The cheapest official entry on the day checked is self-guided, from $28.55 (€25) for the Book of Kells and Long Room. A guided tour pays off only if you want the story. Viator’s Book of Kells tours cost $82.21 to $192.98 per adult for two travelers, 25 October to 23 December 2026.

Verified on via the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability). The official Trinity prices come from its Book of Kells page, which has no update date.

If you search for Trinity College Dublin tickets, you are really asking whether the entry is enough or whether a guided tour is worth the extra money. We checked Trinity’s official pages and the Viator tours that include the library, then set the options side by side. If you want the manuscript and the Long Room, the official entry does the job for less.

One limit matters for any trip in 2027. Viator prices and availability cover only October 25 to December 23, 2026, so no 2027 price or date was checked. The Long Room closure is dated in the next section. For a guided option with library entry, start with the early-access tour. For the city without a library ticket, start with the Dublin walk.

Why Trinity College Dublin Is Worth Your Time

The draw is the Old Library: the Book of Kells, a medieval illuminated manuscript, and the Long Room, the library’s main hall. Entry is timed, so book a slot before you travel. The self-guided visit takes 45 to 60 minutes by our estimate, including the Long Room. AAA’s travel guide says the manuscript alone takes about 30 minutes. A short, focused visit is the real case for the ticket over a long tour.

The Long Room normally holds about 200,000 books. According to Smithsonian Magazine, most of them have been taken down since 2023, cleaned, tagged and moved to climate-controlled storage, and about 20,000 remain in the first four bays. That article is undated in our search results. It quotes a completion estimate of 2030 from the chief manuscript conservator, John Gillis.

The closure timeline, read before you book. Trinity’s FAQ on the Old Library campaign, last updated September 23, 2025, says the Old Library and the Long Room stay open until the end of 2027. Work starts at the end of 2027, with no end date and no reopening date. During the works, the Book of Kells is shown at the Printing House, according to the same FAQ. A visit in 2026 or early 2027 therefore sees the Long Room as it is today. Check Trinity’s FAQ and the official Book of Kells page again before you book a date in 2027, because both can change.

Trinity’s own prices are on a different basis. The table below lists the four options shown on its Book of Kells page on October 11, 2026. That page has no update date, so confirm before you go.

USD amounts use 1 EUR = 1.1419 USD, the rate Viator returned on October 11, 2026. The euro price is the official one.

A ticket buys the place, a tour buys the explanation. The official self-guided entry is the cheapest bookable way to stand in front of the Book of Kells and the Long Room, and the right choice if you already know the history. Trinity’s guided tour costs €65 (about $74.22) for 75 minutes and 16 people at most. Its cheapest official walk with entry is the Trinity Trails at €37 (about $42.25), covered below. That is about $8 less than the cheapest Viator tour with Book of Kells entry, at $82.21 per adult for 150 minutes. The official page gives no more detail, so the choice comes down to the extra 75 minutes and the castle exterior that the Viator tour adds. The most expensive option, at $192.98, is a full day with the Guinness Storehouse, a pint at Gravity Bar and a timed Book of Kells slot: a day out, with the library as one stop.

None of the eight Viator products is a plain Trinity entry ticket. Each one that includes the library also bundles a walk, a second site or both. Two walks, the Dublin Highlights walk and the private walk, pass the campus without library entry, so they suit a visitor who wants the city first.

Trinity also sells an official Trinity Trails walk with Book of Kells entry, for €37 (about $42.25). Third-party listings are different. A Tiqets listing for a student-guided Trinity Trails walk does not include Book of Kells or Old Library entry, and a Fever listing for a 45-minute student-guided tour, for ages 16 and up, is all sales final. Read the inclusions before you choose a third-party walk.

1. Dublin Highlights Walk That Ends at Trinity’s Gate

Rating 4.94 (7518 reviews) 2 hours From $27.40 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

Start here if your budget is tight and you want the city before the library. This two-hour walk leaves from Temple Bar, passes the Dublin Castle and Christ Church area, and ends at Trinity’s front gate. It has the most reviews in this list, more than seven thousand, and a rating of 4.94. At $27.40 per adult for two travelers it is the cheapest product here, but no admission is included, so the Book of Kells is a separate purchase. The guide is an accredited English-speaking local, according to the listing. Pick this walk for your first morning, when you want history, landmarks and a guide who knows the streets, and plan the library for the afternoon. Meet outside The Old Storehouse Pub, Crown Alley, Temple Bar, between Ha’Penny Bridge and Central Plaza. The walk does not start on campus.

  • Accredited English-speaking guide
  • Ends at Trinity’s front gate
  • No Book of Kells entry included

2. Early-Access Book of Kells Tour With a Castle Exterior

Rating 4.66 (4305 reviews) 2.5 hours From $82.21 per adult (2 travelers) Skip the line

This is the cheapest tour in this list that includes Book of Kells entry, and the one to pick if you want the manuscript and a guide without paying for a full day. The 150-minute tour includes entry to the College Treasury, where the manuscript is shown, a visit around the campus and an exterior tour of Dublin Castle. The Book of Kells 360 and Long Room experience is a presentation, not the original library, and the castle is visited from the outside only. The rating is 4.66, below the 4.7 cut-off we apply to the rest of this list. We keep it because it comes from more than four thousand reviews, so the sample is large, and because it is the lowest price with library entry. Meet at the Edmund Burke statue inside the college’s front entrance, and read the inclusions before you book.

  • Entry to the College Treasury, where the manuscript is shown
  • Exterior tour of Dublin Castle

3. Book of Kells and Old Library in a Small-Group History Tour

Rating 4.87 (147 reviews) 2.75 hours From $96.71 per adult (2 travelers) Small group, up to 20

This tour suits a visitor who wants two things: the Book of Kells and the Old Library, plus a walk through the history of the city. The group can be up to 20 people, per the listing, and the tour runs 165 minutes. Entry covers the College Treasury, where the manuscript is displayed, and the Old Library, with two short films. An exterior view of Dublin Castle and all fees and taxes are included. The rating is 4.87 from 147 reviews, a smaller sample than the big walks, so read the most recent reviews before you book. The supplier says the castle grounds are closed. We did not confirm that on the castle’s own site, so the status of the interior and grounds is to be verified before you travel. With up to 20 people, this group is larger than the 15-person tour in card 6. Meet at the Henry Gratton statue on College Green, opposite the main gates.

4. Trinity College Library Tour and Book of Kells

Rating 4.97 (101 reviews) 3.5 hours From $108.48 per adult (2 travelers) All sales final

This is the highest-rated tour with Book of Kells entry in our set, at 4.97 from 101 reviews. The price includes a bookshop ticket that covers the Book of Kells and the newer Book of Kells experience, and the walk ends on the Trinity campus. The listing is in Italian, and our notes also mention an English guide, so confirm the guide language on the booking page before you pay. The fine print matters more than usual. This is the only product in our set with no refund on cancellation, because all sales are final. Availability is narrower too: when we checked on October 11, 2026, only 34 of the 60 dates in our window had a bookable slot, so confirm your date before you plan the rest of the trip. The tour lasts 3.5 hours. With only 101 reviews, the rating is a smaller sample than the big walks. Meet at the Molly Malone statue on Suffolk Street.

5. Skip-the-Line Book of Kells, Cathedral and Castle Tour

Rating 4.74 (1582 reviews) 3.5 hours From $135.88 per adult (2 travelers) Skip the line

This is the tour for a first visit that wants Trinity, one of the city’s great churches and the castle in one afternoon. Skip-the-line entry covers the Old Library and St Patrick’s Cathedral, and the tour includes an exterior tour of Dublin Castle. The listing names the Book of Kells 360 and Long Room Reimagined experiences. They are presentations, not the manuscript in the College Treasury, so check the booking page if the manuscript matters to you. With more than fifteen hundred reviews, this is the third-largest sample in the list, and the 4.74 rating is steady across them. Guinness Storehouse is an optional upgrade, not part of the base price. Choose this tour if you want the cathedral and the library on one ticket. Meet at the Edmund Burke statue inside Trinity’s front entrance.

  • Skip-the-line Old Library and Long Room presentations

6. St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin Castle Exterior and Book of Kells Small-Group Tour

Rating 4.87 (177 reviews) 3.5 hours From $142.22 per adult (2 travelers) Small group, up to 15

Choose this tour if you want a small group of no more than 15 people and a broader sightseeing day. It gives fast-track entry to Trinity’s sights, adds St Patrick’s Cathedral and an exterior tour of Dublin Castle, and runs 210 minutes. The highlights mention fast-track entry to the Book of Kells, but the inclusions name only the Long Room visit, so confirm that the manuscript is on the itinerary before you book. The rating is 4.87 from 177 reviews, and all 60 dates in the window were open at our check. The listing says the castle’s interior and grounds are closed until December, per the supplier. We could not check that on the castle’s own site, so treat it as to be verified. At $142.22 per adult, this tour costs $6.34 more than the skip-the-line tour in card 5. The choice comes down to group size: this one is capped at 15 people, while card 5 does not state a limit. Meet at the Henry Gratton statue on College Green, opposite Trinity’s main east-facing gates.

  • Small group, maximum 15 people
  • Fast-track entry and Long Room visit
  • Castle interior not included; status to be verified

7. Private Walking Tour Past Trinity and Old Dublin

Rating 4.99 (790 reviews) 3 hours From $154.15 per adult (2 travelers) Private

The private walk suits a group that wants its own pace and its own guide. It has the highest rating in this list, 4.99 from 790 reviews. The three-hour walk takes in Trinity College on its route, but no admission tickets are included, so the Book of Kells is a separate purchase if you want the library. That makes it a city walk with a campus stop rather than a library visit. The guide is available in English or Italian, per the listing, and umbrellas and local tips are included. Prices are per adult for two travelers, so check the booking page for a different party size. The meeting point is 8 Cecilia Street, according to the supplier’s map pin. Choose this walk if you want the city with a private guide and you are happy to visit the library on another day.

8. Full-Day Dublin Highlights With Guinness and Book of Kells

Rating 4.72 (114 reviews) 5.5 hours From $192.98 per adult (2 travelers) Free cancellation

This is the longest and most expensive option, at 330 minutes and $192.98 per adult for two travelers. Choose it only if you want a full day with a broad itinerary. It combines skip-the-line entry to the Guinness Storehouse and St Patrick’s Cathedral, timed entry to the Book of Kells and the Old Library, and a pint at Gravity Bar. Trinity is one of several stops rather than the centerpiece, so the library gets a timed slot inside a longer day. Book that slot first and plan the rest of the day around it. The rating is 4.72 from 114 reviews. Meet at the fountain in St Patrick’s Garden on Bull Alley Street. Before you pay, ask whether the Guinness Storehouse is part of the reason you are coming. If it is not, the shorter tours above give you the library for much less.

  • Skip-the-line Guinness Storehouse and cathedral entry
  • Timed Book of Kells and Old Library entry
  • Pint of Guinness at Gravity Bar

Practical Tips for the Visit

Opening hours. The official Book of Kells page, which has no update date, lists Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Other websites show different hours, and we did not use them. Check the official page on the day of your visit.

Timed entry and time to plan. Book of Kells entry is timed, and a reservation is suggested. AAA’s TripCanvas guide warns that a visitor without one can be refused when the slots are sold out. AAA estimates about 30 minutes for the manuscript. Our estimate for the self-guided visit with the Long Room is 45 to 60 minutes, plus the walk to campus. The Viator tours last 120 to 330 minutes, so each one replaces a half day or a full day.

Arrive early. Several Viator listings ask you to arrive 15 minutes before the start time. Keep the confirmation, because the skip-the-line and early-access products depend on your timed entry.

Cancellation. According to the listings, the other seven products allow a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. The Library Tour and Book of Kells (card 4) is all sales final. Confirm the cut-off on the booking page before you pay.

Budget for two adults

  • Official self-guided entry: about $57.10 for two adults (2 × €25, at 1 EUR = 1.1419 USD).
  • Dublin Highlights walk, no entry (card 1): $54.80 for two adults.
  • Early-access Book of Kells tour (card 2): $164.42 for two adults.
  • Full-day tour with Guinness and Book of Kells (card 8): $385.96 for two adults.

Our arithmetic on per-adult prices checked October 11, 2026, for October 25 to December 23, 2026.

Which option for which visitor. With one morning, combine the Dublin Highlights walk with the official self-guided entry. For the manuscript and a guide, the small-group tour balances price, rating and library entry. For the cathedral and the castle on one day, the skip-the-line tour covers both. If you want no library at all, the private walk is the choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Book of Kells worth paying for on its own?

Yes, if the manuscript is the reason for your visit. AAA’s TripCanvas guide says it is worth the visit alone. AAA estimates about 30 minutes for the manuscript; our estimate with the Long Room is 45 to 60 minutes. The official self-guided ticket, from $28.55 (€25), is the cheapest entry you can book on the day checked; the $21.70 (€19) time slot was sold out. A guided tour pays off only if you want the story, the campus or the city on the same day.

Can I buy a plain Trinity ticket on Viator?

Not in the set we checked. None of the eight Viator products is a plain entry ticket. Each product that includes the Book of Kells also includes a guided walk, a second site, or both. For the library alone, buy from Trinity’s official site. Entry to the Book of Kells is timed, so choose a slot before you travel, and keep your confirmation with you when you arrive.

Will the Long Room be open in 2027?

Trinity’s FAQ on the Old Library campaign, last updated September 23, 2025, says the Old Library and the Long Room stay open until the end of 2027. The works start at the end of 2027, with no end date and no reopening date, as explained in the section above. A trip before the end of 2027 falls inside that window. For a visit after that, check the FAQ before you book, because the plans can change.

Are the Viator prices the same as the official ticket prices?

No. The official prices are in euros, from Trinity’s Book of Kells page, read on October 11, 2026. The Viator prices are per adult for two travelers, for October 25 to December 23, 2026, from the Viator partner API on the same date. The official guided tour also has a guide; Viator tours cost more because they run 150 to 330 minutes and add a walk, a second site or both. Compare the basis of each price before you decide, and check the live price on the booking page.

Can I go inside Dublin Castle on these tours?

On the tours in this list, the castle is seen from outside only. Two suppliers describe the interior and the grounds as closed, one of them until December. We did not confirm that on the castle’s own site, so treat the interior status as to be verified before you travel. Do not choose a tour for its castle interior until that status is confirmed.

Which tour gives the best value for money?

For a visitor who wants the library and a guide, the small-group tour at $96.71 per adult has a 4.87 rating from 147 reviews, and all 60 dates were open at our check. The early-access tour is cheaper at $82.21, but its rating is 4.66. The library tour scores 4.97, but it is all sales final, and only 34 of 60 dates were open.
