The 2026 Christkindlmarket in Chicago opens Friday, November 20, 2026 at three sites, and entry is free. Daley Plaza and Aurora close December 24, 2026, Wrigleyville on December 31. Daley Plaza is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Checked on against the organizers’ announcement relayed by NBC Chicago on August 20, 2026, cross-checked with ChooseChicago.

Chicago’s German-style Christmas market has three sites this year, and they don’t all close on the same day. Daley Plaza, in the Loop, is still the busiest. Wrigleyville runs until December 31 and opens later on weekdays. Aurora, in the western suburbs, charges $3 to $10 for parking (2024-2025 rates) and is reachable by Metra. This guide helps you choose a site, plan your budget and read the 2025 prices for what they are: benchmarks, not this year’s rates.

2026 dates and hours by site

All three sites open on the same day, Friday, November 20, 2026. Their closing dates differ. The table lists the hours announced for the season, day by day for the periods that matter.

Three details change a visit. First, Wrigleyville doesn’t open until 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday, except December 21 to 23 and 28 to 30: outside the holiday weeks, if you arrive at noon on a Tuesday, you’ll find the site closed. Next, Aurora only runs Thursday through Sunday. Finally, during those six days at the end of December, Wrigleyville opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m., including Monday to Thursday. It is the only one of the three sites still open after December 24.

Daley Plaza is the market’s historic site. According to English Wikipedia, the market has been held there since 1997. It sits in the heart of the Loop, and it is the densest of the three sites: reviews of the 2025 season describe it as the busiest. Friday and Saturday evenings, and the week before Christmas, are the most crowded times, according to Little Chicago Guide.

Highlights

  • The busiest of the three sites according to 2025 season reviews, in the heart of the Loop.
  • Direct access: the Blue Line, Washington stop, is about a one-minute walk away.
  • Last day December 24, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site then closes for the year.
Pixidia tip: for a lighter crowd, aim for a Tuesday to Thursday between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Little Chicago Guide describes these slots as the calmest of the 2025 season, an author’s opinion.

For a guided walking tour, the card below links to an existing offer: read the details on the listing before you book. The market itself is free and can be visited without a ticket.

Wrigleyville: the quieter option, with later weekday hours

The Wrigleyville site is called Gallagher Way. It sits at 3635 North Clark Street, in the neighborhood around Wrigley Field. NBC Chicago announces 28 vendors for 2026. It is the only one of the three sites that stays open on December 31, until 4 p.m. that day.

The hours are staggered. The market opens at 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday, except December 21 to 23 and 28 to 30, when it opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. On Friday and Saturday it opens at 11 a.m. (until 9 p.m.); on Sunday, at 11 a.m. (until 7 p.m.). Some aggregators publish estimated hours for this site, which are not confirmed.

Little Chicago Guide describes Wrigleyville as less crowded than Daley Plaza, an author’s view recorded for the 2025 season. Access is by the Red Line, Addison stop, according to Little Chicago Guide, 2025. Several parking lots are nearby, with no rate recorded at the date of consultation.

Aurora: Thursday to Sunday, paid parking and Metra access

RiverEdge Park is at 360 North Broadway, on the bank of the Fox River, in the western suburban city of Aurora, about forty miles from Chicago according to Little Chicago Guide. NBC Chicago announces more than 60 vendors. The market runs Thursday to Sunday: Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Without a car, Metra’s BNSF line stops at Aurora station, about three minutes’ walk from the park. Pace bus 524 or 530 serves the Aurora Transportation Center stop, at the same distance (RTA, 2025 extract).

By car, two lots are documented for 2024-2025. The Aurora Transportation Center lot, at 233 North Broadway, costs $10. The lot at 130 North Lincoln Avenue costs $3 and connects to the park through a pedestrian tunnel under the tracks. 2026 rates are not published at the date of consultation.

Budget: entry is free, the spending happens at the stalls

Entry costs nothing at any of the three sites. The real spending goes on mulled wine, food and the mug, which remains the market’s signature souvenir. The prices on record date from 2025 (drinks, mug) and 2024-2025 (Aurora parking): treat them as a rough guide, not this year’s rates.

In 2025, Glühwein sold for $11 to $13, and the boot-shaped mug carried a $7 deposit. A first mulled wine with its mug therefore came to $18 to $20 at 2025 prices. If you return the mug, you get the deposit back; if you keep it, the $7 stays in your total.

Little Chicago Guide estimates $30 to $35 per person for a light meal of a Glühwein, a bratwurst, a pretzel and roasted almonds, and $40 to $50 to sample several products. This is the author’s estimate, with no precise collection date.

For Daley Plaza, the Blue Line to the Washington stop is the simplest option. From Metra’s Union Station there is no direct walking link: take CTA bus 60 or 157 to Washington or Clark/Dearborn, then walk about three minutes. By car, Daley Plaza parking is in the Millennium Park garage, according to Little Chicago Guide (2025); its rate was not recorded at the date of consultation.

Weather: cold that you feel most in the evening

NWS Chicago’s 1991-2020 normals for O’Hare Airport give an average November high of 48.4°F (9.1°C) and low of 34.2°F (1.2°C). In December, the average high drops to 36.7°F (2.6°C) and the low to 24.4°F (−4.2°C). The month brings on average 2.1 inches (54 mm) of precipitation and 7.5 inches (19 cm) of snow. These are averages: the lake wind and the evening hours make it feel harsher than the numbers suggest.

Pack gloves, a hat and a windproof layer, especially if you’ll be standing in line for the stalls.

Visitor limit: what happened in 2025, what is unknown for 2026

In 2025, the City of Chicago set a limit of 1,553 people at one time, according to CBS Chicago. On December 1, 2025, it approved an increase of 1,000 people; the final figure was not published. According to the organizers, a limit of 2,500 people in the long run would drive away many vendors, and many of them come from Germany every year.

Normally, according to ABC7 Chicago, the organizers cite 4,000 to 5,000 visitors, with tight crowds the week before Christmas. ABC7 also mentions a limit of about 1,000 people, a figure that does not match CBS’s.

Where the name comes from: an 1678 inscription, not 1628

The Chicago market follows the model of Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt, with its wooden stalls, pretzels, bratwurst, roasted almonds and mulled wine. The City of Nuremberg, in a press release dated October 23, 2025, notes that a wooden box held at the Germanic Museum bears the oldest known inscription of the name « Kindlesmarck », dated 1678. Municipal research ruled out the date 1628. Nuremberg is therefore marking its 350th anniversary in 2028, not a 400th.

The press release refers to the oldest known mention of the name, not to the market’s founding date. In Chicago, the first edition took place in 1996 at Pioneer Court, before the move to Daley Plaza in 1997, according to English Wikipedia. For the history of the original market, read our guide to the Nuremberg Christmas Market 2026.

What other guides don’t tell you

Several online guides repeat estimated hours or 2025 dates. Here is what the dated announcements let us state as of October 25, 2026.

  • Wrigleyville opens at 3 p.m. on weekdays outside the holiday period, not at 11 a.m. Some aggregators publish estimated hours for this site, which are not confirmed. According to NBC Chicago (consulted October 25, 2026).
  • Daley Plaza and Aurora close December 24, 2026; Wrigleyville closes on the 31st. One aggregator gives an end date of January 3, 2027, and a 2025 listing gave December 25. According to ChooseChicago, 2026 guide and NBC Chicago (consulted October 25, 2026).
  • The 2025 limit was 1,553 people, not 1,000. Several articles mention a limit without a figure, and ABC7 suggests about 1,000. According to CBS Chicago (article of December 1, 2025, consulted October 25, 2026).
  • Nuremberg’s recognized origin is 1678, not 1628. Guides keep repeating « 400 years. » According to the City of Nuremberg, press release of October 23, 2025 (consulted October 25, 2026).
  • On November 26, December 24 and December 31, the sites that are open close at 4 p.m. An unofficial site lists extended hours until 10 p.m. on December 19 and 20, without confirmation. According to NBC Chicago (consulted October 25, 2026).

A sample plan, day by day

For a first visit, start at Daley Plaza in the late afternoon. In December, between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., the light fades and the setting lends itself to photos, according to Little Chicago Guide. Stay until dark, then walk to Millennium Park to see the city’s tree, up from November 20, 2026 to January 10, 2027, according to ChooseChicago.

If you book the guided walking tour, check the start time on the listing: slots change by date, and the tour does not run every day of the season.

For two days, combine a weekday evening at Daley Plaza, a weekday afternoon at Wrigleyville from 3 p.m. (from 11 a.m. on December 21 to 23 and 28 to 30) and, if you have a car, a trip to Aurora from Thursday to Sunday. If you are comparing with the other European Christmas markets of the season, our complete guide to Christmas markets in Europe 2026 puts them side by side.

Around the market, ChooseChicago lists several light displays for the 2026-2027 season:

  • Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Garden, November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
  • ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo, November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, free on Mondays.
  • Magnificent Mile Lights, on November 21, 2026.

Source: ChooseChicago, holiday lights and Christmas displays 2026-2027, consulted October 25, 2026. These dates may change.

Depending on your profile

  • With family. The activities are concentrated mostly on weekend afternoons, according to Little Chicago Guide. For kids, ZooLights is free on Mondays.
  • As a couple. Photos look best at dusk. Save the mulled wine for the end of the visit, when the cold sets in.
  • On a tight budget. Entry is free, but the deposit mug and drinks make up the total. Set a spending limit per stall before you start.
  • For a first visit. Daley Plaza is the busiest and densest of the three sites, on the Blue Line (Washington stop, one minute’s walk). Save Wrigleyville for a weekday from 3 p.m., or for the late-December days when it opens at 11 a.m.
  • With reduced mobility. For all three sites, accessibility information does not appear in the sources consulted: ask the organizers before you go.

Five mistakes to avoid

  • Heading to Wrigleyville at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday outside the holiday period. The site opens at 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday, except December 21 to 23 and 28 to 30.
  • Going to Daley Plaza on December 31. The site closes on December 24; only Wrigleyville stays open that day.
  • Taking 2025 prices for 2026. Mug and drink prices for 2026 are not published; the documented figures date from 2025.
  • Buying a skip-the-line pass assuming it still exists. The $25 weekend fast pass is documented for 2023. No 2025 or 2026 source confirms it (Hoodline, October 2023).
  • Going to Aurora without planning for parking. The Broadway lot costs $10; the Lincoln lot, at $3, requires a walk through the tunnel.
