Take the all-inclusive small group, unless your pace, your schedule or one traveler’s mobility decides for you. Checked on Viator on October 5, 2026: €147 to €164 per adult on a small-group tour, with Scenic World, the wildlife park, lunch and the ferry included on the right option, versus €312 per adult for 2 on a private tour and €183 for 6, extras not included. The group tour stays cheaper at 2, 4 and 6 travelers. All 12 listings have an English-speaking guide. I keep private tours for children, reduced mobility or a flexible start time.
You have a few days in Sydney and someone told you the Blue Mountains deserve a full day. The real question, the one almost no guide settles with numbers, is this: a private tour or a shared minibus? I checked the Viator catalog on October 5, 2026 over a window from October 19 to November 18, 2026, and the result fits in one line: the all-inclusive group tour stays cheaper than a private one at 2, 4 and 6 travelers. For the most proven day, the all-inclusive small group, nearly 10,000 reviews at 4.9 on the platform.
So I won’t sell you a private tour as a saving. Its appeal lies elsewhere: choosing the departure time, stopping where you like, traveling with a child or someone who doesn’t walk much, not sharing the vehicle with twenty strangers. I kept 12 listings, all rated 4.7 or higher on at least 100 reviews, all open for booking at least 17 days out of 31 over the checked window. One thing to know before you read on: all 12 run with an English-speaking guide, and none advertises a guide in another language. Two listings also call for a precaution, flagged in their card: one includes no transfer from Sydney, the other is manually confirmed.
Why the Blue Mountains, and why the private-or-group question

The Blue Mountains are about 90 minutes by road from Sydney in light traffic, with Katoomba roughly a hundred kilometers from the city center. The Greater Blue Mountains Area covers 1,032,649 hectares and was listed by UNESCO on November 29, 2000 (UNESCO). It counts 91 eucalyptus species, 13% of the world total, and the Wollemi pine, discovered in 1994, survives only in a few isolated gorges (Wikipedia). Most days focus on Katoomba, Leura and Echo Point.
From Echo Point, the classic view is the Three Sisters: three sandstone pinnacles, Meehni (922 m), Wimlah (918 m) and Gunnedoo (906 m), declared an Aboriginal Place in January 2014 (Wikipedia). Be careful with the legend of the three petrified sisters that you’ll hear everywhere: according to Wikipedia, the popular version is attributed to a non-Indigenous schoolgirl, and the Gundungurra tell a distinct story, that of the « Seven Sisters » linked to the Pleiades. I present it as a popular tale, not as an ethnographic fact. If this side interests you, look at the day with an Aboriginal guide.
The private vs. group comparison at a glance
| Travelers | All-inclusive group, per adult | Estimated group total | Cheapest private, per adult | Private total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 adults | €147 to €164 | €295 to €327 | €312 | €623 |
| 4 adults | €147 to €164 | €589 to €655 | €224 | €894 |
| 6 adults | €147 to €164 | €884 to €982 | €183 | €1,095 |
How to read this table: the group price comes from the most proven listing, checked for 2 adults over the window from October 19 to November 18, 2026; the totals for 4 and 6 are an estimate, meaning the per-adult rate multiplied by the number of travelers, which I did not check directly. The private price comes from the listing that can be booked from 2 travelers, measured at 2, 4 and 6. Two other private tours are priced at 4 adults: €1,322 and €1,234 per vehicle.
What the table doesn’t say: with the right option, the group tour includes Scenic World, the wildlife park entry, lunch and the ferry, whereas private tours mostly cover transport and the guide, with the rest as extras. The per-adult price of a private tour drops sharply as the group grows, but it never catches up with the group tour, even at 6 and before adding tickets. A private tour is therefore not justified by budget: it is justified by pace, schedule, mobility and children.
The 12 Blue Mountains day trips I picked, from group to private
The order follows my logic: first the all-inclusive small groups, then the specialized formats (walking, sunset, culture, cycling), and finally the three private tours. All prices are in euros, per adult with their basis stated, checked on October 5, 2026. The guide speaks English on every listing.

1. The all-inclusive small group, the most proven
I put it first for a simple reason: nearly 10,000 reviews at 4.9 make it by far the most proven product in the selection. With the all-inclusive option, Scenic World, the wildlife park entry, lunch and the ferry back are settled in advance, so nothing to pull out of your pocket on the spot. The group is capped at 20 people and the guide speaks English.
- Groups of 20 people maximum
- Scenic World, wildlife park, lunch and ferry with the all-inclusive option
- Bookable up to 60 minutes before departure

2. The all-inclusive tour with three meeting points
Same promise as the previous listing, with a fixed meeting point: three departure points in Sydney between 6:40 and 6:55 am, and no hotel pickup. It means an early start, but the itinerary is all-inclusive, from the national park to Scenic World via the zoo and lunch.
- Lunch, Scenic World, zoo entry and ferry included
- National park fees included
- Meeting at Darling Harbour, Circular Quay or Pitt Street

3. The small group in a premium minibus
This is the formula I pick if I want comfort without going private: upscale minibus, Wi-Fi, bottled water and groups of 15 or 20 people. The walks stay easy, with no real hiking. Lunch is not included, so plan it separately.
- Groups of 15 or 20 people
- Scenic World and Featherdale entry included
- Pickup between 7:00 and 7:30 am, lunch not included

4. The budget group tour, walking-focused
At €76 per adult, it is the cheapest group departure of the lot, but the price is misleading: Scenic World and the zoo are paid on top. I recommend it to those who mainly want to walk, with 90 minutes on the trail and a waterfall, rather than chain attractions. Once the tickets are added, the gap with the all-inclusive options shrinks fast.
- Group of 22 to 27 people, air-conditioned minibus
- About 90 minutes of walking and a waterfall
- Fresh roll for lunch, children under 14 excluded unless agreed

5. The carbon-neutral eco day
It presents itself as the only excursion from the city with a carbon-offset vehicle. For €113, you get the wildlife park, national park fees and over 2 hours of guided walks, but not Scenic World. Its 4.74 rating is the lowest of the selection, which is still very good over 300 reviews.
- Group of 24 people maximum
- Featherdale entry and national park fees included
- Departure from two fixed points, around 7:15 or 7:30 am

6. Waterfalls and kangaroos, late start
For those who hate a 6 am wake-up: the start is late and the return comes after sunset. What I keep is the wild kangaroos of late afternoon and a 70-minute walk in the bush. The 11-seat maximum limits the dates, hence tighter availability than the other listings.
- Group of 11 people maximum
- Lunch and dinner included, snacks and water
- Pickup in front of your hotel

7. Sunset and wild kangaroos, 10 people maximum
The guide is a local hiker and photographer, and the program changes with the weather. The kangaroos of the Megalong Valley and the cheese-and-wine aperitif at sunset make it the most intimate outing of the lot. Note: this listing is manually confirmed by the operator, so book it at least 24 hours ahead.
- Group of 6 to 10 people
- Lunch, then cheese and wine at sunset
- Meeting at Circular Quay or Wentworth Falls

8. The day with an Aboriginal guide
It is the only listing in my selection that treats the cultural dimension with a local Aboriginal guide, which complements the nuance on the Three Sisters mentioned above. It includes an Acknowledgment of Country ceremony, a hot lunch and a visit to a wildlife park. It is the highest per-adult price of the group departures, justified by a group limited to 14 people.
- Local Aboriginal guide and a second guide, 14 people maximum
- Tea, coffee and scones in the morning, hot lunch and dessert
- Pickup from hotels in central Sydney

9. The Hanging Rock e-bike, on site
Worth flagging upfront: this is not an excursion from Sydney. The meeting point is in Blackheath and no transfer is provided, so I see it as an add-on for a two-day stay on site. In 3 hours, it replaces a hike of about 15 km to Hanging Rock, without the effort. Not recommended if you have back problems.
- Full-suspension e-bike, helmet, gloves and lock
- Safety briefing and entry fees included
- No transfer from Sydney, book at least 15 hours ahead

10. Private by 4×4 or minibus, with wildlife park and cruise
The first of the three private tours: hotel pickup around 8 am, adjustable time by agreement, pace set by your group. The rate checked is €330 per adult for 4 adults, or €1,322 per vehicle. The listing states a minimum of 3 travelers, so check the amount for your exact number before booking. Food and drinks are not included.
- Private tour, air-conditioned minibus and professional guide
- National park, wildlife park and river cruise back
- Departure around 8 am from the hotel, adjustable time

11. Private with koalas, kangaroos and a cruise
The highest rating of the three private tours, 4.95 over 134 reviews, with an operator active for more than 30 years. The program mixes koalas, kangaroos, a cruise and a guided forest walk, at your pace. Count €1,234 per vehicle for 4 adults, or €308 per adult; for 3, the listing showed €925. No meals or drinks.
- Private tour with a professional World Heritage guide
- Air-conditioned vehicle with seat belts, guided forest walk
- Departure around 8 am from the hotel, adjustable time

12. Private from 2 travelers, à la carte options
It is the only private tour I recommend from 2 travelers, and the only one whose price I measured for 2, 4 and 6: €312, €224 then €183 per adult. Lunch, Featherdale, Scenic World and the ferry are extras, so you build the day yourself. The rating is the lowest of the private tours (4.73) but the schedule and stops stay in your hands.
- Air-conditioned minibus, local guide and bottled water
- National park fees included
- Pickup at the hotel or in The Rocks

My decision grid. Solo or as a couple, on a tight budget: take the all-inclusive small group or its variant with three meeting points. You want to walk more than sightsee: the walking-focused group. You want evening light and kangaroos: the late start or the sunset tour for 10 people maximum. You travel as a family, with a young child or a person with reduced mobility: go private, with the listing bookable from 2 travelers, the 4×4 with wildlife park or the tour with koalas.
Compare like for like. The headline price of a €76 listing includes neither Scenic World nor the zoo, and most private tours leave lunch, Scenic World and the ferry as extras. I am not giving you a precise amount for those tickets: I found no reliable official source, so check the rates on the Scenic World website and on the wildlife park’s before comparing.
Language. All 12 products run in English, so you get English commentary at a brisk pace. If you need another language, other resellers offer private tours with guides in several languages, outside my Viator selection, for example at Civitatis. Then compare their scope the way you did here.
Children and mobility. Based on the listings’ exclusions, strollers and wheelchairs are refused on the two best-selling all-inclusive options; children under 14 are excluded from the walking-focused group, unless agreed on request. Child seats are indicated on the day with an Aboriginal guide and on the à la carte private tour. Check these points on the listing before paying.
Getting there without a tour. The train links Sydney Central to Katoomba in about 2 hours, with one departure an hour according to Sydney Uncovered. The Opal fare is capped per day: I don’t quote an amount, so check Transport for NSW. On site, a hop-on hop-off bus serves Echo Point, Leura Cascades, Katoomba Falls and Scenic World, at the cost of 4 hours of round-trip transport (RACV).
Weather and season. At altitude it is cooler than in Sydney: highs of 23 to 28 °C in summer, about 11 °C in winter, with possible frosts in July and August (Wikipedia). Bring a warm layer and a waterproof jacket even in the austral spring, the period of my checked window. On weekends and public holidays, the Great Western Highway slows down: a weekday departure is more comfortable.
Lead times and cancellation. The listings show free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, to be reconfirmed on the page. Count on booking the day before for late-start options and for private tours, and at least 60 minutes ahead for the two most flexible departures. One listing flags a peak period from December 23 to January 4, 2027, with stricter punctuality rules.

Frequently asked questions
Blue Mountains private or group tour from Sydney: which to choose?
Choose the all-inclusive group if budget matters: €147 to €164 per adult with Scenic World, wildlife park, lunch and ferry depending on the option, checked on October 5, 2026. Choose a private tour for a flexible schedule, young children or reduced mobility. See the most proven group tour.
Does a private tour get cheaper from a certain number of travelers?
No, based on my checks. On the listing bookable from 2 travelers, the private tour goes from €312 per adult for 2 to €183 for 6, excluding lunch and attractions, while the all-inclusive group stays at €147 to €164 per adult. The gap narrows without disappearing. See the à la carte private tour.
Is there a Blue Mountains tour with a French-speaking guide?
Not in my selection: the 12 listings I kept are in English, and none advertises a guide in another language. Private offers with guides in other languages exist at other resellers. Check the language on the listing before paying, and compare what is included.
Can you visit the Blue Mountains from Sydney by train?
Yes. The train links Sydney Central to Katoomba in about 2 hours, with one departure an hour. The Opal fare is capped per day, to be checked on Transport for NSW. You do lose time on site, hence the appeal of an organized tour for a single day.
Do you need to book far in advance?
Not for the most classic group departures, bookable up to 60 minutes before. Allow one day for late starts and private tours, and 24 hours for the manually confirmed sunset tour. See this outing.
