In San Pedro de Atacama, 9 Viator tours are rated at least 4.78 out of 5. They start at €43.10 per person (based on 2 adults), and the full-day Piedras Rojas and Chaxa tour starts at €94.82. For geysers, book El Tatio at dawn; for stargazing, the 2.5-hour private tour.
Checked on against the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).
Nine Viator tours are worth booking in San Pedro de Atacama for departures from 4 November 2026 to 2 January 2027: ratings from 4.78 to 4.99 out of 5, starting prices from €43.10 per person. I always start with two questions: how many days you have on site, and how high you are ready to go. This guide answers them for the nine tours selected, one by one.
The village sits at about 2,450 metres above sea level, and almost all the tours leave from there, by bike or by vehicle. What changes from one tour to the next is not the name of the site but the departure time, the duration, and whether you get back early or late. That is why the list below does not read like a popularity ranking: it reads like a set of constraints.
The nine entries fall into three families. There are the day trips to landscapes, lagoons, salt flat, valleys and geysers, which need an early start or a full day. There are the night-sky observations, which take place in the evening, with or without a group. And there is cycling, the only bike outing in the set. If you have only one free day, choose a full day with no extra travel. If you want an early night, choose an evening. If you want to be active, start with the bike tour to the Devil’s Throat, the best-rated tour on the list with 4.99 out of 5.
Why San Pedro de Atacama splits into three families of experiences

San Pedro de Atacama is a gateway to the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The town sits at about 2,450 metres above sea level, according to the Awasi lodge. Piedras Rojas and the Chaxa lagoon, on the Salar de Atacama, lie within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, managed by CONAF. The Valley of the Moon, the Baltinache lagoons and the El Tatio geyser field, which rises above 4,000 metres, are not placed inside this reserve by the sources we checked.
This geography explains how the selection is structured. Tours to the landscapes require an early start, sometimes before dawn, or a full day. Sky observations take place at night, in an atmosphere known for its clarity, and cycling is a slow way into the valley. For El Tatio, published itineraries leave between 4:30 and 5:00 am to arrive at sunrise; confirm this time when you book.
The season matters as much as the choice. Civitatis says that September to November and March to May are the best periods, while January and February correspond to the « altiplanic winter », with possible rain and cloud. The window of this article, 4 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, therefore covers the end of the austral spring and the start of summer. The products remain open over this period, but the operator may cancel a departure because of bad weather.
Altitude is the second factor to take seriously. According to Civitatis, you should spend four to five days on site before tackling the highest tours, and keep El Tatio for the end of your stay. For altitude sickness, ask your doctor for advice before you travel.
This selection covers only nature and sky tours: no cultural or food experience appears, because the listings we checked do not include any. For Andean villages or local cuisine, you would need a source other than Viator.

The 9 tours in San Pedro de Atacama, one by one

1. Bike tour to the Devil’s Throat
This is the tour I recommend first, and not only because it is the best rated on the list. The ride lasts about four hours, in private, with a guide, and goes by bike to the Devil’s Throat. The meeting point is the Cruz Verde pharmacy in the town centre, then the bikes are collected from Rent Bike, as the listing says. What sets it apart from the other tours: you pedal instead of sitting in a vehicle, and the private format keeps the group to your size. The pitfall is setting off on an empty stomach: breakfast is not included, nor is the entrance ticket to the Catarpe valley. The listing gives no departure time: ask the operator before you block your morning. It does not state the required fitness level either. If you have not cycled for a long time, book it anyway, but do not treat it as a stroll. It is closed from 4 to 12 November, on 15 November, from 19 to 22 November, from 24 to 26 November, on 2, 8 and 13 December, from 25 to 28 December and on 2 January: count 35 open days out of 60.
- Private tour with guide, bikes and safety equipment provided
- Breakfast and the Catarpe valley entrance ticket not included
- Meeting point: Cruz Verde pharmacy, town centre

2. Red stones and altiplanic lagoons
A 4.98 out of 5 rating puts this excursion second on the list. With 202 reviews, it ranks only seventh by volume: the rating rests on a smaller sample. It leads to the same red stones as the Piedras Rojas and Chaxa lagoon day, card 5, but at a lower price: €67.97 per person against €94.82. The day lasts ten hours, with breakfast and lunch included, which keeps logistics simple in the field. The point to understand is the confirmation: it is manual, so the booking is not immediate. Do not leave it to the last minute if your dates are fixed. The listing does not give the meeting point, and I am not going to guess it: ask when you book. Park entrance fees are not included, and the amount should be checked on site or on the official website. This product suits anyone who wants a full day with meals provided, without organising the route between the sites themselves.
- Breakfast and lunch included
- Manual confirmation: the booking is not instant
- Park entrance fees not included

3. Stargazing with two 16-inch telescopes
This stargazing session ranks fourth by number of reviews (579), and it answers a simple question: can you see the sky without being an astronomer? Yes, the session is designed for that: two 16-inch telescopes, and a group that stays small. The evening lasts two to three hours depending on the programme, and you leave with a professional photograph taken during the session, one per person. Transport is included, there and back: the listing names around forty hotels served, including Don Raúl, Takha Takha, La Cochera or Pascual Andino. The price starts at €58.91 per person, but the listing shows a range rising to €226.57 per person, with no explanation in the data we checked: use the starting price, and check what the option you are interested in includes. This is not an outing for anyone who feels the cold easily: the listing warns of low temperatures and of health restrictions, including cardiovascular problems. It is closed on 8 and 9 November, from 16 to 26 November, from 18 to 27 December and from 30 December to 1 January: count 34 open days out of 60.
- Two 16-inch telescopes, small-group observation
- One professional photograph per person
- Snack platter with wine, hot chocolate or tea

4. The private night-sky tour of Atacama
If you want the stars without sharing the sky with a group, this is the tour to take. It is private: only the people in your booking are in the vehicle. It lasts two and a half hours, with an air-conditioned vehicle that collects you from your hotel. Hot drinks are served, hot chocolate, coffee, tea and herbal infusions, along with reserve red wines and sweet and savoury snacks. Smartphone tripods are provided, so you do not have to fumble with your phone in the dark to photograph the sky. Compared with the group observation in card 3, this one suits couples and small groups who want an evening at their own pace. The pitfall: it is not open on 7 and 9 November, from 19 to 26 November, on 1 December, from 19 to 26 December, nor on 31 December and 1 January. It has only 39 open days out of 60: check your date before you build the rest of your programme around it, and book without delay if you have a specific slot in mind.
- Private tour, only the people in your booking
- Air-conditioned vehicle, smartphone tripods provided
- Hot drinks, reserve red wines, snacks

5. Piedras Rojas and Chaxa lagoon in a full day
This is the most complete day in the selection: breakfast and lunch included, entrance tickets to both sites included in the price, and hotel pick-up. It lasts ten hours, so it starts early and ends late. Plan nothing for the evening. The tickets for Piedras Rojas and the Chaxa lagoon are included with no date condition, which sets it apart from the Valley of the Moon, where tickets are included only for bookings made from 1 October 2026. The landscape is that of the Salar de Atacama, and both sites lie within the Los Flamencos National Reserve, managed by CONAF. It has collected 618 reviews, placing it among the three most reviewed listings in the selection, and it combines Piedras Rojas and the Chaxa lagoon in a single day. The pitfall: if you take this ten-hour day and card 7 the next day, you chain two demanding outings. Space them out, especially if you are coming off a day at altitude. I did not find an official 2026 fee for the reserve: the listing mentions no exclusions, but check the entry conditions on the official site before you go.
- Breakfast and lunch included
- Piedras Rojas and Chaxa tickets included in the price
- Hotel pick-up in San Pedro de Atacama

6. Vallecito and the Magic Bus, the valley in four hours
This four-hour excursion is one of the two least expensive in the selection, at the same price as El Tatio: €43.10 per person based on 2 adults. It focuses on Vallecito and the Magic Bus, the abandoned bus in the valley. The Magic Bus serves as a photo stop, and the excursion is built around it. The snack is included: biscuits, juice, pisco sour, wine, appetisers, potatoes and sauces. Its 140 reviews are among the fewest in the selection, but the 4.88 out of 5 rating holds. It is the right choice for a tight budget, or for a half-day that leaves the rest of the day free. The meeting point is the hotel. Outside the pick-up zone, the listing refers you to the operator’s office in San Pedro, with no precise address: ask for it before you leave, so you do not wait in the wrong place.
- Photo stop at the Magic Bus, an abandoned bus in the valley
- Snack included: biscuits, juice, pisco sour, wine, appetisers
- Hotel pick-up; meeting at the office outside the zone

7. The hidden lagoons of Baltinache
The Baltinache lagoons have collected 789 reviews, the largest number in the selection. The guided hike lasts about four and a half hours, one hour from San Pedro, to a set of seven lagoons that you visit on foot from the start of the trail. You choose the morning option, with breakfast, or the afternoon option, with a snack. Entrance tickets are not included: the listing gives USD 12 per person. Swimming is the point to handle with care. The operator’s listing says that from 29 September 2026, swimming and floating are no longer allowed in the lagoons. An older mention, on the other hand, speaks of swimming being restored, and other sources contradict each other. So I am not promising you a swim. Ask the operator before you leave whether swimming is allowed that day, and do not build your programme around it. Fitness matters too: the hike requires good physical condition.
- Seven lagoons visited on foot from the start of the trail
- Morning option with breakfast, afternoon option with a snack
- Entrance tickets not included; swimming to confirm before departure

8. The El Tatio geyser field at dawn
The El Tatio geyser field is the most unusual excursion on the list, and the most demanding on timing. The departure takes place before sunrise: published itineraries leave between 4:30 and 5:00 am, to reach the geysers at sunrise. Breakfast is included on site. Bring layers, gloves and a warm hat for the early morning. The field lies above 4,000 metres, between 4,200 and 4,300 metres depending on the sources. If you have any doubt about your health, ask your doctor before you set off. The entrance ticket is not included: it costs USD 19 per person and is paid in advance. On the way back, the listing mentions a stop at a lagoon to see flamingos, with no guarantee. The second-highest review count in the selection (619) goes to El Tatio, behind the Baltinache lagoons, with a rating of 4.85 out of 5. The meeting point is the hotel: if your hotel is outside the pick-up zone, ask the operator for the meeting point before you book.
- Departure between 4:30 and 5:00 am (published itineraries), breakfast included
- Entrance ticket not included: USD 19 per person, paid in advance
- Possible stop at a lagoon on the way back (per the listing)

9. The Valley of the Moon at sunset
This excursion comes last on the list by rating, at 4.78 out of 5 for 415 reviews, and yet it is the one I would choose for the light. It runs for sunset, over rock formations sculpted by erosion, and a snack with drinks is served on site. Entrance tickets are included for bookings made from 1 October 2026: for a booking made on the date of our check (21 October 2026), this point is therefore covered. Before that date, the ticket had to be bought online, at USD 13.50. The park entrance fee is not confirmed in the data we checked: check the amount before you leave. For pick-up, it is the hotel. Outside the zone, the meeting point is at the operator’s office, whose listing gives no address. It lasts 4 hours 30 minutes, and the sunset is its highlight.
- Sunset over the rock formations
- Snack and drinks included
- Entrance tickets included for bookings made from 1 October 2026

Get coveredPractical advice on the spot
The first tip concerns duration. A tour listed at four hours does not last four hours door to door: add the hotel pick-up and the return. For El Tatio, the listed duration is 6 to 7 hours, with a departure before sunrise; for the Piedras Rojas and Chaxa day, it is 10 hours. Plan the day before without any strenuous activity, and keep the following day to recover.
The second tip concerns the order of outings: book El Tatio at the end of your stay, after a few days of acclimatisation, as Civitatis advises.
On altitude, our research found no medical source. For stargazing, the listing flags health restrictions, including cardiovascular problems: if you have doubts, ask your doctor before you book, and do not rely on any dosage you find online.
Cold is the third point. Departures for El Tatio take place in the early morning, and the stargazing listing flags low temperatures. Bring layers, gloves and a warm hat.
The fourth point concerns transport. Check the real transfer time from Calama airport. The excursions include transport: take them rather than hire a car, unless you know how to drive on this kind of high-altitude road.
Confirmations and cancellations also need attention. Eight of the nine tours are confirmed instantly; the visit to the red stones and altiplanic lagoons is on manual confirmation, so the booking is not immediate. All the listings checked offer free cancellation. For a full refund, cancellation must happen at least 24 hours before departure, according to the policy shown. The operator may also cancel a departure because of bad weather.
Finally, the budget. Entrance tickets are sometimes included and sometimes extra. They are included for the Piedras Rojas and Chaxa day, and for the Valley of the Moon if the booking is made from 1 October 2026. They are not included for the Baltinache lagoons (USD 12 per person), for El Tatio (USD 19 per person, paid in advance), or for the bike tour. For parks whose entry fee is not confirmed, allow for an amount to check on site or on the official website, and do not leave it to the last minute in your planning.
Who is it for? A couple who want an evening together can take the private night tour, and add the bike ride for the day. For a family with children, our research has no guidance on children: ask the operator before you book. The traveller on a tight budget should choose El Tatio or Vallecito, both at €43.10 per person. For a first outing, the Valley of the Moon at sunset lasts 4 hours 30 minutes and takes place at the end of the day. For people with reduced mobility, our research did not check the accessibility of the listings: ask the operator before you book.
Mistakes to avoid. Do not count the door-to-door duration. Book El Tatio without checking your hotel’s meeting point. Forget to pay for the El Tatio ticket (USD 19) in advance. Promise yourself a swim at the Baltinache lagoons without having confirmed it. Chain two long days without a break. Set off without layers for the early morning.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best-rated tour in San Pedro de Atacama?
The bike tour to the Devil’s Throat has the best rating on the list: 4.99 out of 5 for 110 reviews, with a private four-hour day and a guide. The red stones and altiplanic lagoons visit follows at 4.98 out of 5, on 202 reviews, but it lasts ten hours. Ratings are the combined average of Viator and TripAdvisor reviews, as checked on the API on 21 October 2026. See the bike tour.
How much does a tour in San Pedro de Atacama cost?
For the window checked, from 4 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, prices start at €43.10 per person based on 2 adults, with the Vallecito and Magic Bus visit or the El Tatio at dawn. Among the starting prices, the highest is €94.82 (Piedras Rojas and Chaxa day). Some stargazing options show a higher range, up to €226.57 per person. Prices may change: the amount shown at the time of booking prevails.
Do you really need to leave before dawn for the El Tatio geysers?
Yes. The half-day excursion listing gives a departure before sunrise, and published itineraries leave between 4:30 and 5:00 am. Breakfast is included on site. Bring layers, gloves and a warm hat for a field above 4,000 metres. The entrance ticket, USD 19 per person, is paid in advance. For hotels outside the pick-up zone, ask the operator for the meeting point before you book. See the listing.
Should you acclimatise before high-altitude tours?
San Pedro sits at about 2,450 metres, and El Tatio rises above 4,000 metres. Civitatis advises spending four to five days on site before the highest tours, and booking El Tatio at the end of your stay. For altitude sickness, speak to your doctor before you travel, especially if you have a heart or respiratory condition.
Can you swim in the Baltinache lagoons?
Nothing is guaranteed. The operator’s listing says that from 29 September 2026, swimming and floating are no longer allowed in the lagoons, while an older mention speaks of swimming being restored. Other sources also contradict each other. Before you leave, ask the operator whether swimming is allowed that day, and do not build your programme around it. See the listing.
What is the difference between the two stargazing options?
The group visit, « The Roofless Experience », lasts two to three hours, with two 16-inch telescopes and one photograph per person. It starts from €58.91 per person. The private « Under the Night Sky » tour lasts two and a half hours, with an air-conditioned vehicle, smartphone tripods and hot drinks, for €55.28 per person. Choose the group for the telescopes, and the private tour for an evening at your own pace.
