Santa Lucia is celebrated in Syracuse on 13 December, which falls on a Sunday in 2026. The official 2026 programme had not been published by 20 October 2026, so the reference is the 2025 edition, held from 9 to 26 December. Since 30 September 2026, the trains between Catania airport and Syracuse have been replaced by buses.

Checked on against the official sources cited (Vatican News, visitsicily.info, Trenitalia).

On 13 December, Syracuse celebrates Saint Lucy. The feast is the city’s main religious event: a silver statue carried through the streets, a procession that runs from Ortigia to the Borgata district on the mainland, and a Mass that tradition places on the morning of the 13th. This guide separates what is confirmed for 2026 from what is still to be confirmed, and explains how to get from Catania.

Saint Lucy, patron saint of Syracuse

According to italia.it, consulted on 20 October 2026, Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia) was born in Syracuse and martyred there in 304 AD. Vatican News ties her witness to the city, where it first shone out. The feast is fixed on 13 December in the liturgical calendar, and the city organises itself around that date every year.

She is also one of the most recognisable figures in Sicilian iconography. Italia.it shows her with a palm, a lily, a reliquary and a dish holding two eyes. That detail comes from the best-known legend about her: a judge fell for her eyes, and she is said to have torn them out and sent them to him. Vatican News makes clear that this is a story that has been told, not an established fact. Her name is linked to the Latin lux, light, and she is invoked against eye diseases.

According to Vatican News, the saint’s body was kept in Venice for eight centuries. The letter the Pope addressed to the Church of Syracuse, dated 13 December 2024, concerns a temporary transfer of the relics to the city. The full text was not read for this article: only the title and date were checked on vatican.va.

When the feast takes place in 2026

The 13 December date is fixed, since it marks the day of the saint’s martyrdom. In 2026, that day falls on a Sunday. The rest of the calendar changes from year to year. As of 20 October 2026, the 2026 programme had not been published. A commercial source dated 10 October 2026, TimeForSicily, sketches one that repeats the 2025 dates. The table below therefore uses the 2025 programme as a reference, to be carried over with caution.

Two points help when reading this table. First, 20 December does not appear on the 2025 page of visitsicily.info: it comes from italia.it, which gives this date as the return of the statue. Second, 9 December marks the opening of the statue’s niche in the 2025 programme, not the start of the Masses. A visitor planning a stay should treat 13 December as the only certain date, and the rest as assumptions to check.

The 13 December procession, from the Duomo to the Borgata

The feast traditionally includes a pontifical Mass on the morning of the 13th; the 2026 programme has not been published. In the afternoon, the silver statue, kept in a chapel of the Duomo (cathedral), leaves the building in procession. Italia.it gives a departure around 3:30 pm, which is the time of the 2025 procession carried over; that time is not confirmed for 2026. The other sources consulted give 3 pm, 3:30 pm or 4 pm: plan for a window and check the exact time with the city.

The procession crosses Ortigia, goes over the bridges to the mainland and reaches the basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro, in the Borgata district. One secondary page, not verified, puts the arrival around 10:30 pm. The return of the statue and relics to the Duomo follows the same route in reverse, according to italia.it, on 20 December, a date not confirmed for 2026.

Some of the faithful who walk with the procession go barefoot or carry long lit candles, either to give thanks or to ask for a favour, according to tourism sources. It is a devotion, not a show: visitors follow the procession as respectful spectators and do not block the route.

  • Check the departure time in the 2026 programme published by the city before planning the rest of the day.
  • One unconfirmed research summary reports disrupted traffic on the island and on the bridges in the afternoon. This has not been checked with the local mobility services.
  • Bring a jacket: December is mild in Syracuse, but evenings are cool and the procession can run past nightfall.
Pixidia tip: do not book a train or a fixed-time ticket for the evening of 13 December until the 2026 programme is published. A departure announced for around 3:30 pm can shift by several minutes, and the arrival at the sepulchre is still to be confirmed.

Cuccìa and arancine: the sources credit Palermo

On 13 December, Balarm, in an article dated 11 December 2018, describes a custom in Palermo: people avoid bread and pasta and eat panelle, arancine (fried rice balls) and cuccìa (boiled wheat served with ricotta, sugar or chocolate, depending on the recipe). TimeForSicily, a commercial source consulted on 20 October 2026, describes cuccìa in a Syracuse context, with honey and cinnamon, and mentions savoury versions. No official source read confirms this description: treat it as an indication.

The gesture recalls a famine. According to tradition, a ship carrying wheat arrived during the famine of 1646, and people boiled the grain without grinding it. Balarm places this account in Palermo; in Syracuse, some blogs repeat a version of it, without a primary source.

Key takeaway: the sources read credit arancine and cuccìa to Palermo. For Syracuse, no official source read names a dish for 13 December.

The May feast, which is not the December one

Syracuse celebrates Saint Lucy twice a year. In May, the feast of the Patrocinio fills the city from 26 April to 10 May 2026: the relics are presented on 26 April, the archbishop celebrates Mass on 2 May, a pontifical Mass takes place on Sunday 3 May at 10:00 am, the octave runs until 10 May, and a procession goes through Ortigia from 6:30 pm that day. The calendar comes from the daily Quotidiano di Ragusa, published on 27 April 2026.

The rite is different. In May, the release of doves recalls the miracle of 1646: a dove landed on the bishop’s throne during a prayer, announcing the arrival of ships loaded with food. The popular name « Santa Lucia delle Quaglie » refers to quails, but the historical source cited by English Wikipedia speaks of doves. For a stay in May, the feast runs until 10 May; in December, the procession leaves the Duomo on the 13th.

Places to see during the feast

Ortigia Walk of about 15 to 20 minutes (estimate) Catacombs: tickets at the box office

The cathedral of Ortigia (the Duomo) keeps the silver statue of Saint Lucy in a dedicated chapel, and the procession sets out from there. On the same square, the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia has a baroque façade with a wrought-iron balcony and a ceramic-tiled floor inside, according to GetYourGuide (consulted on 20 October 2026). Its high altar holds the painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Lucy, not to be confused with Caravaggio’s Burial of Saint Lucy.

Across the bridges, the basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro houses the octagonal 17th-century tomb, designed by Giovanni Vermexio according to Lonely Planet France. It marks the end of the 13 December procession. The walk from Ortigia takes 15 to 20 minutes, according to a research estimate to be checked on site.

Caravaggio’s Burial of Saint Lucy was painted for the basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro. A page on visitaresiracusa.it recalls the commission from the Senate of Syracuse in 1608. The sources read, however, do not agree on where the painting is now: one page places it at the sepulchre, an online summary puts it at the high altar without a reliable source. Ask the basilica before making the trip.

The Santa Lucia catacombs are visited on a guided tour of about two hours, according to visitaresiracusa.it. Secret Siracusa lists €10 at full price and €7 at the reduced rate, with free entry up to age 6. Online sales are suspended: tickets are bought on site, at the box office.

Pixidia tip: site prices change from one year to the next. Confirm them at the box office or with the site operator before planning the day.

Outside the feast: the street food tour below is not linked to the 13 December procession. It suits anyone who wants to eat in Ortigia before or after the procession. Its opening days are not listed here: check the product page before booking.

From Catania: suspended train, bus and taxi

Three ways to reach Syracuse

Train suspended Bus every 30 minutes Taxi, priced by number of passengers

The train between Catania airport (Fontanarossa) and Syracuse has been suspended since 30 September 2026 at 11:00 pm and replaced by buses. The Trenitalia notice gives no end date, and no official resumption date has been announced to date. Do not count on the train for the feast.

A commercial guide reports departures every 30 minutes from the airport. The guide from bluekeys.it gives €6.20 per trip, about 70 minutes, a first departure at 7:10 am and a last at 11:10 pm, with a last bus on Sunday at 10:10 pm. These times and this fare still need confirming. The same guide mentions a stop at On. Giuseppe Rubino, cited for the Trenitalia link; the Interbus stop is not confirmed. The customer service line, 06 164 160, is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm: it is not reachable on Sunday 13 December, the day of the feast.

A taxi remains the most flexible option, especially for a group. The fare depends on the number of passengers; no official tariff was checked. Confirm the price with the driver before setting off.

Pixidia tip: if you arrive on 12 or 13 December, book the transfer the day before and keep the driver’s number. A late bus or a trip held up by the procession can cost an hour.

Indicative budget for a stay around the feast

The items below are checked prices, excluding accommodation and meals. They are enough to set a range, provided you confirm them before you travel.

  • Airport bus transfer: about €6.20 per person per trip, to be confirmed with Interbus.
  • Taxi from the airport: no official tariff checked; ask the driver.
  • Guided catacomb tour: €10 at full price, €7 reduced, free for ages 0 to 6.
  • Accommodation: no verified rate for 12 to 20 December 2026. Tourism sources recommend Ortigia or the Borgata, and booking several weeks ahead.

For a traveller who takes the bus and visits the catacombs, the spending mostly depends on the bus fare (€6.20 per trip, to be confirmed) and on the catacomb price, which is disputed (€10 according to the sources). With a taxi shared between several people, the choice changes: compare before booking.

December weather: mild, with cool evenings

The 1991-2020 averages, recorded at the Cozzo Spadaro station about 45 km from the centre, give a December mean of 14°C, a mean high of 17°C, a mean low of 11°C and 113 mm of rain. Source: climate-zone.com, consulted on 20 October 2026. These are thirty-year averages, not a forecast for 2026. Days are short, and the procession can run after dark: a jacket and walking shoes are enough for the day. If you extend your trip to northern Italy in December, the Christmas markets of Bolzano, Merano, Trento and Bressanone offer a different, more alpine atmosphere.

What other guides don’t tell you

Mainstream guides often repeat the same information, sometimes out of date. Here are six points drawn from official sources, from site managers or from the press, as of 20 October 2026.

  • The train between Catania airport and Syracuse is suspended. Guides still present it as an option. Trenitalia, notice of 30 September 2026 (consulted on 20 October 2026), notice of works.
  • Syracuse’s tourist office closed for the patron saint’s feast. It closed on 13 December 2023. No notice for 2025 or 2026 has been found, and 13 December 2026 is a Sunday. Sicilian Region, notice of 15 November 2023 (consulted on 20 October 2026), Servizio Turistico Siracusa.
  • Arancine is credited to Palermo. Balarm also cites cuccìa in Palermo, and a commercial source gives it for Syracuse, with no official source read. Mainstream roundups often mix up the two cities. Balarm, 11 December 2018 (consulted on 20 October 2026), article on Palermo.
  • The official 2026 programme has not been published. The 20 December return, cited by italia.it, is not confirmed for 2026 and does not appear on the 2025 page of visitsicily.info. Visit Sicily, 2025 programme (consulted on 20 October 2026), 2025 feast page.
  • There are two feasts, in December and in May. The May Patrocinio ran from 26 April to 10 May 2026, with a pontifical Mass on 3 May. General guides often mix them up. Quotidiano di Ragusa, 27 April 2026 (consulted on 20 October 2026), article on the Patrocinio.
  • The catacombs cannot be booked online. Online sales are suspended, and tickets are bought at the box office on site. Some guides still mention online booking. Secret Siracusa (consulted on 20 October 2026), ticket page.
