Palermo Soho is the neighborhood of designers, mural-covered passages and the good tables of Buenos Aires. It is explored on foot around Plaza Serrano, with no official boundary. Allow half a day for the street art, a full day if you add a guided meal or a cooking class. The mural tour starts at just €11.81 per adult, while food tours and cooking classes run between €45 and €85. Start with the street art tour, then book a guided meal.

When I plan a stay in Buenos Aires, I always start with the same question: do I want the postcard Buenos Aires, or the one where locals live, eat and paint their walls? For the first, there is La Boca and Caminito. For the second, head to Palermo Soho, a neighborhood of cobbled streets, specialty cafés, concept stores and murals hidden in passages that nobody points out.

In this guide, I have gathered ten experiences you can book to discover it with a local guide. The catalog leans toward food: two street art tours, two food tours, three cooking classes, one asado and two bike rides. I start with the street art tour from Plaza Serrano, the most accessible and the best fit for the theme.

One point of transparency: I did not find any guided tour of designer boutiques or galleries among the top-rated products. The design side is therefore covered here as editorial tips, without a booking card, further down in the article. And if you want to end the evening with music, my guide to tango classes in Buenos Aires rounds out this day nicely.

Why Palermo Soho: the Pixidia angle

Palermo Soho in five minutes

Palermo is the largest barrio in Buenos Aires: about 15.9 km² and some 249,000 residents, according to Wikipedia. It is divided into sub-neighborhoods, including Palermo Viejo, the old part, which encompasses Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood. The name “Soho” is unofficial: it echoes New York’s SoHo, because independent designers settled there. Palermo Hollywood owes its name to the TV channels and production companies that arrived in the late 1990s, according to Gringo in Buenos Aires.

Boundaries vary from one guide to another. Keep a simple landmark in mind: around Plaza Serrano, between Santa Fe, Córdoba, Scalabrini Ortiz and Juan B. Justo avenues. The square is officially named Plazoleta Julio Cortázar, but everyone says Plaza Serrano.

Street art: commissioned, authorized, constantly changing

Unlike La Boca, where the colors are painted on sheet metal along a signposted circuit, the murals of Palermo Soho are found on private walls, in passages and on shopping streets. According to Hyperallergic, painting without the owner’s consent is illegal, whereas with their consent it is legal: many muralists go door to door and paint in broad daylight. The current movement consolidated in 2001, during the economic crisis, after the hip-hop tags of the 1990s.

The passages to walk first, according to Sol Salute: Pasaje Russel, Pasaje Soria, Pasaje Santa Rosa and Pasaje Coronel Cabrer. The walls change fast. A mural by Ulises Baine, “Mural de la vida”, was for example painted in July 2026 on Pasaje Santa Rosa, near Plaza Serrano, according to Buenos Aires Street Art. A photo from 2023 therefore does not tell you what you will see. Wandering on your own is free, but a guide gives you the artist’s name and the context.

Design and boutiques: the official label and the reality on the ground

Buenos Aires is a UNESCO City of Design, as the official Turismo Buenos Aires page reminds us, which puts Palermo Soho first for independent fashion and design. On the ground, the streets to explore are Jorge Luis Borges, Gurruchaga, Thames, Malabia and Honduras. A few addresses cited by local guides: Felix (Honduras 4916, local brands), Pehache (Gurruchaga 1418, home decor) and Monoblock (El Salvador 4833, stationery), plus the bookshop-café Libros del Pasaje. Shops open and close quickly, so check their opening hours before you go.

For markets, the weekend is the best time: Plaza Serrano hosts independent designers (T-shirts, dresses, accessories, crafts) and Plaza Armenia has a more handicraft-oriented market. If you are looking for bargains, the outlets on Avenida Córdoba and in Villa Crespo, a direct neighbor, are worth the detour.

A way to see the neighborhood without wearing out your legs on pavement: four hours by bike between Palermo, the rose garden, the Evita monument and Recoleta. The start is at Plaza San Martín, in Retiro, so not in Palermo Soho. My tip: pick a dry day, as showers are frequent in spring.

Practical tips on the ground

Getting there. Take Subte line D to Scalabrini Ortiz or Plaza Italia. Buses 34, 39 and 152 also serve the neighborhood, and a taxi or Cabify remains simple. Downtown is about 20 minutes away by car.

When to go. The afternoon suits boutiques, cafés and mural photos, the evening suits bars and restaurants. Weekdays are quieter, but the markets are held on weekends. October and November are austral spring: mild weather with showers, and the jacarandas bloom in November according to Partir.com.

A one-day itinerary. Here is what I would do: murals in the morning with the tour from Plaza Serrano, boutiques and a coffee in the early afternoon, then a food tour or an asado in the evening. The prices shown above were collected for departures between 15 October and 14 November 2026, per adult and based on two adults. They vary with the date and the number of participants.

Booking a table. A place like Don Julio (Guatemala 4691), which received a Michelin star in 2024, needs to be booked well in advance, sometimes several months. It is not linked to any of the experiences in this article.

Safety. This is a busy tourist area with well-lit main streets in the evening. Apply the usual vigilance of a big city.
