Private beats a group only for the early start and the flexibility; if you just want the interiors on a budget, a small group is enough. The castle’s historic buildings open at 9 am and the only private tour with tickets included starts at 8:30 am: €280 for 2 adults, €340 for 4. A small group with tickets costs €47 to €53 per adult. All 11 tours in my selection offer an English-speaking guide, so language is not the deciding factor for you. I would book the private tour from 3 or 4 people or for the 8:30 am start, and the 9 am small group otherwise.
Torn between an early-morning private guide and a standard group ticket for Prague Castle? I compared 11 tours rated 4.7/5 or higher, with Viator prices checked over the window from 12 October to 11 November 2026. The answer is more nuanced than « private is a luxury » or « group tours are tourist factories ».
It comes down to four variables, in this order: the guide’s language, the number of travelers, the departure time, and whether interior tickets are in the price. The price per person comes after, because it depends on the other three. In my selection, all 11 tours offer an English-speaking guide, so for English speakers the real choice is about group size, start time and tickets. Only 4 of them also offer a French-speaking guide: the three private tours and one group tour.
The bottom line: a private tour is never cheaper than a small English-language group with tickets, even for four people (€85 per person against €47 to €53). It wins on start time and flexibility. My pick for the morning is the 3-hour private walk with tickets included, which starts as early as 8:30 am. If you do not need a private guide, the 9 am small group remains the best value. And for the district at the foot of the castle, I have already covered 10 things to do in Malá Strana.
Why compare private and group tours at Prague Castle: the Pixidia angle

What « early » means here
The grounds of Prague Castle [Q193369], with its courtyards and gardens, are free to enter every day from 6 am to 10 pm. The ticketed historic buildings open at 9 am and close at 5 pm from April to October, and at 4 pm from November to March [Prague Peek, View from Prague]. A 5 am start therefore gives you the courtyards and the view at sunrise, not the inside of St. Vitus Cathedral [Q5949]. To get in right at opening, the useful slot is 8:30 am for the private tour with tickets, 9 am for the small group.
Guides agree on a peak in visitor numbers between 10 am and 2 pm, fed by excursion buses [HelloPrague, Real Prague Guides]. These are editorial estimates, not headcounts. Most standard groups leave at 10 am, at the start of that peak: it is a matter of time slot, not a flaw in the products.
Tickets: what is included, what is not
The basic ticket covers St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George’s Basilica and the Golden Lane [Q1535529] with Daliborka Tower. According to one product listing, the South Tower of St. Vitus, the Lobkowicz Palace, extra exhibitions and the audio guide are excluded. Only three products on my list build these tickets into their price: the 8:30 am private tour and the two small groups. For the others, several 2026 sources describe a single ticket at around €18 [The Better Vacation], but other sites still quote the old system of circuits A, B and C. Check the price on the official hrad.cz site before setting your budget.
Which profile, which tour
| Your profile | My pick | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, wants a private guide | Private 8:30 am tour | €220 for 1 adult, tickets included; the small group with tickets (tour no. 4) costs €53 and starts at 9 am |
| Couple | Private 8:30 am tour or small group | €140 per person with tickets in a private tour, or €53 per person in a small group with tickets |
| Family or group of 4 | Private 8:30 am tour | €340 for 4, i.e. €85 per person, tickets included |
| Tight budget, wants to go inside | 9 am small group or €47 small group | €53 or €47 per adult, tickets included |
| Understand the castle without going in | Walking tour or castle and Old Town | €18 or €40 per adult, exteriors only |
| Refuses to get up early | 2 pm departure or night tour | After the morning peak, or in the evening without the buses |
| Photographer, sunrise | Private tour from 5 am | Exteriors only, buildings closed |
| Only one day in Prague | Private full-day walk | Both banks, the castle as a single segment |
One important point, to stay honest: a private tour is not cheaper than a small group, even for four people. It mainly makes sense for travelers who want a guide in another language than English, since the small groups with tickets are English-only.
The 11 Prague Castle tours I compare
I sorted them by format: private tours (1 to 3), small groups with tickets (4 and 5), groups without tickets (6 to 9), then two formats apart (10 and 11). Prices are in euros for 2 adults (2-person rate), checked from 12 October to 11 November 2026. The guide’s language appears on each listing.

1. Private 3-hour castle walk, tickets included
This is the only private tour in my selection built around the castle itself, with the interior tickets already in the price. You meet as early as 8:30 am in front of the Archbishop’s Palace, half an hour before the historic buildings open, and the guide can lead the tour in English (or in French, German and other languages). The price is shared: €140 per person for two, €85 for four.
- Private guide, English available
- Castle interior tickets included
- Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure

2. Private 3-hour tour, starting as early as 5 am
Here the castle is just one stop on a walk linking Malá Strana, the Old Town and Charles Bridge. I include it for the start time: from 5 am, the castle courtyards are open to the public but the buildings are closed, so this is an outdoor outing built around light and views. Interior tickets are not listed as included.
- Private guide, English available
- Start time of your choice
- Chauffeur-driven car optional

3. Private full-day walk: the best of Prague
If you only have one day in Prague, this private walking tour covers both banks: the castle, Malá Strana, the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter. The castle is only one section of it, so it is not the equivalent of a private tour centred on the monument. Entry tickets are not included and are paid by card on site.
- Licensed local guide, English available
- Starts as early as 8 am
- Restaurant tips and photo spots

4. Small group of 12 maximum, interiors included
This is my direct benchmark against the private tour: same monuments, tickets included, for €53 per adult against €140 per person for a private tour for two. The 9 am start puts your entry into the buildings right at opening time. The only trade-off is that the guide speaks English only, which matters little if English is your language.
- Main interior circuit ticket included
- Group of 12 people maximum
- Meeting point at Schwarzenberg Palace, look for the red umbrella

5. Small group with tickets, the cheapest
This is the cheapest format with tickets included: €47 per adult. In exchange, the 10 am departure falls at the start of the busiest window, and the 1:30 pm one finishes right at the 4 pm closing time from November. Book it if budget matters more than a quiet start.
- Entries included: St. Vitus, Old Royal Palace, St. George’s Basilica, Golden Lane
- Meet at the Masaryk statue, pink umbrella
- Departures at 10 am and 1:30 pm

6. Walking tour without tickets, the most affordable
This is the cheapest standard group ticket: €18 per adult to walk the four courtyards, the gardens and the outside of St. Vitus. Interior entries are not included. If you add them, at around €18 according to several sources that you should check on the official site, the total still comes in under a small group with tickets. Departures at 11 am and 3 pm, so it suits the outdoor sights best.
- Licensed local guide
- Four courtyards, gardens and the exterior of St. Vitus
- Meet at the Malostranská metro exit

7. From the castle to the Old Town, 10 people maximum
For anyone who does not want to give the whole morning to one monument: you walk up to the castle, take it in, then head down to Charles Bridge and the Old Town in three hours. The group never exceeds 10 people. No paid entry is included, and there is a single departure at 10 am.
- Licensed historian guide
- Group of 10 people maximum
- Meet at Jan Palach Square, in front of the Rudolfinum

8. The budget group tour with the most language options
This is the group walk in my selection with the widest choice of guide languages. The catch: it starts at 9:50 am in the Old Town, so the castle only comes after Charles Bridge, and interior entries are not included. A ticket-inclusive equivalent exists, rated 4.59/5 over 1,364 reviews, that I do not link because it falls below my 4.7 threshold.
- Live licensed guide, English available
- Tram ticket included
- Old Town, Charles Bridge, then the castle

9. Afternoon walk, 2 pm departure
My plan B if you refuse to get up early: the 2 pm departure falls after the morning peak. It is an exterior tour, with no interior entry. With 2,434 reviews, it is also the most proven product on the list.
- Professional licensed guide
- Meet on Old Town Square, facing the Old Town Hall
- Castle, St. Vitus and Charles Bridge seen from the outside

10. Castle and Charles Bridge: €3 booking fee, then tips
The model is unusual: you only pay the booking fee (€3.12 per person), then tip the guide at the end. Interiors are an option at €18 according to the supplier. It suits a tight budget, as long as you accept a 10 am group, which is when the crowds build.
- Local guide
- Interior option for an extra fee
- Meet at Jan Palach Square, in front of the Rudolfinum

11. The castle at night: alchemy and mysteries
This format stands apart from the comparison: the castle in the evening, without the tour buses, built around Rudolf II, alchemy, the Golem and the Codex Gigas. Exteriors only. It does not run every day, with 17 days open out of 31 from 12 October to 11 November, so check your dates before locking in the rest of your stay.
- Small group, guide in English or German
- Rudolf II, alchemy, the Golem, the Codex Gigas
- Meet at Týnská 627/7, in the Old Town

Meeting points differ from one tour to the next, so reread the one in your confirmation: Hradčany Square for the 8:30 am private tour, Schwarzenberg Palace for the 9 am small group, Malostranská metro for the walking tour, Jan Palach Square for the 10 am departure. From Malá Strana, tram 22 or 23 towards Pohořelec drops you near Hradčany. Excursion buses often make the castle their first stop, and the changing of the guard takes place at noon in the first courtyard, for about ten minutes.
As for conditions, every tour in my selection shows instant confirmation, and the private tour with tickets can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before departure, with bookings closing 3 hours before. The castle has cobblestones and slopes: the private tour lists wheelchair access, while the tip-based tour does not recommend wheelchairs. Security checks are random at the designated entrances; the real bottleneck is the ticket office in high season [Prague Now], which tickets already included let you skip.
Think about the calendar too. On Sundays, St. Vitus Cathedral only opens at noon [Salut Bye Bye]: avoid that day if the interior is your priority. The Golden Lane is free to enter after 5 pm, but its houses are then closed [View from Prague]. From 1 November the buildings close at 4 pm, so favor the morning in December. The Christmas market sets up on St. George’s Square from late November to the first Sunday of January, and the castle is closed on 24 December [Prague Castle Tickets]. The Old Royal Palace was closed from 3 September to 1 October 2026 and reopened on 2 October: check the castle closures page before booking, because a ticket is not automatically refunded.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book a Prague Castle tour in advance?
I recommend it for the morning private tour and for the small groups of 10 to 12 people, whose slots are limited. Every tour in my selection has instant confirmation. From 12 October to 11 November 2026, they show 26 to 31 days open out of 31, except the night tour, open 17 days out of 31. Details on the 8:30 am private tour.
What is the best time to avoid the crowds at Prague Castle?
Before 9:30 am or after 5 pm, according to the guides I consulted. Since the buildings open at 9 am, the 8:30 am private tour or the 9 am small group lets you get in before the buses arrive. Tuesday and Wednesday are cited as the quietest days. See the 9 am small group.
Are interior tickets included in a guided tour of Prague Castle?
It depends on the tour. They are included in the 8:30 am private tour and in the two small groups (no. 4 and no. 5). The other tours are limited to the exteriors, and the tip-based tour offers the interiors as an option at €18 according to the supplier. For the official price, check the hrad.cz site.
Is there an English-language guided tour of Prague Castle?
Yes, all 11 tours in my selection offer an English-speaking guide. Seven of them, including both small groups with tickets, are in English only (the night tour also runs in German). The three private tours (no. 1, no. 2, no. 3) and the 9:50 am group also list other languages, including French. Confirm the language when you book.
How long should I allow for a guided visit of Prague Castle?
Between 2 hours and 3 hours 30 depending on the format: 2 hours 15 for the walking tour without tickets, 2 hours 30 for the €47 small group, 3 hours for most of the others. Tickets already bought let you skip the ticket office queue, which matters in high season.
Private tour or small group: what is the practical difference?
A private tour is priced per group and gets cheaper per head: €220 for 1 adult, €280 for 2, €340 for 4. The small group stays at €47 to €53 per adult, with tickets. So the private tour is not cheaper, but it gives you a start as early as 8:30 am and a pace of your own. It is mostly worth it for 3 or 4 travelers. See the private tour.
