From the 2027 vignette year, Austria’s vignette exists only in digital form, linked to your number plate and country. You buy it online at shop.asfinag.at or on the spot, for €9.60 (one day) to €106.80 (annual) for a car, based on 2026 prices. The 2026 sticker stays valid until 31 January 2027 if it is stuck on the windscreen.

Checked on against the sources cited (ASFINAG and oesterreich.gv.at as official sources; Austria Tourism and ÖAMTC as secondary sources).

In Austria, the windscreen sticker has only a few months left. From the 2027 vignette year, the vignette exists only in digital form: it is tied to your number plate and your country, and you buy it online or on the spot. Values were checked on 19 October 2026. The 2026 prices come from official sites (oesterreich.gv.at, ASFINAG); amounts marked « secondary source » or « to be confirmed » are flagged as such.

What changes with the 2027 vignette

The reform is set out in the Road Toll Act (BStMG), published in the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt) on 12 December 2025 and in force the following day, text checked on jusline.at.

The two-part system, sticker and digital version, ends with the 2026 vignette year. The Ministry of Infrastructure announced in its press release of 8 October 2025 that the sticker is being replaced by the digital version (BMIMI press release). The digital vignette stays linked to the vehicle’s number plate and country of registration, recorded in the ASFINAG system.

What to remember

  • No sticker to buy for the 2027 year: the 2026 sticker stays valid until 31 January 2027 if it is stuck on the windscreen.
  • A vignette tied to your plate: a wrong entry is not recognised by the cameras.
  • The 2027 price had not been published at the time of checking; prices are indexed every year.
Pixidia tip: if you rent a vehicle, ask the rental company whether the plate is already registered and whether a valid vignette is in place. The official pages we checked do not say who registers the plate of a rental vehicle: do not assume anything.

This tour does not deal with the vignette: it takes you from Salzburg to Hallstatt by minibus, according to Viator, a small-group minivan tour with up to 8 people per vehicle. Viator’s Austria catalogue, checked on 19 October 2026 (196 products), has no product on the vignette or the Grossglockner; tours departing from Heiligenblut and Zell am See could not be verified. We therefore did not find a direct link to recommend; this card points to a well-rated day trip from Salzburg, if your trip goes that way.

What is the deadline to buy the sticker?

It is the question readers ask most often, and the official texts do not give a single date. The Austrian Parliament, at its press conference of 6 November 2025, points to 1 December 2026 (« Ab 1. Dezember 2026 »). ASFINAG, in its press release of 8 October 2025, refers to 1 February 2027 for the validity of the digital version alone. The ministry only announces that the sticker ends in 2027. The texts we checked do not say which of these dates applies to selling the sticker: we will not decide until ASFINAG confirms.

What is established: the 2026 sticker stays valid until 31 January 2027 if it is stuck on the windscreen, and there is no sticker for 2027. To be safe, buy a 2026 sticker before 1 December 2026: that is the earliest date cited. Several commercial sites show a precise deadline. No official source we checked confirms it, so we do not repeat it.

For your trip, the practical rule stays the same: get your vignette before you leave, and allow for the 18-day delay on online purchases of two-month and annual vignettes, explained in the next section.

How to buy the e-vignette, step by step

The same vignette can be bought through several channels. The safest is the official ASFINAG website or app, or ÖAMTC stations. Consumer organisations, including the Arbeiterkammer, warn against unofficial portals: they add service fees and collect personal data. Always check that you are on an official site before entering your plate and your card details.

  1. Note your number plate and country of registration, then re-read the entry character by character: a mistake is not recognised by the cameras.
  2. Choose the duration: one day, ten days, two months or the year, depending on the length of your stay and the number of trips planned.
  3. Buy at shop.asfinag.at, in the ASFINAG app, at an ÖAMTC station, at a point of sale, at a toll booth or at a vending machine.
  4. Check the start date of validity shown. Online, the two-month and annual vignettes only start on the 18th day at the earliest.

The consequence is simple: buying an annual vignette online on the day you leave does not work. If you arrive in Austria the day after buying a two-month or annual vignette online, buy on the spot or take a ten-day vignette online, which is valid immediately.

2026 prices are up by about 2.9% on 2025, an adjustment linked to inflation. They apply to 2026 only: no 2027 price had been published at the date of checking.

The shortest vignette is not always the cheapest in practice. The ten-day costs only €3.20 more than the one-day: as soon as you drive for two days, take it.

Next is the point at which the annual becomes the better deal. Nine separately bought ten-day vignettes cost €115.20, more than the annual at €106.80. Eight cost €102.40, which is less. For motorcycles, the threshold is the same: nine ten-day vignettes (€45.90) exceed the annual at €42.70. The 2026 annual is valid from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027, not for twelve months: the threshold only applies if your trips fall within that window. No period has yet been published for 2027.

Toll sections and tunnels: what the vignette does not cover

Tunnels on the A9, A10, A11, A13 and S16 are charged on top of the vignette. The table below gives the price of a single passage for a car. ASFINAG states that multi-trip cards reduce the cost for repeated passages; check their prices on the official page before buying.

Between the barriers of the same toll section, no extra vignette is required. The exception is the A12 Inntal: ASFINAG states that the sticker is mandatory there. Several guides, including Austria Tourism’s, list Kufstein among the sections « without a vignette ». Go with the ASFINAG version and get a valid vignette before entering the A12.

For a trip to Italy via the Brenner, the €12.50 toll is charged on top of the vignette you will have bought for Austrian motorways. The Italian side falls under a different system, which is not covered here.

Number plate, country and penalties: the mistakes that cost you

The digital vignette is tied to your number plate and your country of registration. A typing error is not a minor detail: the camera does not recognise the vehicle, which is then treated as having no valid vignette. Checks rely on automatic plate recognition, backed by ASFINAG and police checks. Before you pay, make sure the plate and country on record match the vehicle that will pass under the camera exactly.

If the replacement toll is not paid, the administrative procedure can lead to a fine of €300 to €3,000. For a car, the replacement toll rose to €200 on 1 January 2026, according to ASFINAG’s press release of 13 January 2026. Several guides still quote €120: that is no longer the 2026 amount.

To correct a mistake, act quickly. Before the start date of validity, changing the plate is free according to ÖAMTC. After that date, a change is still possible, with a fee of around €18 according to ÖAMTC. This amount needs to be confirmed in the ASFINAG customer account, which is where the change is made.

Neighbouring countries and toll passes

The Austrian vignette is not valid in other countries. If your route crosses several countries, each has its own system. The table below gives the car prices found, with the source and checking date for each line.

Austrian toll passes are run by separate operators, each with its own prices. No vignette covers them.

Which option for which trip?

The right choice depends on how long you stay, your vehicle and how many trips you make. Here are the most common cases. To explore other destinations, see Pixidia’s English homepage.

  • A weekend or a one-day crossing. The ten-day digital vignette is the right choice: €12.80, valid immediately online. The one-day vignette (€9.60) is enough if you only cross Austria in a single day.
  • A two- to three-week stay by car. Two or three ten-day vignettes (€25.60 to €38.40) stay cheaper than the annual. Buy each vignette when it becomes useful.
  • A road trip or frequent use. Beyond eight ten-day periods, the annual becomes the better deal. To plan the route, our complete guide to the road trip with friends sets out the stages and budget. For a converted van, our guide to van road trips in Europe offers routes and spots: van road trip guide.
  • A motorcycle. The ten-day vignette costs €5.10 and the two-month €12.80. The one-day vignette (€3.80) exists in digital form only. The annual (€42.70) breaks even at nine ten-day periods.
  • A trailer or towing. According to oesterreich.gv.at, a trailer has no vignette of its own. Touring Belgium states that a towing vehicle of 3.5 t or less pays no supplement. For a special case, check with ASFINAG.
  • A rental vehicle. Ask your rental company whether the plate is already registered and whether a valid vignette is in place. The guides we checked do not say.

Budget: three costed scenarios

The amounts below add up the official 2026 prices to give an order of magnitude. They do not replace the price shown at the time of purchase, nor fuel, parking or meals.

With the autumn rate announced at the Grossglockner (€36.50 instead of €46.50), the first scenario drops to €64.30. The motorcycle scenario remains the simplest: a single vignette is enough as long as the route does not pass through a paid tunnel.

What other guides don’t tell you

Two points that online guides handle poorly, checked against official sources, with the date we checked them.

Practical information before you leave

The points below complement the vignette. Check them before you leave, as they cannot be sorted out on the road.

  • Documents. Austria Tourism recommends an ID card or passport, your driving licence, the vehicle registration document and proof of insurance.
  • Buying at the border. Points of sale are reported at border crossings, such as Walserberg or Kufstein Süd, by secondary sources, with no official list found. Digital vignettes bought on the spot are valid immediately: it is a fallback, not a travel plan.
  • Buying online. The official site is shop.asfinag.at. The ASFINAG app and ÖAMTC stations are the other official channels.
  • Switzerland. The Swiss vignette is separate and mandatory on Swiss motorways, according to the BAZG. Do not confuse it with the Austrian vignette.

Frequently asked questions

Is the sticker still valid in 2027?

Yes, on two conditions: you bought it for the 2026 vignette year, and you have stuck it on the windscreen. It remains valid until 31 January 2027, according to the ASFINAG page on the sticker. From the 2027 vignette year, the vignette exists only in digital form, tied to your plate: there is therefore no sticker to buy for 2027.

How much does the 2027 Austrian vignette cost?

The 2027 price had not been published when we checked on 19 October 2026. The 2026 prices serve as a benchmark: €9.60 for one day, €12.80 for ten days, €32.00 for two months and €106.80 for the year, for a car. Prices are indexed to inflation every year, with a rise of about 2.9% in 2026. Check the price shown on shop.asfinag.at before you buy.

Does a motorcycle need a vignette?

Yes. Motorcycles pay a vignette at lower rates: €3.80 for one day, €5.10 for ten days, €12.80 for two months and €42.70 for the year, according to the 2026 rates from Austria Tourism and ÖAMTC. The one-day vignette exists in digital form only. The point at which the annual becomes the better deal is nine ten-day periods.

Can you buy online and drive the same day?

It depends on the duration. The one-day and ten-day vignettes bought online are valid immediately. The two-month and annual vignettes bought online are only valid from the 18th day at the earliest. On the spot, at a point of sale, a toll booth, a vending machine or an ÖAMTC station, all durations are valid immediately, according to ASFINAG.

How much is the fine if you forget the vignette?

The replacement toll for a car has been €200 since 1 January 2026, according to ASFINAG’s press release of 13 January 2026. If it is not paid, the administrative procedure can result in a penalty of €300 to €3,000, according to oesterreich.gv.at. The amount applicable to motorcycles is not given here, as no official confirmation was found. The simplest option is still to buy a valid vignette before you drive.

Are tunnels included in the vignette?

No. The vignette does not cover separate toll sections. In 2026, ASFINAG charges a single passage of €12.00 at the Gleinalm, €7.00 at the Bosruck, €15.00 for the Tauern and Katschberg, €9.00 at the Karawanken, €12.50 at the Brenner and €13.00 at the Arlberg. Between the barriers of the same toll section, no extra vignette is needed, except on the A12 Inntal.

Does a trailer need a vignette?

According to oesterreich.gv.at, trailers are not covered by a vignette of their own. Touring Belgium states that a towing vehicle of 3.5 t or less pays no supplement. For a tow-bar setup or another special case, the pages we checked do not settle every case: confirm with ASFINAG before you leave.

What happens if the plate is entered incorrectly?

A wrongly entered plate or country stops the cameras from recognising the vehicle, which is then treated as having no valid vignette. Correct the error as soon as possible. Before the start date of validity, the change is free according to ÖAMTC. After that, a change fee may apply, around €18 according to ÖAMTC, an amount to be confirmed in the ASFINAG customer account.
