The best season for a thermal spa break in Spain is autumn. In October, Ourense averages 15.6 °C, against a peak of 42.6 °C in July 2026, and paid circuits cost between €5 and €31 a visit (Archena: €23 on weekdays). Heads-up: since 1 October, Ourense’s free baths have been closing in stages. Go for a paid circuit, which stays open all year, and book early for the long weekends.

Sinking into 40 °C water when the air is just as hot makes no sense at all. Summer 2026 was the hottest ever recorded in Ourense, the thermal capital of Galicia. In October the equation flips: the air cools, the water steams, prices drop and tables fill up with chestnuts and mushrooms. Here is where to go, what it costs, what is open as of 1 October 2026 and what you should think twice about promising your travel companions.

1. Why autumn changes everything

The first argument is physical. The pleasure of a hot bath comes from the gap between the water and the air. In Ourense, the AEMET (Spain’s state weather agency) averages give 15.6 °C in October (21.7 °C high, 9.6 °C low, 138 hours of sunshine) and 11.1 °C in November, against 22.5 °C on average in July. Summer 2026 blew those benchmarks away: a summer average of 25.0 °C, a peak of 42.6 °C on 4 July and 45 days above 35 °C, according to La Región. Ourense’s official tourism guide confirms that the free thermal baths are nicer with the contrast of the cooler seasons.

The second is about money and logistics. The official guide advises avoiding August and public holidays, and weekday mornings are the quietest. At Archena, spa entry drops from €31 at the weekend to €23 on weekdays in low season, an €8 gap for the same pool. A hotel operator also points out that thermal circuit slots go before the rooms do: book six weeks to three months ahead for long weekends.

The third is the calendar. Chestnuts in Galicia around 1 to 11 November (the Magosto festival), the Catalan Castanyada on 31 October and 1 November, mushroom season in Soria, vineyards turning colour in the Ribeira Sacra. And a fourth, more nuanced one: AEMET forecasts a warmer-than-normal autumn, with possibly above-average rainfall in the north-west. In Galicia, pack a waterproof and a plan B under cover. In the south-east, autumn stays mild.

Good to know before you go: every price in this article was checked in early October 2026 on official websites where they exist. Double-check them before booking, especially for long weekends. And remember the simple rule of autumn: paid = reliable, free = check on the day.

2. Galicia: Ourense, the city of hot springs

Ourense, Mondariz and La Toja

€0 to €7 in Ourense, €30 at Mondariz 1 to 2 days 15.6 °C in October October and November

Ourense claims more natural hot springs than any other Spanish city, along the Miño river, on a thermal walkway linking the sites. The status of the public baths changed on 1 October, according to the city council’s official page (updated 30 September 2026): A Chavasqueira (free pools) and Burga de Canedo stay open from 10 am to 7 pm, Muíño da Veiga closes until spring, and the free section of Outariz as well as the As Burgas pool are closed. The reopening of As Burgas, closed since 2020, has been announced as paid (€7) with no date. The paid stations, on the other hand, are open: Outariz at €6.95 (closed on Tuesdays) and A Chavasqueira at €5.40 (closed on Mondays), with rotenburos at 41 °C and ofuros at 39 °C.

A new management contract approved on 27 August 2026 provides for Outariz and Burga de Canedo to open all year, and A Chavasqueira and Muíño da Veiga from April to October, according to La Región. In other words: in November, count on the paid circuits. And remember that the free riverside baths depend on the Miño flooding.

Highlights

  • Prexigueiro (Ribadavia): six hot pools from 36 to 40 °C in the heart of the Ribeiro vineyards, €6.65, no booking possible (first come, first served), closed on Mondays.
  • Mondariz, Palacio del Agua: more than 3,000 m², €30 for 2 hours, booking compulsory, mostly open late in the day on weekdays.
  • La Toja: the Gran Hotel’s thermal club at €40 for non-guests (€25 for guests), by phone booking and subject to availability.
Pixidia tip: check the day’s status on the council’s « Estado actual de las termas » page before you set off. Bring swimwear, a towel, flip-flops and a padlock: there is no rental at the free baths. Get out of the water every 10 to 15 minutes and don’t stay in more than 2 hours at a stretch.
Ribeira Sacra by boat (optional), visit to Ourense from Santiago from €55 per adult (based on 2 adults), about a 10-hour day · ★ 4.3 (27 reviews)

3. The south and south-east: Archena, Granada and the « Arab baths »

Archena, Lanjarón, Alhama de Granada, Granada

When Galicia’s autumn turns rainy, Murcia is the safe bet. The Balneario de Archena, in the Ricote valley, covers more than 200,000 m² and stays open all year. According to its official 2026 price list, the spa with thermal pools costs €23 on weekdays and €31 at weekends, on public holidays and on long weekends in low season (7 September to 8 October, 13 to 30 October, then 2 November to 4 December). The Hispanidad long weekend (9 to 12 October) and 31 October to 1 November count as high season. The 2-hour Balnea circuit costs €30 on weekdays and €40 at weekends. A 15% discount applies if you book more than 45 days ahead.

In Andalusia, the village of Lanjarón leans on the Sierra Nevada: the Aquatherma circuit at Relais Termal costs €33.50 (booking compulsory, swim cap compulsory), 45 minutes by bus from Granada. The springs there are cold; it is the pools that are heated. For genuine natural pools, head to Alhama de Granada, about 58 km from Granada: free outdoor pools along the río Alhama, between 40 and 47 °C depending on the spring, according to the local press.

4. Mountains, the north and Catalonia: four getaways

Panticosa, Alhama de Aragón, Cantabria and Caldes de Montbui

€30 to €40 a circuit 1 to 2 days 20 to 38 °C depending on the pool October, November

Panticosa (Aragonese Pyrenees). At 1,636 m, in a glacial cirque, the Termas de Tiberio offer a 75-minute circuit from €39 (pools from 20 to 34 °C, slot booking compulsory, from age 3), according to the resort’s website. It lists a season from 1 May to 30 November 2026, but Tiberio’s actual opening in November is not confirmed: call +34 974 487 161 before booking a late stay. The Gran Hotel, for its part, says it is open all year. In the mountains, snow can cut the road from November.

Alhama de Aragón (Zaragoza). The Balneario Termas Pallarés has a thermal lake of almost 2 hectares, kept at 28 to 29 °C and open for swimming all year. The 50-minute Aquatherma circuit costs €38 (booking at reception, swim cap compulsory), according to Relais Termal. Allow about 115 km from Zaragoza and 200 km from Madrid.

Cantabria. The Balneario de La Hermida, in the Liébana gorge at the foot of the Picos de Europa, is home to the Cueva Termal, a cave-shaped outdoor pool at 38 °C: from €30 for 90 minutes, according to the spa. It’s the one for rainy days: hot water under a fine drizzle, facing the cliffs.

Caldes de Montbui (Catalonia). About 45 minutes from Barcelona by bus, the Font del Lleó gushes out at 74 °C, one of the hottest waters in Europe, in a Roman spa town. The Hotel Broquetas offers non-guests two thermal water treatments in 45 minutes for €40, according to its official website. The Castanyada on 31 October and 1 November sets a foodie tone.

Highlights

  • Four regions, four moods: altitude, a hot lake, a thermal cave and a Roman town.
  • Panticosa, Mondariz and Fuente Podrida are mostly reached by car: plan on hiring one.
  • From Madrid, high-speed trains change the game: read our take on the AVE in 2026.
Pixidia tip: at Panticosa, if you plan to stay in November, ask in writing for confirmation that the circuit is open and for the postponement policy if snow cuts the road. The spa says it offers a postponement or refund if access is closed by the authorities.

6. Wine, mushrooms and chestnuts: what really happens in October 2026

One word of caution: don’t count on picking grapes in October 2026. The 2026 harvests are exceptionally early: the Ribeira Sacra picked from 12 August to 26 September (5,446,859 kg, up 17.9% on 2025), more than 80% of the O Ribeiro grapes were in by 12 September, and Utiel-Requena started its whites as early as 10 August, according to Noticias Galicia and COPE. In a normal year, the Galician harvest runs into October. This year, October is the month of cellars, tastings and vines turning red and gold.

The combo still works. Ourense and the Ribeira Sacra pair up with a morning of baths, a winery in the afternoon and an empanada in the evening. From Valencia, Fuente Podrida (Balneario del Cabriel, in Requena) offers a historic sulphur circuit, in the Utiel-Requena DO region: 2026 prices are still to be confirmed with the establishment, on +34 962 335 122. On the forest side, Soria is setting up a mycological park from October to November, with a recreational permit of €10 for two days and a 5 kg limit per day. Only pick what you can identify with certainty.

7. Long weekends, bookings and budget

Three dates to remember: the weekend of 10 to 12 October (Monday 12 October, Fiesta Nacional), Sunday 1 November (Todos los Santos, with regional variations) and the December long weekend from 5 to 8, the longest and the first to fill up. For the November long weekend, we have detailed who gets the extra day off and who doesn’t. At Archena, the 9 to 11 October and 5 to 7 December long weekends switch to weekend prices.

For British travellers, the calendar works a little differently: there is no UK bank holiday between the August one and Christmas, so October half-term is the big window. It typically runs 26 to 30 October in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (12 to 16 October in Scotland), but councils and schools vary, so check your local dates. By Archena’s 2026 grid, 13 to 30 October is low season, so a weekday visit that week should be at the €23 rate, while the weekend of 31 October to 1 November jumps to high season. For Galicia, Santiago de Compostela is the easiest gateway: Ryanair flies there from London Stansted and Vueling from Gatwick, but winter timetables change, so check before you book. For Archena, fly into Murcia or Alicante and continue by Renfe train or car.

  • No booking needed: Outariz, A Chavasqueira, Prexigueiro (where it’s not even possible).
  • Booking compulsory: Mondariz, Lanjarón, Alhama de Aragón, Panticosa, La Toja (by phone).
  • Cancellation: Lanjarón charges the full amount within 24 hours; Archena asks for 48 hours’ notice.
  • Health: if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor before hot baths. Carry your UK GHIC and take out travel insurance too: the GHIC covers state healthcare in Spain, not cancellations or repatriation.

What is the best season for thermal baths in Spain?

Autumn, in October and November: cool air makes the contrast with the hot water more enjoyable, prices and crowds drop on weekdays, and seasonal food fits the mood. Summer 2026 reached 42.6 °C in Ourense, according to La Región. The only downside: Galicia’s free baths partly close.

Are the hot springs in Ourense free?

Partly. As of 30 September 2026, A Chavasqueira (free section) and Burga de Canedo stay open from 10 am to 7 pm, Muíño da Veiga closes until spring, and the free section of Outariz and the As Burgas pool are closed. The paid stations at Outariz (€6.95) and Chavasqueira (€5.40) are open, according to the Ourense city council.

How much does a thermal circuit cost at Archena?

The spa with thermal pools costs €23 on weekdays and €31 at weekends, on public holidays and on long weekends in low season. The 2-hour Balnea circuit costs €30 on weekdays and €40 at weekends, according to the official 2026 price list.

Do you need to book a thermal circuit?

Yes for Mondariz, Lanjarón, Alhama de Aragón, Panticosa and La Toja. No for Outariz and A Chavasqueira. At Prexigueiro, booking is not possible: it’s first come, first served, according to La Región. For long weekends, book six weeks to three months ahead.

Can you pick grapes in Spain in October 2026?

Probably not: 2026 is an exceptionally early year. The Ribeira Sacra harvest ended on 26 September, according to Noticias Galicia. October is still ideal for visiting wineries and tasting.

Can you bathe in the Arab baths of Ronda or the Caliphal baths in Córdoba?

No, they are monuments you visit, not places to swim, according to Turismo de Ronda. To bathe, choose the hammams of Granada or Córdoba, or the natural pools of Alhama de Granada.

What should you take to a Spanish spa?

Swimwear, a towel, flip-flops, a padlock for the lockers, and a swim cap at several venues (Archena, Lanjarón, Alhama de Aragón). There is no rental at Ourense’s free baths, says La Región.
