On 31 December 2026, eight Viator experiences are open in Sydney, from €22.28 to €342.23 per adult for two travelers. Ratings range from 4.75 to 4.97 out of 5. The jet boat has only two time slots open that evening: book it first.

Checked on on the Viator partner API (prices, ratings, availability).

On 31 December, Sydney lives to the rhythm of New Year’s Eve. Sydney Tourism expects more than a million spectators along the harbour foreshore, with two highlights, at 9 p.m. and at midnight. A practical question comes up then: what can you book that day, and what stays open? We checked availability for 31 December and 1 January on the Viator partner API, for two adults, and kept eight experiences that take place before the fireworks or during the day. The first on the list, the 3.5-hour small-group walking tour, is also the best rated: 4.97 out of 5.

A word on method before we start. None of these experiences guarantees you a place to watch the fireworks. They take place before the show or during the day, and we do not present them any other way. Information about the evening comes from Sydney Tourism, NSW National Parks and the official viewpoints page; two points come from a third-party guide and are flagged as such. Every price in this article is a price checked on 22 October 2026 for 31 December, based on two adults: time slots move, and none of these is a « from » rate.

Why New Year’s Eve in Sydney is planned during the day

New Year’s Eve 2026-2027 runs from Thursday 31 December to Friday 1 January. The NSW National Parks and Sydney Tourism give the same period for the harbour sites. Sydney Tourism announces a show at 9 p.m., called « Calling Country », then the midnight fireworks: these are the published times we use. The fireworks are set off from Cockle Bay, at Darling Harbour, according to the official viewpoints page (2026 edition), which does not specify how long the shows last. The ceremonies before 9 p.m. that some guides mention are not confirmed by the official sites, and we do not repeat them.

The first figure to keep in mind is the crowd. Sydney Tourism announces more than a million spectators along the harbour foreshore. The NSW National Parks, which manages the islands and the bay sites, reports that as of 22 October 2026 five paid sites are full: Clark Island, Shark Island, Goat Island, Bradleys Head and Strickland Estate. North Head is not marked as full on that date. Ferries to the islands cost €47.71 per adult or child, and gates open at 5 p.m. If your evening depends on an island, book before you count on it.

For the Opera House forecourt, a third-party guide says entry is free with a booking and that bookings open on 26 December at 10 a.m. Neither point is confirmed by the official site: treat them as announcements to check. Opera Australia, for its part, announced on 14 May 2026 that its New Year’s Eve shows were on sale, which confirms the programme exists, without detailing the times.

What is still missing today is a complete official programme, with the time of each highlight and an up-to-date list of viewpoints.

Prices and availability checked on the Viator partner API on 22 October 2026 for the period from 31 December 2026 to 1 January 2027; they may change.

To read this table, start with the « Available days » column. If you can only be at the harbour in the evening, prioritise the experiences open on both days, which leave a second chance on 1 January: the jet boat, the helicopter, the Blue Mountains day, the private tour and the food tour. Products open on one day only, such as the SCG behind-the-scenes tour, the walking tour or the pearl farm, require choosing 31 December now. For the food tour, the only option open on the 31st is the private one, at €342.23 per adult: the price shown for the small group does not apply to that evening.

The 8 experiences to book for 31 December

Guided walking tour of Sydney on foot, small group
Source: Viator

1. The walking tour that ends facing the harbour

Rating 4.97 (658 reviews) 3 h 30 €55.71 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation Available 1 day out of 2

We put this tour first for two reasons: it is the best rated of the selection, and it matches the 31st exactly. Three and a half hours on foot, in a small group of twelve people at most, with an expert guide. The route starts with history and the First Nations, crosses the historic district of The Rocks, then ends facing the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, at The Squire’s Landing. This ending puts you on the harbour with your bearings. It is not a reserved place for the fireworks, and the listing does not give the exact end time. The catch lies in the time slots: at the check, two of three slots are open on the 31st, and on 1 January there are none. So book before you think about the rest of the day.

  • A craft beer or soft drink included, alcohol reserved for those 18 and over
  • Meeting point in front of the Customs House, near the steps and the access ramp
  • Free cancellation according to the listing

Jet boat on Sydney Harbour

2. The jet boat from Circular Quay

Rating 4.94 (935 reviews) 30 min €54.11 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation Available 2 days out of 2

Second-best rating in the selection, 4.94 out of 5 across 935 reviews, for a thirty-minute activity only. The jet boat leaves from the eastern pontoon of Circular Quay, wharf 1, between the ferry wharves and the Opera House, and speeds across the harbour. We suggest it to those who want a strong moment on the water without a long journey. Ponchos and secure lockers are provided. The catch is the 31st: only two slots out of nine are open at the check, against four on 1 January. If this departure matters for your day, book it first. The listing asks you to arrive thirty minutes before departure.

  • Departure from the eastern pontoon of Circular Quay, wharf 1
  • Ponchos and secure lockers provided

3. Behind the scenes at the Sydney Cricket Ground

Rating 4.91 (740 reviews) 1 h 30 €22.28 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation Available 1 day out of 2

The most affordable fare in the selection, €22.28 per adult, for a ninety-minute visit behind the scenes of the stadium and its museum, with a professional guide. The meeting point is the only one in the list that is named and located: Sydney Cricket Ground, Driver Avenue, in Moore Park. It is our choice for a calm morning, away from the harbour crowds, and for those who enjoy sporting history. The catch: on 1 January the tour is closed at the check, and on 31 December only two of five slots are open. The journey between Moore Park and the harbour is not covered in the listing. Allow a wide margin and check the route on the day.

4. The Blue Mountains in ten hours, all-inclusive

Rating 4.9 (10041 reviews) 10 h €213.27 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation Available 2 days out of 2

This is the most talked-about day trip out of the city in the selection, with 10,041 reviews and a rating of 4.9 out of 5. Ten hours in a small group with a local guide, between Three Sisters, Scenic World and the lookouts, in an all-inclusive package. You choose between Featherdale and Sydney Zoo, with 24 hours’ notice. The return is by shuttle on the Parramatta River to Circular Quay, around 5 p.m. according to the listing. This day suits anyone who wants to leave the city on the 31st, provided they accept a long day: nothing guarantees being at the harbour before 9 p.m. The catch is the price: the rate shown at the top of the listing does not match the slot checked, which is €213.27 per person. Keep this figure for your budget, and reread the return time when you book. The departure point is not stated in the listing: ask the operator before you pay.

5. The private visit of the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Bondi

Rating 4.9 (143 reviews) 4 h €273.75 to €301.13 per adult (base 2) Private tour Available 2 days out of 2

A private half-day, with no extra passengers: a single family or group aboard an air-conditioned vehicle, with an expert guide. Four hours between the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, The Gap and Bondi Beach, in an order that leaves time to look. The 4.9 out of 5 rating rests on 143 reviews, a smaller number than the large excursions in the list. It is the right choice for a couple who want a day with nothing to organise and nothing to share. The catch is twofold. On 31 December, one slot is open at the check, at 8 a.m., at €273.75 per adult; the 1 p.m. slot is full: read the price of the option offered before you pay. And the listing gives no departure point: ask the operator where the pick-up is before you pay.

  • Opera House, Harbour Bridge, The Gap and Bondi Beach

Visit of a pearl and oyster farm on the Hawkesbury River

6. The Broken Bay pearl farm, an hour to the north

Rating 4.84 (167 reviews) 1 h to 4 h €29.29 to €88.49 per adult (base 2) Available 1 day out of 2

A different kind of outing: the only pearl and oyster farm in New South Wales, according to the listing, on the Hawkesbury River, about an hour north of Sydney. We keep it for those who want a calm outing away from the city, and who love the coast. The duration varies from one to four hours, and that is the point to watch: if the visit lasts four hours, a return before 9 p.m. is not guaranteed, and the listing does not promise it. So choose an early slot and keep a margin. The 31st is the only open day of the window, with eight slots out of 26 at the check, and on 1 January there are none. The listing gives the M1 exits to take depending on where you start.

  • Live commentary and local guide
  • Goods and services tax included
  • Free cancellation according to the listing

Helicopter flying over Sydney Harbour

7. The helicopter flight over the harbour

Rating 4.8 (691 reviews) 20 min €171.89 per adult (base 2) Instant confirmation Available 2 days out of 2

Twenty minutes of panoramic flight over the harbour, with a pilot who comments on the sites, at around 300 metres of altitude according to the listing. It is the only flight in the selection, and the shortest. We place it here for the view, not for the fireworks: this flight is not a place for the show, and we do not present it as one. On 31 December, 15 slots out of 21 are open at the check, the rest are full. The listing mentions free transfers to the city centre, but the meeting point is not named in the data we checked: ask the operator before you pay. The catch lies in the cancellation: it is not free on this product. The listing provides a full refund if you cancel at least two full days before departure, and a possible cancellation in case of bad weather. Read this policy before you pay.

  • Free transfers to the city centre according to the listing
  • Arrive 30 minutes before departure
  • Mobile or paper ticket

8. The 3.5-hour food tour, six tastings

Rating 4.75 (345 reviews) 3 h 30 €342.23 per adult (base 2), private option Available 2 days out of 2

The most indulgent of the list: six tastings in three and a half hours through Oxford Street and Surry Hills, with the operator Secret Food Tours. The rating is 4.75 out of 5 across 345 reviews, the lowest of the selection, but still solid. The tour starts at 1 Oxford Street, near Hyde Park, and the guide carries an orange umbrella. At the check, the only option open on 31 December is the private one, at €342.23 per person for two adults. The small group, shown at €107.59, is full that evening. We recommend it to those who want a food experience without organising anything. The catch is the price: check the option you choose before you pay.

  • Six tastings, including stuffed zucchini flowers and Greek honey biscuits
  • Tour ends at the corner of Bourke Street and Arthur Street, in Surry Hills

Practical tips on the spot

Port of Sydney, with the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge
Photo by Steven Wei on Unsplash

Plan the day in two blocks. At the check for the 31st, the open departures are: jet boat at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.; SCG behind-the-scenes at 11 a.m. and noon; pearl farm between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. depending on the option. Slots move: check the exact time when you book. Then keep the end of the day free of bookings. With more than a million spectators expected on the foreshore, allow more time than usual to reach the harbour, and do not count on a last-minute slot.

Do not build the evening on unpublished times. The times we use are those of Sydney Tourism: 9 p.m. and midnight. The ceremonies announced before 9 p.m. by third-party sites are not confirmed. Wait for the official programme before you pencil in a time in your plans.

Islands must be booked in advance. As of 22 October, five paid NSW National Parks sites were full. The ferry costs €47.71 per adult or child, and gates open at 5 p.m. If you are aiming for an island, check availability on the official site on the day, and do not build your evening on a place that is not confirmed.

Plan the evening return. With more than a million spectators expected, check the official information on transport for the day and keep a backup plan.

Mistakes to avoid. Booking on the price shown at the top of the listing, which can mix options and different slots. Forgetting that a private tour may not state a departure point. Planning an excursion out of town on a day when you must be at the harbour in the afternoon. Not rechecking availability before you pay, although slots move between the check and your booking.

Depending on your profile. As a couple, the private tour and the jet boat make sense if you want exclusivity or a thrill. With children, we did not check the age restrictions of each listing: check them before booking. Small budget: the SCG behind-the-scenes tour at €22.28 per adult and the pearl farm from €29.29 remain the two lowest fares on the list. For a first visit to Sydney, the 3.5-hour walking tour gives you the bearings of the centre and the harbour. Reduced mobility: accessibility was not checked for the eight listings, ask the operator before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best rated tour for 31 December in Sydney?

The 3.5-hour small-group walking tour, rated 4.97 out of 5 across 658 reviews at the 22 October check. It is open on 31 December, with two slots out of three. An expert guide leads the group, twelve people at most, from The Rocks to The Squire’s Landing, facing the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. See the listing.

Can you see the fireworks from one of these experiences?

No, not as a reserved place. None of the eight experiences sells a place for the 9 p.m. or midnight show, and this article does not suggest it. They take place before the fireworks or during the day. For times, the evening and the official viewpoints, refer to the Sydney Tourism and NSW National Parks pages cited in the sources.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner cruise on Viator?

Not in this selection. Dinner cruises and fireworks cruises found for the 31st do not meet our criteria, which require a rating of at least 4.7 out of 5 and at least 100 reviews. We therefore do not recommend them. If you are looking for one, check directly with the operator what is included and what time the boat returns to the quay.

Are the 31 December slots still available?

At the 22 October 2026 check, half of the eight experiences have only one or two options open on 31 December: the jet boat (2 of 9), the private tour (1 of 2), the walking tour (2 of 3) and the SCG behind-the-scenes tour (2 of 5). Book these products first. The bonus snorkelling has only one slot open that day. Availability changes from one day to the next: reread the listing before you pay.

How much does a day of activities in Sydney cost on 31 December?

The prices checked for 31 December range from €22.28 to €342.23 per adult, based on two travelers. The cheapest is the Sydney Cricket Ground behind-the-scenes tour. The most expensive is the food tour in its private option, the only option open that evening. What is included varies from one listing to another: free transfers for the helicopter, vehicle and water for the private tour, six tastings for the food tour, all-inclusive package for the Blue Mountains. Read the inclusions line of each listing before you pay.

What is still open on 1 January?

Three of the eight experiences have no slot left on 1 January at the check: the Broken Bay pearl farm, the SCG behind-the-scenes tour and the walking tour. The Manly snorkelling, a bonus experience, is also closed that day. The other five remain open: the helicopter, the jet boat, the Blue Mountains, the private tour and the food tour.
