Go private if you want a French-speaking guide, a pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum day, or you are travelling as a family; go with a group if budget comes first. The only true head-to-head on Viator: Giza, Saqqara and Memphis at €163.50 shared versus €307.46 private, tickets included, for 2 adults on October 20, 2026. Almost the whole catalogue is private, so compare like for like (tickets, lunch, guide language), never on the headline price.

You want to see the Giza pyramids and you are torn between a private guide and a group tour. I went through the Viator catalogue to answer honestly, and I found a gap: of 277 tours that mention the pyramids, the Sphinx or Giza in their title, 262 are private. The « group » offer barely exists. Only one product puts both modes side by side, with the same 8 a.m. departure and the same date: the Giza, Saqqara and Memphis day, which saves two people €144 in the shared version.

The trap is the headline price. A private tour advertised at €14 per adult includes neither tickets, nor lunch, and sometimes not even the guide. Conversely, a shared tour at €82 per adult includes the entrance fees. To help you decide, I kept 11 offers, all rated 4.85 or higher, all open for booking every day from October 12 to November 11, 2026. For each one I give the duration, the format, the guide language and a total price for 2 adults, spelling out what it covers. One language point before you read on: only 5 offers out of 11 declare a French-speaking guide. The rest are in English, Spanish or other languages, so check this before you pay.

Why the private or group question comes up at Giza

The Giza plateau brings together three pyramids: Khufu’s (146.58 m, built around 2580 to 2560 BC), Khafre’s (143.5 m) and Menkaure’s (65.5 m), plus the Great Sphinx, 73.5 m long. The whole site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 as « Memphis and its Necropolis » (Wikipedia). On site, no sign tells the story for you: without a guide, you look at huge monuments without knowing who built them or why.

Since 2025, the plateau has been reorganised. Practical guides describe a new main entrance on the Cairo-Fayoum road side, electric shuttles between viewpoints and vendors grouped in an area near the Sphinx (Catching Auroras). Other accounts still report touts. Both versions coexist, so the argument « going private protects you from harassment » carries less weight than before. Three solid benefits remain: an Egyptologist’s explanations, the logistics of a day that links the plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum (about 18 km apart, according to a local operator), and the choice of your arrival time.

Read this table with one caveat: the shared price and the private price come from the same listing, checked on October 20, 2026 for 2 adults. On the other offers, the gaps come mostly from what is included, not from the private or group mode.

The 11 Giza pyramids tours compared

1. Giza, Saqqara and Memphis: shared or private, the real head-to-head

Rating 4.9 (441 reviews) 8 hours Total for 2 adults on Oct 20, 2026: €163.50 shared, €307.46 private, tickets included French-speaking guide declared Instant confirmation Available 31 days out of 31, from October 12 to November 11

This is the only listing that lets you choose the mode without changing the programme, so it is the most useful one for deciding. With tickets, the shared tour comes to €81.75 per adult and the private one to €153.73, a €72 gap per person. Without tickets, the shared tour drops to €47 to €59 per adult depending on the date. I would go shared if budget matters, private if I want to shift the 8 a.m. departure.

  • Giza plateau, Sphinx, Saqqara and Memphis in one day
  • Hotel pick-up, air-conditioned vehicle, Egyptologist
  • Entrance tickets if you tick the option

2. Giza, Saqqara and Memphis, private with an Egyptologist

Rating 5.0 (154 reviews) 8 hours €81.38 in total for 2 adults, private basic option without tickets; €226.06 all inclusive English-speaking guide, no French declared Instant confirmation

Same programme as the previous listing, but private only and with a departure between 8 and 10 a.m. The base price is tempting, as long as you remember it excludes tickets: with four people, the basic option falls to €27.12 per adult. I would book it for an English-speaking group that wants flexibility on the schedule.

  • Transfers in an air-conditioned private vehicle
  • Bottled water during the day
  • All-inclusive option available at €226.06 for 2

3. Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum, private, all inclusive

Rating 4.89 (6169 reviews) 8 hours €334.58 in total for 2 adults, entrance fees and lunch included (€143.78 per adult at 4) French-speaking guide declared Instant confirmation

This is the most popular offer in the selection, and the easiest to compare: one single option, everything included. The price looks high next to the basic options, but it covers entrance fees and lunch, and it drops with four people. I pick it when I want to skip all the arithmetic, and above all a French-speaking guide.

Rating 4.88 (3236 reviews) 8 to 10 hours €63.30 in total for 2 adults (car, guide, lunch, no tickets); €106.70 with camel ride French-speaking guide declared Instant confirmation

A long day, with pick-up at 8 a.m., that links the plateau, lunch and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The base price leaves tickets to you: add the plateau and museum entrance fees on top. The 30-minute camel ride option adds the picture everyone wants to bring home, without disrupting the programme.

  • Lunch in a good-quality restaurant
  • Optional 30-minute camel ride

5. Pyramids, Sphinx and Grand Museum, private and made to measure

Rating 4.98 (322 reviews) 8 hours €36.16 in total for 2 adults, car and guide only, no tickets Guide in English or Spanish, no French declared Instant confirmation

Three options on the same day, from the cheapest to the one that includes entrance fees. The lowest is only transport with a guide, and it is worth it only if you buy the tickets online yourself. I recommend this listing to English or Spanish-speaking travellers who want a 4.98 rating and a full day.

  • Entrance fees if you choose the option that includes them

6. Pyramids, Grand Museum and felucca or bazaar, private

Rating 4.94 (843 reviews) 9 hours €27.12 in total for 2 adults for transport only; €217.02 all inclusive with felucca French-speaking guide declared Instant confirmation

The most complete day on the list: the pyramids in the morning, the Grand Egyptian Museum afterwards, then a felucca ride on the Nile or a stop at the bazaar. The €27.12 price is a simple pick-up and drop-off, with no guide and no tickets: do not mistake it for the price of the day. The real option sits around €217 for two, felucca included.

  • Pyramids, Sphinx, Grand Egyptian Museum, then felucca or bazaar
  • Pick-up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza

7. Guided Grand Egyptian Museum, with a pyramids option

Rating 4.85 (326 reviews) 3 hours for the museum €262.24 in total for 2 adults (museum and lunch); €271.28 with the pyramids French-speaking guide declared Instant confirmation

This listing starts from the Grand Egyptian Museum, with access before it opens to the public, then pairs the visit with the pyramids as an option. The listing does not say whether the outing is private or shared: check this directly on the page before you book. I include it for the museum, which is the second reason to come to Giza after the pyramids.

8. Private half day on the plateau, in 7 options

Rating 4.92 (2584 reviews) 5 hours €46.12 in total for 2 adults, car and guide only; €222.90 all inclusive with Grand Museum Guide in English or Spanish, no French declared Instant confirmation

Seven options, from transport with a guide to all inclusive with the Grand Egyptian Museum. Departures run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the price per adult stays the same at two or at four. It strikes me as the best base for a half day: you set the level of comfort and inclusions yourself, without paying for a full day.

  • Giza plateau and Great Sphinx with a private guide
  • Free pick-up anywhere in Cairo or Giza
  • Lunch and camel ride depending on the option

9. Private VIP visit with optional pyramid interior

Eleven options, and this is the listing to keep if you want to go inside the Great Pyramid or the third one: the interior is offered only in the all-inclusive options. The Grand Egyptian Museum and Saqqara can be added as options. Compare options like for like, because the gap between the lowest and the highest exceeds €260 for two.

  • Optional interior of the Great Pyramid and of another pyramid
  • Skip-the-line and private visit with a guide
  • Camel ride and lunch in the all-inclusive options

10. Private 3-hour walking tour of the plateau with an Egyptologist

Rating 4.98 (172 reviews) 3 hours €72.34 in total for 2 adults, single option English-speaking guide, no French declared Instant confirmation

Here there is no car and no hotel pick-up: the meeting point is in front of the plateau ticket office, with an Egyptologist who also gives you photo tips. The rate does not change at two or at four (€36.17 per adult). It is the format I prefer for travellers already staying in Giza, who want a guide without paying for the trip from Cairo.

  • Qualified Egyptologist and photographer’s tips
  • Meeting at the ticket office, no transfer

11. Budget option: plateau, camel and lunch

Rating 4.94 (1599 reviews) 5 hours €21.70 in total for 2 adults, guide and car only; €227.88 all inclusive with Grand Museum No French-speaking guide declared Instant confirmation

This is the lowest headline price in the selection, and the one to read with the most suspicion: €21.70 for two buys a guide and a car, nothing else. The all-inclusive option with the Grand Egyptian Museum rises to €227.88. The declared languages are Arabic, Portuguese, English, Italian and Spanish, but not French. I keep it for travellers who already know exactly what they want to add.

  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off in an air-conditioned private vehicle
  • Bottle of water during the visit
  • Camel ride, lunch and pyramid interior in the all-inclusive options

Choosing for your situation, and tips on site

My decision grid. You are alone or two, on a tight budget, and Saqqara interests you: take the shared Giza, Saqqara and Memphis day. You want a French-speaking guide and a day with the museum: the all-inclusive option or the private 8-hour day. You are travelling as a family or as four: look at the listings whose price falls with the number of travellers, like this one. You want to go inside the Great Pyramid: the VIP visit with interior. A half day is enough for you: the private 5-hour tour.

Compare like for like. The headline price of most private listings excludes tickets. Budget on top, as orders of magnitude taken from practical guides (not from an official site, so check them): about 700 EGP, or 14 USD, for the plateau, and about 1,500 EGP (30 USD) to enter the Great Pyramid, with a limited number of places each day. According to those same sources, the plateau ticket offices accept only bank cards.

Grand Egyptian Museum: a moving price. Guides quote between 1,450 and 1,700 EGP for a foreign adult, depending on the source, and the Egyptian press announces a rise from 30 to 35 USD on November 1, 2026. If you book in October for a date after that deadline, check on the listing whether the displayed price takes it into account. The ticket is time-stamped, so book your slot early.

Opening hours and crowds. Opening hours of the plateau vary from one source to another: I prefer not to give you a wrong one, so check them before you go. Guides advise arriving early in the morning for the light and to get ahead of organised groups. On Friday and Saturday, the weekend days in Egypt, crowds are heavier. Allow up to 3 hours for the plateau alone, and 3 to 5 hours for the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Cancellation. The listings show a full refund up to 24 hours before departure, to be reconfirmed on the page when you book.

Safety. The French Diplomatie website, updated on September 10, 2026, names specific areas to avoid (the border with Israel, North Sinai, poorly marked desert areas) and does not list Cairo and Giza among them. Read the details before you leave: the 2026 safety update on Egypt.

Going further. Want to know why the Grand Egyptian Museum changes the game? Read my article on the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum. Unsure about the season? Have a look at when to visit Egypt in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Private or group tour of the Giza pyramids: which should you choose?

Choose private if you want a French-speaking guide, a day that combines the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, or a flexible schedule. Choose a group if budget comes first: on the only listing that offers both modes, the shared tour costs €163.50 for 2 adults tickets included, versus €307.46 private (October 20, 2026). See this day.

Do you need a guide to visit the Giza pyramids?

It is not compulsory: some guides describe a self-guided visit without difficulty since the plateau was reorganised, while others still report touts. A guide above all brings explanation, since the site offers no commentary on the spot. For a light format, look at the 3-hour walking tour.

Can you go inside the Great Pyramid?

Yes, with a separate ticket, about 1,500 EGP (30 USD) according to practical guides, and a limited number of places each day. Some all-inclusive options include it: the VIP visit does. Check the price before you go, as these figures do not come from an official site.

How much time should you allow for the pyramids?

Count up to 3 hours for the plateau alone, 4 to 5 hours for a half day with transfers, and 8 to 10 hours if you add the Grand Egyptian Museum or Saqqara and Memphis. The museum alone takes 3 to 5 hours on a guided visit.

How much does a private tour of the pyramids cost?

Headline prices start at €21.70 in total for 2 adults, but they include only the guide and the car, without tickets. An all-inclusive option with the Grand Egyptian Museum sits around €217 to €335 for two depending on the listing. See the all-inclusive option.

Which tours offer a French-speaking guide?

Five offers in my selection declare a French-speaking guide: the Giza, Saqqara and Memphis day, the all-inclusive option with the museum, the private 8-hour day, the day with felucca or bazaar and the Grand Egyptian Museum visit. The others are in English, Spanish or other languages: always check before you pay.
