The Dickens Festijn 2026 runs on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2026 in Deventer. Tickets cost €7.50 online (plus a €0.25 fee), with a compulsory time slot. Entry is only through the Keizerstraat, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm according to the official ticket shop.

Checked on against the official sources cited (dickensfestijn.nl).

Every year, the Bergkwartier in Deventer turns into a 19th-century English town. For two days, the medieval streets of this Dutch city welcome Scrooge, Miss Havisham, Oliver Twist and more than 950 costumed characters. The 2026 edition changes how you get in, though: for the first time, entry is by timed slot. This guide covers prices, opening hours, the route from Amsterdam, Utrecht or Schiphol, and the points that most press coverage hasn’t picked up yet. Tickets, hours, access and programme were checked on dickensfestijn.nl on 18 October 2026; train times, temperatures and other sites’ prices are flagged in the text.

A 19th-century English Christmas in the heart of Deventer

The festival was founded in 1991 by Emmy Strik and her husband Jan Strik, from their home on the Walstraat. According to the interview « The origins of the Dickens Festival » published on the official site, the town council was hesitant at first. The event has since settled into the Bergkwartier, a neighbourhood whose restored streets and buildings form the set. The official site speaks of « thousands of little lights and Christmas trees as tall as the houses ».

The idea fits in one sentence: for two days, Deventer plays a Dickens town, and the actors and extras stay in character. The 2026 programme names Ebenezer Scrooge and the three spirits from A Christmas Carol, Miss Havisham in her wedding dress, Samuel Pickwick, Fagin and Oliver Twist, plus Queen Victoria in a sedan chair. Visitors also describe carol singers going from door to door, gentlemen in top hats and gingerbread sellers.

The Bergkwartier in Deventer

€7.50 per ticket 2 days, 12 and 13 December about 6°C by day A December weekend

The Bergkwartier sits on a river dune, a little higher than the rest of town, according to the festival’s accessibility page. The cobbles and slopes make the route harder for people with reduced mobility. For the weather, the average December high in Deventer is around 6°C, according to waar-en-wanneer.nl (2009-2025 averages, unofficial source).

Highlights

  • More than 950 costumed characters, according to the official site.
  • A « Sing Along » open to everyone every day in the Bergkerk, around 5:30 pm according to the tourist office.
  • A one-way walking route through the streets of the Bergkwartier.

Outside the festival: an Amsterdam tour

Pixidia tip: the Amsterdam tour below is not part of the festival. If you’re coming on 12 or 13 December, check that this tour is available on those dates on Viator before you book.

Tickets 2026: €7.50 online, time slot required

In 2026, a full-price ticket costs €7.50 per person. An early-bird pre-sale at €6 opened on Thursday 24 September 2026 at 12:00 pm, in limited numbers. According to the official FAQ, it was sold out as of 18 October 2026. A ticket bought at the box office costs €9, according to the same FAQ. Online and debit card payments add a €0.25 service fee. The FAQ doesn’t say whether same-day box-office sales come with a time slot: same-day slots are to be confirmed with the organiser. An online ticket with a slot is still the better choice.

The municipality of Deventer and the tourist office pages still list €6 at the box office and opening hours of 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Those figures don’t match the official 2026 ticket shop. For your budget, plan on €7.50 online and €9 on site until the organiser confirms otherwise.

Dates, opening hours and access: the 2026 traps

The festival runs for two days, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December 2026. The dates of 13 and 14 December still visible on some pages belong to the 2025 edition, the 33rd. That year, entry was charged for the first time, at €6.

How do you get to Deventer from Amsterdam or Utrecht?

From Amsterdam Centraal, the direct train takes about 1 h 10 to 1 h 30 according to journey aggregators. From Utrecht, aggregators give about 50 minutes, but that figure is unreliable. From Schiphol, allow 1 h 20 to 1 h 35: aggregators disagree, one showing a direct train and another a change. These times are indicative. Check the exact timetable on the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) website on the day, as aggregators don’t pick up disruptions.

Once you’re at the station, the festival is a 3-minute walk away. The official site says the festival starts at the NS station. Some aggregators give 5 to 10 minutes on foot, but that isn’t the figure the organiser uses. If you’re combining Amsterdam and Deventer, our guide to the best day trips from Amsterdam helps you pick a tour in the city.

One entrance only: the Keizerstraat

The route runs via the Keizerstraat, near Hotel Finch and the Schouwburg. The official ticket shop states it’s the only access to the site. Visitors wait behind barriers, then enter in groups according to their slot. Volunteers in CREW vests show you where to go. Many guides still mention the Walstraat entrance: follow the signs to the Keizerstraat on the day.

By car and by bike

The Centrumgarage, Op de Keizer 1, behind the HEMA, is open 24 hours a day, according to the official site. Its rates weren’t dated on the page we checked, so ask on site. The Saxion car park, Berkelweg 1, is free on 12 and 13 December 2026. The Worp car park has limited capacity, according to the official site, which shows « Full = full ». A pedestrian boat shuttle links the Worp to the IJsselhotel on both days.

By bike, free and supervised parking is available at the NS station, at Op de Keizer and at Lamme van Dieseplein. The official site strongly recommends coming by train or bike.

Step by step: a typical day at the festival

The plan below follows a Saturday visit. Sunday follows the same pattern, with a calmer crowd according to NOS for the 2025 edition (2025 data, to be confirmed for 2026).

  1. Arrival at Deventer station. The festival starts as soon as you step off the train, 3 minutes’ walk from the site. You may spot the first costumed characters on the way.
  2. Through the Keizerstraat. Show up at your time slot. The organiser aims for a queue of one hour at most, compared with up to two hours at peak times in 2024 according to the press.
  3. Stroll through the Bergkwartier. The neighbourhood’s streets, including the Walstraat, Golstraat, Damstraat and Bergstraat, form the one-way walking route. Take time to stop at the scenes: visitors describe a series of little vignettes rather than an organised show.
  4. Snack break in the streets. Vendors sell mulled wine, baked potatoes, pastries, cider and gingerbread. The official site also mentions « punch and roasted chestnuts ».
  5. Saturday afternoon: the Kabinet. The Charles Dickens Kabinet, at Walstraat 20, opens on Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. It shows the collection of Emmy Strik, according to the official site. The admission fee couldn’t be verified, so ask on site.
  6. 5:30 pm: the Sing Along. Every day, a group singalong takes place in the Bergkerk. According to the tourist office, it lasts about 15 minutes, from 5:30 to 5:45 pm.
  7. End of the day. The ticket shop closes at 5:00 pm and the official programme at 6:00 pm. Plan to leave when the programme ends, with a margin for the shuttle or train.

The queue is part of the experience, as visitors say. A time slot doesn’t remove the wait, but it makes it predictable. The accessibility page advises arriving around 10:00 am or after 4:00 pm; the organiser says that with slots, arrival time makes no difference.

Budget: what to plan for a day

The budget has only a few line items. Tickets weigh most, followed by transport. The figures below are rough guides, dated 18 October 2026.

  • Adult online ticket: €7.50 per person, plus a €0.25 fee for online or debit card payment.
  • Child up to and including age 7: free. Above that age, the €7.50 ticket applies.
  • Amsterdam to Deventer train: fare not checked for this guide; check the price on ns.nl before you leave.
  • Parking: free at the Saxion car park on 12 and 13 December. The Centrumgarage didn’t show a dated rate.
  • Kabinet Dickens: admission not verified; don’t budget for it without confirming on site.
  • Food and drink: not priced by the sources. Mulled wine and pastries are bought one at a time, as you fancy.

For a family of four, two of them over 7, four tickets at €7.50 come to €30, before the €0.25 service fee charged by the organiser and travel costs. If you’re coming from Amsterdam, the train is the transport cost to plan for, and its fare still needs confirming on ns.nl.

By profile: families, couples, tight budgets, reduced mobility

Families

Children up to and including age 7 get in free, which lightens the load for families with young kids. Some scenes are hard to follow for the youngest, according to visitor accounts, and there’s no official age recommendation. Keep that in mind if your little one doesn’t like characters who shout: Scrooge tells the crowd off, and Fagin keeps an eye on pockets.

Couples and friends

On Saturday, the Kabinet is open until 4:00 pm, which leaves time to visit it before the 5:30 pm Sing Along. On Sunday 14 December 2025, the queue was almost nonexistent: 5 minutes to pay and get in, according to NOS (2025 data, to be confirmed for 2026). To stretch the trip, the Berlin Christmas markets 2026 or Christmas at Tivoli in Copenhagen 2026 are other options for a longer break.

On a tight budget

The €6 early-bird pre-sale is sold out, so the €7.50 full price applies online. The train is the main cost. The Saxion car park is free on both days, and bike parking is free and supervised. Avoid paying €9 on site by booking your slot online.

Reduced mobility

The official site provides a separate queue at the Walstraat entrance; general access is through the Keizerstraat. The separate queue is for people who can’t wait long, with one companion per person. Large groups must notify the organiser in advance. Accessibility ambassadors, recognisable by their white vests with a wheelchair pictogram, are present on both days. Accessible toilets, including MIVA toilets, line the route. The ground stays cobbled and sloped, so take care. Electric wheelchairs can be recharged at the Bergkerk.

Costume lovers

To take part as an extra, the waiting list stays open until 19 November 2026; sign-ups are reserved for a later admission, depending on available places. Visitors have no obligation to wear a costume.

Mistakes to avoid on the day

  • Paying €6 at the box office. That price is on the municipality’s page, but the official ticket shop says €9 on site. Your safest bet is an online ticket at €7.50.
  • Turning up without a slot. Timed tickets have been on sale since 24 September 2026; on the day, visitors enter in groups according to their slot.
  • Looking for the entrance on the Walstraat. The Keizerstraat is the only way in.
  • Counting on a 6:00 pm closing. The ticket shop says 5:00 pm and the programme 6:00 pm, so keep a return ticket with a margin.
  • Buying on social media. The organiser warns against these sales; to resell a ticket, use TicketSwap.
  • Bringing a dog. Dogs aren’t recommended, except guide dogs.
  • Wearing the wrong shoes. Our editorial advice: flat, grippy shoes, because the cobbles and slopes make themselves felt after an hour in the queue.

Where to stay and coming as a group

The hotels cited in our research have no verified rate for the festival dates, so this guide doesn’t price accommodation. Hotel Royal, in the centre, is a 5-minute walk from the station according to the hotel. Huis Vermeer is a guesthouse with 11 rooms in an 18th-century building. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites is near the A1, with paid parking on site. Compare rates for your dates before you book.

For a group travelling by coach, the official FAQ describes registration through a dedicated link: parking permit, route and map two weeks before the event. Use the FAQ for the procedure. The Worp car park has limited capacity, so a pedestrian boat shuttle links the Worp to the IJsselhotel on both days.

What other guides don’t tell you

The six points below appear on the official pages checked on 18 October 2026. Several are missing or wrong in some guides: the municipality and the VVV list €6 at the box office and hours of 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, europa.tips claims there is no advance booking, and some aggregators give 5 to 10 minutes on foot.

  • Tickets have a time slot for the first time in 2026. The stated goal is a queue of one hour at most. Timed tickets have been on sale since 24 September 2026, according to the official FAQ (checked 18 October 2026).
  • The €6 early-bird pre-sale is sold out, and full price is €7.50. The municipality and tourist office pages still show €6 and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. According to the official ticket shop (checked 18 October 2026), the box-office price is €9.
  • Entry is only through the Keizerstraat. Several guides refer to the Walstraat as the entrance. The official ticket shop (checked 18 October 2026) points to the Keizerstraat, near Hotel Finch.
  • Saxion car park, Berkelweg 1, is free on 12 and 13 December 2026. This is missing from the transport guides we checked. It appears on the accessibility page (checked 18 October 2026).
  • The station is a 3-minute walk from the festival. Aggregators and some route tools say 5 to 10 minutes. The official site (checked 18 October 2026) says 3 minutes.
  • The extras’ waiting list closes on 19 November 2026, and the programme isn’t published yet. Details are due in early December, according to the programme page (checked 18 October 2026). Any activity times shown elsewhere are unverified.
