The first dates announced fall on 21 November 2026: Tignes’ season runs from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 according to tignes.net, and Val Thorens opens that same day. Courchevel announces 4 December, and most other resorts follow between 28 November and 12 December. These dates are announced and depend on snow.
Checked on against the official sources cited (tignes.net, courchevel.com, les3vallees.com).
When do the slopes open this winter? The question comes back every year, and the answer is never a single date. Between an official season, an opening event, a date announced by a resort and a calendar repeated by a guide, the sources don’t always agree. This article separates what is official from what is only announced. All figures were checked on 18 October 2026.
Four reliability levels are used throughout the text:
- Official: date published on the website of the resort or ski area.
- Dated third party: date repeated by a specialist site that states its source or its update date.
- Forecast: date given before the season, subject to snow conditions.
- Not yet published: information that does not exist yet on this date, such as the season’s prices or the programme of opening events.
1. Tignes, Val Thorens and Courchevel: the three dates to know

Three resorts, three dates to know
Tignes and Courchevel are the two resorts whose official website was read in detail for this article. For Val Thorens, the opening date comes from the page of the 3 Vallées ski area, as the resort’s own site could not be consulted. These dates are announced by the ski areas: they still depend on snow, as they do every year.
Key points
- Tignes (official): season from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, according to tignes.net, with no separate date for the lifts.
- Val Thorens (official for the opening): 21 November 2026, according to the 3 Vallées ski area page.
- Courchevel (official): 4 December 2026, according to courchevel.com.
For skiing in Courchevel, Viator offers a two-hour private lesson in the afternoon. Meet at the snow front in Courchevel 1850: ski under the bridge, with the Croisette lift station building on your left, towards Courchevel Village, then turn right as you leave the tunnel. Six dates were verified on 18 October 2026 (13, 14, 15, 17, 18 and 20 December); no date is open between 4 and 12 December, the week Courchevel opens. Confirmation is instant, cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure, and you show the ticket on your phone. It is the only lesson found through an open search across the three resorts, but it has only seven reviews (rated 4.7 out of 5): we present it as an option, not as a recommendation.
Tignes: an official season and an opening event
Tignes’ official page announces a season from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, with an event called “Opening” on 21 and 22 November. That Opening is presented as an entertainment programme: it does not say the lifts open that day, and it gives no separate date for the lifts and the pistes. The page also mentions “snow guaranteed all winter”. That is a commitment on snow cover, not an opening date.
Val Thorens: an official opening, a closing date in dispute
The 3 Vallées ski area announces Val Thorens from 21 November 2026. The resort’s own site could not be consulted, so we only cite the ski area page. For the end of the season, the sources do not agree. The 3 Vallées page gives 18 April 2027 as the end of the ski area season, while guide-ski and skiinfo give 2 May 2027 for the Val Thorens – Orelle sector. Rather than choose between them, this article presents both dates without retaining either.
Orelle, linked to Val Thorens by a gondola ride of about fifteen minutes (skiinfo, checked on 18 October 2026), is announced from 21 November 2026 by the 3 Vallées ski area. Skiinfo presents that date as a forecast. Its closing date follows the same dispute: 2 May 2027 according to guide-ski and skiinfo, against 18 April 2027 on the ski area page.
Courchevel: the official date is 4 December
The courchevel.com site announces a season “from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027”, with no forecast qualifier. Several third-party tables, including those of Pierre et Vacances and skiinfo, give 5 December: we keep the ski area’s own date, 4 December. The snow report on the page was still empty when we checked it, so it tells us nothing about the state of the snow.
2. The dates table, resort by resort
The table covers the main Alpine resorts. The Status column shows how reliable each date is. When a closing date was not published in the sources we read, the cell says so rather than guessing.
| Resort | Opening announced | Closing announced | Status | Main source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tignes | 21 Nov 2026 (season) | 2 May 2027 | Official (season) | tignes.net |

| Orelle | 21 Nov 2026 | 2 May 2027 according to guide-ski and skiinfo, in conflict with the 18 April date from the ski area | Announced by the ski area; forecast according to skiinfo | les3vallees.com, skiinfo.fr |

Source: official pages tignes.net, courchevel.com and les3vallees.com; dated third-party tables guide-ski.fr and skiinfo.fr, checked on 18 October 2026.
Chamonix needs a note: guide-ski announces an opening sector by sector, starting with the Grands Montets and La Flégère, with no single date for the valley.
3. The 3 Vallées: an opening sector by sector
The 3 Vallées ski area publishes one date per sector on its official page dedicated to the opening of lifts and pistes. That page does not use the word “forecast”, whereas most third-party tables label the other ski areas that way: read these dates as the ski area’s own announcements, without treating them as final.
- 21 November 2026: Val Thorens and Orelle (official, ski area page).
- 5 December 2026: Méribel, Les Menuires, Brides-les-Bains, and the links between sectors (official).
- 12 December 2026: Saint-Martin-de-Belleville (official).
- 18 April 2027: end of the ski area season (official).
Brides-les-Bains is linked to the ski area by the Olympe gondola, according to guide-ski (dated third party, checked on 18 October 2026). The links between sectors therefore open on the same day as the main Méribel and Les Menuires sectors: from 5 December 2026, you can ski from one sector to another, provided there is enough snow. For a reading without error, note that the French version of the official page returns a 404 error: the English version is the only one that could be read on this date.
4. Val d’Isère and the link with Tignes: third-party dates
Val d’Isère is announced from 28 November 2026 by guide-ski and skiinfo. Neither date was confirmed on the resort’s official site when we checked. Write it as a date announced by third parties, never as a date confirmed by the resort.
Guide-ski also mentions a Premières Traces weekend on 28 and 29 November 2026. The 2026 programme of this event was not published on 18 October. The programmes you will find online describe the 2025 edition: don’t wait for them for 2026.
The Tignes – Val d’Isère link is given from 28 November 2026 by guide-ski (dated third party). The official Tignes page mentions this link without giving a date. Until one of the two ski areas confirms it, 28 November remains a third-party date. A day-ticket price found in a guide, with no year given, is not repeated here: it does not match any verified season.
5. Pyrenees, Megève, Flaine and the Massif Central: almost all dates are forecasts
In the Pyrenees, almost all the dates come from N’PY, whose page was updated on 17 October 2026. They are presented as forecasts. Luz-Ardiden opens first (25 November), with the note “if conditions allow”. The other resorts follow between 27 November and 5 December, as shown in the table below.
| Resort | Range | Opening announced | Status | Main source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luz-Ardiden | Pyrenees | 25 Nov 2026 | Forecast | N’PY, guide-ski.fr |
| Cauterets | Pyrenees | 27 Nov 2026 (N’PY) or 6 Dec (skiinfo) | Forecast, sources in conflict | N’PY, skiinfo.fr |
| Les Angles | Pyrenees | 28 Nov 2026 | Forecast | N’PY |
| Piau-Engaly | Pyrenees | 4 Dec 2026 | Forecast | N’PY |
| Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000 | Pyrenees | 4 Dec 2026 | Forecast | N’PY, Pierre et Vacances |
| Saint-Lary | Pyrenees | 5 Dec 2026 (N’PY, skiinfo) or 4 Dec (Pierre et Vacances) | Forecast, slight gap | N’PY, skiinfo.fr |
| Gourette, Grand Tourmalet, Peyragudes, La Pierre Saint-Martin | Pyrenees | 5 Dec 2026 | Forecast | N’PY |
| Megève | Alps | 5-6 Dec (pre-opening); 19 Dec (general); 12 Dec according to skiinfo | Forecast; closing 4 Apr 2027 (guide-ski) | guide-ski.fr, skiinfo.fr |
| Flaine | Alps | 5 Dec 2026 | Dated third party | guide-ski.fr, skiinfo.fr |
| Le Lioran | Massif Central | 19 Dec 2026 | Dated third party | guide-ski.fr |
| Super-Besse | Massif Central | 18 Dec 2026 | Forecast | guide-ski.fr |
| La Bresse-Hohneck | Vosges | 19 Dec 2026 | Forecast | guide-ski.fr |
| Les Rousses | Jura | 5 Dec 2026 | Forecast | guide-ski.fr |
Source: N’PY, opening dates (updated 17 October 2026), guide-ski.fr and skiinfo.fr, checked on 18 October 2026.
Cauterets is the clearest case of disagreement: 27 November according to N’PY and guide-ski, 6 December according to skiinfo. We do not settle it. Read this date as “late November or early December, depending on the source”, and confirm it with the resort before you book. Megève announces a pre-opening on 5 and 6 December, then a general opening on 19 December according to guide-ski, with closing on 4 April 2027. Skiinfo gives 12 December for the opening: that gap should be noted and checked with the resort.
For the Pyrenees, the closing falls at the end of March or early April. Luz-Ardiden is announced until 28 March 2027 and Gourette until 29 March 2027, still according to N’PY and as forecasts. The Massif Central and Vosges resorts open later, from 18 or 19 December, with a more fragile opening in years of low snowfall.
6. The 2025-2026 season review, to gauge demand
To put the dates in perspective, here is the review published by the Observatoire national des stations de montagne (ANMSM and Atout France), relayed by TourMaG on 10 April 2026. It covers the occupancy rate of the resorts, compared with the previous season.
| Indicator | 2025-2026 | 2024-2025 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average occupancy rate | 73% | 71% | TourMaG (10 Apr 2026), ANMSM and Atout France |
| Christmas holidays | 86% | 85% | Same |
| January | 67% | 64% | Same |
| Winter school holidays | 81% | 84% | Same |
| March | 57% | 52% | Same |
Source: TourMaG, citing ANMSM and Atout France, checked on 18 October 2026.
Attendance rose by 2.5% compared with the previous season, according to the same source. Winter school holidays, by contrast, fell from 84% to 81%, a drop partly attributed to the school calendar. Other declines have been reported for other periods; we do not repeat them, as we have not read a source for them.
7. Why dates move, and by how much
An opening date can cover several different things. There is the opening of the lifts, the opening of the pistes, the pre-opening of a weekend, the general opening a few days later, and the links between ski areas, which often open after the home ski area. Reading a date without knowing which one it refers to can lead to a mistake.
The main factor remains snow. The highest resorts, or those with a glacier, usually open first: that is the pattern that stands out from the tables we read, not an official rule. The others rely on artificial snow, which needs long enough cold spells. Pierre et Vacances points out that unusually mild weather can delay the opening by a few days.
Skiinfo gives the most precise order of magnitude we found: an opening a few days early if the snow is there, or a delay of one to two weeks if it is not. This is a dated third-party source, checked on 18 October 2026.
No Météo-France snow bulletin for November 2026 had been published on the date we checked. What can be verified today is the calendar announced by the ski areas, not the actual state of the snow.
8. Choosing a resort by profile
The dates above are mainly useful for deciding on the right time, and then on the right ski area. The 3 Vallées, for example, opens sector by sector: 21 November, 5 December, then 12 December for Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, according to the official page.
For a first time or a family
For a family trip, the useful question is whether the ski area offers pistes and lifts suited to beginners, and on what date those sectors open. The official pages we read do not detail this offer for 2026-2027: check the piste map each ski area publishes when you book.
For a large linked ski area
The 3 Vallées opens in stages. Between 21 November and 5 December 2026, only the first sectors are announced as open, and the links between sectors only open from 5 December. If you travel early, you can start in one sector and join the others as the links open.
For a tight budget
No 2026-2027 price list was read for this article, so we publish no price for this season. Compare prices for equivalent dates on each ski area’s sales page.
Practical information before you book
Accommodation and booking date
Book once the opening date has been confirmed by the resort, and allow a margin for a gradual opening. A free cancellation or a fee-free change will save you from paying for a date that slips by a few days. We don’t quote any amount: each host sets its own conditions.
Access and links
For Orelle and Val Thorens, the gondola ride of about fifteen minutes is described by skiinfo (dated third party, checked on 18 October 2026). For Tignes and Val d’Isère, the link is announced from 28 November by guide-ski, with no official confirmation. Check the status of the link on the ski area websites on the day you leave.
Passes and prices
No official price list for the 2026-2027 season was read. The prices found online date from earlier seasons or carry no year. Check each ski area’s sales pages before comparing. When these prices are published, compare them with the checking date shown on the page.

What other guides don’t tell you: three gaps to know
Three dates in the sources don’t read as obvious. At Tignes, the opening event on 21 and 22 November is an entertainment programme: the official page announces no separate date for the lifts. At Val Thorens, the 3 Vallées ski area gives an end of season on 18 April 2027, whereas guide-ski and skiinfo say 2 May 2027: we do not settle it. At Courchevel, the official site announces 4 December 2026, whereas several third parties give 5 December.
Before booking, ask the resort or ski area for the lift opening date, and keep the booking cancellable.
Frequently asked questions about ski resort opening dates 2026-2027
When do ski resorts open this winter?
The first dates announced fall on 21 November 2026: Tignes’ season (from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, according to the resort’s website), and the opening of Val Thorens and Orelle, for the 3 Vallées ski area. Courchevel announces 4 December according to its official site. Most other ski areas announce an opening between 28 November and 12 December. These are announced dates, subject to snow (tignes.net, courchevel.com, checked on 18 October 2026).
What is Tignes’ opening date for 2026-2027?
The official Tignes page announces a season from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, checked on 18 October 2026. It also announces an event called “Opening” on 21 and 22 November, presented as an entertainment programme. It gives no separate date for the opening of the lifts and pistes: check the resort’s snow report before you go (tignes.net).
When does Val Thorens open this winter?
The 3 Vallées ski area announces Val Thorens from 21 November 2026, on the official page checked on 18 October 2026. The resort’s own site could not be read. The closing date is in dispute between sources: this article presents both dates without choosing one (les3vallees.com).
When does Courchevel open?
The official site courchevel.com announces a season from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, with no forecast qualifier, as of the checking date of 18 October 2026. That is therefore the date we use. The page did not yet have a usable snow report (courchevel.com).
When does Val d’Isère open?
Guide-ski and skiinfo announce 28 November 2026, with a Premières Traces weekend on 28 and 29 November according to guide-ski. These dates were not confirmed by the resort’s official site at the checking date, so they remain third-party dates. The 2026 programme of the event had not been published (guide-ski.fr).
When do ski resorts close?
Tignes closes on 2 May 2027 according to its official site. The next most cited closing dates are 2 May 2027 for Val d’Isère and Les 2 Alpes (third party), 18 April 2027 for Courchevel and for the end of the 3 Vallées season, and 24 April 2027 for La Plagne (guide-ski, dated third party). For Orelle and Val Thorens, the sources conflict: 2 May 2027 according to guide-ski and skiinfo, 18 April 2027 on the 3 Vallées page; no date is settled (les3vallees.com, skiinfo.fr). The Pyrenees close at the end of March or early April, as forecasts (N’PY).
Are opening dates guaranteed?
No. No date is guaranteed, because opening depends on snow. Third-party dates are forecasts. According to skiinfo, an opening can be brought forward by a few days if the snow is there, or postponed by one to two weeks if it is not (skiinfo.fr). Pierre et Vacances recommends checking the official snow report 48 to 72 hours before departure (Pierre et Vacances).
How many resorts open in November 2026?
The guide-ski table lists about ten ski areas opening in November 2026: Tignes, Val Thorens, Orelle, Luz-Ardiden, Cauterets, Val d’Isère, Les 2 Alpes, Montgenèvre, Chamonix and Avoriaz. Four of them are marked as forecasts: Luz-Ardiden, Cauterets, Chamonix and Avoriaz. Les Angles (28 November, according to N’PY) joins the Pyrenean resorts, and Orelle is only a forecast according to skiinfo. The count therefore varies by source: read these dates resort by resort (guide-ski.fr).
Does the Tignes – Val d’Isère link open at the same time?
Guide-ski announces 28 November 2026 for the link between Tignes and Val d’Isère. The official Tignes page mentions this link without giving a date. Until one of the two ski areas confirms it, this date remains a third-party date (guide-ski.fr).
What is the 2026-2027 pass price?
No official price list for the 2026-2027 season had been published at the checking date of 18 October 2026. Prices found online date from earlier seasons or carry no year, and we do not repeat them. Check each ski area’s sales pages before you book.
What was the 2025-2026 season review?
The average occupancy rate of mountain resorts reached 73% in 2025-2026, against 71% a year earlier, and attendance rose by 2.5%. Winter school holidays fell to 81%, from 84%. These figures come from the ANMSM and Atout France, relayed by TourMaG on 10 April 2026 (TourMaG).
