Advent Zagreb 2026 runs from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027 in the historic centre. The organiser confirms these dates. According to guides, entry to the market is free, but food and activities cost money. The 2026 opening hours are not yet published, so budget with the prices recorded in December 2025.

Checked on against the official sources cited (the organiser’s site, the TZGZ funding decision, the European Commission).

Is a weekend at Zagreb’s Advent worth the trip, compared with Europe’s big Christmas markets? Advent Zagreb lasts six weeks and is not one single market. It spreads across the lower town, the upper town (Gornji grad) and several neighbourhoods, with a large ice rink, wooden chalets, illuminations and food stalls. This article answers three questions: when and where, how much it costs, and how to spend two days there.

To answer the opening question: the research gives no ranking between markets, but it gives the elements to choose with. The organiser speaks of « more than twenty venues », the centre is walkable, entry is free according to guides, and the direct flight from Paris takes about 1 hour 55 minutes. The clearest price reference remains mulled wine, at about €4 in December 2025 according to the press. We have no price comparison with Vienna or Prague: no 2026 comparison was made for this article. The debate exists too: an index.hr article of 4 January 2026 asks whether the 2025 edition was weaker than 2024 (the headline is in Croatian, translated by us). It asks the question without answering it with a figure.

Every figure carries its date of record. When a price is not published for 2026, we say so and give the last known price. To compare with other cities, read our guide to the best Christmas markets in Europe 2026. You can also compare with Prague and Vienna.

Ban Jelačić Square and Europski trg: the heart of Advent

Free entry, according to guides 28 November to 7 January All on foot Evening atmosphere

Ban Jelačić Square, in the lower town, is the most visible entry point to Advent. It hosts the food market and the chalets, and the neighbouring Europski trg is one of the sites co-financed by the TZGZ for 2026. The TZGZ co-financing resolution lists the venues for the 2026 edition.

The market does not stop at that square. The official list also covers the Gradec plateau in the upper town, Strossmayer promenade, Zrinjevac park and Strossmayer Square, where most food stalls are concentrated according to guides. These sites are reached on foot, over roughly 1 to 2 km.

To discover the historic centre before the evening crowds, a guided walking tour is one option. The Viator listing, checked on 16 October 2026, describes a small group (16 people maximum): the old town, the World War II tunnels, the funicular and tastings, over two hours. At least two people are needed per booking. The calendar checked the same day shows 31 of the 41 Advent days with bookable slots. The departure time is on the Viator listing: check it, like the date you choose, before you book.

Highlights

  • Free entry to the squares, according to guides: your spending goes on food and activities.
  • A centre you can walk around, except for the slopes of the upper town.
  • Illuminations mentioned in most guides, which give the centre its evening atmosphere.
Pixidia tip: to avoid the crowds, visit the squares on a weekday afternoon. Guides repeat this advice, but no published measure confirms it. Friday and Saturday evenings remain the busiest, according to the same sources.

Food and mulled wine: the prices recorded

Mulled wine: about €4 Mains: €5.50 to €9 Free entry, according to guides

The price comparison published by tportal.hr on 14 December 2025 records, in Zagreb, a mulled wine at about €4, fritule (small fried doughnuts) between €5 and €11, and traditional mains between €5.50 and €9. A guide published in 2026 gives mulled wine at €3 and skating at €5 an hour, skates included. That figure is undated and differs from the press survey: treat it as an indication, not as a price.

Entry to the market is free, according to guides. What costs money is what you consume, the activities and the ice rink. Tickets published by Croatian Railways (HŽ) for the combined train and Advent offer were €2.50 and €3.50 in 2025. No 2026 ice rink price had been published at the time of writing.

Highlights

  • Mulled wine is the best price reference: its press survey is the clearest one.
  • Santa’s sleigh cost €15 for an adult and €8 for a child in 2025.
Pixidia tip: cards are accepted at most stalls, according to one guide. Keep some cash for small purchases anyway.

Accommodation and tourist tax

No 2026 rate checked Tax: €1.86 December Per night

No 2026 accommodation rate was checked for this article. An undated Skyscanner page, covering 4-star hotels only, shows about €99 a night on average and €133 in December. That is neither a 3-star rate nor a 2026 rate: check the prices for your dates before you budget a night.

The tourist tax is added to the room price. It has been €1.86 per person per night since 1 January 2026, and €1.06 at campsites, under the City Assembly decision of 23 January 2025 (press extract, full text not read). Older figures in kuna should not be reused.

Highlights

  • Sights are walkable: a hotel near Ban Jelačić Square limits your evening journeys.
  • Plan for the Christmas weekend: 25 and 26 December 2026 are public holidays (Friday and Saturday), which makes a long weekend up to Sunday 27.
Pixidia tip: compare the total price, tax included, and check whether breakfast is included. The displayed price is not always the final price: compare it with what is included.

3. A typical weekend, from Friday evening to Sunday

As 2026 opening hours are not published, this sequence is a suggested order, not a timetable. It starts in the centre, then moves to the upper town and the other sites in the afternoon.

Friday evening: arrival, Ban Jelačić Square and street food

Arrival Street food dinner Evening crowds Night

Start at Ban Jelačić Square, then walk to Strossmayer Square, where most food stalls are concentrated according to guides. One guide counts sixteen outlets on that site, including street food stalls. The source does not date this count, so check it on the spot.

No official source we read publishes stall opening hours. A guide published in 2023 gives 11 am to 11 pm on weekdays, and until 1 am on Friday and Saturday: do not repeat these figures without checking them. According to guides, Friday evening is one of the busiest times in the centre.

Saturday: upper town, Dolac market and the ice rink

Gornji grad Local produce Ice rink Crafts

On Saturday morning, climb to the upper town (Gornji grad) by the sloping streets, up to the Gradec plateau, which is on the TZGZ list for 2026. This is the part of the centre where the slope is steepest. Then come back down through Dolac market: guides cite štrukli (cheese pastry), kobasice (grilled sausages) and paprenjaci (pepper and honey biscuits) among the local specialities, without saying where to try them.

In the afternoon, the ice rink on King Tomislav Square is the site with the largest budget in Advent: its co-financing ceiling is €50,000 for 2026. Finish at Zrinjevac park, where the craft stalls, the music and the illuminations are. Saturday is among the busiest days according to guides, with no published measure. If you can choose, go to the ice rink and Zrinjevac on a weekday afternoon.

Pixidia tip: buy your specialities and your mulled wine on the way back rather than on arrival, so your hands are free for the ice rink.

Sunday: Grič tunnel and the way home

Free afternoon Short walk Return Morning

On Sunday morning, visit the Grič tunnel, an underground network below the upper town. One guide gives opening hours of 9 am to 10 pm, with no date and no official source, and says entry is free: check both points before you go. We did not check its accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

For the afternoon, no museum was checked in this research. Year-end closures are only recorded in sources from 2014 to 2020, so reconfirm the opening hours on each venue’s website. A day trip to Plitvice, where winter entry costs €10 in 2025-2026, is best planned separately, outside this weekend: its duration and transport were not checked.

Highlights

  • A short morning, which leaves time for the journey home without rushing.
  • A simple journey home: Partir.com lists one direct flight a day from Paris all year. For London, check the season (see section 5).

4. By traveller: family, couple, small budget

The same centre is seen differently depending on who you travel with. The suggestions below reuse the figures in this article and propose no unchecked opening hours.

Families

Children will mostly enjoy the ice rink and Santa’s sleigh, which cost €8 for a child in 2025. Plan a warm break between activities, as most attractions are outdoors. The Gradec plateau in the upper town offers a shorter walk, with slopes to plan for if you are pushing a buggy.

Couples

On Saturday evening, have dinner in a restaurant in the centre rather than at the stalls: one guide cites a menu at €18 in 2026, an unverified figure that only gives a rough idea. End the evening at Strossmayer Square, where guides say the food stalls stay open late.

Small budget

Entry to the market is free, and mulled wine, at about €4 in December 2025, remains the safest reference. Traditional mains recorded by the press cost €5.50 to €9. As an indication, two mulled wines and two mains at press prices come to €19 to €26 for two people. Compare accommodation with the €1.86 per person, per night tourist tax in mind.

First visit

Start at Ban Jelačić Square to get your bearings, then follow the walking route in section 3. A guided walking tour, two hours according to the Viator listing, gives a first historical overview, especially if you do not know the city. It is booked online, for a date when the calendar is open.

5. Getting to Zagreb from the UK and from Paris

The direct flight is the simplest option from Paris. From London, we could not confirm a direct route for winter 2026-2027. Airline schedules change every season: British Airways, for example, paused its Heathrow service over winter 2025-2026. Check the airlines before you compare fares.

We have not checked routes from Lyon or Brussels for winter 2026-2027. A low-cost route from Beauvais, announced for summer 2026, is not confirmed for this winter. Check the airlines directly before comparing. The shuttle fare from Pleso airport is not confirmed either, so it is not included here.

Zagreb is in the Schengen area. British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before your arrival and must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. On your first entry you may be asked to register your fingerprints and a photo under the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which is free. The GOV.UK Croatia entry requirements page, checked 16 October 2026, does not mention ETIAS, so we give no date for it: check the page again before you travel.

What other guides don’t tell you

Several guides, some of them cited in answers generated by search engines, contradict each other on dates or reuse old data. Here are six points checked against an official source or against the original source, all consulted on 16 October 2026.

  • The official dates are 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027. Some guides announce an opening on 29 November and an end on 6 January, and croatietourisme.com presents the 2024-2025 dates as « this year’s ». Advent Zagreb official site (checked 16 October 2026).
  • The official 2026 list of venues does not include St Mark’s Square. Some texts present this upper-town square as an Advent site, but the TZGZ does not keep it for 2026. TZGZ resolution of 27 April 2026 (checked 16 October 2026).
  • The ice rink has the highest co-financing ceiling. Out of a €203,000 envelope for 2026, the King Tomislav Square site is capped at €50,000. The guides we read also describe a large ice rink, without giving this budget. TZGZ, 27 April 2026 (checked 16 October 2026).
  • The tourist tax has been €1.86 per person per night since 2026. It is €1.06 at campsites. Some pages still show prices in kuna, which points to old content. City Assembly decision of 23 January 2025, press extract (checked 16 October 2026).
  • No 2026 opening hours are published. In 2025, the opening ceremony took place at 4:30 pm at Manduševac, with the ice rink opening at 6:30 pm. One guide announces 5:30 pm on 29 November 2026, which contradicts the official date of 28 November and is not verified. index.hr, 26 November 2025 (checked 16 October 2026).
  • Prices in kuna are out of date. Zagreb has used the euro since 1 January 2023, at the conversion rate of 7.53450 kuna. One museum page still shows prices in kuna, with no date recorded: this figure should not be used as a reference. European Commission (checked 16 October 2026).

6. Practical information before you go

  • Entry: free on the squares, according to two guides (2025 and 2026). The official page we read does not detail this point: reconfirm it.
  • Public holidays: 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January. Museum closures on these dates are reported by sources from 2014 to 2020: confirm each opening time.
  • Crowds: the centre is very busy on Friday and Saturday evenings. A testimony relayed by a guide reports stalls closed around 31 December and 1 January, which the organiser does not confirm.
  • Accessibility: the centre is flat, except the upper town. The City’s accessibility service, pristupacni.zagreb.hr, lists accessible places. Ramps were announced in 2019, with no confirmation for 2026.
  • Safety: Canadian and US travel advice warns about pickpocketing in crowded places. We found no official Croatian advice about Advent.

Frequently asked questions about Advent in Zagreb

When does Advent in Zagreb start in 2026?

Advent Zagreb 2026 opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 and ends on Thursday 7 January 2027, according to the organiser’s official site. Both dates are confirmed. Some guides announce an opening on 29 November or an end on 6 January: these differences do not come from the organiser. The set-up of stalls would start around 25 November, according to the local press.

What are the opening hours of Advent in Zagreb?

The 2026 opening hours are not published on the official site, which we checked on 16 October 2026. In 2025, the opening ceremony took place at 4:30 pm, according to index.hr.

Is entry to the market free?

Yes, according to two guides, one published in 2025 and the other in 2026. However, food, drinks, mulled wine and activities cost money, such as the ice rink or Santa’s sleigh, which cost €15 for an adult in 2025. The official page we read does not detail this point: treat it as guide information and reconfirm it.

How much does a mulled wine cost at Advent in Zagreb?

In December 2025, a press survey records about €4 for a mulled wine (kuhano vino) in Zagreb. The same survey gives €5 to €11 for fritule. A guide published in 2026 gives mulled wine at €3, but that figure is undated and not confirmed by the organiser. For your budget, keep about €4 and check the price on the spot.

Is there a fireworks display on 31 December in Zagreb?

No official announcement was found on 16 October 2026, either on the organiser’s site or in the press we read. A fireworks display therefore remains a hypothesis. For New Year’s Eve, plan a backup: a testimony relayed by a guide reports stalls closed around 31 December, without confirmation.
