The 5-8 December 2026 long weekend doesn’t work the same everywhere in Spain. Sunday 6 (Constitution Day) and Tuesday 8 (Immaculate Conception, a national holiday) are public holidays across the whole country. Monday 7 is only a holiday in nine autonomous communities and in Melilla, including Madrid, Andalusia and Castile and León. From Madrid, Segovia and Toledo are about half an hour away by train. From Barcelona, Girona and Montserrat each make a day trip. Check whether Monday 7 is a holiday where you’re going before you book.

The 2026 calendar gives Spain a long weekend from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December. Constitution Day falls on a Sunday this year, on 6 December, so the holiday moves to Monday 7 only in the regions that decided to move it. That detail changes your trip.

Tuesday 8 December is the Immaculate Conception, a national holiday that doesn’t move. Monday 7 is a holiday only where the region chose to shift the 6th: that’s the case in Madrid, Andalusia, Castile and León, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Extremadura, Murcia, La Rioja and Melilla. It isn’t in Catalonia, the Basque Country, Valencia, Galicia, Navarre, the Balearics, the Canaries, Castilla-La Mancha or Ceuta.

The reference list is the BOE resolution published on 28 October 2025 (BOE-A-2025-21667). Press calendars and travel aggregators don’t all agree, so rely on the BOE and on your region’s official calendar.

For readers from the UK, the closest comparison is a bank holiday weekend, but England and Wales have none between the late-August one and Christmas Day. Scotland does have St Andrew’s Day on Monday 30 November, which doesn’t line up with this bridge (GOV.UK, bank holidays).

In practice, where Monday 7 is a holiday, taking Friday 4 off is enough to get five days without work, from Friday to Tuesday. Elsewhere, you need to take Monday 7 to link Saturday to Tuesday. For the logic behind the November bridges, read our guide to the November 2026 long weekend in Spain.

1. Segovia: Christmas market and Roman aqueduct 30 minutes from Madrid

Segovia, Castile and León

AVE, 25 to 28 min from Madrid Half a day or a full day Monday 7 is a holiday Market 5 Dec to 6 Jan

The Christmas market sets up on the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza San Martín from Saturday 5 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, with around thirty casetas selling crafts, sweets, soaps and honey. According to the Segovia tourist office listing, updated on 8 September 2026 and relayed by Festivales de España, the usual opening hours are 11:00 to 14:00, then 17:00 to 22:00. The city’s programme (carousel, nativity scenes, light shows) hasn’t been checked against the city’s own website. To put this market in context, our guide to Europe’s Christmas markets 2026 compares the cities.

The historic centre is best explored on foot, between the Roman aqueduct and the Gothic cathedral. It’s sloped and paved, so wear suitable shoes. The AVE from Madrid takes about 25 to 28 minutes according to aggregators; check the timetable on Renfe.

Highlights

  • A compact market across two squares in the old town
  • The Roman aqueduct and the Gothic cathedral a short walk from the market
  • A day return from Madrid is possible
Pixidia tip: Saturday 5 and Monday 7 are the busiest days from Madrid. Trains run more often in the morning and late afternoon, so aim for those slots.

2. Toledo: markets in the old town, an ordinary Monday 7

Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha

Avant train, 25 to 35 min from Madrid One day Monday 7: a normal day Markets 21 Nov to 6 Jan

Toledo isn’t affected by the Monday 7 holiday: the city runs as normal that day, unlike the capital. Several markets spread across squares in the old town (casco histórico), from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to the Plaza de Zocodover, over a general period from 21 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Entry is free; the carousel and some attractions have their own prices (Festivales de España).

The detailed programme should be published by the city hall in November, and the sources don’t agree on the date of the lights switch-on. Until the official programme is out, plan your visit from late November on. A 2023 source describes the city as packed during long weekends: arrive before 11:00 or after 17:00.

Highlights

  • An ordinary Monday 7, unlike Madrid
  • Markets spread across several squares, with Zocodover open until 29 December
  • A town to explore on foot, with a partly pedestrianised centre
Pixidia tip: leave the car outside the centre. Check the opening hours of the cathedral and the Alcázar on the official sites: they haven’t been confirmed for this bridge.

3. Alhama de Aragón: a spa town where Monday 7 is a holiday

Alhama de Aragón, province of Zaragoza

Spa resort in Zaragoza province Monday 7 holiday in Aragon Access from Madrid to check Spa hours to confirm

Alhama de Aragón has a balneario, one of the thermal spa resorts in the province of Zaragoza. Monday 7 is a holiday in Aragon, so the bridge is complete there, which makes it a good choice for rest over a winter long weekend.

The 2026 thermal bono from the Diputación de Zaragoza, a five-day, four-night cure, is reserved for residents of the province and subject to age or status conditions. It isn’t an offer for passing tourists, so we don’t quote its prices. The 2026 conditions still need to be confirmed with the Diputación de Zaragoza. Spa opening hours, 2026 public rates and the journey from Madrid couldn’t be confirmed. To compare with other cures, read our guide to thermal spa breaks in Spain in autumn.

Highlights

  • A place to rest, far from the bustle of the Christmas markets
  • A complete bridge thanks to the Monday 7 holiday in Aragon
  • An option for people who want relaxation rather than sightseeing
Pixidia tip: book directly with the establishment. Ask for non-resident rates, spa opening hours and access from Madrid before you commit.

4. Girona: old town and the Call quarter, under an hour from Barcelona

Girona, Catalonia

AVE, about 38 min (to check) Half a day Monday 7: a normal day 2026 market not confirmed

Girona is best explored on foot: its colourful houses along the Onyar, its cathedral and the Call, the old Jewish quarter of narrow lanes. From Barcelona, the AVE takes about 38 minutes according to aggregators; the timetable still needs checking on Renfe.

We found no Christmas market date for 2026. The 2025 edition was held in Independence Square every day except 25 and 26 December and 1 January, but the city hall hasn’t confirmed its 2026 programme yet. Don’t confuse it with the Temps de Flors festival, which takes place in May.

Highlights

  • A compact old town, ideal for half a day from Barcelona
  • The Call quarter and its narrow old lanes
  • A normal Monday 7 in Catalonia, as on any weekday
Pixidia tip: until the programme is published, present Girona for its old town and its history, not for its market. The streets are steep and the staircases plentiful.

5. Montserrat: monastery and Black Madonna, an hour from Barcelona

Montserrat, Catalonia

R5 then rack railway Half a day to a full day Monday 7: a normal day Winter hours to confirm

Montserrat is a mountain with spectacular shapes, home to a Benedictine monastery and the Black Virgin, La Moreneta. From Barcelona, the R5 train goes to Monistrol de Montserrat, then the rack railway climbs to the monastery.

The winter hours of the rack railway and of the services couldn’t be confirmed: the monastery’s website redirects to another domain. Check them before you go, especially if you want to hear the Escolania boys’ choir. On public holidays, the crowds are heavy.

Highlights

  • A natural and spiritual site about an hour from Barcelona
  • Hiking trails starting from the monastery
  • La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, at the heart of the monastery
Pixidia tip: check that the rack railway is running on the day of your visit, as it can be limited in winter. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the queue.

6. Caldes de Montbui: municipal thermal baths, 45 minutes by bus from Barcelona

Caldes de Montbui, Vallès Oriental

Line 203, about 45 min Monday 7: a normal day Municipal thermal baths Opening hours to confirm

Caldes de Montbui, in the Vallès Oriental, is a small spa town about 45 minutes by bus from Barcelona, according to Barcelona Urbana. The El Safareig municipal baths offer general admission at €7, according to a blog whose publication date is unknown.

The same blog says the baths open from Wednesday to Sunday, so they may be closed on Tuesday 8 December, a national public holiday. Confirm the hours and book on the establishment’s website before you travel.

Highlights

  • Municipal thermal baths at a modest entry price, to confirm
  • A spa option you can reach by public transport from Barcelona
  • A clear contrast with the city, with no complicated route
Pixidia tip: confirm the baths are open on Tuesday 8 December before you leave, then check the bus timetable from Barcelona.

7. Donostia: free Christmas market in the Basque Country, from Paris via Hendaye

Donostia / San Sebastián, Basque Country

TGV to Hendaye, then regional train One to two days Monday 7: a normal day Market 1 Dec to 6 Jan

Donostia’s Christmas market takes over the Paseo del Urumea and the Plaza Ramón Labayen from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. The stalls open from 10:30 to 14:00, then from 16:30 to 20:30, and entry is free, according to the page of the San Sebastián tourist office. That page shows no update date: reconfirm the dates before you go.

From Paris, one option is the TGV to Hendaye, then a regional train or a bus to the city. The December 2026 timetables haven’t been checked, and the journey is long. In the Basque Country, Monday 7 isn’t a holiday, but Tuesday 8 is.

Highlights

  • A free market, with pintxos to eat on the spot
  • A seafront and a compact old town
  • An Atlantic escape, a change from inland Spain
Pixidia tip: journeys from Paris are long. Choose a route without a change, and compare it with a flight to Bilbao.

8. Bilbao: Guggenheim and the Ría, with no confirmed 2026 market

Bilbao, Basque Country

Direct flight from Paris-Orly (to check) One to two days Monday 7: a normal day 2026 market not confirmed

Bilbao takes one to two days around the Guggenheim and the banks of the Ría, where you get around on foot and by metro. Aggregators list direct flights from Paris to Bilbao, but no timetable has been verified for December 2026.

For the Christmas market, the 2025-2026 edition ran in Doña Casilda Park from 5 December 2025 to 5 January 2026. The 2026-2027 programme isn’t confirmed. A cabalgata with Olentzero and Mari Domingi is announced for 23 December, a date to reconfirm (Euskaltel).

Highlights

  • The Guggenheim and the banks of the Ría, doable in a day
  • A city you can explore without a car
  • Basque food, to taste in the pintxo bars of the Casco Viejo
Pixidia tip: don’t present the 2025-2026 edition as the 2026 one. The market’s location and dates still need confirming with Bilbao city council, and bring an umbrella.

9. Seville: Monday 7 is a holiday in Andalusia, for a full bridge

Historic centre of Seville, in Andalusia

Seville, Andalusia

Direct flight from Paris (to check) Two days recommended Monday 7 holiday (BOE) Mild climate, according to guides

Monday 7 is a holiday in Andalusia according to the BOE resolution, so the bridge is complete there. A local calendar we checked doesn’t list this Monday; we rely on the official source, but check it if you book a service for that day. The AVE from Madrid runs, and the journey time needs checking on Renfe.

Travel guides describe Seville as one of the mildest cities on this list in December, but none gives an official figure to quote. The 2026 Christmas market isn’t confirmed. For the monuments, our comparison of Alcázar visits in Seville helps you choose between a private and a group tour.

Highlights

  • A complete bridge in Andalusia thanks to the Monday 7 holiday
  • Monuments close together in the historic centre, all walkable
  • A city that suits a two-day stay
Pixidia tip: flights and trains fill up fast for the weekend of 5 to 6 December. Book early, and don’t count on a Christmas market until it’s officially announced.

10. Sierra Nevada or Baqueira: snow, if the opening is confirmed

Pico Veleta, highest peak of the Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada (Andalusia) and Baqueira (Catalonia)

Granada airport for Sierra Nevada Opening planned for 28 Nov. Monday 7 holiday in Andalusia Alpine skiing

For snow, Sierra Nevada, near Granada, and Baqueira, in the Catalan Pyrenees, are listed by travel aggregators with a provisional opening on 28 November 2026. The official sites of both resorts couldn’t be checked: this is a planned opening, never a guarantee.

Insufficient snow at the end of November could delay the opening. For Sierra Nevada, Monday 7 is a holiday in Andalusia; for Baqueira, it isn’t a holiday in Catalonia. From Barcelona, reaching Baqueira needs a transfer whose duration hasn’t been checked.

Highlights

  • Two mountain areas to choose from, depending on whether you start from the south or the north-east
  • A ski option for a long weekend, if the opening is confirmed
  • A more active format than the other getaways on the list
Pixidia tip: don’t book a non-refundable package until the resort has confirmed its opening and dates.
