The Vilnius Christmas Market 2026 runs for 30 days, from 28 November to 27 December 2026, on Cathedral Square, and the tree is lit on Saturday 28 November. Entry is free. No official lighting time has been published yet, so check with Go Vilnius before you go.
Checked on against the official sources cited (Go Vilnius, kaledossostineje.lt).
Cathedral Square in Vilnius hosts the Lithuanian capital’s Christmas market for a full month. This year the season opens with the tree lighting on Saturday 28 November 2026. This guide separates what the official sources confirm (dates, hours, access) from what still needs checking: the lighting time, the ride prices, the winter flights. Budget figures are estimates, sourced one by one.
Dates and location: Cathedral Square and the 28 November lighting

Cathedral Square, in the Old Town
The market sets up on Cathedral Square, at the foot of the bell tower, in Vilnius’ Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 17 December 1994. Go Vilnius announces an opening from 28 November to 27 December 2026; the tree and the carousel stay in place until 6 January 2027. Go Vilnius 2026 programme.
Highlights
- Tree lighting on Saturday 28 November 2026, Cathedral Square, according to the Go Vilnius announcement of 6 August 2026, confirmed by LRT on 16 October.
- Market open every day, including 24, 25 and 26 December, with adjusted hours.

What the market looks like
The market is made of wooden chalets set around the large tree on Cathedral Square. Secondary sources count 48 chalets for the 2025 edition (marches-de-noel.fr, fullsuitcase.com); the number for 2026 is not published in any official source we checked. Travel blogs describe a compact market: you can walk through it in an hour or two, so it works as a stop rather than a day out on its own.
Visitors describe the following in blogs: crafts (Baltic amber, wooden objects, wool), cakes such as šakotis, the spit cake that Go Vilnius mentions, mulled wine, sausages, smoked cheeses, cottage cheese fritters (varškės spurgos) and kisielius, a thickened cranberry drink. We have not checked, one by one, whether each of these products is on the 2026 chalets.
The weak point most often reported is the cold. Pack warm layers, non-slip boots and gloves, especially for evenings on the square. These impressions come from blogs, not a survey: we found no usable Reddit or TripAdvisor reviews.
Best time to visit: on weekdays and during the day, the crowds are smaller. Weekends and the night of the lighting are the busiest. This is advice from blogs, not measured: we found no attendance statistics.
What are the opening hours of the Vilnius Christmas Market?
The 2026 hours are published day by day by the Vilnius Cultural Centre. The market opens at 12 pm from Monday to Saturday and at 11 am on Sunday. On 24 December it opens at 11 am and closes at 5 pm; on 25 and 26 December, it runs from 12 pm to 9 pm.
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday to Wednesday | 12 pm to 8 pm |
| Thursday | 12 pm to 9 pm |
| Friday and Saturday | 12 pm to 10 pm |
| Sunday | 11 am to 8 pm |
| 24 December | 11 am to 5 pm |
| 25 and 26 December | 12 pm to 9 pm |
Source: kaledossostineje.lt, Christmas Town programme, checked on 7 November 2026. Caveat: the programme gives the days in Roman numerals (I to VII); our reading of how they match Monday to Sunday is an interpretation, so confirm it on the page before you go.
The ice rink, set up on Town Hall Square from 29 November 2026 to 25 January 2027, has its own hours: 10 am to 10 pm Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, and 10 am to 11:15 pm on Friday and Saturday, according to marches-de-noel.fr (secondary source).
Ice rink, carousel and rides: what’s free and what isn’t

Ice rink and carousel around the tree
The ice rink sits on Town Hall Square from 29 November 2026 to 25 January 2027, according to Go Vilnius. The carousel stays near the tree on Cathedral Square until 6 January 2027. A Christmas train runs until early January 2027, but the announcements don’t give the same exact end date (3 or 6 January 2027), so check the day before you plan a ride.
Highlights
- Market entry is free, with no ticket needed, so you can wander at your own pace.
- Ice rink on Town Hall Square, separate from the market on Cathedral Square.
- Carousel and tree visible until 6 January 2027.

How to get to Vilnius and into the city centre
Vilnius has direct flights from several European cities, including London, but the winter 2026-2027 timetables are not all published yet. The table below lists what we checked, with the status of each piece of information: a row marked « aggregator » has not been confirmed with the airline.
| From | Mode | Duration | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| London (Stansted, Luton) | direct Ryanair and Wizz Air flights | not checked | aggregator |
| Paris-CDG | direct Air Baltic flight (Air France codeshare) | about 2 hours 35 minutes | aggregator, winter not confirmed |
| Paris-Beauvais | direct Ryanair flight | not checked | timetable published until 20 October 2026 |
| Brussels Airport | direct Brussels Airlines flight | about 2 hours 20 minutes | contradictory frequency |
| Warsaw | LuxExpress or FlixBus coach | about 7 to 9 hours 15 minutes | aggregator, no official 2026 timetable |
| Riga | LTG Link train (once a day) | about 4 hours | timetable not dated |
| Vilnius Airport (VNO) to the centre | bus 88; train to the central station | about 20 minutes by bus; about 7 minutes by train | secondary sources, to be confirmed |
Sources: flight aggregators, LTG Link and judu.lt (secondary sources), checked on 7 November 2026. Check each timetable with the airline before you buy.
From the airport to the centre
Vilnius Airport (VNO) connects to the centre by bus 88, which also runs at night as 88N. The sources we checked, all secondary, give about 20 minutes’ journey time. The train to the central station takes about 7 minutes and costs €0.70 to €0.80. Bus 1 is often cited for the airport, but secondary sources say it serves the bus and rail stations, not the city centre: don’t take it to reach the centre.
From Poland or Latvia
From Warsaw, the coach takes 7 to 9 hours 15 minutes according to aggregators, with no official 2026 timetable published. From Riga, the LTG Link train runs only once a day, in about 4 hours, with an undated timetable. For a short weekend, flying from the UK is still the simplest option.
Budget: documented costs and estimates
Entry to the market is free. The amounts below are not verified prices for December 2026: each one carries its source and status.
- Market entry: free (Lithuania Travel; marches-de-noel.fr, secondary source).
- Rides, mini train and ice rink: paid, 2026 prices not checked.
- Return flight, Paris to Vilnius (example): about €80 to €200 return, depending on how early you book and on the airline. Aggregator estimate, not verified for December 2026.
- Bus Warsaw-Vilnius: $21 to $55, aggregated prices, not verified for 2026.
- Airport train to the central station: about €0.70 to €0.80, according to two secondary sources.
- Mulled wine: €5 to €8 according to blogs, 2026 price not verified. The €8 price cited by LRT dates from 2022.
- Tip: €1 to €2, according to an LRT article from January 2026.
- Cash withdrawal and exchange: limit of €750 to €2,000 per transaction depending on the bank, and exchange fees of 1% to 3% depending on the card issuer. Figures from an exchange-rate site, not verified.
Not priced, for lack of a dated source: accommodation, eating out away from the market, and the bus 88 fare from the airport.
A weekend in Vilnius around the lighting
Friday 27 November: arrive early in the afternoon if you can. The market opens at 12 pm and stays open until 10 pm on Friday, which leaves a long window to explore the Old Town and the cathedral before heading to the square for the evening.
Saturday 28 November: the market is open from midday. Check the Go Vilnius programme the day before the lighting, as the time is not official. If you book the walking tour above, it runs on Saturdays, including 28 November, in English.
Sunday 29 November: the market opens at 11 am, an hour earlier than from Monday to Saturday. The ice rink on Town Hall Square also opens that day, at 10 am, for families and skaters.
Weather: in December, snowfall averages about 22 cm, according to EaseWeather (secondary source). Average December temperatures sit between -4°C and 0°C in the sources we checked. Pack warm layers, non-slip boots and gloves, especially for evenings on the square.
To plan your own trip around the market, Pixi, Pixidia’s trip planner, can help you organise it. To compare with another market, see the guide to the Lille Christmas market or the one for Leipzig.
Depending on your travel style
- Families: the carousel and the mini train are often cited by blogs as fun for children. Entry to the market is free, so you can spend an hour there without a fixed budget. Expect to pay for the rides separately.
- Budget travellers: entry to the market is free. The costs to budget for are the flight or bus from your departure city, then the rides, whose 2026 prices we haven’t checked. Tipping is modest: €1 to €2 according to LRT.
- First-time visitors: start at Cathedral Square, then the Old Town, and go back to the market once it’s dark for the lights, which blogs say are worth seeing.
- Reduced mobility: no reliable source has confirmed step-free access to the cathedral. One specialist site describes the square as flat and paved, which you should check on arrival.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trusting a lighting time from a blog. No time is official as of our check; the only confirmed date is 28 November.
- Taking bus 1 from the airport to the centre. Secondary sources say it serves the station, not the city centre; bus 88 is the option cited.
- Assuming everything closes on the 24th and 25th. The market opens on 24, 25 and 26 December, with shorter hours on the 24th.
- Confusing free entry with free attractions. The rides and the ice rink are paid, and their 2026 prices have not been checked.
What other guides don’t tell you
Six points are missing from, or badly reported in, the guides we checked. Each one points to its source: the Vilnius Cultural Centre, the city hall as relayed by LRT, or a secondary source flagged as such.
- Opening hours change day by day. The official programme gives 12 pm to 8 pm from Monday to Wednesday, 12 pm to 9 pm on Thursday, 12 pm to 10 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11 am to 8 pm on Sunday. A single hours range for every day doesn’t match that schedule. kaledossostineje.lt (checked 7 November 2026).
- The market stays open on 24, 25 and 26 December. On the 24th it closes at 5 pm; on the 25th and 26th it runs from 12 pm to 9 pm. Many guides imply a full closure: that’s wrong for the market, though right for many shops. kaledossostineje.lt (checked 7 November 2026).
- The tree’s cost has a recorded history. €119,800 in 2026, against a record of €231,000 in 2022, according to LRT citing the city hall. The guides we checked give no figure at all. LRT (checked 7 November 2026).
- Free entry, paid attractions. According to Lithuania Travel and marches-de-noel.fr (secondary source), visiting the market costs nothing, while the rides and the ice rink are paid. The two are often confused. Lithuania Travel (checked 7 November 2026).
- The direct Vilnius-London City link has stopped. The last LOT flight on this route ran on 27 March 2026, according to LRT (12 January 2026). Some transport guides still list it. Source: LRT, checked 7 November 2026, with no link to a 2026 timetable.
- ETIAS has no official launch date. Guides still announce a Q4 2026 launch; secondary sources from July and October 2026 say that date is no longer held. The official European Commission page we checked returned no usable content, so the official site has not confirmed the change.
Entry formalities and safety for British travellers
For a short stay in the Schengen area, British passport holders don’t need a visa: up to 90 days in any 180-day period, according to the GOV.UK entry requirements for Lithuania. Time spent in other Schengen countries in the previous 180 days counts toward those 90 days. GOV.UK, Lithuania entry requirements.
Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival, and must expire at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Declare cash or travellers’ cheques worth €10,000 or more: if you don’t, your money can be seized when you leave.
ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation that will apply to British visitors once it starts, has no confirmed launch date. The most recent press reports point to 2027, so check the official EU travel site before you book. Meanwhile, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is being rolled out across the Schengen area and registers travellers biometrically at the border.
The GOV.UK travel advice for Lithuania (updated 11 August 2026, still current on 7 November 2026) says petty crime is common: watch your belongings in busy places and on public transport. It also warns of drink spiking in Vilnius, so don’t leave your drinks unattended. At a large year-end gathering, stay alert with your things, as in any busy market. Does Riga have a Christmas market too?
Yes, according to the sources consulted, but Riga’s 2026 dates have not been verified. Check with Riga’s tourist office before planning a visit, and don’t take dates from a guide that gives no check date.
