For a four-day bridge, Lisbon is the simplest choice: one day off is enough, Monday 30 November or Monday 7 December 2026. The 1 and 8 December are public holidays in Portugal, both Tuesdays this year, and Madeira stays the mildest.

Checked on against the official sources cited (calendrier.api.gouv.fr, date.nager.at, Visit Lisboa, Visit Madeira).

A four-day bridge leaves no room for error: the right choice depends as much on the calendar as on the weather. This article compares Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and Madeira by traveller profile, with public holidays, monument closing days, ten years of weather data and indicative prices checked on 23 October 2026. When a detail is not yet published for 2026, we say so rather than guess.

1. Which day should you take off?

A bridge day (pont, in French) is one day of leave that links a public holiday to a weekend. For a French employee, no public holiday falls between Saturday 28 November and Tuesday 8 December 2026. Portugal, on the other hand, has two public holidays in the period: 1 December, which marks the restoration of Portuguese independence in 1640 (Restauração da Independência), and 8 December, the Immaculate Conception. Both fall on a Tuesday this year.

One day of leave is enough. There are two windows: Monday 30 November, for a stay from Saturday 28 November to Tuesday 1 December, or Monday 7 December, for a stay from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December. The Monday is not neutral: it is the day the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is closed in Lisbon (the Torre de Belém too, according to guides), which changes the order of your programme (see the Lisbon section).

One tourist source files 8 December among the religious feasts, but the day does appear in Portugal’s 2026 public holiday list. Days off come from your paid leave, your RTT days (French working-time days off) or a conventional day. Splitting rules depend on your collective agreement: check them with your employer before you book leave.

2. Lisbon: the easiest bridge to build

Lisbon, the safe bet for a first bridge

Return flight about €148 (indicative) 4 days, 28 Nov. to 1 Dec. 16.1°C at most 7.2 h of sun a day

Together with Porto, Lisbon has the widest choice of direct flights from Paris of the four destinations. Transavia announces more than 30 flights a week to Porto and Lisbon for the winter, according to a company note relayed by the press. Over the bridge window, ten-year averages give 16.1°C at most and 10.4°C at least, with at least 1 mm of rain on one day in three. Lisbon’s Christmas market, Wonderland in Parque Eduardo VII, opened on 28 November 2025; no organiser had announced its 2026 edition at the date of checking. So don’t count on it in your plans.

What to know before you go

  • Mosteiro dos Jerónimos: 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, last entry at 5:00 pm, closed on Mondays. Booking a timed slot is recommended.
  • Torre de Belém: closed on Mondays according to guides. Since the reopening announced for 27 May 2026, visits are by time slot: book yours online before you come. Opening times differ from one source to another, so check the monument’s site before you go.
  • Sintra monuments: no specific closure on 1 December was found. Palácio Nacional de Sintra: 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, last admission 5:30 pm; Palácio da Pena: 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, last admission 6:00 pm (parquesdesintra.pt, page showing « © 2024 », to be confirmed).
  • Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga: closed for renovation since 29 September 2025, with a reopening announced for the second half of 2026 but not confirmed.
  • Festas de Natal (EGEAC): in 2025, a free programme ran from 5 to 19 December. The 2026 programme had not been published at the date of checking.
Pixidia tip: for the Monday of the bridge, keep Belém for Sunday or Tuesday, and use Monday for a trip out of the city. Also check your arrival airport in Lisbon before you book: our guide to the new Montijo airport covers it.

If Monday forces you to change plans, the day trip to Sintra and Cascais from Lisbon is the best alternative in the window. It runs every day from 28 November to 8 December: all 11 dates were checked in the booking tool on 23 October 2026, for two adults.

Sintra and Cascais Small-Group Day Trip from Lisbon from €49 per adult (based on 2 adults), checked on 23 October 2026 · ★ 4.8 (4770 Viator reviews)

3. Porto: the bridge for museums, bookshops and food

Porto, the city for a cultural and food-led bridge

Return flight about €141 (indicative) Same dates as Lisbon Rain about 1 day in 2 6.2 h of sun a day

Porto answers a different wish: museums, bookshops, good food and quays along the Douro. It is also the wettest of the four destinations. Over the bridge window, 45% of days have at least 1 mm of rain, against 25% in Faro. Bring a waterproof and a museum plan B for the rainy hours. Temperatures stay mild, with averages of 14.8°C at most and 8.7°C at least.

Livraria Lello is open every day from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm. Its entry ticket can be deducted from a book purchase, a detail that secondary guides often leave out (official site, checked on 23 October 2026). On the festive side, the Avenida dos Aliados lights were switched on on 29 November 2025, and the Cordoaria market ran until 30 December 2025. No 2026 programme had been published by the city council at the date of checking: treat these dates as last year’s reference points.

Points of reference for the stay

  • Livraria Lello: the ticket is deductible from a book purchase. Check the time slots on the official site before you go.
  • Lisbon-Porto train (Alfa Pendular): €49.90 in Conforto and €35.70 in Turística, according to 2026 fares reported in the press. To be confirmed on the CP (Comboios de Portugal) website.
  • Tourist tax: €3 per night and per person, capped at 7 nights, according to the Portuguese press. To be confirmed in the municipal regulation.
  • Accommodation: hotels in Porto and the North showed about 65% occupancy at Christmas 2025, and 75% on New Year’s Eve. Book early.
Pixidia tip: if you combine Lisbon and Porto over four days, the train between the two cities can replace a domestic flight. Compare its price with the flight for your departure day. To see all four cities over two weeks, our 10-day Portugal itinerary offers a full split.

4. Algarve (Faro): the sun, if you accept low season

Faro and the Algarve, the best sunshine in this set

Return flight about €170 (indicative) Low season, local markets 17.6°C at most 7.9 h of sun a day

Faro offers the best mix of sun and warmth of the four destinations, with 25% of days rainy across the window. But the Algarve out of season feels like a quiet resort. The Algarve-Tourist page, updated on 13 October 2026, describes restaurants open without booking early in the month, water parks, theme parks and nightclubs closed until around 20 December, and a Christmas programme that comes back around Lagos and Albufeira.

A bridge here suits a walk along the coast, a local market or an almost empty beach, not a resort lifestyle.

Points to watch

  • Direct flights: Transavia and easyJet are cited from Orly by conflicting sources, with no confirmation from the airlines. Check the timetables before you buy.
  • Christmas markets: Faro (Jardim Manuel Bivar) and Loulé are reported. The Loulé market ran from 6 to 8 December 2025; the 2026 programme is not confirmed.
  • Restaurants: seasonal seaside venues close in low season. Confirm each address before you go.
  • Tourist tax: it does not apply in every Algarve municipality, and the amount varies by municipality. Check with your host.
Pixidia tip: for four days, pick one base and stay there. Without a car, links between villages are slow, so choose a base and don’t move around.

5. Madeira (Funchal): the mildest, with the longest lights

Funchal, warmth and lights until January

Return flight about €219 (indicative) Lights from 1 Dec. to 10 Jan. 17.6°C at most, 13.2°C at least 8.0 h of sun a day

Funchal has Christmas lights from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, according to Visit Madeira’s official agenda (checked on 23 October 2026). The same page gives neither the switch-on time nor the date of the opening ceremony, so we don’t give them here. For the full programme and the New Year’s Eve fireworks, read our Madeira Christmas 2026 guide, which avoids repeating the same details.

The flight is the weak point. One airline runs the direct route from Orly, with about three flights a week in December 2026 according to a comparison site, for 3 h 50 to 4 h 57 of flying depending on the source. On a four-day bridge, the return trip takes a large share of the stay. Madeira stays the mildest destination on the list, with the highest average minimum (13.2°C), but it needs more planning ahead than the others.

Points of reference

  • Direct flight: one airline, about three flights a week in December 2026 according to a comparison site. Book early, the route is limited.
  • Rain: 39% of days in the window have at least 1 mm of rain, slightly fewer than in Porto.
  • Markets: the Noite do Mercado is announced for 23 December, and the Cantar dos Reis for 5 January. These dates fall outside the bridge, so keep them in reserve.
Pixidia tip: if you can only take the Monday, Madeira is the least suitable destination. Choose it if you accept spending the bridge on the road and in the light.

6. Which destination for which traveller?

The table below sums up the choice by traveller. Lisbon comes up in three of the six profiles, Porto in two, Faro in only one (the sun) and Funchal in two (warmth, family).

7. The weather in the window, over ten years

The figures below are statistical averages, not forecasts for 2026. They cover the window from 28 November to 8 December over the years 2016 to 2025. Looking only at 1 to 8 December (80 days, 2016 to 2025), Lisbon averages 15.8°C at most and 30% of days with at least 1 mm of rain; Porto 14.6°C and 45%; Faro 17.4°C and 21%; Funchal 17.5°C and 36%.

For planning your days, the useful difference is sunshine: more than 7 hours a day in Faro and Funchal, a little over 6 hours in Porto. Rain changes the programme more than the choice: in Porto, plan for museums; in Faro, plan for days outdoors.

8. Budget: flights, tax and accommodation

Flight prices are averages taken from comparison sites, not fares for the bridge dates. They help compare destinations with each other, not set a firm budget. Check actual fares on the airline’s site before you decide.

In Lisbon, a three-night stay from Saturday to Tuesday costs €12 in tourist tax per person. Some accommodation guides still show €2: that is a figure from before September 2024, so don’t use it.

On accommodation, Christmas 2025 occupancy rates give an idea of how tight the dates are: 65% in Porto and the North, 75% on New Year’s Eve (Lusa, 25 November 2025). Pestana reported 65 to 85% for Christmas in Lisbon and Porto, and 65 to 80% in the Algarve and Madeira. No 2026 figures had been published at the date of checking.

9. A typical bridge, day by day

Here is an outline for a stay in Lisbon from Saturday 28 November to Tuesday 1 December. It adapts to the 5 to 8 December window by swapping the Belém and Sintra days if needed.

  • Saturday 28 November: arrival, settling in, a walk through Alfama and the Baixa, with no busy plan. The first evening is ideal for spotting the markets.
  • Sunday 29 November: Belém, with the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (open on Sundays, last entry at 5:00 pm) and a visit to the Torre de Belém on a booked slot, whose hours should be checked the day before.
  • Monday 30 November: Sintra and Cascais on a day trip, since the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is closed that day and the Torre de Belém is too according to guides. Book the trip before you leave.
  • Tuesday 1 December: public holiday in Portugal. Schools, public services and many businesses are closed (feriados.com.pt, secondary source, checked on 23 October 2026). Keep the day for the market and the return. Transport hours for these two dates were not found at the date of checking: check them the day before. In 2025, state monuments closed that day because of a staff strike, according to the press; no similar strike was announced for 2026 at the date of checking.

What other guides don’t tell you

Five points missing from the bridge guides we read. Each one links to a source checked on 23 October 2026; the last one, on Wonderland, relies on the press and a guide, as no official source is available.

  • The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is closed on Mondays, precisely the day you would take off. Its hours are 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on other days (Visit Lisboa, official listing, checked on 23 October 2026).
  • Lisbon’s tourist tax is €4 per night, capped at 7 nights. Guides that show €2 use a figure from before September 2024 (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, checked on 23 October 2026).
  • Funchal’s lights run from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. They start on the last day of the 28 November window and cover the whole 5 to 8 December window; the switch-on time is not published (Visit Madeira, festive agenda, checked on 23 October 2026).
  • Livraria Lello is open every day from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm, and its ticket is deductible from a book purchase. This information does not appear in the secondary sources we read (Livraria Lello, official site, checked on 23 October 2026).
  • No 2026 edition of Wonderland has been announced. One guide mentions a start « from 27 November », with no official source; the 2025 edition ran from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 (e-konomista; Time Out, checked on 23 October 2026).

Before you go: paperwork, eSIM and insurance

French citizens can enter Portugal with a valid national identity card for a stay of under 90 days in the Schengen area. A passport is still recommended (France Diplomatie, Portugal page updated on 10 September 2026, checked on 23 October 2026). The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been operating in Portugal since 10 April 2026 according to the press, with queues reported in Lisbon, Porto and Faro.
