Sinterklaas arrives in the Netherlands on Saturday 14 November 2026, in Grave (North Brabant), from 12:00 to 16:00. The steamboat docks around 12:00 at the Maaskade, then the procession heads to the Markt. The ceremony is broadcast live on NPO Zapp (NPO 3) from 12:00. Times and location can change, so check the town’s agenda the day before.

Checked on against the official sources cited (sinterklaas.nl, gemeente Land van Cuijk, St. Nicholas Center).

This year, the national Sinterklaas arrival isn’t in Amsterdam. It takes place in Grave, a small fortified town in North Brabant on the Maas (Meuse). For most visitors coming from the UK or the US, two questions matter: how to get there, since Grave has no train station, and which day to see the steamboat once the ceremony is over.

Grave, the Maaskade and the Markt

Saturday 14 November 2026 12:00 to 16:00 Live on NPO Zapp from 12:00 Maaskade, 5361 GB Grave

The national arrival is in Grave because the NTR broadcaster announced that choice on 24 February 2026. The last national arrival in Brabant was in Woudrichem in 2000, and the one before it in Breda in 1976 (NL Times). According to the programme published by the municipality of Land van Cuijk, the steamboat docks around 12:00 at the Maaskade, the quay on the Maas in the historic centre, and the procession then heads up to the Markt. The official programme runs from 12:00 to 16:00 but doesn’t say when the ceremony ends on the square. Mayor Marieke Moorman welcomes Sinterklaas on arrival (gemeente Land van Cuijk).

The detailed route is published by the municipality on a separate page. The go-kids guide, an unofficial site, suggests the Maasstraat, Sint Jorisstraat and Rogstraat as viewpoints. Check the official route the day before, because the municipality says the location and times can change.

For crowds, the local paper Stad aan de Maas expects 15,000 to 17,000 visitors (article of 3 September 2026, unofficial local source). No official attendance figure had been published when we wrote this.

How to make the most of the day

  • Get there before 12:00: the square fills up early, according to go-kids.
  • Pack a hooded rain jacket rather than an umbrella. Wind and rain are more of a problem on a packed square.
  • With small children, bring ear defenders and a baby carrier. Cobblestones don’t always work with a pushchair.
  • Agree a meeting point in case you get separated.
  • For toilets, go-kids cites the Toeristisch Informatiepunt (Hoofdwagt) and the Stadsmuseum (Hampoort).
Pixidia tip: traffic measures (closed roads, parking bans) start coming into force gradually from Monday 9 November 2026. Follow the official parking route and the traffic marshals, not your usual car park. A message from Grave’s historical association mentions a parking permit or proof of parking for 14 November. The municipality hadn’t confirmed this when we wrote, so check before you set off.

A self-guided walk of Den Bosch, another town in North Brabant, doesn’t fit around the Grave ceremony on 14 November without a journey we haven’t checked. We only offer it as an option for another day of your trip to the region.

Getting to Grave from London or Paris

Grave has no train station. Buses run from Nijmegen, Oss and Cuijk and stop at the Hoofdwagt in the centre (go-kids, unofficial source). Older listings give conflicting bus numbers, so we don’t publish them: check the official journey planner before you go. We haven’t checked the bus journey time or fare, so we don’t give them here.

From London, the simplest route is the direct Eurostar from St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal, which journey guides put at around 4 hours. Check Eurostar’s live timetable and service status before you book. From Paris, the Eurostar to Amsterdam Centraal takes about 3 h 20 to 3 h 30 according to a 2026 travel guide (Kombo, a secondary source). Routes with a change on TGV inOUI or OUIGO, then a Dutch Intercity, take 4 to more than 6 hours according to the same guide. From Amsterdam, the last leg goes via Nijmegen, Oss or Cuijk, where the bus to Grave starts. We haven’t checked the duration or cost of those connections.

Eindhoven airport is about 42 km as the crow flies from Grave (luftlinie.org, straight-line distance, not travel time). We found no direct Eindhoven to Paris flight in our searches on 11 October 2026, which doesn’t prove there isn’t one: check the airlines’ sites.

The Netherlands has reinstated checks at its internal borders, notably with Belgium and Germany. The extension published in the EU Official Journal ran until 30 September 2026 (EUR-Lex, OJ C/2026/4085). The European Commission refused a further extension and asked the Netherlands to stop these extra checks (NL Times, 3 June 2026). We haven’t found the status after 30 September: carry valid ID and check the Dutch government’s site before you travel.

UK passport holders: the FCDO entry requirements page (checked on 12 October 2026) says your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and must expire at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area. It also says the Entry/Exit System is being phased in, which means fingerprints and a photo on your first visit. Its notice says the additional Dutch entry checks ran until 8 June 2026, so confirm the current position on the Dutch government’s site before you travel.

The other arrivals the same weekend

Texel, Cuijk and Amsterdam: don’t mix them up

The most likely mistake is booking the wrong arrival. Three other ceremonies are announced around that date: Texel (Saturday 14 November), Cuijk (Sunday 15 November) and Amsterdam, whose 2026 date isn’t confirmed. None of them is the national arrival.

  • Texel, Saturday 14 November: local arrival at Oudeschild at 12:30, near the harbour office, then a parade through Den Burg from 14:00 (VVV Texel).
  • Cuijk, Sunday 15 November: local arrival at the Loswal and the Maaskade in Cuijk, permitted by the municipality on 26 August 2026 (Omroep Brabant). Cuijk and Grave are in the same municipality, but these are two separate events.
  • Amsterdam: the St. Nicholas Center says the parade traditionally takes place on the Sunday after the arrival. No official source we read confirms the 2026 date.
Pixidia tip: if you’re extending your stay in Amsterdam, our guide Amsterdam Light Festival 2026-2027: cruise, walk or bike? will help you plan the evenings. The tulip fields have their own guide: Keukenhof 2027: 10 Experiences Among the Tulip Fields from Amsterdam.

The Pakjesbootdagen in Grave

15 to 18 November 2026 Visit of 30 to 40 minutes Booking required

After the arrival, the steamboat stays at the quay and can be visited. The Pakjesbootdagen (roughly, « parcel boat days ») in Grave run on Sunday 15 November from 10:00 to 17:30, then on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 November from 14:00 to 18:00, and on Wednesday 18 November from 12:00 to 18:00, at the location shown on the site (De Hoppenaar, Poortwachtershuis). Groups hold 20 to 25 people, with a departure every 10 to 15 minutes or so (go-kids, unofficial source).

Sunday uses the weekend rate, Monday and Tuesday use the « ma/di » rate, and Wednesday uses the « wo/vr » (Wednesday and Friday) rate. Monday and Tuesday offer shorter slots, 14:00 to 18:00. No attendance figures are published, so we can’t say whether they’re quieter.

One thing to watch: booking is online at sailing.recras.com (identifier 124), and the page says it’s required. Book before you travel.

Pixidia tip: if you can’t come on 14 November, Sunday 15 is the only day the boat is open at the weekend. Wednesday 18 offers the longest slot (12:00 to 18:00, two hours more than Monday or Tuesday), for €0.50 more per person.

The December celebrations

Gift evening and St Nicholas Day

Pakjesavond: Saturday 5 December 2026 St Nicholas Day: Sunday 6 December

Pakjesavond, the gift evening, falls on Saturday 5 December 2026. The St. Nicholas Center lists it as the end of the festivities, with presents, songs, pepernoten (small spiced biscuits) and chocolate letters. Sinterklaas travels from Spain by boat and visits homes, schools and churches until 5 December (St. Nicholas Center).

6 December is St Nicholas Day in the liturgical calendar, a Sunday in 2026. The St. Nicholas Center doesn’t present it as a separate celebration from the 5th. An expat guide says Sinterklaas leaves that day, but gives no source, so we don’t repeat it.

On TV, the Sinterklaasjournaal (a children’s news programme) airs every day at around 18:00 on NPO Zapp (NPO 3), from Monday 9 November to Saturday 5 December 2026 (TV Gids, Ziggo).

Pixidia tip: for a stay around 5 December, the festivities are denser in Amsterdam and the big cities than in Grave. Check each town’s dates before you book, because the official pages we read don’t date the end of the Sint’s stay.

How big the celebration is

A survey published on 13 November 2025 by an online prize draw (a private source, method not verified by us) says 52% of Dutch people celebrate Sinterklaas, up from 49% the year before. Planned spending on presents averaged €134, the highest since 2017. These are 2025 figures: we haven’t found an equivalent for 2026.

Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas and the Pieten

Sinterklaas comes from Saint Nicholas, bishop of Myra in Asia Minor (now Turkey). His cult is very old, and the best-known legend says he gave a dowry to three young women by tossing it through a window. The popular accounts we read don’t agree on the dates of his life, so we don’t give them here.

The Pieten accompany the Sint on arrival. The St. Nicholas Center mentions « many colourful Pieten » in Grave. We didn’t find the exact rule the NTR publishes on how they should look in the pages we read. Don’t guess: check the broadcaster’s site if this matters to you.

Zwarte Piet: what the 2025 facts say

The debate over Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) is still live in the Netherlands. The facts we can source date from 2025, and we present them without taking a side.

  • The Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP) campaign and its foundation ended their work after 5 December 2025. Their three stated goals were to remove Zwarte Piet from public space, improve teaching about colonial slavery, and make 1 July a public holiday (AT5, NL Times, 6 November 2025).
  • In the final month of its campaign, KOZP was still talking with ten municipalities about their Pieten (NL Times, 6 November 2025).
  • In Texel in 2025, KOZP withdrew its demonstration after talks with the mayor (NOS).
  • In Yerseke, the committee cancelled the parade on Saturday 15 November 2025 for security reasons, citing a national threat aimed at several activist groups (NOS).

No 2026 data on this subject had been found when we wrote this, as the 2026 parades haven’t taken place yet. If you attend a celebration, follow the local tone.

What other guides don’t tell you

The general guides we read say the arrival is « mid-November » or « the second or third weekend ». As of 11 October 2026, the official pages settle the following points.

  • The 2026 arrival is on Saturday 14 November. The official site confirms it, whereas one expat guide only says the second or third weekend, and Amsterdam.info gives « mid-November » without a year (sinterklaas.nl, checked on 11 October 2026).
  • The steamboat stays at the quay after the arrival. The Pakjesbootdagen in Grave run from 15 to 18 November 2026, by booking, with a rate per day. Guides from 2019 and expat guides don’t mention them (pakjesbootdagen.nl, checked on 11 October 2026).
  • Three other arrivals fall the same weekend. Texel on Saturday 14 November at 12:30 and Cuijk on Sunday 15 November are local arrivals, not to be confused with the national one (texel.net and Omroep Brabant, checked on 11 October 2026).
  • The season ends on 5 December, not 6. The St. Nicholas Center says « until December 5 (the Eve of Sinterklaas) ». An expat guide gives 6 December without a source (St. Nicholas Center, checked on 11 October 2026).

Frequently asked questions about Sinterklaas 2026

What date is Sinterklaas arriving in 2026?

The national arrival is on Saturday 14 November 2026, in Grave, North Brabant. The official programme has the steamboat docking around 12:00 and a slot from 12:00 to 16:00. The date is confirmed by the official site sinterklaas.nl and by the municipality of Land van Cuijk, both checked on 11 October 2026. If you want to see the boat arrive, leave early.

What time and where does the arrival happen?

The steamboat docks around 12:00 at the Maaskade, the quay on the Maas in Grave’s historic centre (5361 GB). The procession heads to the Markt. The official programme gives 12:00 to 16:00 but doesn’t say when the ceremony ends on the square. NPO Zapp (NPO 3) broadcasts the arrival live from 12:00. Times and location can change, so the organiser advises checking the town’s agenda before the day.

Do I need a ticket to watch the arrival?

The arrival is public, and none of the official pages we read mentions tickets. According to go-kids, an unofficial site, entry is free, but confirm this with the municipality. The visit to the steamboat at the quay after the arrival, the Pakjesbootdagen, does require booking online at sailing.recras.com.

Is there a train to Grave?

No, Grave has no station. From Paris, the Eurostar to Amsterdam Centraal takes about 3 h 20 to 3 h 30 according to a 2026 guide (secondary source). From London, the direct Eurostar from St Pancras takes about 4 hours. From Amsterdam, the last leg goes via Nijmegen, Oss or Cuijk, then a bus to the Hoofdwagt stop in the centre (go-kids, unofficial source). We haven’t checked the duration or fare of these connections, so check the official journey planner.

How much does the steamboat visit cost?

Per person, the visit costs €20.00 for children aged 1 to 12 and €19.00 from age 13 on Sunday 15 November. On Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 November the rates are €19.00 and €18.00, and on Wednesday 18 November €19.50 and €18.50. Booking is required. Prices checked on pakjesbootdagen.nl on 11 October 2026.

When are St Nicholas and the gift evening?

Pakjesavond, the gift evening, falls on Saturday 5 December 2026. St Nicholas Day is on the calendar as Sunday 6 December 2026. The St. Nicholas Center presents 5 December as the end of the festivities. An expat guide gives 6 December without a reliable source, so we don’t use it.

Is the Sinterklaasjournaal on TV in 2026?

Yes. The programme airs every day at around 18:00 on NPO Zapp (NPO 3), from Monday 9 November to Saturday 5 December 2026, according to TV Gids and Ziggo, checked on 11 October 2026. The announced reporters are Stephanie van Eer and Jeroen Kramer.

Does Zwarte Piet still exist?

The sourced facts date from 2025. The Kick Out Zwarte Piet campaign ended its work after 5 December 2025, saying it had reached its goals. As of writing, we haven’t found any 2026 data on the Pieten. Views remain divided, and we don’t take a side in the debate.

What about the arrival in Amsterdam?

According to the St. Nicholas Center, the Amsterdam parade traditionally takes place on the Sunday after the national arrival. For 2026, no official source we read confirms the date, so don’t book on that basis. Amsterdam.info says « mid-November » every year, without a year. Check the city’s official agenda before you plan.
