Spain’s Christmas holidays for 2026-2027 start between 22 and 24 December 2026, by region. Departures on 22 December: Catalonia, Galicia, the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands and Aragon. On 23 December: Madrid, Castile and León, the Balearic Islands and Cádiz. On 24 December: the Basque Country and Murcia. Schools go back in stages from Thursday 7 to Monday 11 January 2027.

Checked on against the texts cited. Only one regional text was read, in part (Murcia). Dates taken from the press or from aggregators are flagged in the table.

There is no single Spanish Christmas holiday. Each of the seventeen autonomous communities sets its own school calendar, and Ceuta and Melilla follow their own rules. A departure on 22 December in Catalonia and one on 24 December in the Basque Country are two days apart, and a return on 7 January in Valencia has nothing to do with a return on 11 January in Madrid.

This guide answers three questions: which dates to pick depending on the region, which days are likely to be busiest (a working hypothesis, not a measured figure), and how much a hotel night actually costs. It separates the official texts cited, the ones we read and the ones we could not read, and flags press reports and private estimates. All dates are as of 18 October 2026.

1. Christmas holidays by region

Three dates cover most of it. Departures start on Tuesday 22 December in Catalonia, Galicia, the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands and Aragon, then on Wednesday 23 December in Madrid, Castile and León, the Balearic Islands and Cádiz, and on Thursday 24 December in the Basque Country and Murcia. On the way back, most regions return between Thursday 7 and Friday 8 January 2027, and Madrid and Castile and León on Monday 11 January. Asturias and Navarre also go back on the 11th, but their sources are low confidence.

Source: texts cited in each row; only the Murcia text was read, in part (BORM). Other dates come from the press, a union or aggregators, including vacances-scolaires-gouv.com (updated 18 September 2026), as of 18 October 2026.

Confidence follows a simple scale. « High »: official text read, or two concordant official sources. « Medium-high »: official text cited by a reliable press outlet. « Medium »: press or aggregator in line with an official reference that was not read. « Medium-low »: date from regional press or given as a minimum, matched by a single aggregator. « Low »: a single aggregator, or contradictory sources.

Several regions have dates that diverge. In Andalusia, the end of the holidays varies by province, and the BOJA was not read directly. La Rioja switches between 6 and 8 January, Castilla-La Mancha between 7 and 10, and Cantabria between 8 and 10. For Murcia, the BORM sets 24 December, but an aggregator gives 23 December. For Catalonia, the order cited by 3Cat gives 22 December. These entries should not appear in a travel calendar without that caveat.

2. The December bridge and key dates

The Constitution bridge runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026. It has not happened yet, so book in October or November if you are aiming for that weekend. Sunday 6 and Tuesday 8 are public holidays across the country. Monday 7 is a holiday only in some regions, through a regional transfer. The press counts nine, other sources ten: the count is not settled in the texts we checked. Check the regional calendar for your destination before you book.

The departure wave is spread out, from 22 to 24 December. The return wave is tighter, 7 to 8 January, with Madrid waiting until the 11th.

For readers from the UK, the difference is Boxing Day. In England and Wales, 26 December 2026 is a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, which gives a long weekend from Friday 25 to Monday 28 December. Spain does not follow that break: 25 December is a national holiday on a Friday, but Monday 28 December is not a public holiday in Spain, and Sant Esteve on 26 December falls on a Saturday. 3. Overlap with French school holidays

French schools in zones A, B and C close on Saturday 19 December 2026 and reopen on Monday 4 January 2027. The overlap is wide but not total. A family that leaves on 19 or 20 December gets ahead of the first Spanish wave on the 22nd. On the way back, Spanish pupils return between 7 and 11 January, after French pupils go back on 4 January. From our reading of the dates, the busiest window on roads and at stations falls between 3 and 7 January. That is a working hypothesis: no public source quantifies it. For the French holidays themselves, our guide to Christmas holidays in France: where to go covers the options.

4. Price effect: what is dated and what is not

No open source consulted measures the effect of the overlap on December 2026 fares, or even on December 2025. So no rise is attributed to the overlap here: the percentages below are annual changes reported by their sources, with no established link to the holidays. They are official figures, traffic indicators or a private study, and should be read with their dates.

Hotels: the official average for December 2025

INE publishes the average rate per occupied room, the ADR, every month. For December 2025, provisional figures put it at €120.3 nationally, up 2.5% on a year earlier. The gap between categories is wide. These averages mix cities, periods and types of night: they do not separate the night of the 24th from the night of the 31st.

A study by SiteMinder, cited by the press without a link to the report, puts the average at around €231 a night at Christmas 2025, up 5.58%. Its sample, hotels connected to booking software, is not comparable with the INE’s, and the figure remains a private estimate. No December 2026 rate has been published.

Transport: prices are set at the time of purchase

Renfe uses dynamic pricing. Its page on train getaways advises booking early, without giving a fare, a sale opening date or a discount. We found no 2026-2027 timetable published by Renfe, Iryo or Ouigo. Traffic in the 2025-2026 season gives an order of magnitude.

For flights, The Local reports that Ryanair advises arriving early at the airport because of the queues the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) could create. French demand, meanwhile, fell 8.4% in December 2025, with 707,513 French tourists according to the INE (published 3 February 2026). That decline says nothing about prices: it is a signal, not a conclusion.

Madrid: Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and the lights

Holidays 23 December to 10 January, per the press Campanadas (midnight chimes) on 31 December, in person Day trips from Madrid

According to the specialist press, Madrid breaks up on Wednesday 23 December and returns on Monday 11 January 2027: the holidays cover 19 calendar days, from 23 December to 10 January inclusive. The source is low confidence: the press outlet is not named, an aggregator table contradicts it, and no official text has been read. For the festive season, the capital has the usual highlights: the lights on Gran Vía and Serrano, the Plaza Mayor market, whose 2025 edition ran from 27 November to 31 December according to one source, and the campanadas at Puerta del Sol, which you have to see in person on 31 December. The 2026 lighting dates differ from one guide to the next, so we are not giving them until the city hall confirms them. Our guide to Madrid’s Christmas lights and markets covers the neighbourhoods and nativity scenes.

Highlights

  • Midnight on 31 December at Puerta del Sol, with the twelve grapes ritual
  • A day trip out of the capital during the Three Kings week
Pixidia tip: the Three Kings parade (cabalgata) on 5 January is not confirmed by the city hall at the time of our check. Check the route on the day. For trips out of the capital, our selection of day trips from Madrid lists the options.

Barcelona: the Santa Llúcia fair and Catalan traditions

Holidays 22 December to 7 January Sant Esteve, 26 December, public holiday Barcelona Sants, the busiest station in 2025-2026

Catalonia starts on 22 December and finishes on 7 January, with a return to school on the 8th. Barcelona holds the traditions specific to the region: the Tió de Nadal, a log with a face that receives gifts on the evening of 24 December; the caganer, the little figure tucked into nativity scenes; and the Santa Llúcia fair in front of the cathedral. Our article on the Santa Llúcia fair completes the market guide.

On 26 December, Sant Esteve is a public holiday in Catalonia as in the Balearic Islands: public services close, and some shops close with them. On the train side, Barcelona Sants is the busiest station on the network for 2025-2026, with 2,613 movements according to The Local.

Highlights

  • A Christmas fair in front of the cathedral, in the historic centre
  • Catalan traditions, from the Tió de Nadal to the caganer
Pixidia tip: between 22 December and 7 January, book your trains into the city as soon as your dates are fixed, and leave some slack for the return day.

5. Traditions, cities and weather: what to choose from

Nochebuena, Nochevieja and Reyes

Christmas in Spain comes in three parts. Nochebuena, 24 December, is the family dinner, with seafood, fish, jamón ibérico or roast meat, often after midnight Mass. On 31 December, Nochevieja is marked by the twelve grapes, one for each stroke of midnight. Reyes is the children’s highlight: on the evening of 5 January the cabalgatas (Three Kings parades) roll through with floats and sweets, and on the 6th families share the roscón, a ring-shaped cake with a hidden figurine or bean. In the regions in the table, Reyes week falls during the holidays, so a family trip can take in a cabalgata on the spot.

Cities: reference points, not an itinerary

Renfe cites Seville for its large LED Christmas tree, presented as the largest in Europe: a claim by the railway company, not measured. Granada pairs the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada, but we have not checked whether the 2026 ski season opens. In Andalusia, zambombas, festive songs, accompany the belenes (nativity scenes).

Weather

For a city-by-city forecast, check AEMET, Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, which publishes the official data.

What other guides don’t tell you

Five points, as of 18 October 2026, based on the texts and pages cited.

  • The calendar varies from one region to another, by two days at departure (22 to 24 December) and four on the return (7 to 11 January). Guides often cite « 23 December to 6 January ». The regional texts cited in section 1 give departures from 22 to 24 December and returns from 7 to 11 January. Source: texts cited in the table; only the Murcia text was read, in part. The other dates come from the press, a union or aggregators; see the table.
  • Monday 7 December 2026 is not a public holiday everywhere. The transfer is regional, and the number of regions concerned is not settled: the press counts nine, other sources ten. Source: Spanish press cited in section 2; the BOE text (BOE-A-2025-21667) was not read for this point.
  • An AI assistant’s answer links 22 December to the « official start of the holidays », citing the Christmas lottery draw. Nothing in the texts consulted makes 22 December a national date: each region sets its own start, and 22 December applies to only five of them (section 1). Source: table in section 1; the BOE text was not read on this point.
  • The French school calendar and the Spanish return date overlap. French schools close on 19 December and reopen on 4 January. From our reading of the dates, the busiest window on the roads could fall between 3 and 7 January: a working hypothesis that no public source quantifies. Source: franceinfo, 2026-2027 calendar (last updated 2 December 2025).
  • The « €70 to €120 a night » hotel budget that some guides quote ignores category and date. INE publishes averages by category, detailed in section 4. A range that separates neither category nor date cannot budget a December night. Source: INE, Hotel Tourism Trends, December 2025.

6. Practical information for planning your stay

Three reference points: 25 December, 1 January and 6 January are public holidays across the country, so plan shopping and transfers before those dates. 24 December is a Thursday and not a national public holiday. If your trip crosses a border, the neighbouring school calendar does not necessarily follow Spain’s: our guide to Christmas holidays in Germany 2026-2027 shows the gap with another country.

Frequently asked questions

When do the Christmas holidays start in Spain in 2026?

They start between Tuesday 22 and Thursday 24 December 2026, depending on the region. The 22nd applies to Catalonia, Galicia, the Valencian Community, the Canary Islands and Aragon; the 23rd to Madrid, Castile and León, the Balearic Islands and Cádiz; the 24th to the Basque Country and Murcia. The table in section 1 gives the confidence level of each date.

When do children go back to school after Christmas in Spain?

Between Thursday 7 and Monday 11 January 2027. The Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country and Murcia go back on the 7th; Catalonia, Galicia, the Canary Islands and Extremadura on the 8th; Madrid, Castile and León, Asturias and Navarre on the 11th. For Asturias, Navarre and Extremadura, the source is low confidence: it rests on aggregators.

How long do the Christmas holidays last in Spain?

About two weeks for pupils. In Madrid, according to the press, they run from 23 December to 10 January, which is 19 calendar days, both ends included. In Catalonia, from 22 December to 7 January, which is 17 calendar days, both ends included. These durations do not apply to parents and do not account for days set locally.

What are the public holidays around Christmas in Spain?

Nationally: 6 December (Constitution Day), 8 December (Immaculate Conception), 25 December, 1 January and 6 January (Reyes). In 2026, 6 and 8 December fall on a Sunday and a Tuesday. Monday 7 December and 26 December (Sant Esteve, a public holiday in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands) depend on the region.

When is the December bridge in Spain in 2026?

The Constitution bridge runs from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December 2026. The 6th and 8th are public holidays everywhere, Monday 7 only in some regions. If your stay covers that Monday in a region where it is a holiday, the weekend lasts four days; elsewhere, you have to take a day off.

Do French and Spanish schools have their holidays at the same time?

Their calendars overlap without coinciding. The French holidays for zones A, B and C run from Saturday 19 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January, with a return on Monday 4. The Spanish holidays end between 6 and 10 January depending on the region, and pupils return between 7 and 11 January. From our reading of the dates, a trip back from France could cross the Spanish return between 3 and 7 January: that is a hypothesis, not a figure from any source.

How much does a hotel cost in Spain at Christmas?

In December 2025, the national average rate was €120.3 per occupied room, according to the INE, on provisional figures. It ranged from €93.9 for three-star hotels to €277.5 for five-star. These averages do not separate the nights of the 24th and 31st, or the cities. No official rate has yet been published for December 2026.

Are the Spanish Christmas holidays the same as in 2025?

We have not compared them: the 2025-2026 calendars were not read in this research, and no difference has been quantified. The table in section 1 covers 2026-2027 only. No source we consulted allows a fine-grained year-on-year comparison without re-reading the 2025 texts, which this article did not cover.
