the 2025 edition. Their return in 2026 is not confirmed. The main village was on place Charles-III in 2025; its 2026 location is not confirmed. The big wheel and the ice rink (50 × 10 m, announced for 2026) are on place de la Carrière. The rides are paid, and their 2026 prices are not published.
The local produce cited for 2025 includes gingerbread with the saint’s image, bergamot from Nancy and black pudding (ICI Grand Est). Manalas, small brioches shaped like little men, are mentioned in an extract from the Wikicampers blog. These are local traditions, not a 2026 programme.
Opening times
- Village times for 2026: not published. The City’s page, dated 11 May 2026, shows the 2025 times and says so.
- Big wheel, 2025 times: 11 am to 10 pm, Sunday to Wednesday; 11 am to 11 pm, Thursday to Saturday.
- Video mapping on the front of the town hall: every evening during the festival, about 10 minutes, according to an aggregator. 2025 times: Sunday to Thursday at 6 pm; Friday and Saturday at 6 pm and 7 pm. The 2026 times are not published.
The tourist office’s guided tours
The tourist office runs a tour called “In the footsteps of Saint Nicolas”, about 1 hour 30 minutes, in French and in sign language. It starts at place Vaudémont, near the Porte de la Craffe. Booking is required, and tickets are sold directly by the tourist office: this is not a Pixidia partner offer.
The 2026 dates for the French-language version are 21 and 28 November, and 2, 5 and 6 December (destination-nancy.com). The price shown is €10 per adult, free under 6. This price appears only in search extracts, as we could not read the booking page: confirm it when you book.
The sign-language version is offered separately. An extract from Nancy Tourisme gives 2:30 pm to 4 pm on 2 December, and 10:30 am to 12 pm on 5 December. The official English page returns a payment error when we read it, so these times could not be cross-checked.
The procession of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, on the evening of 5 December

A religious tradition, separate from the parade
The procession takes place in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, a separate town from Nancy, on the Saturday closest to 6 December, so on 5 December 2026 (festivalenfrance.com). Many guides give 6 December, and many confuse this procession with the Nancy parade: they are two separate events.
The typical schedule
The 2026 listing gives a typical schedule, which is not confirmed for this year: vespers at 4 pm, doors closing at 5 pm, opening at 7:30 pm, torchlit procession at 8:30 pm. The venue is the basilica of Saint-Nicolas, rue Anatole-France, in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port (54210).
- Free entry.
- Getting there: one extract describes a short drive from Nancy, with no distance given.
- 2026 shuttle bus: none announced. A shuttle ran in 2024.
Where the festival comes from: historical landmarks, without a verdict
The festival is held under the patronage of Saint Nicolas, recognised as the patron saint of Lorraine. Several search extracts link this recognition to the Battle of Nancy on 5 January 1477 and to Duke René II. We could not read a primary historical source on this point: the link is presented as reported, not established.
The dates of the basilica of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port differ between extracts. Some date it to the early 1480s, while others trace the relic and the procession back to the 11th century. We do not choose between these versions.
Père Fouettard, who accompanies the saint in the tradition, is described by guides as a criminal butcher, and the stories link him to the patronage of butchers. His precise origin is disputed between sources.
In 2020, public events were cancelled. France 3 Grand Est then broadcast the 2019 parade instead, as stated in its press release of 27 November 2020, quoted in an extract.
Getting to Nancy and parking
For a stay during the festival, the train is still the simplest choice. From London, the usual route is Eurostar to Paris Nord, then a TGV from Paris Est to Nancy. You change stations in Paris, so allow time for the transfer. The route comes from the aggregator Rome2Rio: check timetables and fares on the operators’ sites. The figures below come from aggregators and guides, not an official plan: the City has not yet published traffic arrangements for 2026.
| Journey or service | Duration or price | Status of the information | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nancy-Ville station to place Stanislas (on foot) | About 10 minutes | Aggregators, no official source | ouigo.com, La Souris Globe-trotteuse |
| Paris to Nancy by TGV | About 1 h 31 to 1 h 38 | Extracts, summer timetables | Search extracts |
| Nearby car park (Yespark) | About €2.50 per evening | Extract, undated | Search extract |
| Park and ride by tram on parade day | Recommended | Advice from regional media | info-lux.com, 14 September 2026 |
| 2026 shuttle to Saint-Nicolas-de-Port | No announcement found | Search with no results | Procession listing |
Source: ouigo.com, info-lux.com and La Souris Globe-trotteuse, checked on 13 October 2026.
We found no 2026 shuttle to Nancy or to Saint-Nicolas-de-Port. The only shuttle on record dates from 2024, with a €10 single ticket and conflicting pick-up points depending on the source: do not use it as a reference. For parade day, info-lux.com recommends park and ride by tram (article of 14 September 2026).
Budget: what is free and what costs money
Most of the festival can be enjoyed for free. The festival itself, street shows, markets, the parade and the procession of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port are all free entry. Paid items are few, and not all of them have a 2026 price.
- Tourist office tour: €10 per adult, free under 6, by booking (price to be confirmed).
- Rides and big wheel: paid, 2026 prices not published.
- Parking: a nearby car park is listed at around €2.50 per evening, undated (search extract).
- Accommodation: no 2026 figure (see the note below).
- Train: search extracts give 1 h 31 to 1 h 38 for the TGV from Paris, on summer timetables. December fares were not checked.
A weekend can therefore be done without spending anything beyond the train, meals and parking: the parade and the markets are free. We found no reliable 2026 accommodation price; the prices shown on booking platforms date from December 2025 or January 2026 and should not be reused.
A day on Saturday 5 December, with no invented timings
As no time has been published for the parade, the order below does not set any slots. It relies on official or aggregator dates and flags what still needs confirming.
- Arrive at Nancy-Ville station.
- Walk through the markets and villages of the historic centre, which are open that day.
- Book the tourist office tour if you want the story of Saint Nicolas. On 5 December, a French-language version is listed for the morning, to be confirmed.
- Follow the parade to its finish at place Stanislas.
- Decide early whether you are aiming for the procession. Its typical schedule starts at 8:30 pm in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, and the 2026 parade time is not known. If the parade follows the 2025 slot, the gap is tight.
This is not an official programme and sets no slots. Aggregator sites put Nancy-Ville station about ten minutes on foot from place Stanislas.
Depending on your travel style
- With family: the 2025 children’s programme (Marmaille village) and the tourist office tour, which has a sign-language version, are the two anchors. The 2026 times still need confirming.
- As a couple: the parade ends at place Stanislas, the only confirmed stop on its route. The markets and villages are open from 20 November to 3 January, for a stroll at the end of the day.
- On a budget: the festival, markets, parade and procession are all free. The remaining costs are the train, meals and parking.
- First time in Nancy: place Stanislas and the historic centre hold most of the festival. A morning visit before the parade gives you your bearings.
- Going further in the region: Metz also opens its Christmas market from 20 November to 30 December 2026, according to an extract from a Metz city tender notice found on marchesonline.com.
Mistakes to avoid
- Confusing the Nancy parade with the procession of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port: they take place on the same evening, but in two different towns.
- Trusting the 2025 times shown on pages that do not say which year they refer to.
- Counting on a shuttle or extra TER trains: no 2026 announcement has been found.
- Booking the tourist office tour without checking the day: the 2026 dates do not cover every day of the festival.
What other guides don’t tell you
The points below rest on the official websites of the City and the tourist office, supplemented by festivalenfrance.com, an aggregator, for the procession and the markets. They are missing from the guides we read, or are dated wrongly.
- The festival runs until 3 January 2027. Many guides repeat a “six weeks” format or the dates of earlier editions. The City announces the period from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 (saint-nicolas.nancy.fr, consulted on 13 October 2026).
- The Saint-Nicolas-de-Port procession falls on 5 December 2026. Most guides give 6 December. The 2026 listing names the Saturday closest to that date (festivalenfrance.com, aggregator, consulted on 13 October 2026).
- The festival has been on the national intangible heritage inventory since 23 November 2018. This is France’s national inventory, not UNESCO’s list (saint-nicolas.nancy.fr, consulted on 13 October 2026).
- The tourist office tours are dated for 2026. The dates of 21 and 28 November, and of 2, 5 and 6 December, appear on the tourist office page, which the guides we read do not cite (destination-nancy.com, consulted on 13 October 2026).
- The 2026 village times are not published. The village page on the City’s site, dated 11 May 2026, shows the 2025 times and says they are not confirmed for 2026 (saint-nicolas.nancy.fr, consulted on 13 October 2026).
