The Krakow Christmas Market 2026 opens on Friday 27 November 2026 on the Rynek Główny and is due to close on 6 January 2027, a provisional date. Entry is free, the chalets open from 10am to 8pm, and the nativity crib contest takes place on Thursday 3 December 2026.

Checked on against the official sources cited (Visit Kraków, Muzeum Krakowa, ARTIM offer document).

The Krakow Christmas market is one of the most visited markets in Europe in December. It fills the Rynek Główny, the big square of the Old Town. To plan a visit, you mostly need the exact dates, the prices we could check, the transport fares and a few rules that change from one year to the next. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is still provisional, and dates every check. To compare with other cities, the European Christmas markets guide 2026 covers the main destinations.

1. The Rynek Główny, the market’s setting

The market takes over part of the Rynek Główny, where the Sukiennice, the Cloth Hall, stands in the middle. According to marches-de-noel.fr, the chalets line the side of the Town Hall tower. Kraków Główny station is within walking distance of the centre; we did not time the walk.

Highlights

  • Polish crafts: blown glass, embroidery, wooden toys, leather and jewellery, including amber
  • Street food: smoked and grilled oscypek, pierogi, kiełbasa, zapiekanka, gingerbread
  • Mulled wine (grzane wino) and grzaniec galicyjski, the mulled wine served in a big mug
  • Traditional Krakow nativity cribs, the szopki, built like small coloured castles
Our tip: ask for the total price before you order. In the 2024 season, visitors complained about prices shown per 100 g rather than per portion. A two-course meal can go over budget fast if you don’t compare.

If you want to taste Polish cooking with a guide, the food tour below runs in Krakow. The Viator listing checked on 23 October 2026 shows a rate on 35 of the 41 days between 27 November 2026 and 6 January 2027, and six dates were rechecked one by one. Time slots are confirmed at booking.

2. 2026-2027 dates: what is confirmed and what isn’t

The 27 November 2026 opening is announced by Visit Kraków and by the ARTIM offer document, hosted on kk.krakow.pl. Both sources give 6 January 2027 as the provisional closing date. Other sites mention 3 January, 26 December or 1 January. The 1 January date belongs to the 2025-2026 season and should not be used for this one.

The table below lists the dates to keep, with their level of certainty as of 23 October 2026.

Outside the Rynek Główny, only the small IMAGO craft fair is announced for 2026, with conflicting dates: 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 according to the organiser, 6 January according to a third-party guide. The venue is not confirmed.

For the opening ceremony, no date had been published at our check on 23 October 2026. In 2025 the market opened on 28 November and the official opening took place on Saturday 29 November, according to the PAP news agency.

3. Prices: dated checks, never an official price list

The sources we checked publish no official price list for the chalets. The only figures come from press reports and guides, each dated to its season. In January 2025, the Polish news site Super Biznes reported a tourist who paid 354.90 zł for two dishes, including a ketchup charged at 5 zł.

For a hot dish, the 2025 checks range from 35 zł (żurek with a small mulled wine) to 45 zł (maczanka, drink not specified). These figures date from 2025 and are not guaranteed for 2026. Always ask for the total price before you order.

4. Getting around: the 2026 MPK fares

Kraków’s public transport operator (MPK) has applied the fares set by city ordinance no. 425/2026 since 2 March 2026. A copy of the text is hosted on kk.krakow.pl, the website of a traders’ association. We did not read the version published by the City itself, which still needs checking on bip.krakow.pl. The most useful ticket for a day of sightseeing is the 24-hour ticket: 20 zł for zone I, 25 zł for zones I to III.

For the airport transfer, the fare, ticket validity and zones have not been checked for 2026. Check with the operator or the timetable before your flight.

5. The nativity crib contest: 3 December 2026 at 10am

The szopki contest is the most unusual event on the calendar. Run by the Muzeum Krakowa, it is in its 84th edition in 2026 and takes place on Thursday 3 December at 10am. It usually falls on the first Thursday of December: the 2025 edition was announced for Thursday 4 December (krakowbooking.fr, November 2025).

The szopki are nativity cribs built in the shape of small coloured castles. According to Radio Kraków, the tradition is on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.

The contest is held on the market square. The exact spot had not been published at our check on 23 October 2026. Arrive a few minutes before 10am if you want to see the cribs up close.

6. Alcohol, discounts and entry formalities: three rules to know

Late-night alcohol sales

Shops have been barred from selling alcohol between midnight and 5:30 am since 1 July 2023. According to RMF24 (9 July 2026), an extension to the 10pm to 6am window has been adopted, announced for 1 September 2026. We could not verify its entry into force in the municipal register. Check before you count on a late purchase, especially for bottles to take away.

Karta Krakowska: 20% off for cardholders

According to the ARTIM offer, Karta Krakowska holders get 20% off food and non-alcoholic drinks at the participating stalls on the Rynek market, from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. A 5 zł carousel ride is planned for registered children. The discount is reserved for cardholders, and we did not verify the conditions for getting the card.

Entry formalities for UK travellers

British passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays in Poland, which is in the Schengen area. The limit is 90 days in any 180-day period, and days spent in other Schengen countries count toward it. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before your arrival, and it must be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, according to the UK government’s travel advice for Poland.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. It does not apply to EU citizens, but it does apply to British travellers: on first entry, your fingerprints and a photo are taken at the border, and the registration is free. ETIAS, the online travel authorisation, is not yet in force, and the EU has not announced a firm start date. Check the official pages before you travel.

7. Indicative budget for one day

The market itself is free. The table adds up prices checked on different dates: treat it as a benchmark, not a quote.

Source: MPK fares (ordinance no. 425/2026), Super Biznes and marches-de-noel.fr, checked on 23 October 2026.

A day with the 24-hour ticket and a żurek with its small mulled wine comes to about 55 zł (20 + 35). With a maczanka and no drink, the total is about 65 zł (20 + 45). The price check does not say whether a drink is included. Each extra mulled wine adds about 18 zł. This estimate leaves out craft purchases and paid activities, and it relies on 2024 and 2025 prices.

To cut costs, use three levers: the 24-hour ticket rather than single rides, the Karta Krakowska if you qualify, and asking for the total price before every order.

8. Planning your day at the market

Check the stall hours. The chalets open from 10am to 8pm, and food service can run until 10pm according to Visit Kraków. Each stall’s hours may differ, so check on the spot.

Pick your slot for the contest. If you want to see the szopki, the contest takes place on Thursday 3 December 2026 at 10am, on the market square. The exact spot had not been published at our check.

Ask for the total price and carry some cash. Some stalls price by 100 g, and most accept cards according to one traveller’s account. Keep some cash for small purchases anyway.

Extend your visit into the city. The market alone does not fill a full day. The three-day itinerary in section 11 covers the rest of the city beyond the Rynek.

9. Depending on your travel style

Families

Entry to the market is free, and the nativity contest at 10am on 3 December is a highlight to fit into your day. The ARTIM offer includes a 5 zł carousel ride for children registered on the Karta Krakowska. It does not apply to other children.

Tight budget

With free entry, the budget mostly comes down to transport and food. Allow 20 zł for the 24-hour ticket and 35 to 45 zł for a hot dish, based on 2025 checks. A case reported in the press in January 2025 (354.90 zł for two dishes) shows why you should ask for the total price before you order.

First time in Krakow

Give half a day to the Rynek and the Old Town. If your dates allow, the szopki contest on 3 December is a unique addition to the plan. For a longer stay, the three-day itinerary covers the rest of the city.

Reduced mobility

We have not checked the accessibility of the market or its surroundings. Ask the tourist office before you go.

10. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the market ends on 1 January. That date belongs to the previous season. For 2026-2027, the closing date is provisionally 6 January 2027.
  • Ordering without asking for the total price. Prices are sometimes quoted per 100 g, and portions can be a surprise.
  • Counting on the 20% discount without a card. The ARTIM offer is reserved for Karta Krakowska holders.
  • Looking for a market in Kazimierz or on Plac Nowy. No 2026 market is confirmed there. Outside the Rynek Główny, only the IMAGO craft fair is announced, with conflicting dates.

What other guides don’t tell you

These four points appear in the official or press sources cited, and most are missing from the guides we compared.

  • The season doesn’t end on 1 January. Visit Kraków and the ARTIM offer give 6 January 2027 as a provisional date (Visit Kraków, consulted on 23 October 2026).
  • The nativity contest has a set edition and date. The 84th edition takes place on Thursday 3 December 2026 at 10am, run by the Muzeum Krakowa (Muzeum Krakowa, consulted on 23 October 2026).
  • Karta Krakowska holders get 20% off. On food and non-alcoholic drinks at the participating Rynek stalls, from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 (ARTIM offer, consulted on 23 October 2026).
  • An extension of late-night alcohol sales has been announced. It was planned for 1 September 2026. We could not verify its entry into force in the municipal register (RMF24, 9 July 2026, consulted on 23 October 2026).

11. Extending your stay in Krakow

The market is not enough to fill a multi-day stay. The three-day Krakow itinerary organises the city. For an excursion, the winter day trips from Krakow cover Wieliczka and Auschwitz, among others, out of season.

To compare with other European markets this season, the European Christmas markets guide 2026 covers dates and tips for the main cities.
